Laser-Based Manufacturing of Ceramics: A Review

Ceramics are widely used in microelectronics, semiconductor manufacturing, medical devices, aerospace, and aviation, cutting tools, precision optics, MEMS and NEMS devices, insulating components, and ceramic molds. But the fabrication and machining of the ceramic-based materials by conventional processes are always difficult due to their higher hardness and mechanical properties. Therefore, advanced manufacturing techniques are being preferred for these advanced materials, and out of that, laser-based processes are widely used. The benefits of laser fabrication and machining of ceramics include high precision, reduced thermal damage, non-contact processing, and the ability to work with complex geometries. Laser technology continues to advance, enabling even more intricate and diverse applications for ceramics in a wide range of industries. This paper explains various laser based ceramic processing techniques, such as selective laser sintering and melting, and laser machining techniques, such as laser drilling, etc. Identifying and optimizing the process parameters that influence the output quality of laser processed parts is the key technique to improving the quality, which is also focused on in this paper. It aims to facilitate the researchers by providing knowledge on laser-based manufacturing of ceramics and their composites to establish the field further.

The Effect of Glass Fiber Powder on the Properties of Waterborne Coatings with Thermochromic Ink on a Chinese Fir Surface

In this study, the effect of glass fiber powder on the properties of waterborne coatings with thermochromic ink was investigated, using Chinese fir board as the base material and temperature-sensitive thermochromic waterborne coatings with thermochromic ink as the paint base. The concentration of glass fiber powder was determined when the microstructure, optical properties, mechanical properties, liquid resistance, and heat preservation effect were the best. The results showed that the paint film with glass fiber powder concentration of 1.0% to 7.0% had better discoloration performance. With an increase of the glass fiber powder concentration, the gloss of the paint film decreased gradually, and when the concentration of glass fiber powder was 0% to 5.0%, the gloss of the paint film was better. The concentration of glass fiber powder had no effect on the adhesion, impact resistance, and liquid resistance. In the first 2.5 min, the temperature value of the waterborne coating with 3.0% glass fiber powder was higher than that without glass fiber powder, which has a certain heat preservation effect. When the glass fiber powder content was 3.0%, the microstructure of paint film was the best. The composition of paint film with different glass fiber powder concentrations was not different and the discoloration performance of paint film with heat preservation effect was not affected by time. The analysis showed that the waterborne coating with 3.0% glass fiber powder had the best comprehensive performance. This work provides a technical reference for the industrialization of heat preservation and thermochromic coating on wood.

Influence of LBE Temperatures on the Microstructure and Properties of Crystalline and Amorphous Multiphase Ceramic Coatings

An Al2O3–TiO2 amorphous composite coating with a thickness of 100–120 μm was fabricated on China low activation martensitic steel (CLAM steel) by oxygen acetylene flame spraying technology and the laser in-situ reaction method. We investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of the coating after liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) alloy corrosion under different temperatures for 300 h and found that the corrosion temperature of the LBE had no observable effect on the microstructure and chemical phase of the Al2O3–TiO2 amorphous composite coatings. However, the mechanical properties (micro-hardness and shear strength) of the Al2O3–TiO2 multiphase coating deteriorated slightly with the increase in the immersion temperature of the LBE. As a result of oxygen acetylene flame spraying and laser in-situ reaction technology, it was found that the Al2O3–TiO2 amorphous composite coating exhibits an excellent LBE corrosion resistance, which is a candidate structural material for the accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) to handle nuclear waste under extreme conditions.
