The role of an equine nutritionist in equine health, performance and wellbeing: Ideas stemming from an equine science society symposium workshop

In the United States, there is little clarity on the qualifications and availability of equine nutritionists. Currently, no regulatory body exists for formal credentialing outside of veterinary medicine. Most equine nutritionists are not veterinarians but do have advanced scientific degrees (Master of Science and/or Doctor of Philosophy) in the field of Animal Science. However, not all reporting to be equine nutritionists have formal education in the field of equine nutrition. To discuss this, a workshop was held at the 2023 Equine Science Society (ESS) meeting. The purpose of this discussion was to share ideas among equine nutrition professionals about how best to provide support for the inclusion of the specialty as part of a horse's health team, alongside the veterinarian, farrier and other equine health specialists. In human, small animal and livestock practices, the importance of nutrition as part of an overall health, production (livestock) and well-being plan has been documented. However, surveys of veterinarians, the top source of information for horse owners, reveal a lack of confidence in the area of nutrition after graduating from veterinary school and a lack of available continuing education opportunities to learn more. Further, it appears that many horse owners may unknowingly be obtaining nutrition information from unverified sources (such as the internet). The discussion included formal and informal education of equine nutritionists, as well as avenues to open lines of communication with the veterinary community to provide nutrition resources for horse owners, managers and veterinarians.

Animal obesity: What insights can a one health approach offer when it comes to veterinarians 'making every contact count'?

There is an overweight/obesity crisis in both human and companion animal populations globally. Veterinarians have an ethical obligation to protect animal welfare and, therefore, have a duty to intervene by supporting their clients in changing care plans to mitigate and prevent pet overweight/obesity. Currently, there is limited evidence in veterinary contexts for when and how this can be done effectively. In contrast, a more comprehensive body of literature has been developed on how human healthcare practitioners 'make every contact count' (MECC). This review begins by briefly exploring the cross-species multifactorial causes of overweight/obesity, before considering the literature regarding whether veterinarians reliably address overweight/obesity and the obstacles they encounter. The review then explores the evidence from human healthcare contexts in terms of how person-centred and health 'coaching-style' MECC interventions have supported weight management in adult and child populations and the barriers practitioners face when implementing these interventions. The final section interprets this literature to provide a fresh 'lens' through which veterinarians' concerns can be understood. Recommendations are made for enhancing veterinarians' capacity to develop the knowledge and skills needed for successful outcomes when MECC. Opportunities for developing local multi-stakeholder/agency teams taking a 'one health' approach are considered.

Why isn't the transition period getting the attention it deserves? Farm advisors' opinions and experiences of managing dairy cow health in the transition period

During the transition period three weeks before and after calving the dairy cow is at greater risk of developing disease, to the detriment of welfare and production. An understanding of the reasons why and how farmers and their advisors engage in efforts to control metabolic disease during the transition period is required if these diseases are to be more successfully controlled. The study reported here, based on interview research, investigates the opinions and behaviours of farm advisors on transition cow management and nutrition, their experiences of working with their respective farm clients, and interactions with other farm advisors to help manage transition cow health and productivity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 veterinary advisors and 12 non-veterinary advisors (nutritionists, feed company representatives and independent consultants) in England. A key theme emerging from this qualitative data was a perceived lack of focussed transition management advice provided by advisors. Reasons for suboptimal or lack of appropriate advice included: time pressures for advisors to visit as many farms as possible; avoiding the investigation of areas of potential improvement, for fear of not meeting transition health and performance targets; financial disincentives for nutritionists, as the sales commission attributed to transition cow feeding was small relative to the main milking herd; and a lack of confidence in the subject. Other aspects included the responsibility of providing transition advice which was perceived to be high-risk, a lack of cooperation between veterinarians and nutritionists, and the perceived varying competencies of nutritionists. The findings demonstrate the importance of the varied influences of 'people factors' on transition cow health such as the nature of the advisor-farmer relationship, advisor-farmer communication and herd-level advisor collaboration on transition cow health and management.

What Would Be Good for All Veterinarians to Know About Equine Nutrition

Nutrition and management have enabling and supporting roles to play in the health, welfare, and performance of equines. Poor or inappropriate nutrition may therefore impose limits on an animal's ability to perform and adversely affect health and welfare. Understanding the gastrointestinal tract from a nutrition perspective can help to reduce the risk of certain clinical problems. This article outlines key factors with respect to the equine digestive tract and discusses relevant aspects of ration formation. Forage is highlighted, because inappropriate forage provision is one of the key limitations in many horse diets.
