Abstract
Ruthenium complexes are by far the most studied compounds that catalyze hydrogen transfer reactions. In this review, we describe the use in this field of ruthenium complexes bearing bidentate donor-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands. The review specifically covers the application in transfer hydrogenations of (κ2-CNHC,Y)-ruthenacyclic compounds where the Y donor atom is a N, P, O, or S atom, and where the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand is a classical imidazol-2-ylidene, a benzimidazol-2-ylidene, a mesoionic 1,2,3-triazolylidene, or an imidazol-4-ylidene ligand. Tridentate donor-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene complexes thus fall outside the scope of the review. Applications in (asymmetric) transfer hydrogenation of ketones, aldehydes, imines, alkenes, and nitrobenzene are discussed.

Abstract
A new series of Cu(II) complexes [bis[{(μ2-chloro)-2-MeO-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2,4-tert-butyl-2-OC6H2)}Cu(II)] (Cu1); bis[{(μ2-chloro)-2-MeS-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2,4-tert-butyl-2-(OC6H2)}Cu(II)] (Cu2); bis[{(μ2-chloro)-2-MeO-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2-(OC10H6)} Cu(II)] (Cu3); bis[{(μ2-chloro)-2-MeS-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2-(OC10H6)}Cu(II)] complex (Cu4); bis[{2-MeS-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2,4-tert-butyl-2-(OC6H2)}Cu(II)] (Cu5)] have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Visible and by X-ray crystallography for Cu1, Cu4 and Cu5. In the solid state, Cu1 features of a chloro-bridged dimer complex with κ2 coordination of the monoanionic phenoxy-imine ligand onto the copper center. On the other hand, the molecular structure of Cu4 reveals the naphthoxy-imine ligand with pendant S-group coordinated to the copper atom in tridentate meridional fashion. Treatment of [Cu(OAc)2·H2O] with two equiv. of [2-MeS-Ph-CH2-(N=CH)-2,4-tert-butyl-2-(HOC6H2)] led to a monomeric complex Cu5, with the ONS-donor Schiff base acting as a bidentate ligand. The redox behavior was explored by cyclic voltammetry. The reduction/oxidation potential of Cu(II) complexes depends on the structure and conformation of the central atom in the coordination compounds. Antioxidant activities of the complexes, Cu1 - Cu5, were determined by in vitro assays such as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radicals (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radicals (ABTS+). The dinuclear compounds Cu1-Cu4, from the concentration of 5 μM, presented a good activity in scavenging DPPH radical. In addition, most of the Cu(II) complexes showed ABTS.+ radical-scavenging activity. The monomeric complex Cu5 at all concentrations tested showed antioxidant inability. The cytotoxicity of the Cu1 and Cu3 was determined in V79 cell line by reduction of 3(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay.

Abstract
The structural, luminescence and chemosensor properties of boron difluoride o-hydroxydibenzoylmethanate (1) have been investigated. In the concentrated solution, PE (polyethylene) matrix, and crystals of 1, one observes the formation of J-aggregates. The crystal structure of 1 is in compliance with that of J-aggregates of the "brickwork type" consisting of dimers that comprise excimer traps. In time-resolved luminescence spectra of 1 in PE films and crystals, one observes luminescence bands corresponding to the luminescence of excimer J-aggregates. At application of external stimuli on the crystals of 1 (heating, grinding), one observes changes in the luminescence spectrum caused by redistribution of intensities of excimer and J-aggregate bands. 1 could act as an optic chemosensor for probing amines vapors with different response rates and different sensitivities controlled by their morphologies.

Abstract
The synthesis, spectroscopic properties, and in vitro cytotoxicity activity of a series of various salen-based triboron complexes have been designed and prepared from hemi-salen (L1 H3 - L4 H3 ) ligands and BF3 ·Et2 O or BPh3 under simple reaction conditions. The hemi-salen (L1 H3 - L4 H3 ) ligands and their BF2 or BPh2 chelating triboron complexes were characterized by means of NMR (1 H, 13 C, 19 F, and 11 B) spectra, FT-IR spectra, UV/VIS spectra, fluorescence spectra, mass spectra, melting point, as well as elemental analysis. The triboron [L(1 - 4) (BF2 )3 ] and [L(1 - 4) (BPh2 )3 ] complexes were investigated for their absorption and emission properties, and these complexes are also good chelates towards boron(III) fragments such as BF2 or BPh2 quantum yield in solution reaching up to 38%. The hemi-salen (L1 H3 - L4 H3 ) ligands and their BF2 or BPh2 chelating triboron complexes were tested for the in vitro anticancer activity against various cancer and normal cells (HeLa, DLD-1, ECC-1, PC-3, PNT-1A, and CRL-4010), and it was found that the cell viability of cancer cells was decreased while most of the healthy cells could still be viable. Also, the cytotoxicity studies showed that anticancer activity of hemi-salen (L1 H3 - L4 H3 ) ligands is higher than that of triboron [L(1 - 4) (BF2 )3 ] and [L(1 - 4) (BPh2 )3 ] complexes. The hemi-salen (L1 H3 - L4 H3 ) ligands showing the strongest cytotoxic effect in PC-3 cells were found to exhibit anticancer activity with apoptosis by increasing the level of ROS in the PC-3 cells.

Abstract
Imine derivatives were obtained by condensation of sulfanilamide with substituted aromatic aldehydes. The Schiff bases were thereafter reduced with sodium borohydride, leading to the corresponding amines, derivatives of 4-sulfamoylphenyl-benzylamine. These sulfonamides were investigated as inhibitors of the human carbonic anhydrase (hCA, EC 4.2.1.1) isoforms hCA I and II (cytosolic isozymes), as well as hCA IX and XII (transmembrane, tumor-associated enzymes). We noted that the compounds incorporating secondary amine moieties showed a better inhibitory activity against all CA isozymes compared to the corresponding Schiff bases. Low nanomolar CA II, IX and XII inhibitors were detected, whereas the activity against hCA I was less potent. The secondary amines incorporating sulfonamide or similar zinc-binding groups, poorly investigated chemotypes for designing metalloenzyme inhibitors, may offer interesting opportunities in the field due to the facile preparation and possibility to explore a vast chemical space.

Abstract
Boronic acid compounds with different substituted groups were handled to synthesize various ligands encoded as B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and B8. B5 and B7 were tested for the cytotoxic activity against the prostate cancer cells and it was found that the cell viability of cancer cells was decreased while most of the healthy cells could still be viable. 5 µM solutions of B5 and B7 decreased the cell viability to 33% and 44% whereas healthy cells were 71% and 95%, respectively, after treatment. Antimicrobial properties were explored against the bacterial and fungal microorganisms with B1, B5 and B7. The inhibition zones were evaluated for all boronic structures, and the growth inhibition zones were determined in a range of 7–13 mm diameter for different microorganism species. Staphylococcus aureus was the common microorganism that three boronic compounds with imine ligands showed the activity. Antioxidant features of B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7 and B8 were investigated by different processes such as Beta-carotene bleaching (BCB), 2,2-diphenyl picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and CUPric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) methods. Significant antioxidant activity was achieved by the phenyl boronic based ligands and these compounds demonstrated as much activity as standards (α-Toc and BHT). In addition, all structures were applied properly without any decomposition during the experiments. They were rather stable both in aqueous media and solid state.

Abstract
A new series of Schiff base ligands (L1-L3) and their corresponding fluorine/phenyl boron hybrid complexes [LnBF2] and [LnBPh2] (n=1, 2 or 3) have been synthesized and well characterized by both analytical and spectroscopic methods. The Schiff base ligands and their corresponding fluorine/phenyl boron hybrid complexes have been characterized by NMR ((1)H, (13)C and (19)F), FT-IR, UV-Vis, LC-MS, and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as melting point and elemental analysis. The fluorescence efficiencies of phenyl chelate complexes are greatly red-shifted compared to those of the fluorine chelate analogs based on the same ligands, presumably due to the large steric hindrance and hard π→π(∗) transition of the diphenyl boron chelation, which can effectively prevent molecular aggregation. The boron hybrid complexes were applied to the transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone derivatives to 1-phenylethanol derivatives in the presence of 2-propanol as the hydrogen source. The catalytic studies showed that boron hybrid complexes are good catalytic precursors for transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones in 0.1M iso-PrOH solution. Also, we have found that both steric and electronic factors have a significant impact on the catalytic properties of this class of molecules.
