Semiconductor water-based inks: Miniaturized NiO pseudocapacitor electrodes by inkjet printing

Direct Inkjet Printing of Digitally Designed 2D TiN Patterns

TiN is a non-oxidic ceramic widely employed as a hard coating material for cutting tools due to its high thermal and chemical stability. Among all 2D coating techniques, Inkjet printing (IJP) is one of the most promising for the fabrication of layers with customized designs. However, despite its advantages, this process has not been used so far with this material. In this work, we prepared TiN suspensions for their implementation in IJP with a nozzle of 70 μm. A complete study of the ink properties was performed to formulate a suitable ink with a high level of dispersion and to evaluate the jetting during the printing process. Moreover, after a sintering process at 1100 °C under vacuum, a complete hardness analysis of the coated discs was performed, resulting in values ranging from ~4 to 7 GPa, depending on the grid design.

How to Make Porous Piezoelectrics? Review on Processing Strategies

Ferroelectric ceramics are a technologically important class of materials that are currently exploited in actuators, sensors, transducers, and memory devices. The introduction of porosity into these materials has been proved to be an effective tool for tuning functional properties for specific applications, such as piezoelectric and pyroelectric devices and energy harvesters. In this review, a comprehensive description of the most widely used processing techniques able to produce porous ferroelectric ceramics is reported. In particular, the state-of-the-art production strategies including replica technique, direct foaming, sacrificial template method, and additive manufacturing used up to now for the realization of porous piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT)-based structures are critically reviewed and rationalized. Moreover, this work aims to give concrete indications on the more effective and actual production strategies that should be exploited for the development of porous PZT-based materials for the specific applications. Finally, two case studies are reported to remark the critical importance of material-processing-microstructure correlations on the functional properties of the designed devices.

Inkjet-Printing Technology for Supercapacitor Application: Current State and Perspectives

Inkjet-printing (IJP) technology is recognized as a significant breakthrough in manufacturing high-performance electrochemical energy storage systems. In comparison to conventional fabrication protocols, this printing technique offers various advantages, such as contact-less high-resolution patterning capability; low-cost, controlled material deposition; process simplicity; and compatibility with a variety of substrates. Due to these outstanding merits, significant research efforts have been devoted to utilizing IJP technology in developing electrochemical energy storage devices, particularly in supercapacitors (SCs). These attempts have focused on fabricating the key components of SCs, including electrode, electrolyte, and current collector, through rational formulation and patterning of functional inks. In an attempt to further expand the material design strategy and accelerate technology development, it is urgent and essential to obtain an in-depth insight into the recent developments of inkjet-printed SCs. Toward this aim, first, a general introduction to the fundamental principles of IJP technology is provided. After that, the latest achievements in IJP of capacitive energy storage devices are systematically summarized and discussed with a particular emphasis on the design of printable functional materials, the printing process, and capacitive performance of inkjet-printed SCs. To close, existing challenges and future research trends for developing state-of-the-art inkjet-printed SCs are proposed.

On-Substrate Joule Effect Heating by Printed Micro-Heater for the Preparation of ZnO Semiconductor Thin Film

Fabrication of printed electronic devices along with other parts such as supporting structures is a major problem in modern additive fabrication. Solution-based inkjet printing of metal oxide semiconductor usually requires a heat treatment step to facilitate the formation of target material. The employment of external furnace introduces additional complexity in the fabrication scheme, which is supposed to be simplified by the additive manufacturing process. This work presents the fabrication and utilization of micro-heater on the same thermal resistive substrate with the printed precursor pattern to facilitate the formation of zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor. The ultraviolet (UV) photodetector fabricated by the proposed scheme was successfully demonstrated. The performance characterization of the printed devices shows that increasing input heating power can effectively improve the electrical properties owing to a better formation of ZnO. The proposed approach using the on-substrate heating element could be useful for the additive manufacturing of functional material by eliminating the necessity of external heating equipment, and it allows in-situ annealing for the printed semiconductor. Hence, the integration of the printed electronic device with printing processes of other materials could be made possible.
