TOF-SIMS surface analysis of chemical components of size-fractioned urban aerosols in a typical heavy air pollution event in Beijing

An evaluation of static ToF-SIMS analysis of environmental organics

Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) has been extensively used in surface analysis due to its high mass resolution, sensitivity, and mass spectral imaging capabilities. Static ToF-SIMS has mainly been used for solid material analysis; however, its application in environmental organics is limited. During SIMS spectral analysis, relative mass accuracy and measurement repeatability are key factors for obtaining reliable speciation and acquiring chemical insights of the specimens. Herein, we provide an evaluation of four environmentally relevant organic systems, including glyoxal, pyruvic acid, oil-in-water emulsion, and carbon dioxide (CO2) capture solvent (i.e., N-2-ethoxyethyl-3-morpholinopropan-1-amine, EMMPA), to show the spectral measurement repeatability when using static ToF-SIMS. First, sample preparation is essential in acquiring accurate and reproducible results in ToF-SIMS analysis. The mass spectral results show that characteristic peaks observed can be distinguished with reasonable confidence by comparing the observed mass to charge ratios (m/z) to theoretical ones. The statistical analysis of peak areas indicates that the peak area and/or peak height measurement ratios are satisfactory among replicates. Compared with previous studies, the bismuth cluster primary ion beam, namely Bi3 +, has less fragmentation than Bi+. Therefore, Bi3 + is deemed more suitable for organic analysis using static SIMS. Our results show that ToF-SIMS offers a viable approach to study environmental organics including but not limited to aqueous aerosols, wastewater emulsions, and CO2 capture solvents. It is expected that future studies will expand organic speciation with high fidelity due to the continued advancement of SIMS as a sensitive analysis technique.

ToF-SIMS evaluation of PEG-related mass peaks and applications in PEG detection in cosmetic products

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) are used in industrial, medical, health care, and personal care applications. The cycling and disposal of synthetic polymers like PEGs pose significant environmental concerns. Detecting and monitoring PEGs in the real world calls for immediate attention. This study unveils the efficacy of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) as a reliable approach for precise analysis and identification of reference PEGs and PEGs used in cosmetic products. By comparing SIMS spectra, we show remarkable sensitivity in pinpointing distinctive ion peaks inherent to various PEG compounds. Moreover, the employment of principal component analysis effectively discriminates compositions among different samples. Notably, the application of SIMS two-dimensional image analysis visually portrays the spatial distribution of various PEGs as reference materials. The same is observed in authentic cosmetic products. The application of ToF-SIMS underscores its potential in distinguishing PEGs within intricate environmental context. ToF-SIMS provides an effective solution to studying emerging environmental challenges, offering straightforward sample preparation and superior detection of synthetic organics in mass spectral analysis. These features show that SIMS can serve as a promising alternative for evaluation and assessment of PEGs in terms of the source, emission, and transport of anthropogenic organics.

Competing esterification and oligomerization reactions of typical long-chain alcohols to secondary organic aerosol formation

Organosulfate (OSA) nanoparticles, as secondary organic aerosol (SOA) compositions, are ubiquitous in urban and rural environments. Hence, we systemically investigated the mechanisms and kinetics of aqueous-phase reactions of 1-butanol/1-decanol (BOL/DOL) and their roles in the formation of OSA nanoparticles by using quantum chemical and kinetic calculations. The mechanism results show that the aqueous-phase reactions of BOL/DOL start from initial protonation at alcoholic OH-groups to form carbenium ions (CBs), which engage in the subsequent esterification or oligomerization reactions to form OSAs/organosulfites (OSIs) or dimers. The kinetic results reveal that dehydration to form CBs for BOL and DOL reaction systems is the rate-limiting step. Subsequently, about 18% of CBs occur via oligomerization to dimers, which are difficult to further oligomerize because all reactive sites are occupied. The rate constant of BOL reaction system is one order of magnitude larger than that of DOL reaction system, implying that relative short-chain alcohols are more prone to contribute OSAs/OSIs than long-chain alcohols. Our results reveal that typical long-chain alcohols contribute SOA formation via esterification rather than oligomerization because OSA/OSI produced by esterification engages in nanoparticle growth through enhancing hygroscopicity.

Prevalence and distribution of domoic acid and cyclic imines in bivalve mollusks from Beibu Gulf, China

Beibu Gulf is an important shellfish aquaculture area in the northwest of the South China Sea, China. In this study, the toxin profile and spatial-temporal distribution of domoic acid (DA) and 10 lipophilic phycotoxins were systematically analyzed in the bivalve mollusks collected in Beibu Gulf from October 2018 to October 2020. Neurotoxin DA was first detected in the mollusks from the investigative regions with a prevalence of 17.7%, peaking at 401 µg kg^-1. Cyclic imines (CIs) including gymnodimine-A (GYM-A, 46.6%) and 13-desmethyl-spirolide-C (SPX1, 15.8%) predominated the lipophilic phycotoxins in shellfish, peaking at 10.1 µg kg^-1 and 19.6 µg kg^-1, respectively. Gymnodimine-A partially accompanied by SPX1 was detected in all batches of shellfish samples, suggesting that Alexandrium ostenfeldii and Karenia selliformis were possible sources of CIs-group toxins in Beibu Gulf. During the investigative period, relatively higher levels of DA occurred in shellfishes from March to August, while slightly higher contents of CIs in mollusks appeared in October and December. Spatial distribution of the targeted phycotoxins demonstrated that shellfishes tended to accumulate relatively higher contents of toxins in Lianzhou, Qinzhou and Tieshan bays.

Molecular imaging of plant-microbe interactions on the Brachypodium seed surface

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) play a crucial role in biological control and pathogenic defense on and within plant tissues, however the mechanisms by which plants associate with PGPR to elicit such beneficial effects need further study. Here, we present time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) imaging of Brachypodium distachyon (Brachypodium) seeds with and without exposure to two model PGPR, i.e., Gram-negative Pseudomonas fluorescens SBW25 (P.) and Gram-positive Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6 (A.). Delayed image extraction was used to image PGPR-treated seed sections to reveal morphological changes. ToF-SIMS spectral comparison, principal component analysis (PCA), and two-dimensional (2D) imaging show that the selected PGPR have different effects on the host seed surface, resulting in changes in chemical composition and morphology. Metabolite products and biomarkers, such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, fatty acids, and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), were identified on the PGPR-treated seed surfaces. These compounds have different distributions on the Brachypodium seed surface for the two PGPR, indicating that the different bacteria elicit distinct responses from the host. Our results illustrate that ToF-SIMS is an effective tool to study plant-microbe interactions and to provide insightful information with submicrometer lateral resolution of the chemical distributions associated with morphological features, potentially offering a new way to study the mechanisms underlying beneficial roles of PGPR.

A preliminary study on pollution characteristics of surfactant substances in fine particles in the Beibu Gulf Region of China

The pollution characteristics of surfactant substances in fine particles (PM_2.5) in spring were studied in the Beibu Gulf Region of China, 68 samples of PM_2.5 were collected at Weizhou Island in Beihai City from March 12 to April 17, 2015. The Anionic Surfactant Substances (ASS) and Cationic Surfactant Substances (CSS) in the samples were analyzed using Byethyl Violet Spectrophotometry and Disulfide Blue Spectrophotometry, respectively. Combined with the data from backward trajectory simulation, the effects of air pollutants from remote transport on the pollution characteristics of surfactant substances in PM_2.5 in the Beibu Gulf Region were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that the daily mean concentrations of ASS and CSS in spring in the Beibu Gulf Region were 165.20 pmol/m³ and 8.05pmol/m³, and the variation ranges were 23.21-452.55 pmol/m³ and 0.65-31.31 pmol/m³, accounting for 1.82‰ ± 1.65‰ and 0.12‰ ± 0.11‰ of the mass concentration of PM_2.5, respectively. These concentrations were lower than those in comparable regions around the world. There was no clear correlation between the concentrations of ASS and CSS in PM_2.5 and the mass concentrations of PM_2.5. Tourism and air transport had a positive contribution on the concentrations of ASS. The concentration of surfactant substances in PM_2.5 was significantly impacted by wind speed and wind direction. Atmospheric temperature, air pressure and precipitation had little effect on the concentrations of surfactant substances. Surfactant substances in PM_2.5 significantly impacted visibility. Results also showed that the main sources of surfactant substances were from the southern China and Southeast Asia.

The persistence of a proxy for cooking emissions in megacities: a kinetic study of the ozonolysis of self-assembled films by simultaneous small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and Raman microscopy

Cooking emissions account for a significant proportion of the organic aerosols emitted into the urban environment and high pollution events have been linked to an increased organic content on urban particulate matter surfaces. We present a kinetic study on surface coatings of self-assembled (semi-solid) oleic acid-sodium oleate cooking aerosol proxies undergoing ozonolysis. We found clear film thickness-dependent kinetic behaviour and measured the effect of the organic phase on the kinetics for this system. In addition to the thickness-dependent kinetics, we show that significant fractions of unreacted proxy remain after extensive ozone exposure and that this effect scales approximately linearly with film thickness, suggesting that a late-stage inert reaction product may form and inhibit reaction progress - effectively building up an inert crust. We determine this by using a range of simultaneous analytical techniques; most notably Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) has been used for the first time to measure the reaction kinetics of films of a wide range of thicknesses from ca. 0.59 to 73 μm with films <10 μm thick being of potential atmospheric relevance. These observations have implications for the evolution of particulate matter in the urban environment, potentially extending the atmospheric lifetimes of harmful aerosol components and affecting the local urban air quality and climate.

Chemical mapping of tire and road wear particles for single particle analysis

Tire and road wear particles (TRWP), which are comprised of polymer-containing tread with pavement encrustations, are generated from friction between the tire and the road. Similar to environmentally dispersed microplastic particles (MP), the fate of TRWP depends on both the mass concentration as well as individual particle characteristics, such as particle diameter and density. The identification of an individual TRWP in environmental samples has been limited by inherent characteristics of black particles, which interfere with the spectroscopic techniques most often used in MP research. The purpose of this research was to apply suitable analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) mapping and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) mapping, to characterize the specific physical and chemical properties of individual TRWP. Detailed elemental and organic surface maps were generated for numerous samples including bulk tread material, cryogenically milled tire tread particles, and TRWP generated from two separate road simulator methods. Key physical and chemical characteristics of TRWP for single particle identification included (1) elongated/round shape with variable amounts of mineral encrustation, (2) elemental surface characteristics including co-localization of (S + Zn/Na) ± (Si, K, Mg, Ca, and Al), and (3) co-localization of organic surface markers, such as C₆H₅⁺ and C₇H₇⁺. Comparisons of TRWP with other polymeric (polystyrene) and non-polymeric (carbon black) particle types demonstrated that a combination of physical and chemical markers is necessary to identify TRWP. Addition of a density separation step to the single particle analysis techniques allowed for the determination of average primary TRWP particle size (34 μm by number distribution and 49 μm by volume distribution) and aspect ratio (65% of TRWP with an aspect ratio > 1.5). The use of chemical mapping techniques, such as SEM/EDX and/or ToF-SIMS mapping as demonstrated herein, can support future research efforts that aim to identify complex MP.

Liquid ToF-SIMS revealing the oil, water, and surfactant interface evolution

Bilge water from ships is regarded as a major pollutant in the marine environment. Bilge water exists in a stable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion form. However, little is known about the O/W liquid-liquid (l-l) interface. Traditional bulk characterization approaches are not capable of capturing the chemical changes at the O/W l-l interface. Although surfactants are deemed essential in droplet formation, their roles in bilge water stabilization have not been fully revealed. We have utilized novel in situ chemical imaging tools including in situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and in situ time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) to study the evolving O/W interface using a NAVY bilge model for the first time. The droplet size distribution (DSD) does not change significantly without the addition of X-100 surfactants under static or rocking conditions. Both the oil components and the water clusters are shown to evolve over time at the O/W droplet interface by in situ liquid SIMS imaging. Of particular interest to droplet stabilization, the contribution of surfactants to the aged bilge droplets becomes more significant as the droplet size increases. The higher mass surfactant component does not appear on the droplet surface immediately while many lower mass surfactants are solvated inside the droplet. We have provided the first three-dimensional images of the evolving O/W interface and demonstrated that in situ surface chemical mapping is powerful enough to reveal the complex and dynamic l-l interface in the liquid state. Our observational insights suggest that surfactants are important in mediating droplet growth and facilitating effective separation of bilge water emulsion.

Characteristics of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Common Air Pollutants at Wajima, a Remote Background Site in Japan

Background: Background sites are mainly affected by long-range-transported air pollutants, resulting in potential adverse effects on local atmospheric environments. A 4–5 year observational study was conducted to illustrate the air pollution profile at the Kanazawa University Wajima air monitoring station (KUWAMS), an ideal remote background site in Japan. Methods: Nine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the particulate phase and various air pollutants were continuously monitored for 4–5 years. Diagnostic ratios of PAHs and back-trajectory analysis were applied to trace the possible sources of the air pollutants collected at the sampling site. Results: The atmospheric concentration of PAHs in the atmosphere at the site decreased from 2014 to 2019, benefit from the predominant air pollution control policy in China and Japan. Common air pollutants including sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NO_x), ozone, methane (CH₄), and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) were detected in low concentrations from 2016 to 2019, while ozone (O₃) and particulate matter (PM_2.5, PM with a diameter less than 2.5 μm) were present in high levels that exceeded the Japanese standards. Most air pollutants peaked in spring and showed evident diurnal variations in spring and summer. Conclusions: This is the first study to clarify the atmospheric behaviors of multiple air pollutants at a background site in Japan. Significant external air pollutant impact and unneglectable air pollution were demonstrated at KUWAMS, indicating the importance of studying atmospheric pollution at remote sites.
