Abstract
A novel chromone-based Schiff base L was designed and synthesized by condensing an equimolar amount of 3-formyl chromone and 2,4-dinitro phenyl hydrazine. Schiff base L was developed as a potent colorimetric and fluorescent molecular probe to recognize Hg2+ ions over other competitive metal ions. In the presence of Hg2+, Schiff base L displays a naked-eye detectable color change under day and UV365 nm light. Various UV-Vis and fluorescence studies of L were performed in the absence and presence of Hg2+ to determine the sensitivity and the sensing mechanism. With high selectivity and specificity, the detection limit and association constant of L for Hg2+ were estimated at 1.87 µM and 1.234 × 107 M-1, respectively. The developed sensor L was applied to real soil samples for the detection of Hg2+.

Abstract
A novel fluoride (F-) colorimetric and fluorescent probe (P1) based on a core-extended perylene tetra-(alkoxycarbonyl) (PTAC) derivative was developed. The probe exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for distinguishing F- from other common anions through significant changes of the UV-Vis and fluorescence spectra. Job's plot analysis revealed that the stoichiometry of the P1-F- interaction is 1 : 1. The association constant between P1 and F- was estimated to be 9.7 × 102 M-1 and the detection limit of F- was about 0.97 μM. An approximately 76 nm red-shift in the absorption and fluorescent quenching response was observed when F- was associated with P1. The emission intensity (I 574) decreased linearly along with the F- concentration from 3 × 10-5 M to 2 × 10-4 M. The mechanism of intermolecular proton transfer (IPT) was deduced based on the changes in the absorption, fluorescence, electrochemistry, and 1H NMR titration spectra. The density functional theory (DFT) theoretical results of the P1-F- complex are in good agreement with the experimental results. The rapid detection of F- ions in the solid state and living cells was also studied.

N isomerization and chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), HNS functions as a fluorescence “turn on” sensor for Al3+ in buffered aqueous media. Based on the strong affinity of Al3+ to F− ions, the in situ generated Al3+–HNS complex can also be utilized as an effective chemosensor for F− sensing by metal displacement approach, ensuing quenching of fluorescence by the reversible return of HNS from Al3+–HNS complex. Thus a method using a single probe for the detection of both Al3+ and F− ions is developed. The system exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity for Al3+ and F− ions and the detection limits were found to be as low as 6.75 × 10−8 M and 7.89 × 10−7 M, respectively. Furthermore, the practical applicability of this probe has been examined in living cells. A simple Schiff-base ligand 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde semicarbazone (HNS) was synthesized and applied to the sequential sensing of Al3+ and F− ions in aqueous media and live cells.![]()

Abstract
Base catalysed ring opening ring closure (RORC) reaction of 6-methylchromone-3‑carbonitrile (1) with 1,3-cyclohexanedione afforded 8-methyl-1,2-dihydro-4H-chromeno[2,3-b]quinoline-4,6(3H)-dione (MDCQD). Theoretical calculations by Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-311G (d,p) level of theory was utilized to illustrate the equilibrium geometries of MDCQD. Also, the nonlinear optical properties, simple harmonic vibrational frequencies, thermo-chemical parameters and Mullikan atomic charges were calculated. In addition, the electronic absorption spectra in polar and non polar solvents were discussed on the basis of TD-DFT calculations. A nanofiber-like structure with high aggregation was resolved by using scanning electron microscopy images and its particle sizes were measured by particle size analyzer. The spectroscopic characteristics of the prepared thin film of MDCQD were studied in a wide spectral range of 200-2500nm. The analysis of the absorption edges affords two direct optical band gaps with energies of 1.00 and 2.76eV. A characteristic emission peak of photoluminescence spectrum in the visible region was detected and has a red-shift as a result of solvent polarity. The MDCQD film based heterojunction showed rectification behavior and diode-like characteristics. The photovoltaic characteristics under illumination of 100mW/cm2 were studied. The open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current were found to be 0.22V and 4.25×10-7A/cm2, respectively. Moreover, the prepared heterojunction showed remarkable phototransient characteristics which afford the probability for the operation as a photodiode.
