Abstract
Camellia oleifera (C. oleifera) is a woody oil plant with a good reputation of 'Oriental Olive Oil' in China. The national understanding of the health-care benefits of Camellia oil are already widespread, but the production of C. oleifera fruit has not been achieved large-scale industrialisation. In this review, we focus on the properties and commercial value of its natural products, and processing technology, performance characterisation, and novel modification strategies of its processed products. In addition, we briefly summarised the research progress of breeding and put forward the comprehensive utilisation of C. oleifera fruit based on the tandem of extraction and processing. This review might attract more researchers to make profound study regarding it as an alternative of olive oil.

Abstract
Camellia seed oil (CSO), as a nutrient-rich edible oil, is widely used in foods, cosmetics, and other fields. In this work, the extraction, deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization processes of CSO were respectively optimized for meeting injectable oil standards. The results showed that the CSO extraction rate reached the highest level of 94% at optimized conditions (ultrasonic time, 31.2 min; reaction pH, 9.2; and reaction time, 3.5 h). The physicochemical indexes of CSO and 10 other vegetable oils were evaluated by the principal component analysis method, and the overall scores of vegetable oils were ranked as camellia seed oil > olive oil > rice oil > peanut oil > sesame oil > corn oil > soybean oil > sunflower oil > rapeseed oil > walnut oil > flaxseed oil. The physicochemical indicators of CSO were the most ideal among the 11 vegetable oils, which means that CSO is suitable as an injectable oil. Through the optimized processes of the deacidification, decolorization, and deodorization, the CSO acid value was reduced to 0.0515 mg KOH/g, the decolorization rate reached a maximum of 93.86%, and the OD430 was 0.015, meeting the requirement (≤0.045 of OD430) of injectable oil. After the deodorization process, these parameters of the refractive index, acid value, saponification value, iodine value, absorbance, unsaponifiable, moisture and volatiles, fatty acid composition, and heavy metal limits all met the pharmacopoeia standards of injectable oil in many countries and regions. The possibility of CSO as an injectable oil was first verified through refining-process optimization and nutritional index analysis, providing an important technical reference for the high-value utilization of vegetable oil.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera oil is a pure and natural high-grade oil prevalent in South China. Camellia oleifera oil is known for its richness in unsaturated fatty acids and high nutritional value. There is increasing evidence indicating that a diet rich in unsaturated fatty acids is beneficial to health. Despite the widespread production of Camellia oleifera oil and its bioactive components, reports on its nutritional components are scarce, especially regarding systematic reviews of extraction methods and biological functions. This review systematically summarized the latest research on the bioactive components and biological functions of Camellia oleifera oil reported over the past decade. In addition to unsaturated fatty acids, Camellia oleifera oil contains six main functional components contributing to its antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular protective properties. These functional components are vitamin E, saponins, polyphenols, sterols, squalene, and flavonoids. This paper reviewed the biological activity of Camellia oleifera oil and its extraction methods, laying a foundation for further development of its bioactive components.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera is a medicine food homology plant widely cultivated in the Yangtze River Basin and southern China due to its camellia oil. Camellia oleifera bud and fruit exist simultaneously, and its bud is largely discarded as waste. However, C. oleifera bud has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat a variety of ailments. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the chemical components of C. oleifera bud ethanol extract (EE) and first evaluate its anticancer effects in non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells. Based on UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap-MS analysis, seventy components were identified. For anticancer activity, C. oleifera bud EE had remarkable cytotoxic effect on non-small cell lung cancer A549 (IC50: 57.53 ± 1.54 μg/mL) and NCI-H1299 (IC50: 131.67 ± 4.32 μg/mL) cells, while showed lower cytotoxicity on non-cancerous MRC-5 (IC50 > 320 μg/mL) and L929 (IC50: 179.84 ± 1.08 μg/mL) cells. It dramatically inhibited the proliferation of A549 cells by inducing cell cycle arrest at the G1 phase. Additionally, it induced apoptosis in A549 cells through a mitochondria-mediated pathway, which decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, upregulated Bax, activated caspase 9 and caspase 3, and resulted in PARP cleavage. Wound healing and transwell invasion assays demonstrated that C. oleifera bud EE inhibited the migration and invasion of A549 cells in a dose-dependent manner. The above findings indicated that C. oleifera bud EE revealed notable anticancer effects by inhibiting proliferation, inducing apoptosis, and suppressing migration and invasion of A549 cells. Hence, C. oleifera bud ethanol extract could serve as a new source of natural anticancer drugs.

Abstract
Geographical Indication (GI) agricultural products possess specific geographical origins and high qualities, which require an effective geographical origin traceability method for the important protective trademarks. In this study, authentication models for Changshan camellia oil were developed by fatty acid profiles and one-class classification methods including data-driven soft independent modeling of class analogy (DD-SIMCA) and one-class partial least squares (OCPLS), and compared with traditional two-class classification models. The results indicated that the prediction errors of three two-class classification models were 63.8%, 12.1%, and 65.2% for the samples out of targeted geographical origins, respectively. By contrast, the one-class classification models could completely differentiate Changshan from non-Changshan camellia oils, even from the adjacent counties. Moreover, compared with traditional indicators of mineral elements, the model built by fatty acid profiles possessed higher sensitivity and specificity. It also offered a reference strategy for the geographical origin identification of other high-value oils or foods.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera fruit shells are often discarded as byproducts in the C. oleifera industry. There is a general interest in isolating high-value natural products to valorize those fruit shells with green, rapid, and effective extraction methods. This study employed 43 combinations of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to extract polysaccharides from C. oleifera fruit shells. Two choline chloride-based DESs and a ternary DES with propionic acid and 1,3-butanediol as hydrogen bond donors exhibited relatively high extraction efficiency. The polysaccharide yield reached 15.03 ± 0.35 % under optimized extraction time (55 min), extraction temperature (70 °C), and DES water content (33.33 %). The physicochemical composition and preliminary structure of obtained polysaccharides were characterized. Additionally, DESs-extracted polysaccharides exhibited higher in vitro antioxidant activities and hypoglycemic effects compared to water-extracted polysaccharides. These findings suggested that the optimized DES-assisted extraction method could be a potential approach for polysaccharides extraction from C. oleifera.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop core-shell nanofibers by emulsion electrospinning using zein-stabilized emulsions to encapsulate camellia oil effectively. The increasing oil volume fraction (φ from 10% to 60%) increased the apparent viscosity and average droplet size of emulsions, resulting in the average diameter of electrospun fibers increasing from 124.5 nm to 286.2 nm. The oil droplets as the core were randomly distributed in fibers in the form of beads, and the core-shell structure of fibers was observed in TEM images. FTIR indicated that hydrogen bond interactions occurred between zein and camellia oil molecules. The increasing oil volume fraction enhanced the thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and water stability of electrospun nanofiber films. The core-shell nanofibers with 10%, 20%, 40%, and 60% camellia oil showed encapsulation efficiency of 78.53%, 80.25%, 84.52%, and 84.39%, respectively, and had good storage stability. These findings contribute to developing zein-based core-shell electrospun fibers to encapsulate bioactive substances.

Abstract
In recent decades, plants have strengthened their relevance as sources of molecules potentially beneficial for health. This underpinning effect also arises from the extensive research that has been conducted on plants that are typically undervalued, besides being scarcely used. This is the case with Camellia japonica in Galicia (NW Spain), where, despite its abundance, it is exclusively used for ornamental purposes and has been studied only for its proximate composition. Thus, the present study was conducted on several additional parameters in the flowers of eight C. japonica varieties. Our results show that camellia has a high nutritional value, with carbohydrates as the most abundant macronutrients followed by a moderate protein content (4.4-6.3 g/100 g dry weight) and high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (especially ω-3 fatty acids, which represent 12.9-22.7% of the total fatty acids), raising its potential for use for nutritional purposes. According to the thermochemical characterization and elemental composition of camellia, the raw material has poor mineralization and low nitrogen content, but high percentages of volatile matter and high carbon-fixation rates, making it a promising alternative for biofuel production. Furthermore, preliminary analysis reveals a high concentration of different bioactive compounds. As a result of these findings, camellias can be used as food or functional ingredients to improve the nutritional quality of food formulations.

Abstract
Camellia oil (CO) is a high medicinal and nutritional value edible oil. However, its ability to alleviate fat accumulation in high-fat Caenorhabditis elegans has not been well elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of CO on fat accumulation in high-fat C. elegans via transcriptome and metabolome analysis. The results showed that CO significantly reduced fat accumulation in high-fat C. elegans by 10.34% (Oil Red O method) and 11.54% (TG content method), respectively. Furthermore, CO primarily altered the transcription levels of genes involved in longevity regulating pathway. Specifically, CO decreased lipid storage in high-fat C. elegans by inhibiting fat synthesis. In addition, CO supplementation modulated the abundance of metabolic biomarkers related to pyrimidine metabolism and riboflavin metabolism. The integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses indicated that CO supplementation could alleviate fat accumulation in high-fat C. elegans by regulating retinol metabolism, drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, and pentose and glucuronate interconversions. Overall, these findings highlight the potential health benefits of CO that could potentially be used as a functional edible oil.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera a member of the family Theaceae, is a phosphorus (P) tolerator native to southern China. The SPX gene family critically regulates plant growth and development and maintains phosphate (Pi) homeostasis. However, the involvement of SPX genes in Pi signaling in Tea-Oil Camellia remains unknown. In this work, 20 SPX genes were identified and categorized into four subgroups. Conserved domains, motifs, gene structure, chromosomal location and gene duplication events were also investigated in the SPX gene family. Defense and stress responsiveness cis-elements were identified in the SPX gene promoters, which participated in low-Pi stress responses. Based on transcriptome data and qRT-PCR results, nine CoSPX genes had similar expression patterns and eight genes (except CoPHO1H3) were up-regulated at 30 days after exposure to low-Pi stress. CoSPX-MFS3 was selected as a key candidate gene by WGCNA analysis. CoSPX-MFS3 was a tonoplast protein. Overexpression of CoSPX-MFS3 in Arabidopsis promoted the accumulation of total P content and decreased the anthocyanin content. Overexpression of CoSPX-MFS3 could enhance low-Pi tolerance by increased biomass and organic acid contents in transgenic Arabidopsis lines. Furthermore, the expression patterns of seven phosphate starvation genes were higher in transgenic Arabidopsis than those in the wild type. These results highlight novel physiological roles of the SPX family genes in C. oleifera under low-Pi stress, and lays the foundation for a deeper knowledge of the response mechanism of C. oleifera to low-Pi stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the current study, we investigated the effects of camellia oil and camellia oil infused with herbs (Camellia oleifera Abel) on obesity in obese mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD). METHODS The antioxidant activity of camellia oil in scavenging free radicals was investigated. Additionally, body and organ weight changes, serum and liver marker parameters, antioxidant enzyme activities, liver and epididymal fat histology, protein and gene expression associated with lipogenesis and hyperglycemia effect on adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation, were examined in HFD-induced obese mice. RESULTS The hepatic steatosis and epididymal fat were significantly reduced by the oral administration of camellia oil and herb-infused camellia oil. Moreover, hepatic and serum marker parameters such as total cholesterol, insulin, triglycerides, tumor necrosis factor-α, adiponectin, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine transaminase were beneficially impacted. Additionally, the activity of antioxidant enzymes also increased. Camellia oil and herb-infused camellia oil treatments reduced the expression of genes linked to hyperglycemia and lipogenesis via activation of AMPK phosphorylation. CONCLUSION For many people, exercise poses an obstacle in the daily routine due to lack of ease, difficulty in maintaining consistency, and hard work. Camellia oil combined with herbs has anti-obesity and antihyperglycemic effects. These findings indicate that treatment with herb-infused camellia oil is most beneficial for elderly individuals who do not prefer frequent exercise.

Abstract
Oil-tea (Camellia oleifera) is a woody oil crop whose nectar includes galactose derivatives that are toxic to honey bees. Interestingly, some mining bees of the genus Andrena can entirely live on the nectar (and pollen) of oil-tea and are able to metabolize these galactose derivatives. We present the first next-generation genomes for five and one Andrena species that are, respectively, specialized and non-specialized oil-tea pollinators and, combining these with the published genomes of six other Andrena species which did not visit oil-tea, we performed molecular evolution analyses on the genes involved in the metabolizing of galactose derivatives. The six genes (NAGA, NAGA-like, galM, galK, galT, and galE) involved in galactose derivatives metabolism were identified in the five oil-tea specialized species, but only five (with the exception of NAGA-like) were discovered in the other Andrena species. Molecular evolution analyses revealed that NAGA-like, galK, and galT in oil-tea specialized species appeared under positive selection. RNASeq analyses showed that NAGA-like, galK, and galT were significantly up-regulated in the specialized pollinator Andrena camellia compared to the non-specialized pollinator Andrena chekiangensis. Our study demonstrated that the genes NAGA-like, galK, and galT have played an important role in the evolutionary adaptation of the oil-tea specialized Andrena species.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera Abel. is an economically important woody oil plant native to China. To explore the genetic diversity of wild C. oleifera phenotypic traits and effectively protect these germplasm resources, this study provides a thorough evaluation of the phenotypic variability of a cluster of 143 wild C. oleifera germplasm resources. A total of 41 characters, including leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, and oil quality characters, were investigated based on the quantization of physical and chemical descriptors and digital image analysis. The findings revealed significant variations among the 41 characters with a high range of Shannon-Wiener indexes (H') from 0.07 to 2.19. The coefficient of variation (CV) among 32 quantitative characters ranged from 5.34% to 81.31%, with an average of 27.14%. High genetic diversity was also detected among the 143 germplasm. Based on the analysis of hierarchical clustering, 143 accessions were separated into six categories. All the individuals can be clearly distinguished from each other according to the result of the principal component analysis (PCA). The M-TOPSIS exhaustive evaluation method based on correlation and PCA analyses of 32 quantitative characters was applied for the 143 wild C. oleifera accessions, and the top 10 varieties were identified as YA53, YA13, YA40, YA34, YA57, YA19, YA33, YA41, DZ8, and YA7. This research optimized the germplasm evaluation system and perfected the statistical phenotypic traits for distinctness, uniformity, and stability (DUS) testing. Some top-notch germplasm sources were also screened for oil-tea Camellia breeding.

Abstract
The camellia seed cake proteins (CP) used in this study were individually hydrolyzed with neutral protease, alkaline protease, papain, and trypsin. The results showed that the hydrolysate had the highest ACE inhibitory activity at 67.36 ± 0.80% after four hours of neutral protease hydrolysis. Val-Val-Val-Pro-Gln-Asn (VVVPQN) was then obtained through ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-25 gel chromatography separation, LC-MS/MS analysis, and in silico screening. VVVPQN had ACE inhibitory activity with an IC50 value of 0.13 mg/mL (198.66 μmol/L), and it inhibited ACE in a non-competitive manner. The molecular docking indicated that VVVPQN can combine with ACE to form eight hydrogen bonds. The results of the stability study showed that VVVPQN maintained high ACE-inhibitory activity in weakly acidic and neutral environments and that heat treatment (20-80 °C) and Na+, Mg2+, as well as Fe3+ metal ions had little effect on the activity of VVVPQN. Moreover, it remained relatively stable after in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion. These results revealed that VVVPQN identified in camellia seed cake has the potential to be applied in functional food or antihypertensive drugs.

Abstract
C. oleifera is an economically important oilseed crop and medical plant. However, as a characteristic honey resource, the standard protocol used to identify the composition of C. oleifera honey has not been established yet. Previously, distinctive flavonoid has been shown as an effective marker to trace the botanical origin of honey. In this study, we examined the flavonoid types in C. oleifera honey and nine other monofloral honeys by using liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and compared the differences and identified eight distinct flavonoids in C. oleifera honey. Then, comparing the 8 flavonoids with the 14 flavonoids common to C. oleifera honey and nectar, two distinct flavonoids were identified in C. oleifera honey and nectar. Finally, we identified kaempferitrin as the distinct flavonoid marker in C. oleifera honey using the degree of influence of the partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model on C. oleifera honey and ployfloral honey.

Abstract
To explore the effect and its mechanism of alkali-assisted phosphorylation on the functional properties of Camellia Oleifera seeds cake glutelin (CSCG), CSCG was treated with different concentration of sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5%, w/v) in different pH environment (3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 9.0, and 11.0). The results showed that alkali assist improved the phosphorylation degree of CSCG, and the optimum pH value is 9.0. FT-IR and XPS confirmed the successful modification of phosphate groups on CSCG through covalent interaction. Alkali-assisted phosphorylation decreased the particle size and increased electronegativity of CSCG, as well as changed in its surface hydrophobicity, crystallinity, and intrinsic fluorescence. All these changes of protein structure triggered by alkali-assisted phosphorylation led to the improvement of water solubility, water/oil absorption capacity, emulsifying ability, foamability, and in vitro digestibility of CSCG. Abstract
Oiltea-camellia (C. oleifera) is a widely cultivated woody oil crop in Southern China and Southeast Asia. The genome of oiltea-camellia was very complex and not well explored. Recently, genomes of three oiltea-camellia species were sequenced and assembled, multi-omic studies of oiltea-camellia were carried out and provided a better understanding of this important woody oil crop. In this review, we summarized the recent assembly of the reference genomes of oiltea-camellia, genes related to economic traits (flowering, photosynthesis, yield and oil component), disease resistance (anthracnose) and environmental stress tolerances (drought, cold, heat and nutrient deficiency). We also discussed future directions of integrating multiple omics for evaluating genetic resources and mining key genes of important traits, and the application of new molecular breeding and gene editing technologies to accelerate the breeding process of oiltea-camellia.

Abstract
Bioplastic derived from renewable lignocellulosic biomass is an attractive alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Herein, Callmellia oleifera shells (COS), a unique byproduct from tea oil industry, were delignified and converted into high-performance bio-based films via a green citric acid treatment (15 %, 100 °C and 24 h), taking advantage of their high hemicellulose content. The structure-property relations of COS holocellulose (COSH) films were systematically analyzed considering different treatment conditions. The surface reactivity of COSH was improved via a partial hydrolysis route and strong hydrogen bonding formed between the holocellulose micro/nanofibrils. COSH films exhibited high mechanical strength, high optical transmittance, improved thermal stability, and biodegradability. A mechanical blending pretreatment of COSH, which disintegrated the COSH fibers before the citric acid reaction, further enhanced the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the films up to 123.48 and 5265.41 MPa, respectively. The films decomposed completely in soil, demonstrating an excellent balance between degradability and durability.

Abstract
Camellia oil extracted from the seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel. is a popular and high-quality edible oil, but its yield is limited by seed setting, which is mainly caused by self-incompatibility (SI). One of the obvious biological features of SI plants is the inhibition of self-pollen tubes; however, the underlying mechanism of this inhibition in C. oleifera is poorly understood. In this study, we constructed a semi-in vivo pollen tube growth test (SIV-PGT) system that can screen for substances that inhibit self-pollen tubes without interference from the genetic background. Combined with multi-omics analysis, the results revealed the important role of galloylated catechins in self-pollen tube inhibition, and a possible molecular regulatory network mediated by UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT) and serine carboxypeptidase-like (SCPL) was proposed. In summary, galloylation of catechins and high levels of galloylated catechins are specifically involved in pollen tube inhibition under self-pollination rather than cross-pollination, which provides a new understanding of SI in C. oleifera. These results will contribute to sexual reproduction research on C. oleifera and provide theoretical support for improving Camellia oil yield in production.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Camellia oleifera (C. oleifera) is a woody edible oil crop of great economic importance. Because of the lack of modern biotechnology research, C. oleifera faces huge challenges in both breeding and basic research. The protoplast and transient transformation system plays an important role in biological breeding, plant regeneration and somatic cell fusion. The objective of this present study was to develop a highly efficient protocol for isolating and purifying mesophyll protoplasts and transient transformation of C. oleifera. Several critical factors for mesophyll protoplast isolation from C. oleifera, including starting material (leaf age), pretreatment, enzymatic treatment (type of enzyme, concentration and digestion time), osmotic pressure and purification were optimized. Then the factors affecting the transient transformation rate of mesophyll protoplasts such as PEG molecular weights, PEG4000 concentration, plasmid concentration and incubation time were explored. RESULTS The in vitro grown seedlings of C. oleifera 'Huashuo' were treated in the dark for 24 h, then the 1st to 2nd true leaves were picked and vacuumed at - 0.07 MPa for 20 min. The maximum yield (3.5 × 107/g·FW) and viability (90.9%) of protoplast were reached when the 1st to 2nd true leaves were digested in the enzymatic solution containing1.5% (w/v) Cellulase R-10, 0.5% (w/v) Macerozyme R-10 and 0.25% (w/v) Snailase and 0.4 M mannitol for 10 h. Moreover, the protoplast isolation method was also applicable to the other two cultivars, the protoplast yield for 'TXP14' and 'DP47' was 1.1 × 107/g·FW and 2.6 × 107/g·FW, the protoplast viability for 'TXP14' and 'DP47' was 90.0% and 88.2%. The purification effect was the best when using W buffer as a cleaning agent by centrifugal precipitation. The maximum transfection efficiency (70.6%) was obtained with the incubation of the protoplasts with 15 µg plasmid and 40% PEG4000 for 20 min. CONCLUSION In summary, a simple and efficient system for isolation and transient transformation of C. oleifera mesophyll protoplast is proposed, which is of great significance in various aspects of C. oleifera research, including the study of somatic cell fusion, genome editing, protein function, signal transduction, transcriptional regulation and multi-omics analyses.

Abstract
Camellia oil is an edible health oil with high medicinal value. While phospholipids, peroxides, and free fatty acids are present in unrefined camellia virgin oil (CVO), which has a negative impact on the quality characteristics and storage stability. This paper is to investigate the testing effects of transmembrane pressure and temperature on the membrane flux and degumming (the removal of colloidal substances from crude oil and which is mainly phospholipids) to determine the optimum process parameters for the purification of CVO. On this basis, the effects of purification treatments applied by using a membrane system with membranes of different pore sizes (200, 140, 20, 15, and 10 nm) on CVO were tested. The results indicate that the purification treatments of ceramic membrane on CVO reduced the contents of phospholipids (87.0% reduction), peroxides (29.2% reduction), and free fatty acids (16.2% reduction) at a transmembrane pressure of 0.4 MPa and temperature of 60 °C. At the same time, these treatments did not significantly alter the fatty acid composition. Thus, ceramic membranes have the potential for the purification of camellia oil, which could be an effective way to achieve the purification of camellia oil.

Abstract
Tea-oil tree (Camellia oleifera Abel) is an important woody oil crop with high economic value. However, it has low photosynthetic production considering the low light intensity of its growth environment. To understand the acclimation mechanism of tea-oil trees to low light conditions, three light intensity treatments were conducted: high light (450-500 μmol. m-2. s-1), medium light (180-200 μmol. m-2. s-1), and low light (45-50 μmol. m-2. s-1). The carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) metabolism network were constructed by investigating the leaf anatomy, photosynthetic characteristics, N partitioning, transcriptome and metabolome. Results demonstrated that a larger proportion light energy was used for photochemical reactions in an environment with lower light intensity, which resulted in an increase in photosystem II photochemical efficiency and instantaneous light use efficiency (LUE) at the leaf level. As the light intensity increased, decreased electron transfer and carboxylation efficiencies, photorespiration and dark respiration rates, LUE at plant level, and N use efficiency (PNUE) were observed. Leaves trended to harvest more light using higher expression levels of light-harvesting protein genes, higher chlorophyll content, more granum and more tightly stacked granum lamella under lower light intensity. At transcriptional and metabolic levels, the TCA cycle, and the synthesis of starch and saccharides were weakened as light intensity decreased, while the Calvin cycle did not show the regularity between different treatments. Less N was distributed in Rubisco, respiration, and cell wall proteins as light decreased. Storage N was prominently accumulated in forms of amino acids (especially L-arginine) and amino acid derivatives as under medium and low light environments, to make up for C deficiency. Therefore, tea-oil trees actively improve light-harvesting capacity and enlarges the storage N pool to adapt to a low light environment, at the cost of a decrease of photosynthetic C assimilation and PNUE.

Abstract
The flowers, leaves, seed cakes and fruit shells of Camellia oleifera are rich in bioactive polysaccharides, which can be used as additives in food and other industries. In this study, a Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the extraction conditions of polysaccharides from C. oleifera flowers (P-CF), leaves (P-CL), seed cakes (P-CC), and fruit shells (P-CS). Under the optimized extraction conditions, the polysaccharide yields of the four polysaccharides were 9.32% ± 0.11 (P-CF), 7.57% ± 0.11 (P-CL), 8.69% ± 0.16 (P-CC), and 7.25% ± 0.07 (P-CS), respectively. Polysaccharides were mainly composed of mannose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and xylose, of which the molecular weights ranged from 3.31 kDa to 128.06 kDa. P-CC had a triple helix structure. The antioxidant activities of the four polysaccharides were determined by Fe2+ chelating and free radical scavenging abilities. The results showed that all polysaccharides had antioxidant effects. Among them, P-CF had the strongest antioxidant activity, of which the highest scavenging ability of DPPH•, ABTS•+, and hydroxyl radical could reach 84.19% ± 2.65, 94.8% ± 0.22, and 79.97% ± 3.04, respectively, and the best chelating ability of Fe2+ could reach 44.67% ± 1.04. Overall, polysaccharides extracted from different parts of C. oleifera showed a certain antioxidant effect, and could be developed as a new type of pure natural antioxidant for food.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera shells are abundant in polyphenolic compounds. Green extraction methods of polyphenolic compounds are essential to ensure product quality, efficiency, process cost, environment, and safety. This study investigated the effect of Tween 80 and Rhamnolipid surfactants on the production and utilization of stabilized carbon dioxide nanobubbles (CO2 -NBs). The results confirmed the presence of the CO2 -NBs in ultra-pure water with a concentration of 8.45 ± 1.05 × 108 ml-1 , among which the stable CO2 -NBs possessed a mean size of 40-90 nm and a negative zeta potential (-41.6 ± 1.3 mV). Further, the efficiency of CO2 -NBs combined with ultrasonication (CO2 -NBs-Rh-UAE) was evaluated to extract polyphenols from Camellia oleifera shells (waste). The CO2 -NBs treatment with ultrasonication showed the highest total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) (36.75 ± 0.22 mg GAE/g DW and 24.06 ± 0.22 mg RE/g DW, respectively). Overall, this study demonstrated an innovative approach for producing, stabilizing, and utilizing biosurfactant stabilized CO2 -NBs to extract polyphenolic compounds from the waste agricultural products. These findings highlighted the potential application of biosurfactant-stabilized CO2 -NBs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Explored the molecular science of anther development is important for improving productivity and overall yield of crops. Although the role of regulatory RNAs, including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs), in regulating anther development has been established, their identities and functions in Camellia oleifera, an important industrial crop, have yet not been clearly explored. Here, we report the identification and characterization of genes, lncRNAs and miRNAs during three stages of the tropical C. oleifera anther development by single-molecule real-time sequencing, RNA sequencing and small RNA sequencing, respectively. RESULTS These stages, viz. the pollen mother cells stage, tetrad stage and uninucleate pollen stage, were identified by analyzing paraffin sections of floral buds during rapid expansion periods. A total of 18,393 transcripts, 414 putative lncRNAs and 372 miRNAs were identified, of which 5,324 genes, 115 lncRNAs, and 44 miRNAs were differentially accumulated across three developmental stages. Of these, 44 and 92 genes were predicted be regulated by 37 and 30 differentially accumulated lncRNAs and miRNAs, respectively. Additionally, 42 differentially accumulated lncRNAs were predicted as targets of 27 miRNAs. Gene ontology enrichment indicated that potential target genes of lncRNAs were enriched in photosystem II, regulation of autophagy and carbohydrate phosphatase activity, which are essential for anther development. Functional annotation of genes targeted by miRNAs indicated that they are relevant to transcription and metabolic processes that play important roles in microspore development. An interaction network was built with 2 lncRNAs, 6 miRNAs and 10 mRNAs. Among these, miR396 and miR156 family were up-regulated, while their targets, genes (GROWTH REGULATING FACTORS and SQUAMOSA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE genes) and lncRNAs, were down-regulated. Further, the trans-regulated targets of these lncRNAs, like wall-associated kinase2 and phosphomannose isomerase1, are involved in pollen wall formation during anther development. CONCLUSIONS This study unravels lncRNAs, miRNAs and miRNA-lncRNA-mRNA networks involved in development of anthers of the tropical C. oleifera lays a theoretical foundation for further elucidation of regulatory roles of lncRNAs and miRNAs in anther development.

Abstract
Camellia seed oil, extracted from the seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel., is popular in South China because of its high nutritive value and unique flavor. Nowadays, the traditional extraction methods of hot pressing extraction (HPE) and solvent extraction (SE) are contentious due to low product quality and high environmental impact. Innovative methods such as supercritical fluid extraction (SCFE) and aqueous extraction (AE) are proposed to overcome the pitfalls of the traditional methods. However, they are often limited to the laboratory or pilot scale due to economic or technical bottlenecks. Optimization of extraction processes indicates the challenges in finding the optimal balance between the yield and quality of oils and phytochemicals, as well as the environmental and economic impacts. This article aims to explore recent advances and innovations related to the extraction of oils and phytochemicals from camellia seeds, and it focuses on the pretreatment and extraction processes, as well as their complex effects on nutritional and sensory qualities. We hope this review will help readers to better understand the trends, challenges, and innovations associated with the camellia industry.

Abstract
Camellia oleifera is a woody oil tree species unique to China that has been cultivated and used in China for more than 2,300 years. Most biological research on C. oleifera in recent years has focused on the development of new varieties and breeding. Novel genomic information has been generated for C. oleifera, including a high-quality reference genome at the chromosome level. Camellia seeds are used to process high-quality edible oil; they are also often used in medicine, health foods, and daily chemical products and have shown promise for the treatment and prevention of diseases. C. oleifera by-products, such as camellia seed cake, saponin, and fruit shell are widely used in the daily chemical, dyeing, papermaking, chemical fibre, textile, and pesticide industries. C. oleifera shell can also be used to prepare activated carbon electrodes, which have high electrochemical performance when used as the negative electrode of lithium-ion batteries. C. oleifera is an economically valuable plant with diverse uses, and accelerating the utilization of its by-products will greatly enhance its industrial value.

Abstract
Camellia (Camellia oleifera bel.) seed oil (CO) is extensively used as an edible oil in China and Asian countries owing to its high nutritional and medicinal values. It has been shown that a high-fat diet enhances lipid accumulation and induces intestinal microbiota imbalance in mice. However, it is still to be learned whether CO prevents dyslipidemia through gut microbiota. Here, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis of the gut microbiota, we found that oral CO relieved lipid accumulation and reversed gut microbiota dysbiosis. Compared to mice (C57BL/6J male mice) fed a high-fat diet, treatment with CO regulated the composition and functional profiling communities related to the lipid metabolism of gut microbiota. The abundances of Dubosiella, Lactobacillus, and Alistipes were markedly increased in CO supplementation mice. In addition, the colon levels of isobutyric acid, pentanoic acid, and isovaleric acid were similar between the control and CO supplementation mice. Besides, the results indicated that CO supplementation in mice alleviated lipid droplet accumulation in the hepatocytes and subcutaneous adipose tissue, although the liver index did not show a difference. Notably, CO supplementation for 6 weeks significantly reduced the levels of LDL, TC, and TG, while enhancing the level of HDL in serum and liver. Meanwhile, we also identified that CO supplementation suppressed the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway in high fat-fed (HF-fed) mice. Taken together, our results suggest that CO improved dyslipidemia and alleviated lipid accumulation in HF-fed mice, the molecular mechanisms possibly associated with the reorganization of gut microbiota, in particular, Alistipes and Dubosiella, mediated the inhibition of the mTOR pathway.

Abstract
Seed cake refers to the food by‐product of Camellia oleifera Abel, and its insufficient utilization can cause serious environment pollution and resource waste. This study aimed to investigate antioxidant activities of the polysaccharide from the seed cakes of Camellia oleifera Abel (COCP) in vitro and in vivo. The physicochemical property of COCP was also determined. COCP was characterized to be an acidic glycoprotein and mainly consisted of rhamnose (Rha), arabinose (Ara), galactose (Gal), glucose (Glc), xylose (Xyl), mannose (Man), and galacturonic acid (Gal‐UA). COCP exhibited the polysaccharide's characteristic absorption in the Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy and showed as sheet‐like structures with a smooth surface under the scanning electron microscope (SEM). COCP exerted good scavenging activities on ABTS, DPPH, and OH radicals, with IC50 values of 2.94, 2.24, and 5.09 mg/ml, respectively. COCP treatment improved learning and memory abilities of D‐galactose‐induced aging mice. Significant decreases were found in the levels of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatinine (CRE), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum, as aging mice were supplemented with COCP. Aging mice showed obviously higher malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and lower superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH‐Px) activities in serum, brain, liver, kidney, and heart. The phenomena were noticeably reversed when mice were treated with COCP. Results indicated that COCP exerted excellent antioxidant activities in vitro and in vivo, which support its potential application as a natural antioxidant in food and medicine industries.

Abstract
The potential utilization value of Camellia seed cake was explored by extracting albumin (CSCA) to develop nanoparticles for lutein delivery. First, thermal property and amphiphilicity of CSCA were evaluated to guide nanoparticle preparation. Next, CSCA nanoparticles modified with chitosan (CS) were prepared through a thermally induced self-assembly method derived by electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction. The optimized nanoparticles were prepared from CSCA:CS at a mass ratio of 2:1 with pH of 4.5, and an incubation temperature and time of 80 ℃ and 10 min, respectively. The nanoparticles had the highest effective loading capacity for lutein at 5.89 ± 0.78%, and the corresponding encapsulation efficiency was 43.82 ± 5.69%. The storage stability of lutein was improved by nanoparticle loading, and the bioaccessibility of lutein in simulated intestinal digestion increased from 26.8 ± 4.4% to 57.3 ± 9.6% after encapsulation into nanoparticles. These findings may facilitate the development of new and sustainable proteins from plant waste for delivery system applications.

Abstract
The frying process is an excellent way to obtain food with desirable sensory. However, some harmful substances, such as aldehydes and monoepoxy oleic acids, could also be produced. This study mainly explores the inhibition of polyphenols from the Camellia oleifera seed cake extract (CSCE) on the formation of polar compounds, core aldehydes, and monoepoxy oleic acids during deep-fat frying. The results showed that the CSCE could significantly decrease peroxide, p-anisidine, total polar, and monoepoxy oleic acids compared with other groups. In addition, the CSCE could significantly inhibit the generation of oxidized triacylglycerol polymer (TGP) and oxidized triacylglycerol (ox-TG), indicating its anti-polymerization activity. The total amount of core aldehydes and glycerol ester core aldehydes (9-oxo) in soybean oil was significantly reduced. Furthermore, CSCE had a better inhibitory effect on monoepoxy fatty acids than TBHQ. Our results might be helpful to provide a basis for the search for new natural antioxidants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a perennial crop, oil-Camellia possesses a long domestication history and produces high-quality seed oil that is beneficial to human health. Camellia oleifera Abel. is a sister species to the tea plant, which is extensively cultivated for edible oil production. However, the molecular mechanism of the domestication of oil-Camellia is still limited due to the lack of sufficient genomic information. RESULTS To elucidate the genetic and genomic basis of evolution and domestication, here we report a chromosome-scale reference genome of wild oil-Camellia (2.95 Gb), together with transcriptome sequencing data of 221 cultivars. The oil-Camellia genome, assembled by an integrative approach of multiple sequencing technologies, consists of a large proportion of repetitive elements (76.1%) and high heterozygosity (2.52%). We construct a genetic map of high-density corrected markers by sequencing the controlled-pollination hybrids. Genome-wide association studies reveal a subset of artificially selected genes that are involved in the oil biosynthesis and phytohormone pathways. Particularly, we identify the elite alleles of genes encoding sugar-dependent triacylglycerol lipase 1, β-ketoacyl-acyl carrier protein synthase III, and stearoyl-acyl carrier protein desaturases; these alleles play important roles in enhancing the yield and quality of seed oil during oil-Camellia domestication. CONCLUSIONS We generate a chromosome-scale reference genome for oil-Camellia plants and demonstrate that the artificial selection of elite alleles of genes involved in oil biosynthesis contributes to oil-Camellia domestication.

Abstract
Obesity, which is often caused by adipocyte metabolism dysfunction, is rapidly becoming a serious global health issue. Studies in the literature have shown that camellia oil (Camellia oleifera Abel) exerted potential lipid regulation and other multiple biological activities. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of camellia oil on obese mice induced by a high-fat diet and to explore gut microbiota alterations after camellia oil intervention. The results showed that oral administration of camellia oil dramatically attenuated the fat deposits, serum levels of the total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting plasma glucose, the atherosclerosis index, the hepatic steatosis and inflammation in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Meanwhile, the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level in obese mice was enhanced after the camellia oil treatment. Furthermore, 16S rRNA analysis showed that certain aspects of the gut microbiota, especially the gut microbiota diversity and the relative abundance of Actinobacteria, Coriobacteriaceae, Lactobacillus and Anoxybacillus, were significantly increased by camellia oil treatment while the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes was decreased. Taken together, our finding suggested that camellia oil was a potential dietary supplement and functional food for ameliorating fat deposits, hyperglycemia and fatty liver, probably by modifying the gut microbiota composition.

Abstract
Background/Aim: Camellia oil from Hainan (SY) is a unique vegetable oil in Hainan, China, due to the geographical environment and oil extraction only through simple physical treatments. To compare SY with camellia oil from Guangxi (SC), olive oil (GL), and peanut oil (HS), this study analyzed the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of four vegetable oils. Methods: Using Gallic acid, BHT as the control, Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the model organism, the antioxidant activities of vegetable oils were measured in vitro and in vivo, and the antibacterial activity was measured with the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method. Results: The major contents of SY, SC, and HS were oleic Acid; the major content of GL was squalene. The highest total flavonoids content of SY was 39.50 ± 0.41 mg RE/g DW; and the highest total phenolic content of SC was 47.05 ± 0.72 mg GAE/g DW. SY exhibited the strongest scavenging activity of hydroxyl radical (HO·) and superoxide anions (O2-·), the IC50 value were 2.06 mg/mL, 0.62 mg/mL, respectively; and SC showed the strongest DPPH· and ABTS· scavenging activity and the reducing abilities. SY showed excellent effect on survival rate, protection rate, flavonoids uptake of S. cerevisiae cells, decreased MDA content and ROS level, inhibited CAT, POD, and GR enzyme activity. The absorption of SC total phenols was the highest by cells. The activity showed GL had a broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. Conclusion: Thus, SY shows potential antioxidant activity and provides an important reference value for people to choose edible vegetable oils.
