Geochemical fractionation and potential release behaviour of heavy metals in lead‒zinc smelting soils

Synthesis of ternary geopolymers using prediction for effective solidification of mercury in tailings

This study used steel slag, fly ash, and metakaolin as raw materials (SFM materials) to create silica-alumina-based geopolymers that can solidify Hg2+ when activated with sodium-based water glass. The experiments began with a triangular lattice point mixing design experiment, and the results were fitted, analyzed, and predicted. The optimum SFM material mass ratio was found to be 70% steel slag, 25% fly ash, and 5% metakaolin. The optimum modulus of the activator was identified by comparing the unconfined compressive strength and solidifying impact on Hg2+of geosynthetics with different modulus. The SFM geopolymer was then applied in the form of potting to cure the granulated mercury tailings. The inclusion of 50% SFM material generated a geosynthetic that reduced mercury transport to the surface soil by roughly 90%. The mercury concentration of herbaceous plant samples was also reduced by 78%. It indicates that the SFM material can effectively attenuate the migration transformation of mercury. Finally, characterization methods such as XPS and FTIR were used to investigate the mechanism of Hg2+ solidification by geopolymers generated by SFM materials. The possible solidification mechanisms were proposed as alkaline environment-induced mercury precipitation, chemical bonding s, surface adsorption of Hg2+ and its precipitates by the geopolymer, and physical encapsulation.

Lead toxicity regulation via protein degradation and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathways in Brassica species: A comparative quantitative analysis of proteomic study

Understanding the heavy metals (HMs) tolerance mechanism is crucial for improving plant growth in metal-contaminated soil. In order to evaluate the lead (Pb) tolerance mechanism in Brassica species, a comparative proteomic study was used. Thirteen-day-old seedlings of B. juncea and B. napus were treated with different Pb(NO3)2 concentrations at 0, 3, 30, and 300 mg/L. Under 300 mg/L Pb(NO3)2 concentration, B. napus growth was significantly decreased, while B. juncea maintained normal growth similar to the control. The Pb accumulation was also higher in B. napus root and shoot compared to B. juncea. Gel-free proteomic analysis of roots revealed a total of 68 and 37 differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) in B. juncea and B. napus-specifically, after 300 mg/L Pb exposure. The majority of these proteins are associated with protein degradation, cellular respiration, and enzyme classification. The upregulated RPT2 and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathway-associated proteins maintain the cellular homeostasis and photosynthetic rate in B. juncea. Among the 55 common DAPs, S-adenosyl methionine and TCA cycle proteins were upregulated in B. juncea and down-regulated in B. napus after Pb exposure. Furthermore, higher oxidative stress also reduced the antioxidant enzyme activity in B. napus. The current finding suggests that B. juncea is more Pb tolerant than B. napus, possibly due to the upregulation of proteins involved in protein recycling, degradation, and tetrapyrrole biosynthesis pathway.

Driving factors for distribution and transformation of heavy metals speciation in a zinc smelting site

Heavy metal pollution at an abandoned smelter pose a significant risk to environmental health. However, remediation strategies are constrained by inadequate knowledge of the polymetallic distribution, speciation patterns, and transformation factors at these sites. This study investigates the influence of soil minerals, heavy metal occurrence forms, and environmental factors on heavy metal migration behaviors and speciation transformations. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the minerals associated with heavy metals are mainly hematite, franklinite, sphalerite, and galena. Sequential extraction results suggest that lead and zinc are primarily present in the organic-sulfide fractions (F4) and residual form (F5) in the soil, accounting for over 70% of the total heavy metal content. Zinc displayed greater instability in carbonate-bound (16%) and exchangeable (2%) forms. The migration and diffusion patterns of heavy metals in the subsurface environment were visualized through the simulation of labile state heavy metals, demonstrating high congruence with groundwater pollution distribution patterns. The key environmental factors influencing heavy metal stable states (F4 and F5) were assessed by integrating random forest models and redundancy analysis. Primary factors facilitating Pb transformation into stable states were available phosphorus, clay content, depth, and soil organic matter. For Zn, the principal drivers were Mn oxides, soil organic matter, clay content, and inorganic sulfur ions. These findings enhance understanding of the distribution and transformation of heavy metal speciation and can provide valuable insights into controlling heavy metal pollution at non-ferrous smelting sites.

The role of reduced graphene oxide on mitigation of lead phytotoxicity in Triticum aestivum L.plants at morphological and physiological levels

Rapid global industrialization and an increase in population have enhanced the risk of heavy metals accumulation in plant bodies to disrupt the morphological, biochemical, and physiological processes of plants. To cope with this situation, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) NPs were used first time to mitigate abiotic stresses caused in plant. In this study, rGO NPs were synthesized and reduced with Tecoma stans plant leave extract through modified Hummer's methods. The well prepared rGO NPs were characterized by ultra-violet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Zeta potential, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, pot experiment was conducted with four different concentrations (15, 30, 60, 120 mg/L) of rGO NPs and three different concentrations (300, 500,700 mg/L) of lead (Pb) stress were applied. To observe the mitigative effects of rGO NPs, 30 mg/L of rGO NPs and 700 mg/L of Pb were used in combination. Changes in morphological and biochemical characteristics of wheat plants were observed for both Pb stress and rGO NPs treatments. Pb was found to inhibit the morphological and biochemical characteristics of plants. rGO NPs alone as well as in combination with Pb was found to increase the chlorophyll content of wheat plants. Under Pb stress conditions and rGO NPs treatments, antioxidant enzyme activities like ascorbate peroxidases (APX), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) were observed. Current findings revealed that greenly reduced graphene oxide NPs can effectively promote growth in wheat plants under Pb stress by elevating chlorophyll content of leaves, reducing the Pb uptake, and suppressing ROS produced due to Pb toxicity.

Co-utilization of sepiolite and ferromanganese ore reduces rice Cd and As concentrations via soil immobilization and root Fe-Mn plaque resistance

Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As), common toxic elements in farmland soil, are easily absorbed by rice and accumulate in grains. Combined amendment is likely to ameliorate Cd-As-contaminated soil; however, studies on this aspect are limited. Therefore, we explored the effects of co-utilizing sepiolite and ferromanganese ore (SF) on Cd-As accumulation in rice by conducting pot experiments on Cd-As-contaminated paddy soil. The results showed that 4 g kg-1 SF (4SF) reduced Cd (55.9 %/48.5 %) and As (82.9 %/64.7 %) concentrations in grain in early and late rice. The Fe concentration in Fe-Mn plaque (IMP) (FeIMP) first decreased and then increased, and the Mn concentration in IMP (MnIMP) increased with an increase in the SF addition amount. This resulted in the 4SF treatment maximizing the Cd adsorption capacity of IMP, whereas the 2 g kg-1 SF treatment (2SF) minimized the As adsorption capacity of IMP. More importantly, when the total Cd and As were 9.7 mg kg-1 and 304.2 mg kg-1, respectively, in the soil, 4SF application reduced CaCl2-extractable Cd (80.5 %/87.9 %), and 2SF reduced available As (24.0 %/20.9 %) in early and late rice. Additionally, SF decreased the Cd and As ion contents in soil pore water. Overall, SF has good immobilization and sustained effect on Cd-As and can be used as an effective material for remediation of Cd-As-contaminated soil.

Effective Stabilization of Cadmium and Copper in Iron-Rich Laterite-Based Geopolymers and Influence on Physical Properties

This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of a geopolymer binder of the type of Na-poly(ferro-silico-aluminate) as a matrix for the stabilization of heavy metals along with their effect on the development of structural performances. The artificial contamination of soil with ions was carried out and used to prepare an alkali-activated iron-rich lateritic soil binder. Further, various microstructural analyses were carried out to explain the stabilization mechanism. The stabilization efficiency was assessed by leaching tests in de-ionized water and hydrochloric acid (0.1 M, HCl). Then, the physical properties were determined to evaluate the impact of heavy metals on the structural performance of the binder. Results demonstrated that the prepared geopolymer binder has the lowest stabilization capacity in an acidic medium (low pH) than in water with high pH. However, the stabilization of Cu ions was effective at 99%, while the Cd ion is barely retained in the matrix. Firstly, the mechanism consists of chemical bonds through ion exchange with sodium of the Na-poly(ferro-silico-aluminate) network. Secondly, through physical interaction with the pore network of the matrix, the heavy metals induced structural deterioration in the geopolymer matrix with a decrease in the compressive strength and bulk density and an increase of both apparent porosity and water absorption.
