Antiproliferative potential and phenolic compounds of infusions and essential oil of chamomile cultivated with homeopathy

Prophylactic effect of chamomile on post-dural puncture headache in women undergoing elective cesarean section: A randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is a common complication after spinal anesthesia, affecting patient recovery. This study evaluated the prophylactic effect of topical chamomile ointment on PDPH in women undergoing elective cesarean section.

METHODS

In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial 148 pregnant women were randomized into two parallel groups and received 3cc of the chamomile or the placebo ointment on the forehead of the participants 20 minutes before the start of spinal anesthesia, and then 2 and 4 hours after that. The primary outcomes were the incidence rate of headache, and its severity assessed by a numeric rating scale (NRS), while secondary outcomes included analgesic consumption, frequency of nausea/vomiting, and adverse events.

RESULTS

Chamomile ointment exhibited significant preventive effects on PDPH incidence compared to placebo. The chamomile group demonstrated lower rates of PDPH at 6 hours (3.5% vs. 7.18%, p = 0.021) and 12 hours (7.6% vs. 20%, p = 0.028) after spinal anesthesia. Analgesic consumption, frequency of nausea/vomiting, and adverse events were comparable between the groups.

CONCLUSION

Topical chamomile ointment demonstrated significant preventive effects on PDPH incidence compared to placebo. Chamomile ointment could be a promising adjunctive approach to prevent PDPH, enhancing patient comfort and potentially reducing the need for analgesics. Further investigation is needed to explore its mechanisms and broader applications.

Chamomile: A Review of Its Traditional Uses, Chemical Constituents, Pharmacological Activities and Quality Control Studies

Matricaria chamomilla L. (MC) and Chamaemelum nobile (L.) All. (CN) are two varieties of Chamomile. These herbs have been used for thousands of years in Greece, Rome and ancient Egypt. Chamomile has been used for the treatment of stomach problems, cramps, dermatitis, and minor infections. The purpose of this study was to introduce the botanical characteristics and geographical distribution, traditional uses, chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, toxicity studies and quality control studies, and lay a theoretical foundation for the rational development and utilization of chamomile. This review powered that chemical constituents include flavonoids, coumarins, volatile oils, terpenes, organic acids, polysaccharides, and others. These compounds possess anticancer, anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, antioxidant, hypolipidaemic, hypoglycaemic, antihypertensive, antidepressant, neuroprotective activities, among others. Chamomile is a widely used herb in traditional medicine. It brings great economic value due to its numerous pharmacological effects and traditional uses. However, more toxicity tests should be carried out to confirm its safety. There is need for further research to provide concrete scientific evidence and validate its medicinal properties.

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of plant phytochemicals for biological and environmental applications - A review

Recently, supercritical fluid CO₂ extraction (SFE) has emerged as a promising and pervasive technology over conventional extraction techniques for various applications, especially for bioactive compounds extraction and environmental pollutants removal. In this context, temperature and pressure regulate the solvent density and thereby effects the yield, selectivity, and biological/therapeutic properties of the extracted components. However, the nature of plant matrices primarily determines the extraction mechanism based on either density or vapor pressure. The present review aims to cover the recent research and developments of SFE technique in the extraction of bioactive plant phytochemicals with high antioxidant, antibacterial, antimalarial, and anti-inflammatory activities, influencing parameters, process conditions, the investigations for improving the yield and selectivity. In another portion of this review focuses on the ecotoxicology and toxic metal recovery applications. Nonpolar properties of Sc-CO₂ create strong solvent strength via distinct intermolecular interaction forces with micro-pollutants and toxic metal complexes. This results in efficient removal of these contaminants and makes SFE technology as a superior alternative for conventional solvent-based treatment methods. Moreover, a compelling assessment on the therapeutic, functional, and solvent properties of SFE is rarely focused, and hence this review would add significant value to the SFE based research studies. Furthermore, we mention the limitations and potential of future perspectives related to SFE applications.
