Biotechnology Advances in Bioremediation of Arsenic: A Review

Arsenic is a highly toxic metalloid widespread in the Earth's crust, and its contamination due to different anthropogenic activities (application of agrochemicals, mining, waste management) represents an emerging environmental issue. Therefore, different sustainable and effective remediation methods and approaches are needed to prevent and protect humans and other organisms from detrimental arsenic exposure. Among numerous arsenic remediation methods, those supported by using microbes as sorbents (microbial remediation), and/or plants as green factories (phytoremediation) are considered as cost-effective and environmentally-friendly bioremediation. In addition, recent advances in genetic modifications and biotechnology have been used to develop (i) more efficient transgenic microbes and plants that can (hyper)accumulate or detoxify arsenic, and (ii) novel organo-mineral materials for more efficient arsenic remediation. In this review, the most recent insights from arsenic bio-/phytoremediation are presented, and the most relevant physiological and molecular mechanisms involved in arsenic biological routes, which can be useful starting points in the creation of more arsenic-tolerant microbes and plants, as well as their symbiotic associations are discussed.

Analyzing toxicological effects of AsIII and AsV to Chlamys farreri by integrating transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) is a widespread contaminant in marine environments, which is present in two different oxidation states (arsenate (AsV) and arsenite (AsIII)) that have complex toxic effects on marine organisms. The scallop Chlamys farreri (C. farreri) accumulates high levels of As and is a suitable bioindicator of As. In this report, we integrated transcriptomics and metabolomics to investigate genetic and metabolite changes and functional physiological disturbances in C. farreri exposured to inorganic arsenic. Physiological indicators antioxidant factors and cell apoptosis analysis macroscopically corroborated the toxic effects of inorganic arsenic revealed by omics results. Toxic effects of inorganic arsenic on C. farreri were signaling-mediated, causing interference with a variety of cell growth and small molecule metabolism. The results provide evidence that inorganic arsenic disrupts the physiological functions of bivalves, highlighting the correlations between different metabolic pathways and providing new insights into the toxic effects of environmental pollutants on marine organisms.

Arsenic Remediation through Sustainable Phytoremediation Approaches

Arsenic contamination of the environment is a serious problem threatening the health of millions of people exposed to arsenic (As) via drinking water and crops grown in contaminated areas. The remediation of As-contaminated soil and water bodies needs to be sustainable, low-cost and feasible to apply in the most affected low-to-middle income countries, like India and Bangladesh. Phytoremediation is an aesthetically appreciable and successful approach that can be used for As decontamination with use of the best approach(es) and the most promising plant(s). However, phytoremediation lacks the required speed and sometimes the stress caused by As could diminish plants’ potential for remediation. To tackle these demerits, we need augment plants’ potential with appropriate technological methods including microbial and nanoparticles applications and genetic modification of plants to alleviate the As stress and enhance As accumulation in phytoremediator plants. The present review discusses the As phytoremediation prospects of soil and water bodies and the usefulness of various plant systems in terms of high biomass, high As accumulation, bioenergy potential, and economic utility. The potential and prospects of assisted phytoremediation approaches are also presented.

A constructed wetland system with aquatic macrophytes for cleaning contaminated runoff/storm water from urban area in Florida

A community of aquatic macrophytes has an important role in reducing nutrient load and organic and inorganic contaminants in storm/runoff water. However, minimal information is available regarding the efficiency of constructed wetlands for cleaning runoff water from urban areas, especially in the tropical and subtropical regions. This study investigated the effectiveness of constructed wetland integrated with aquatic macrophytes for removal of chemical and microbial contaminants in the storm/runoff water from the urban areas. Water samples were monthly collected in the constructed wetland from the inlet of storm/runoff water, middle and outlet of discharge, and analyzed for physical and chemical properties, concentrations of nutrients, metals, and fecal coliform (FC) during the period of November, 2016 to April, 2018 in St. Lucie county, Florida, USA. The dominant plant species in the constructed wetland included cattail (Typha latifolia), waterthyme (Hydrilla verticillata) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and periphyton filamentous algae (Spirogyra). The improvement of pH and electrical conductivity (EC) was not obvious, but the concentration of total suspended solids was significantly reduced. This system was effective in the removal of fecal coliform (by 68%) and particulate phosphorus (P, 72%), followed by total P (42%) and N (35%). Concentrations of metallic pollutants including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) were mostly below the detection limit (<1 ppb) except for zinc (Zn), of which concentration was reduced by 23%. The removal of FC was consistently effective all the year round, whereas the removal of total N, P and particulate-P was effective in spring and summer, and less in autumn and winter. These results indicate that constructed wetland with a natural aquatic plant community can effectively reduce the loads of nutrients, metals, and fecal coliforms in water column. Regular harvest of aquatic macrophytes communities and collecting litters may further improve the system efficiency for cleaning storm water from urban areas.

Influence of environmental factors on arsenite transformation and fate in the Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) royle - Medium system

Hydrilla verticillata (L.f.) Royle has a great ability to accumulate large amounts of arsenic (As). We studied the influence of phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), pH, and arsenite (As(III)) on As transformation and fate in the H. verticillata - medium system via orthogonal experimental design. The results showed highest plant growth was under intermediate As(III) in the medium, with Chlorophyll a and Chlorophyll b contents in plant diminishing after 96 h treatment. Exposure to high N, high As(III), intermediate P, and low pH in the medium, the highest total arsenic uptake by plants were 169.1 ± 5.5 μg g^-1 dry weight, with As(III) as the predominant speciation (49.1 ± 4.8% to 88.5 ± 0.2%) in plants. Meanwhile, trace As (mainly arsenate (As(V))) was adsorbed on the surface of H. verticillata, and the adsorption amounts of As(V) increased with increasing As(III) concentrations in the medium. The dominant As species was As(V) in the medium although plant was supplied with As(III), and highest As(III) oxidation proportion in the medium would occur when low N and pH associated with high P and As(III). Collectively, As(III) uptake and transformation by H. verticillata cannot be overlooked in the biogeochemical cycling of As in aquatic environment.
