Synthesis and properties of organosoluble polyimides based on novel perfluorinated monomer hexafluoro-2,4-toluenediamine

Synthesis, Characterization, and Environmental Applications of Novel Per-Fluorinated Organic Polymers with Azo- and Azomethine-Based Linkers via Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution

This study reports on the synthesis and characterization of novel perfluorinated organic polymers with azo- and azomethine-based linkers using nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The polymers were synthesized via the incorporation of decafluorobiphenyl and hexafluorobenzene linkers with diphenols in the basic medium. The variation in the linkers allowed the synthesis of polymers with different fluorine and nitrogen contents. The rich fluorine polymers were slightly soluble in THF and have shown molecular weights ranging from 4886 to 11,948 g/mol. All polymers exhibit thermal stability in the range of 350-500 °C, which can be attributed to their structural geometry, elemental contents, branching, and cross-linking. For instance, the cross-linked polymers with high nitrogen content, DAB-Z-1h and DAB-Z-1O, are more stable than azomethine-based polymers. The cross-linking was characterized by porosity measurements. The azo-based polymer exhibited the highest surface area of 770 m2/g with a pore volume of 0.35 cm3/g, while the open-chain azomethine-based polymer revealed the lowest surface area of 285 m2/g with a pore volume of 0.0872 cm3/g. Porous structures with varied hydrophobicities were investigated as adsorbents for separating water-benzene and water-phenol mixtures and selectively binding methane/carbon dioxide gases from the air. The most hydrophobic polymers containing the decafluorbiphenyl linker were suitable for benzene separation, while the best methane uptake values were 6.14 and 3.46 mg/g for DAB-Z-1O and DAB-A-1O, respectively. On the other hand, DAB-Z-1h, with the highest surface area and being rich in nitrogen sites, has recorded the highest CO2 uptake at 298 K (17.25 mg/g).

Effect of Direct Fluorination on the Transport Properties and Swelling of Polymeric Materials: A Review

Fluorine-containing polymers occupy a peculiar niche among conventional polymers due to the unique combination of physicochemical properties. Direct surface fluorination of the polymeric materials is one of the approaches for the introduction of fluorine into the chemical structure that allows one to implement advantages of fluorinated polymers in a thin layer. Current review considers the influence of the surface interaction of the polymeric materials and membranes with elemental fluorine on gas, vapor and liquid transport as well as swelling and related phenomena. The increase in direct fluorination duration and concentration of fluorine in the fluorination mixture is shown to result mostly in a reduction of all penetrants permeability to a different extent, whereas selectivity of the selected gas pairs (He-H₂, H₂-CH₄, He-CH₄, CO₂-CH₄, O₂-N₂, etc.) increases. Separation parameters for the treated polymeric films approach Robeson's upper bounds or overcome them. The most promising results were obtained for highly permeable polymer, polytrimethylsilylpropyne (PTMSP). The surface fluorination of rubbers in printing equipment leads to an improved chemical resistance of the materials towards organic solvents, moisturizing solutions and reduce diffusion of plasticizers, photosensitizers and other components of the polymeric blends. The direct fluorination technique can be also considered one of the approaches of fabrication of fuel cell membranes from non-fluorinated polymeric precursors that improves their methanol permeability, proton conductivity and oxidative stability.

Synthesis and characterization of organosoluble, transparent, and hydrophobic fluorinated polyimides derived from 3,3′-diisopropyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl-4′′-trifluoromethyltoluene

A novel aromatic fluorinated diamine monomer, 3,3′-diisopropyl-4,4′-diaminodiphenyl-4′′-trifluoromethyltoluene, was synthesized by coupling of 2-isopropylaniline and 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzaldehyde and its structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, elemental analysis, and mass spectrometry, and then used to prepare a series of fluorinated polyimides (FPIs) by polycondensation reaction with various commercial dianhydrides via conventional one-step method. The obtained FPIs present excellent solubility in most organic solvents and enough to cast into tough and flexible films. All the FPI films show good optical transparency and light color with the cutoff wavelengths in range of 307–362 nm and the average transmittance above 86%. These polymer films also exhibit high glass transition temperature in range of 261–331°C and thermal stability with 10% weigh loss above 463°C under nitrogen atmosphere. Furthermore, they exhibit outstanding mechanical properties with tensile strengths of 65.9–94.3 MPa, elongation at break of 11.4–13.8%, Young’s modulus of 1.6–1.9 GPa, and low dielectric constants in range of 2.75–3.10 at 1 MHz as well as prominent hydrophobicity with the contact angle in the range of 87.3–93.9°.

Synthesis and characterization of ternary copolyimides derived from aromatic dianhydride and aromatic diisocyanates

A series of polyimide (PI) copolymers were synthesized via a one-step polycondensation procedure from benzophenone-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and 4,4′-methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI) with various mole ratios of TDI and MDI ranging from 70:30 to 100:0. The inherent viscosities of the resulting PIs were in the range of 0.51–0.80 dL g−1. The prepared PIs showed good solubility in common organic as well as in less polar solvents. All copolymers afforded tough and flexible films that had good thermal stability with glass transition temperature of 308–325°C and the temperatures of 5% weight loss in air and nitrogen being 420 and 460°C, respectively. The resultant PI films with thickness about 15 μm exhibited high transparency (>88%) in visible region (400–700 nm). Also, the cured PI films possessed good mechanical properties with tensile strength of 60.52–69.31 MPa and tensile modulus of 0.98–1.30 GPa.
