Comparative study of degradation of toluene and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in aqueous solution by pulsed corona discharge plasma

Response surface methodology (RSM) for optimizing ozone-assisted process parameters for formaldehyde removal

Formaldehyde, a volatile organic compound (VOC), is one of the main gaseous pollutants from commercial cooking. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a laboratory-scale ozone-assisted indirect plasma method for formaldehyde removal using response surface methodology (RSM). A dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor was used for ozone generation. Inlet HCHO concentration, ozone concentration, and residence time were considered the design parameters, and formaldehyde removal efficiency (response 1) and energy yield (response 2) were considered response parameters. The optimized models showed a positive correlation between the predicted and experimental outcomes. Inlet ozone concentration, the most significant parameter in the removal efficiency model, represented a positive correlation with this response in most parts of the operating region. The optimal point with the highest desirability (i.e., D1 point) was obtained at the inlet HCHO concentration of 120 ppm, inlet ozone concentration of 40 ppm, and reaction time of 11.35 s within the parameter ranges studied, resulting in 64% removal efficiency and 2.64 g/kWh energy yield. At the point with the second highest desirability (D2), 100% removal efficiency along with 0.7 g/kWh energy yield was achieved indicating the very good performance of the process. The indirect plasma approach used in this study presented a successful performance in terms of removal efficiency along with acceptable energy yield compared to other plasma-assisted processes reported in the literature. The results suggested that ozone-assisted indirect plasma treatment can be utilized as an efficient alternative method for formaldehyde removal in commercial kitchens, while efficiency or energy yield should be prioritized for optimizing operating conditions.

Volatile organic compounds degradation by nonthermal plasma: a review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have posed a severe threat on both ecosystem and human health which thus have gained much attention in recent years. Nonthermal plasma (NTP) as an alternative to traditional methods has been employed to degrade VOC in the atmosphere and wastewater for its high removal efficiency (up to 100%), mild operating conditions, and environmental friendliness. This review outlined the principles of NTP production and the applications on VOC removal in different kinds of reactors, like single/double dielectric barrier discharge, surface discharge, and gliding arc discharge reactors. The combination of NTP with catalysts/oxidants was also applied for VOC degradation to further promote the energy efficiency. Further, detailed explanations were given of the effect of various important factors including input/reactor/external conditions on VOC degradation performance. The reactive species (e.g., high-energy electrons, HO·, O·, N₂⁺, Ar⁺, O₃, H₂O₂) generated in NTP discharge process have played crucial roles in decomposing VOC molecules; therefore, their variation under different parameter conditions along with the reaction mechanisms involved in these NTP technologies was emphatically explained. Finally, a conclusion of the NTP technologies was presented, and special attention was paid to future challenges for NTP technologies in VOC treatment to stimulate the advances in this topic.

Continuous flow pulsed power plasma reactor for the treatment of aqueous solution containing volatile organic compounds and real pharmaceutical wastewater

The degradation of four recalcitrant and toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds) present in pharmaceutical wastewater was studied using a continuous flow plasma reactor, along with evaluating its potential for real effluent treatment. The wastewater was sprayed into the plasma zone of the reactor, and it was re-circulated for better performance. The effect of different HRTs (hydraulic retention time) and initial concentrations of VOCs on the degradation efficiency were evaluated. In continuous reactor, complete removal of 200 mg/L of chloroform, chlorobenzene, and toluene was achieved at a HRT of 33.3 min, with an energy consumption of 22.4 kWh/m³. The study on the effect of different inlet loading rates of VOCs on elimination capacity showed that, the removal was limited initially by diffusion of reactive species and at higher loads, it was limited by insufficient amount of reactive species produced. During degradation of VOC mixture, more than 90% removal of chloroform, chlorobenzene and toluene was achieved at HRT of 33.3 min, and the TOC removal was 78.3%. The degradation efficiency of VOC mixture reduced slightly compared to that of individual compounds, due to insufficient amount of reactive species produced. The COD and BOD removal achieved after 140 min of direct plasma treatment of real pharmaceutical wastewater in batch reactor was 92.7% and 95.2%, respectively. Coagulation pre-treatment did not have a significant effect on the plasma treatment of real wastewater. When pharmaceutical effluent treatment was carried out in continuous flow reactor, 91.8% COD removal, 90.9% BOD removal and more than 90% degradation of all VOCs were achieved at a HRT of 150 min. Plasma treatment alone was capable of effectively treating the real pharmaceutical wastewater without any pre-treatment.

Oxidation of Aqueous Toluene by Gas-Phase Pulsed Corona Discharge in Air-Water Mixtures Followed by Photocatalytic Exhaust Air Cleaning

The treatment of wastewaters containing hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) requires the simultaneous treatment of both water and air. Refractory toluene, extensively studied for its removal, provides a basis for the comparison of its abatement methods. The oxidation of aqueous toluene by gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) in combination with the subsequent photocatalytic treatment of exhaust air was studied. The PCD treatment showed unequalled energy efficiencies in aqueous and gaseous toluene oxidation, reaching, respectively, up to 10.5 and 29.6 g·kW−1·h−1. The PCD exhaust air contained toluene residues and ozone in concentrations not exceeding 0.1 and 0.6 mg·L−1, respectively. As a result of the subsequent photocatalytic treatment, both airborne residues were eliminated within a contact time with TiO2 as short as 12 s. The results contribute to the possible application of the studied approach in closed-loop energy-saving ventilation systems.
