Head Impact Location, Speed and Angle from Falls and Trips in the Workplace

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common injury in the workplace. Trips and falls are the leading causes of TBI in the workplace. However, industrial safety helmets are not designed for protecting the head under these impact conditions. Instead, they are designed to pass the regulatory standards which test head protection against falling heavy and sharp objects. This is likely to be due to the limited understanding of head impact conditions from trips and falls in workplace. In this study, we used validated human multi-body models to predict the head impact location, speed and angle (measured from the ground) during trips, forward falls and backward falls. We studied the effects of worker size, initial posture, walking speed, width and height of the tripping barrier, bracing and falling height on the head impact conditions. Overall, we performed 1692 simulations. The head impact speed was over two folds larger in falls than trips, with backward falls producing highest impact speeds. However, the trips produced impacts with smaller impact angles to the ground. Increasing the walking speed increased the head impact speed but bracing reduced it. We found that 41% of backward falls and 19% of trips/forward falls produced head impacts located outside the region of helmet coverage. Next, we grouped all the data into three sub-groups based on the head impact angle: [0°, 30°], (30°, 60°] and (60°, 90°] and excluded groups with small number of cases. We found that most trips and forward falls lead to impact angles within the (30°, 60°] and (60°, 90°] groups while all backward falls produced impact angles within (60°, 90°] group. We therefore determined five representative head impact conditions from these groups by selecting the 75th percentile speed, mean value of angle intervals and median impact location (determined by elevation and azimuth angles) of each group. This led to two representative head impact conditions for trips: 2.7 m/s at 45° and 3.9 m/s at 75°, two for forward falls: 3.8 m/s at 45° and 5.5 m/s at 75° and one for backward falls: 9.4 m/s at 75°. These impact conditions can be used to improve industrial helmet standards.

Cerebral hemorrhage caused by shaking adult syndrome? Evidence from biomechanical analysis using 3D motion capture and finite element models

The present study combined three-dimensional (3D) motion capture with finite element simulation to reconstruct a real shaking adult syndrome (SAS) case and further explore the injury biomechanics of SAS. The frequency at which an adult male can shake the head of another person, head-shaking amplitude, and displacement curves was captured by the VICON 3D motion capture system. The captured shaking frequency and shaking curve were loaded on the total human model for safety (THUMS) head to simulate the biomechanical response of brain injury when a head was shaken in anterior-posterior, left-right, and left anterior-right posterior directions at frequencies of 4 Hz (Hz), 5 Hz, 6 Hz, and 7 Hz. The biomechanical response of the head on impact in the anterior, posterior, left, left anterior, and right posterior directions at the equivalent velocity of 6 Hz shaking was simulated. The violent shaking frequency of the adult male was 3.2-6.8 Hz; head shaking at these frequencies could result in serious cerebral injuries. SAS-related injuries have obvious directionality, and sagittal shaking can easily cause brain injuries. There was no significant difference between the brain injuries caused by shaking in the simulated frequency range (4-7 Hz). Impact and shaking at an equivalent velocity could cause brain injuries, though SAS more commonly occurred due to the cumulative deformation of brain tissue. Biomechanical studies of SAS should play a positive role in improving the accuracy of forensic identification and reducing this form of abuse and torture in detention or places of imprisonment.

Reconstruction of a real-world car-to-pedestrian collision using geomatics techniques and numerical simulations

The aim of this study is to provide an improved method for traffic accident reconstruction based on geomatics techniques and numerical simulations. A combination of various techniques was used. First, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), laser scanner and structured-light scanner were used to obtain information on the accident scene, vehicle and victim. The collected traces provided detailed initial impact conditions for subsequent numerical simulations. Then, multi-body system (MBS) simulations were conducted to reconstruct the kinematics of the car-to-pedestrian collision. Finally, a finite element (FE) simulation using the THUMS model was performed to predict injuries. A real-life vehicle-pedestrian collision was used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of this method. The reconstruction result revealed that the kinematic and injury predictions of the numerical simulations effectively conformed to the surveillance video and investigation of the actual accident. UAV photogrammetry was demonstrated to be more efficient in accident data collection than hand sketch and measurement, and 3D laser scanning enabled an easier and more accurate modeling process of vehicle. The present study shows the feasibility of this method for use in traffic accident reconstruction.

Characteristics of human movement and injury in a side collision between the front of a small car and a bicycle

OBJECTIVE

Our research groups have studied the movement and injury characteristics of the human body in a side collision between the front of a small car and a pedestrian. This study discusses the movement and injury characteristics of the human body in a side collision between the front of a small car and bicycle.

METHODS

A total of 31 cases of traffic accidents caused by small car collisions when riding a bicycle across a road were collected. Through on-site inspection and trace inspection of the accident vehicles and bicycles, the speed of the car during the collision was calculated, the collision relationship between the small car and bicycle was determined, and the injury site and degree were determined through autopsy. The car speed was divided into two groups: <60 km/h and >60 km/h. Injuries of the skull, cervical spine, ribs, pelvis, femur and tibiofibular were analysed, and the correlations with the height of the bicycle controller, the height of the bicycle seat, the height of the car hood and the length of hood were discussed. PC-Crash was used for simulation analysis to further clarify the injury process.

RESULTS

The ratio of the height of the bicycle seat to the height of the hood plus the length of the hood in the windshield-damaged group was larger than that in the undamaged windshield group (P < 0.05). No cervical fracture was found when V < 60 km/h, and 52.94% of cases had cervical fracture when V > 60 km/h. The ratio of the height of the bicycle seat to the height of the hood in the pelvic fracture group was smaller than that in the nonpelvic fracture group (P < 0.05). The incidence of tibiofibular fracture was less than 65%.

CONCLUSIONS

When a side impact between a car front and a bicycle occurs, the resulting human injury is related not only to the speed but also to the height of the bicycle seat and the height and length of the hood of the car. The incidence of tibiofibular fractures was significantly lower than that of small car front-pedestrian side impacts.

Current state and progress of research on forensic biomechanics in China

Forensic biomechanics gradually has become a significant component of forensic science. Forensic biomechanics is evidence-based science that applies biomechanical principles and methods to forensic practice, which has constituted one of the most potential research areas. In this review, we introduce how finite element techniques can be used to simulate forensic cases, how injury criteria and injury scales can be used to describe injury severity, and how tests of postmortem human subjects and dummy can be used to provide essential validation data. This review also describes research progress and new applications of forensic biomechanics in China.Key pointsThe review shows the main research progress and new applications of forensic biomechanics in China.The review introduces eight cases about the application of forensic biomechanics, including the multiple rigid body reconstruction, the finite element applications, study of mechanical properties, traffic crash reconstruction based on multiple techniques and analysis of morphomechanical mechanism about blood dispersal.Though forensic biomechanics has a great advantage for the evaluation of injury mechanisms, it still has some uncertainties owing to the uniqueness of the human anatomy, the complexity of biological materials, and the uncertainty of injury-causing circumstances.

Tools and Biomechanical Modeling Use in Legal Disputes: Some Case Studies

The paper presents some of the biomechanical tools available for the forensic bioengineering expert. The tools range from the simple three-dimensional modeling environment to represent the geometries up to the analytical models based on the free-body diagram and the multibody numerical models of rigid bodies. Through these tools the forensic bioengineering expert is able to solve complex problems by providing quantitative results based on a scientific approach. In this work three case studies, representing real cases that were treated in court, are presented. They relate to accidents which occurred in different contexts. The first relates to an accident in a filament factory where a worker remained with her body stuck in the production line, the second the hit of a pedestrian, and the last concerning a worker who fell from a wall on a construction site. It is shown that the approach to modeling may not always be necessarily complex. It was possible to solve the first case with a simple three-dimensional geometric model that clearly highlighted the development of the facts. In the second case it was possible to set up a simple analytical model based on a free body diagram to search for the relationship between the forces developed on the invested leg, demonstrating the relationship between the accident and the injuries reported. The third case, with the need for more complex modeling, was instead treated with a kinematic and dynamic multibody model which allowed the dynamics of the accident to be traced, starting from the final position in which the victim was found. In each case, the competence of the forensic bioengineering expert was crucial in identifying the correct modeling for the case in question, with the choice of the right data, in order to arrive at reliable quantitative results.
