High-precision measurement of U-Pu-Np-Am concentrations and isotope ratios in environmental reference materials by mass spectrometry

Assessing Gas-Phase Ion Reactivity of 50 Elements with NO and the Direct Application for 239Pu in Complex Matrices Using ICP-MS/MS

Understanding the reactivity of metal cations with various reaction gases in inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) is important to determine the best gas to use for a given analyte/interference pair. In this study, nitric oxide (NO) was investigated as the reaction gas following previous experimental designs. The reactions with 50 elements were investigated to examine periodic trends in reactivity, validate theoretical modeling of reaction enthalpies as a method to screen reactant gases, and provide a baseline data set for potential in-line gas separation methods. ICP-MS/MS studies involving actinides are typically limited to Th, U, and Pu, with analyses of Np and Am rarely reported in the literature. To date, only two previous methods have investigated the use of NO in ICP-MS/MS analyses. To showcase the utility of NO, a method was developed to measure 239Pu in the presence of environmental matrix constituent and other actinides, like what could be expected from postdetonation debris, with no chemical separation prior to analysis. 239Pu+ was reacted to form 239Pu16O+, eliminating interferences derived from the sample matrix by measuring the 239Pu+ intensity at m/z = 255 (239Pu16O+). To validate NO for 238U1H+ interference removal in environmental matrices, standard reference materials were diluted to 1 mg/g of solution and spiked to 0.05 pg/g of 239Pu and 1 μg/g 238U (Pu/U = 5 × 10-8). Measured 239Pu concentrations were within 6% of the spiked value. These results demonstrate that reliable 239Pu measurements can be made at levels relevant to nuclear forensics without the need for extensive chemical matrix separation prior to analysis.

A comprehensive survey of reference materials for their use in quality assurance for the determination of Np-237 in environmental samples

Neptunium-237 (237Np) is one of the most hazardous radionuclides of public concern due to its radiological toxicity, long half-life and high environmental mobility. Standard reference materials (SRMs) with well characterized 237Np activity concentrations are valuable for method development and validation of 237Np determination in environmental samples. In this study, a comprehensive literature survey of 237Np activity concentrations in 25 SRMs was carried out covering the various matrices of sediment, soil, seawater, atmospheric particles, and biota. After data screening, arithmetic mean of the activity concentrations of 237Np in literatures were calculated as statistical values (SVs). Then, accuracies of different instrument analyses and acid digestion methods were evaluated based on the SVs. Finally, by optimizing the sector field ICP-MS analytical method, 237Np activity concentration in JSAC-0471 soil SRM was measured. The application of SVs provides 237Np activity concentration information in more SRMs. Besides SRMs certified by technically validated procedures, SRMs with SVs and the measurement of JASC-0471 provide more options for suitable selection of SRMs for 237Np determination.

Analytical Methods for the Determination of 90Sr and 239,240Pu in Environmental Samples

Artificial long-lived radionuclides such as ⁹⁰Sr and ^239,240Pu have been long released into the environment by human nuclear activities, which have a profound impact on the ecological environment. It is of great significance to monitor the concentration of these radionuclides for environmental safety. This paper summarizes and critically discusses the separation and measurement methods for ultra-trace determination of ⁹⁰Sr, ²³⁹Pu, and ²⁴⁰Pu in the environment. After selecting the measurement method, it is necessary to consider the decontamination of the interference from matrix elements and the key elements, and this involves the choice of the separation method. Measurement methods include both radiometric methods and non-radiometric methods. Radiometric methods, including alpha spectroscopy, liquid scintillation spectrometry, etc., are commonly used methods for measuring ^239+240Pu and ⁹⁰Sr. Mass spectrometry, as the representative of non-radiometric measurement methods, has been regarded as the most promising analytical method due to its high absolute sensitivity, low detection limit, and relatively short sample-analysis time. Through the comparison of various measurement methods, the future development trend of radionuclide measurement is prospected in this review. The fully automatic and rapid analysis method is a highlight. The new mass spectrometer with ultra-high sensitivity shows strong analytical capabilities for extremely low concentrations of ⁹⁰Sr, ²³⁹Pu, and ²⁴⁰Pu, and it is expected to develop determination methods with higher sensitivity and lower detection limit.
