Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the preventive effects of the total polyphenols from Nymphaea candida (NCTP) on LPS-induced septic acute lung injury (ALI) in mice and its mechanisms. NCTP could significantly ameliorate LPS-induced lung tissue pathological injury in mice as well as lung wet/dry ratio and MPO activities (p < 0.05). NCTP could significantly decrease the blood leukocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, basophil, and eosinophil amounts and LPS contents in ALI mice compared with the model group (p < 0.05), improving lymphocyte amounts (p < 0.05). Moreover, compared with the model group, NCTP could decrease lung tissue TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β levels (p < 0.05) and downregulate the protein expression of TLR4, MyD88, TRAF6, IKKβ, IκB-α, p-IκB-α, NF-κB p65, p-NF-κB p65, NLRP3, ASC, and Caspase1 in lung tissues (p < 0.05). Furthermore, NCTP could inhibit ileum histopathological injuries, restoring the ileum tight junctions by increasing the expression of ZO-1 and occludin. Simultaneously, NCTP could reverse the gut microbiota disorder, restore the diversity of gut microbiota, increase the relative abundance of Clostridiales and Lachnospiraceae, and enhance the content of SCFAs (acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid) in feces. These results suggested that NCTP has preventive effects on septic ALI, and its mechanism is related to the regulation of gut microbiota, SCFA metabolism, and the TLR-4/NF-κB and NLRP3 pathways.

Abstract
Fermented foods have shown promise in preventing or treating ulcerative colitis (UC) via regulating intestinal flora and correcting metabolic disorders. However, the prevention effect of fermented Wallace melon juice (FMJ) on UC is unclear. In this study, the effects of FMJ on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced UC were investigated via 16S rRNA sequencing and non-targeted metabolomics. The results showed that FMJ was effective in alleviating the symptoms of UC, reducing histological damage and oxidative stress, decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. After FMJ treatment, the level of propionic acid, butyric acid, and valeric acid increased by 14.1%, 44.4%, and 52.4% compared to DSS-induced UC mice. Meanwhile, the levels of harmful bacteria such as Oscillospira, Bacteroidetes, and Erysipelotrichaceae and Clostridium decreased, while the levels of beneficial bacteria such as Akkermansia, Lactobacillus, and Bifidobacterium increased. Fecal metabolomics analysis identified 31 differential metabolites, which could regulate metabolic disorders in UC mice by controlling the primary bile acid biosynthesis, purine metabolism, and pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis pathway. Additionally, the abundances of butyric acid, bile acids, and pantothenic acid were positively correlated with Allobaculum, Bifidobacterium, and other beneficial bacteria (R2 > 0.80, p < 0.01). The results indicated that FMJ played a role in regulating the structure of intestinal flora, which in turn helped in repairing metabolic disorders and alleviated colitis inflammation.

Abstract
Premature ovarian failure (POF) is a leading cause of women's infertility without effective treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of Luffa cylindrica fermentation liquid (LF) on cyclophosphamide (CTX) -induced POF in mice and to preliminarily investigate the underlying mechanisms. Thirty-two Balb/c mice were divided into four groups randomly. One group served as the control, while the other three received CTX injections to establish POF models. A 14-day gavage of either 5 or 10 μL/g LF was administered to two LF pretreatment groups. To analyze the effects of LF, the ovarian index, follicle number, the levels of serum sex hormones, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), inflammatory factors, and apoptosis of the ovarian cells were measured. The effects of LF pretreatment on the expression of TLR4/NF-κB and apoptosis pathways were also evaluated. We found that LF pretreatment increased the ovarian index and the number of primordial and antral follicles while decreasing those of atretic follicles. LF pretreatment also increased the serum levels of estradiol (E2) and anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), while decreasing those of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Furthermore, LF pretreatment increased the levels of SOD and GSH in the ovaries, while decreasing those of MDA, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β). LF administration reduced the amount of TUNEL+ ovarian cells and the levels of TLR4 and NF-κB P65 protein expression. In conclusion, LF has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory as well as anti-apoptotic effects against CTX-induced POF, and the inhibition of TLR4/NF-κB and apoptosis pathways may be involved in its mechanisms.

Abstract
Chinese dwarf cherry (Cerasus humilis) is a wild fruit tree and medicinal plant endemic to China. Its fruits are rich in various bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids and carotenoids, which contribute greatly to their high antioxidant capacity. In this study, the contents of bioactive substances (chlorophyll, carotenoids, ascorbic acid, anthocyanin, total flavonoids, and total phenols), antioxidant capacities, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonicacid) (ABTS+) scavenging ability, and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)) in differentially pigmented C. humilis fruits of four varieties were determined and compared. The results revealed that anthocyanin, total flavonoids and total phenols were the three main components responsible for the antioxidant activity of C. humilis fruits. 'Jinou No.1' fruits with dark red peel and red flesh had the highest contents of anthocyanin, total flavonoids, and total phenols, as well as the highest antioxidant capacities; 'Nongda No.5' fruits with yellow-green peel and yellow flesh had the highest contents of carotenoids and chlorophyll, while 'Nongda No.6' fruit had the highest ascorbic acid content. To further reveal the molecular mechanism underlying differences in the accumulation of carotenoids and flavonoids among differentially pigmented C. humilis fruits, the expression patterns of structural genes involved in the biosynthesis of the two compounds were investigated. Correlation analysis results revealed that the content of carotenoids in C. humilis fruits was very significantly positively correlated with the expression of the ChCHYB, ChZEP, ChVDE, ChNSY, ChCCD1, ChCCD4, ChNCED1, and ChNCED5 genes (p < 0.01) and significantly negatively correlated with the expression of ChZDS (p < 0.05). The anthocyanin content was very significantly positively correlated with ChCHS, ChFLS, and ChUFGT expression (p < 0.01). The total flavonoid content was very significantly positively correlated with the expression of ChCHS, ChUFGT, and ChC4H (p < 0.01) and significantly positively correlated with ChFLS expression (p < 0.05). This study can provide a basis for understanding the differences in the accumulation of bioactive substances, and is helpful for clarifying the mechanisms underlying the accumulation of various carotenoids and flavonoids among differentially pigmented C. humilis fruits.

Abstract
Fibre-based dietary interventions are at the forefront of gut microbiome modulation research, with a wealth of 16S rRNA information to demonstrate the prebiotic effects of isolated fibres. However, there is a distinct lack of data relating to the effect of a combination of soluble and insoluble fibres in a convenient-to-consume fruit juice food matrix on gut microbiota structure, diversity, and function. Here, we aimed to determine the impact of the MOJU Prebiotic Shot, an apple, lemon, ginger, and raspberry fruit juice drink blend containing chicory inulin, baobab, golden kiwi, and green banana powders, on gut microbiota structure and function. Healthy adults (n = 20) were included in a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study, receiving 60 mL MOJU Prebiotic Shot or placebo (without the fibre mix) for 3 weeks with a 3-week washout period between interventions. Shotgun metagenomics revealed significant between-group differences in alpha and beta diversity. In addition, the relative abundance of the phyla Actinobacteria and Desulfobacteria was significantly increased as a result of the prebiotic intervention. Nine species were observed to be differentially abundant (uncorrected p-value of <0.05) as a result of the prebiotic treatment. Of these, Bifidobacterium adolescentis and CAG-81 sp900066785 (Lachnospiraceae) were present at increased abundance relative to baseline. Additionally, KEGG analysis showed an increased abundance in pathways associated with arginine biosynthesis and phenylacetate degradation during the prebiotic treatment. Our results show the effects of the daily consumption of 60 mL MOJU Prebiotic Shot for 3 weeks and provide insight into the functional potential of B. adolescentis.

Abstract
In the human body, the positive effects of phenolic compounds are increasingly observed through their presence in tissues and organs in their native form or in the form of metabolites or catabolites formed during digestion, microbial metabolism, and host biotransformation. The full extent of these effects is still unclear. The aim of this paper is to review the current knowledge of beneficial effects of native phenolic compounds or their metabolites and catabolites focusing on their role in the health of the digestive system, including disorders of the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts and liver. Studies are mostly connecting beneficial effects in the gastrointestinal and urinary tract to the whole food rich in phenolics, or to the amount of phenolic compounds/antioxidants in food. Indeed, the bioactivity of parent phenolic compounds should not be ignored due to their presence in the digestive tract, and the impact on the gut microbiota. However, the influence of their metabolites and catabolites might be more important for the liver and urinary tract. Distinguishing between the effects of parent phenolics vs metabolites and catabolites at the site of action are important for novel areas of food industry, nutrition and medicine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia is regarded as a public health matter, and its effective prevention and treatment are urgently required. However, the treatment of hyperlipidemia is still relatively scarce. RESULTS Fermented Cerasus humilis fruit (FCHF) had higher total flavonoid, total phenolic, procyanidin, and organic and free amino acid content, and lower total sugar content, than non-fermented C. humilis fruit (NFCHF). Both FCHF and NFCHF treatment significantly prevent putting on weight. Furthermore, FCHF administration ameliorated hyperlipidemia and cholesterol over-accumulation. In addition, FCHF administration activated the antioxidase system and decreased the malondialdehyde content to relieve oxidative stress, and showed more efficaciously than NFCHF administration. FCHF treatments significantly reverse the fat deposition in high-fat diet rat liver. FCHF supplementation can relieve the dysbacteriosis induced by hyperlipidemia, and regulate the composition of rat gut microbiota by increasing the abundance of Prevotella and norank_f_Muribaculaceae. CONCLUSION Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation enhanced the antihyperlipidemic property of C. humilis fruits by promoting gut microbiota regulation. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Indigo and indirubin, the active molecules of traditional Chinese medicine indigo naturalis, exert therapeutic activity for ulcerative colitis (UC). Indigo and indirubin are isomers and have distinctive profiles in anti-inflammation, immune regulation, intestinal microbiota regulation, oxidative stress regulation, and intestinal mucosal repair for UC treatment. Thus, exploring its combined administration's integrated advantages for UC is critical. This study is aimed at clarifying the effect and mechanisms of the combined administration of indigo and indirubin on colitis mouse models. The results showed that all the treatment groups could improve the disease symptoms, and the combined administration showed the best effect. Additionally, compared with indigo and indirubin alone, the combination group could significantly reinforce intestinal barrier function by increasing the expression of E-cadherin, occludin, ZO-1, and MUC2 and improving intestinal permeability. The treatment groups significantly improved the expression of cytokines, including TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12, IL-23, and IL-17A, and indirubin presented the most potent anti-inflammatory effect. Furthermore, all the treatment groups reduced the infiltration of the immune cells in intestinal lamina propria and the production of ROS/RNS. Notably, indigo exhibited a more substantial capacity to regulate natural killer (NK) cells, ILC3, neutrophils, and dendritic cells, followed by the combination group and indirubin alone. Finally, all the treatment groups modulated intestinal microbiota composition, increased the proportion of beneficial microbiota, and decreased the proportion of microbiota. Our results indicated that indigo and indirubin synergistically reinforced the intestinal barrier function, which may be associated with integrating the indirubin anti-inflammatory and intestinal microbiota regulating strength and indigo immune and ROS/RNS regulation advantage.

Abstract
The current study focused on the effects of Shenling Baizhu San (SLBZS) fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) on gut microbiota, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal barrier function of yellow-plumed broilers. Our results showed that the content of ginsenoside Rb1 was the highest when SLBZS were inoculated with 3% L. plantarum and fermented at 28°C for 24 h. One-day-old male broilers were divided into five treatment groups. Treatment consisted of a basal diet as a control (Con), 0.1% unfermented SLBZS (U-SLBZS), 0.05% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-L), 0.1% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-M), and 0.2% fermented SLBZS (F-SLBZS-H). On days 14, 28, and 42, six chickens from each group were randomly selected for blood collection and tissue sampling. The results showed that the addition of 0.1% fermented SLBZS could significantly increase average daily feed intake (ADFI) and average daily gain (ADG), and decrease feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broilers. The addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS significantly increased the lymphoid organ index of broilers on day 28 and 42. The addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS could improve the antioxidant capacity of broilers. Moreover, the addition of 0.1 and 0.2% fermented SLBZS could significantly increase the villus height/crypt depth of the ileum, and significantly increase the expression of tight junction. In addition, fermentation of SLBZS increase the abundance of Coprococcus, Bifidobacterium and Bilophila in the gut of broilers. These results indicate that the supplementation of fermented SLBZS in the diet could improve the growth performance, lymphoid organ index, antioxidant capacity, and positively affect the intestinal health of broilers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polysaccharides and probiotics can play an outstanding role in the treatment of liver disease by regulating gut microbiota. Recently, the combined therapeutic effect of probiotics and polysaccharides has attracted the attention of researchers. Houttuynia cordata polysaccharide (HCP) combined with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum P101 was used to prevent carbon tetrachloride (CCl4 )-induced acute liver injury (ALI) in mice, and its effect on gut microbiota regulation was explored. RESULTS Results showed that, in mice, HCP combined with L. plantarum P101 significantly alleviated oxidative stress and inflammatory injury in the liver by activating Nrf2 signals and inhibiting NF-κB signals. The analysis of gut microbiota revealed that the combination of HCP and L. plantarum P101 increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Alloprevotella, Roseburia, and Akkermansia, but reduced that of the pro-inflammatory bacteria Alistipes, Enterorhabdus, Anaerotruncus, and Escherichia-Shigella. Correlation analysis also indicated that the expression of Nrf2 and TLR4/NF-κB was connected to the changes in gut microbiota composition. Houttuynia cordata polysaccharide combined with L. plantarum P101 can regulate the gut microbiota and then mediate the gut-liver axis to activate the antioxidant pathway and inhibit inflammatory responses, thereby alleviating CCl4 -induced ALI. CONCLUSION Our study provided a new perspective on the use of polysaccharides combined with probiotics in the treatment of liver disease. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Pruni Semen, the seed of several unique Prunus plants, is a traditional purgative herbal material. To determine the authentic sources of Pruni Semen, 46 samples from four species were collected and analyzed. Ten compounds including multiflorin A (Mul A), a notable purative compound, were isolated and identified by chemical separation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Seventy-six communal components were identified by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with linear ion trap-quadrupole Orbitrap mass spectrometry, and acetyl flavonoid glycosides were recognized as characteristic constituents. The flavonoids were distributed in the seed coat and cyanogenic glycosides in the kernel. Based on this, methods for identifying Pruni Semen from different sources were established using chemical fingerprinting, quantitative analysis of the eight principal compounds, hierarchical cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis. The results showed that the samples were divided into two categories: one is the small seeds from Prunus humilis (Ph) and Prunus japonica (Pj), and the other is the big seeds from Prunus pedunculata (Pp) and Prunus triloba (Pt). The average content of Mul A was 3.02, 6.93, 0.40, and 0.29 mg/g, while the average content of amygdalin was 18.5, 17.7, 31.5, and 30.9 mg/g in Ph, Pj, Pp, and Pt, respectively. All the above information suggests that small seeds might be superior sources of Pruni Semen. This is the first comprehensive report on the identification of chemical components in Pruni Semen from different species. Chemical constituents of Pruni semen from four Prunus species were compared. Acetyl flavonoid glycosides were identified as the characteristic components. Flavonoids were present in the seed coat and cyanogenic glycosides in the kernel. The content of acetyl flavonoid in small seeds is significant higher than those in big ones.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a modern, refractory disease, and studies have shown that UC is closely associated with the gut microbiota and intestinal immune barrier. This study evaluated the protective effects and regulatory mechanism of Chinese dwarf cherry [Cerasus humilis (Bge.) Sok.] fermentation juice (CFJ) on UC induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS). The results indicated that CFJ could significantly modulate the oxidative stress index in the serum and colon, observably reduce MPO and NO activity, and increase the SOD level. CFJ significantly downregulated the levels of TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 and reduced inflammation caused by DSS. SIgA and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels were effectively improved in the CFJ group, especially the acetic acid and butyric acid levels. Intestinal flora analysis showed that DSS could enrich harmful bacteria such as Alistipes and Oribacterium and that CFJ could increase the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Parasutterella, Bacteroides, Roseburia and Blautia). SIgA in the colon was positively correlated with Lachnoclostridium, Blautia, Lachnospiraceae_UCG-004, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group and other beneficial bacteria. The results showed that DSS group rats had immunity and signalling pathway disorders and that CFJ could regulate immune disorders, mainly by regulating the expression of IgA pathway components. Taken together, our results demonstrated that CFJ could regulate changes in the gut microbiota, improve the expression of immune protein-related genes, further regulate intestinal mucosal immune function and maintain intestinal mucosal barrier homeostasis.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of polysaccharides derived from Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis on growth performance, intestinal health, and gut microbiota composition in broilers. A total of 480 one-day-old male Arbor Acres broilers were randomly divided into 4 treatments with 6 replicates comprising 20 broilers each. Treatments included: basal diet without antibiotics (CON); basal diet supplemented with 500 mg/kg terramycin calcium (ANT); basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharides (APS); and basal diet supplemented with 150 mg/kg Glycyrrhiza uralensis polysaccharides (GPS). The results showed that ANT, AP,S and GPS supplementation significantly increased average daily gain (ADG) and decreased feed conversion ratio (FCR) of broilers from 1 to 42 d of age. At 42 d, serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels of the APS and GPS group were notably higher than those of the CON group, while serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) as well as diamine oxidase (DAO) activity in the APS and GPS group were obviously decreased. Moreover, diets supplemented with APS and GPS could significantly increase villus height (VH) and the ratio of villus height to crypt depth (VH/CD) and remarkably upregulated occludin, claudin-1 and mucin-2 (MUC2) mRNA expression in duodenum, jejunum, and ileum of broilers. In addition, 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that APS and GPS supplementation altered cecal microbial diversity and composition in broilers. Higher Shannon index was observed in the APS and GPS group compared with the CON group, while GPS supplementation could also increase Chao1 index and Observed species. The result of Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that microbial community in the CON, ANT, APS, and GPS group clustered separately. Notably, both APS and GPS supplementation significantly decreased the abundance of Bacteroidetes, Bacteroides, Faecalibacterium, Desulfovibrio, and Butyricicoccus, while increased the abundance of Firmicutes, Prevotella, Parabacteroides, Ruminococcus, and Alistipes. The correlation analysis showed that the changes in cecal microbial composition induced by dietary APS and GPS supplementation were closely associated with the alteration of the phenotype of broilers including ADG, FCR, TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IgA, IgG, DAO, Occludin, Claudin-1, ZO-1, and MUC2. In conclusion, polysaccharides derived from Astragalus membranaceus and Glycyrrhiza uralensis could improve growth performance of broilers by enhancing intestinal health and modulating gut microbiota.

Abstract
The effects of Masson pine (Pinus massoniana Lamb.) needle extract (PNE) on gastrointestinal disorders and oxidative stress have been widely investigated using experimental models; however, the functions and mechanisms of these effects in chicken models remain unknown. We investigated the effects of Masson PNE supplementation on performance, egg quality, serum parameters, and the gut microbiome in laying hens. A total of 60 healthy 50-week-old Peking Pink laying hens with similar body conditions and egg production were randomly divided into the control (CON) (0 mg/kg PNE), PNE100 (100 mg/kg PNE), PNE200 (200 mg/kg PNE), and PNE400 (400 mg/kg PNE) groups, with fifteen replicates per treatment and one hen per replicate. Compared with the CON group, egg mass, feed conversion ratios, and yolk weight were significantly increased (p < 0.01) in the PNE100 group. Dietary supplementation of 100 mg/kg PNE increased the serum total protein, albumin, and glucose concentrations (p < 0.01) and decreased the alanine aminotransferase activity (p < 0.05) compared with those of the CONs. Hens in the PNE100 group had reduced serum malondialdehyde levels (p < 0.05) and increased catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase activities (p < 0.01) compared with those of the CON group. Serum proinflammatory cytokine concentrations of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor-α were lower (p < 0.01) and the IL-10 level was higher (p < 0.01) in the PNE100 group than in the CON group. Serum immunoglobulin (Ig)A, IgG, and IgM concentrations were increased in the PNE100 group (p < 0.01). The relative abundance of Bacteroidetes was increased, while the relative abundances of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were decreased in the PNE100 group. The relative abundances of Vibrio, Shewanella, and Lactobacillus were decreased, while the relative abundances of unclassified_o_Bacteroidales, Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, unclassified_f_Rikenellaceae, and Butyricicoccaceae were increased in the PNE100 group compared with those of the CON group. PNE supplementation at 100 mg/kg improved the diversity and structure of the gut microbial composition, production performance, egg quality, and serum parameters of laying hens. The laying hens in this study had good production performance when supplemented with 100 mg/kg PNE.

Abstract
The study aimed to explore the effects of fortified fermented rice-acid on the antioxidant capacity of mouse serum and the gut microbiota. Hair characteristics, body mass index, intestinal villus height, intestinal crypt depth, serum antioxidant capacity, and gut microbiota of mice were first measured and the correlation between the antioxidant capacity of mouse serum and the gut microbiota was then explored. The mice in the lactic acid bacteria group (L-group), the mixed bacteria group (LY-group), and the rice soup group (R-group) kept their weight well and had better digestion. The mice in the L-group had the better hair quality (dense), but the hair quality in the R-group and the yeast group (Y-group) was relatively poor (sparse). In addition, the inoculation of Lactobacillus paracasei H4-11 (L. paracasei H4-11) and Kluyveromyces marxianus L1-1 (K. marxianus L1-1) increased the villus height/crypt depth of the mice (3.043 ± 0.406) compared to the non-inoculation group (R-group) (2.258 ± 0.248). The inoculation of L. paracasei H4-11 and K. marxianus L1-1 in fermented rice-acid enhanced the blood antioxidant capacity of mouse serum (glutathione 29.503 ± 6.604 umol/L, malonaldehyde 0.687 ± 0.125 mmol/L, catalase 15.644 ± 4.618 U/mL, superoxide dismutase 2.292 ± 0.201 U/mL). In the gut microbiota of L-group and LY-group, beneficial microorganisms (Lactobacillus and Blautia) increased, but harmful microorganisms (Candidatus Arthromitus and Erysipelotrichales) decreased. L. paracasei H4-11 and K. marxianus L1-1 might have a certain synergistic effect on the improvement in antibacterial function since they reduced harmful microorganisms in the gut microbiota of mice. The study provides the basis for the development of fortified fermented rice-acid products for regulating the gut microbiota and improving the antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
The intestinal flora is recognized as a significant contributor to the immune system. In this research, the protective effects of oyster peptides on immune regulation and intestinal microbiota were investigated in mice treated with cyclophosphamide. The results showed that oyster peptides restored the indexes of thymus, spleen and liver, stimulated cytokines secretion and promoted the relative mRNA levels of Th1/Th2 cytokines (IL-2, IFN-γ, IL-4 and IL-10). The mRNA levels of Occludin, Claudin-1, ZO-1, and Mucin-2 were up-regulated, and the NF-κB signaling pathway was also activated after oyster peptides administration. Furthermore, oyster peptides treatment reduced the proportion of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes, increased the relative abundance of Alistipes, Lactobacillus, Rikenell and the content of short-chain fatty acids, and reversed the composition of intestinal microflora similar to that of normal mice. In conclusion, oyster peptides effectively ameliorated cyclophosphamide-induced intestinal damage and modified gut microbiota structure in mice, and might be utilized as a beneficial ingredient in functional foods for immune regulation.
