Abstract
2,1,3-Benzochalcogenadiazoles C6 R4 N2 E (E/R; E=S, Se, Te; R=H, F, Cl, Br, I) and C6 H2 R2 N2 E (E/R'; E=S, Se, Te; R=Br, I) are 10π-electron hetarenes. By CV/EPR measurements, DFT calculations, and QTAIM and ELI-D analyses, it is shown that their molecular electron affinities (EAs) increase with decreasing Allen electronegativities and electron affinities of the E and non-hydrogen R (except Cl) atoms. DFT calculations for E/R+e⋅- →[E/R]⋅- electron capture reveal negative ΔG values numerically increasing with increasing atomic numbers of the E and R atoms; positive ΔS has a minor influence. It is suggested that the EA increase is caused by more effective charge/spin delocalization in the radical anions of heavier derivatives due to contributions from diffuse (a real-space expanded) p-AOs of the heavier E and R atoms; and that this counterintuitive effect might be of the general character.

Abstract
The influence of fluorination on the acid-base properties and the capacity of structurally related 6-5 bicyclic compounds - 1,3-benzodiazole 1, 1,2,3-benzotriazole 2 and 2,1,3-benzoselenadiazole 3 to σ-hole interactions, i. e. hydrogen (1 and 2) and chalcogen (3) bondings, is studied experimentally and computationally. The tetrafluorination increases the Brønsted acidity of the diazole and triazole scaffolds and the Lewis acidity of selenadiazole scaffold decreases the basicity. Increased Brønsted acidity facilitates anion binding via the formation of hydrogen bonds; particularly, tetrafluorinated derivative of 1 (compound 4) binds Cl- . Increased Lewis acidity of tetrafluorinated derivative of 3 (compound 10), however, is not enough for binding with Cl- and F- via chalcogen bonds in contrast to previously studied Te analog of 10. It is suggested that the maximum positive values of molecular electrostatic potential at the σ-holes, VS,max , can be a reasonable metric for design and synthesis of new anion receptors with selenadiazole-diazole/triazole hybrids as a special target. Related chlorinated compounds are also discussed.

Abstract
A simple and general approach to the synthesis (from commercial precursors) of eight out of nine possible (benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methanols fluorinated on the benzene ring is reported. Molecular and crystalline structures of most compounds were solved by X-ray diffraction analysis. This made it possible to reveal the influence of the number and arrangement of fluorine atoms in the benzene cycle on the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. It was found that the more fluorine atoms are present in a compound, the higher the dimensionality of the H-bonded structure is. Moreover, the presence of fluorine atoms in the synthesized compounds leads to the emergence of C–F…π interactions affecting crystal packing. The synthesized fluorinated (benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)methanols may serve as excellent bench compounds for the synthesis of a systematic series of fluorine-containing derivatives to study structure–property correlations in various fields of research from medicine to materials science.

Abstract
Chalcogen bonding (CB) is the focus of increased attention for its applications in medicinal chemistry, materials science, and crystal engineering. However, the origin of sulfur's recognition properties remains controversial, and experimental evidence for supporting theories is still emerging. Here, a comprehensive evaluation of sulfur CB interactions is presented by investigating 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole X-ray crystallographic structures gathered from the Cambridge Structure Database (CSD), Protein Data Bank (PDB), and own laboratory findings. Through the systematic analysis of substituent effects on a subset library of over thirty benzothiadiazole derivatives, the competing interactions have been categorized into four main classes, namely 2S-2N CB square, halogen bonding (XB), S⋅⋅⋅S, and hydrogen-bonding (HB). A geometric model is employed to characterize the 2S-2N CB square motifs and discuss the role of electrostatic, dipole, and orbital contributions toward the interaction.
