Fatty acid profiles and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) biosynthesis capacity of three dual purpose chicken breeds

BLOOD FATTY ACID PROFILES IN CHILEAN (PHOENICOPTERUS CHILENSIS) AND CARIBBEAN (PHOENICOPTERUS RUBER) FLAMINGOS IN MANAGED CARE

Flamingos in managed care are vulnerable to inflammatory states, including pododermatitis, trauma, and capture myopathy. Fatty acids are an important component of well-balanced nutrition and crucial to endogenous immune responses associated with these conditions, yet fatty acids have not been assessed in flamingos. This study reported complete whole blood circulating fatty acid profiles in two flamingo species in managed care receiving different diets. Whole blood from Chilean flamingos (Phoenicopterus chilensis) (n=16) and Caribbean flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) (n=17) was collected during routine exams and prepared on blood spot cards for complete fatty acid profile analysis in which 24 individual fatty acids, nine fatty acids groups, and four calculated parameters were quantifiable. Non-parametric statistical analysis compared profiles between species, and between sex of Chilean flamingos. The median ratio of omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids was 5.64. Chilean flamingos had significantly (P<0.05) higher percentages of 11 individual fatty acids, total polyunsaturated and highly unsaturated fatty acids, total omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4w6)/eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5w3) ratio, and total EPA + DHA, whereas Caribbean flamingos had significantly (P<0.05) higher percentages of eight individual fatty acids, and total saturated fatty acids. Male Chilean flamingos had significantly (P<0.05) higher percentages of AA, EPA, and total polyunsaturated fatty acids, whereas females had significantly (P<0.05) higher oleic acid (18:1w9), total monounsaturated fatty acids, and total omega-9 fatty acids. Differences reported are highly attributable to variability in diet, although differences in fatty acid synthesizing pathways and hormonal influences may also play a role. This novel fatty acid data set in healthy flamingos is a valuable reference for complete health evaluations in managed care settings. Further comparisons with controlled diets and inclusion of free-ranging animals may enhance clinical utility.

Fabrication, characterization, and purification of nutraceutical diacylglycerol components from Camellia oil

Converting triacylgycerols (TAGs) from edible oils and fats into structured diacylglycerols (DAGs) is meaningful for reducing obesity. Camellia oil, rich in linoleic acid, has the potential to form structured linoleic acid-1,3-diacylglycerol (LA-1,3-DAG) nutrients in the industry. In this research, the physicochemical properties of modified Camellia oil (MCO) by enzymatic esterification were analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Evaporative Light Scattering Detection (HPLC-ELSD), and Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The relationship between reaction conditions and the DAG compositions is disclosed using multiple factors. It is found that high constituents of DAG increase the melting and crystallization temperature of MCO, lipase Novozym 435 gives the best yield of targeted nutrients (DAG, 1,3-DAG, LA-DAG), and the mixture of lipases, Lipozyme TL IM and Lipozyme RM IM, shows a synergistic effect in the synthetic process of DAG. Subsequently, MCO containing 65.4% DAG, 54.7% LA-DAG, and 47.6% 1,3-DAG content at optimal conditions (2% enzyme dosage, 4 h reaction time, 2.4:1 substrate molar ratio, 25.8% t-butanol as solvent, 60°C temperature) has been obtained and purified using silica column to obtain the final DAG oil containing 96.1% DAG, 64.7% 1,3-DAG, and 78.4% LA-DAG. High constituents of structured DAG oil rich in LA-1,3-DAG can be obtained by enzymatic esterification for industrial production.

Supplementary n-3 fatty acids sources on performance and formation of omega-3 in egg of laying hens: a meta-analysis

A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the effects of supplementary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) sources in the diet on the formation of some important n-3 PUFA contents in eggs and to assess factors contributing to the conversion efficiency of omega-3 in laying hens. A dataset was constructed from 34 studies examining the impact of dietary inclusion with ingredients rich in n-3 PUFA on fatty acids profile and production performance of laying hens. The eligibility criteria were developed to obtain studies reporting required information with sufficient quality. The mixed model methodology was employed where the “study” was set as random effects and fatty acid (FA) supplements as fixed effects. Several factors were included in the models as covariates. Discrete analysis for sources of FA was also performed to compare their effects on FA formation in eggs. Significant linear positive associations were observed between the concentration of α-linolenic acid (ALA), total n-3 PUFA, and the ratio of linoleic acid (LA) to ALA (LA/ALA) in diets with the formation of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), total n-3 PUFA, and n6/n3 ratio in egg (P < 0.05) with different magnitudes. ALA and total n-3 PUFAs concentration had no relationship with cholesterol concentration, feed intake, and egg weight. Prediction models for DHA formation was higher for ALA as predictor variables (slope = 0.482; R² = 0.684) than n-3 PUFAs (slopes = 0.998, R² = 0.628). Significant interactions were found on the level of ALA × FA sources and n-3 PUFA × FA sources. Fish oil (P = 0.0148, R² = 0.732) improved the prediction equation to estimate DHA formation. To conclude, levels of ALA, n-3 PUFA, and the ratio of LA/ALA can be used as predictor variables to estimate the formation of n-3 fatty acids in eggs. It was confirmed that although all n-3 FA sources had a positive correlation on DHA and n-3 PUFA deposition, however, fish oil showed the highest prediction model for DHA formation across all FA sources included in the dataset.
