A sustainable scheduling system for medical equipment: Towards net zero goals for green healthcare

Shortages of medical equipment, growth in medical waste and carbon emissions have increased healthcare pressures and has a huge impact on the environment. An efficient scheduling of medical equipment will effectively reduce the pressure on healthcare and improve the healthcare system's ability to respond to unexpected disasters. A medical equipment scheduling system was established to improve the sustainable utilization of medical equipment within the healthcare network and to reduce the carbon emissions of the healthcare process. First, this paper combines medical equipment information to establish a medical equipment scheduling decision model that considers pollution to filter qualified medical equipment for scheduling. Then, this paper constructs and solves a multi-objective robust optimization model by collecting the patient's travel information and the medical pressure information of each region. In addition, to meet dynamic healthcare needs, a dynamic medical equipment configuration framework was constructed to enhance the flexibility of equipment scheduling and the resilience of the healthcare network. Combined with case studies, the results show that the medical equipment scheduling system can help decision makers make quick scheduling decisions and achieve sustainable use of medical equipment, with a corresponding increase in medical equipment utilization of 12.25% and a reduction in carbon emissions of 26.50%. The study will help enhance healthcare resource utilization and contribute to the net-zero goal of green healthcare.

The Current Safety Regulation for Radiation Emergency Medicine in Korea

Radiation emergency medicine (REM) systems are operated around the world to provide specialized care for injured individuals who require immediate medical attention in accidents. This manuscript describes the current status of REM safety regulation in Korea and summarizes an assessment of the effects of this regulation. Responding to the requests of people for stronger safety regulations related to radiation exposure, a unique REM safety regulation for nuclear licensees, which is enforceable by laws, has been established and implemented. It is not found in other countries. It can provide a good example in practice for sustainable REM management including document reviews on medical response procedures and inspections of equipment and facilities. REM preparedness of nuclear or radiologic facilities has been improved with systematic implementation of processes contained in the regulation. In particular, the medical care system of licensees has become firmly coordinated in the REM network at the national level, which has enhanced their abilities by providing adequate medical personnel and facilities. This legal regulation service has contributed to preparing the actual medical emergency response for unexpected accidents and should ultimately secure the occupational safety for workers in radiation facilities.

Assessing Risks Awareness in Operating Rooms among Post-Graduate Students: A Pilot Study

Background: In this study, we promote a global approach to occupational risk perception in order to improve occupational health and safety training programs. The study investigates the occupational risk perception of operating room healthcare workers using an Analytic Hierarchy Process approach. Methods: A pilot study was carried out through a cross-sectional survey in a university hospital in Southern Italy. An ad hoc questionnaire was administered to enrolled medical post-graduate students working in the operating room. Results: Fifty medical specialists from seven fields (anaesthetists, digestive system surgeons, general surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, thoracic surgeons, urologists, and gynaecologists) were questioned about perceived occupational risk by themselves. Biological, ionizing radiation, and chemical risks were the most commonly perceived in order of priority (w = 0.300, 0.219, 0.210). Concerning the biological risk, gynaecologists unexpected perceived this risk as less critical (w = 0.2820) than anaesthesiologists (w = 0.3354), which have the lowest perception of the risk of ionizing radiation (w = 0.1657). Conclusions: Prioritization methods could improve risk perception in healthcare settings and help detect training needs and perform sustainable training programs.
