Abstract
Diversity in eleven Artemisia species from northern Pakistan was assessed based on as per suitability of their elemental contents with thermal conductivity detection and ICP-AES procedures. Results indicated the presence of 13 major elements in the Artemisia species with varied concentrations including Carbon (45.7%, 45,7000 ppm-49.8%, 49,8000 ppm), Nitrogen (2.03%, 20,300 ppm-3.50%, 35,000 ppm), Phosphorus (0.168%, 1680 ppm-0.642%, 6420 ppm), Potassium (2.38%, 23,800 ppm-4.72%, 47,200 ppm), Sulphur (1920 ppm, 0.192%-4780 ppm, 0.478%), Boron (23.8 ppm, 0.00238%-71.7 ppm, 0.00717%), Calcium (0.733%, 7330 ppm-2.249%, 22,490 ppm), Magnesium (0.116%, 1160 ppm-0.267%, 2670 ppm), Zinc (27.7 ppm, 0.00277%-47.9 ppm, 0.00479%), Manganese (25.7 ppm, 0.00257%-93.8 ppm, 0.00938%), Iron (353 ppm, 0.0353%-1532 ppm, 0.1532%), Copper (14.1 ppm, 0.00141%-26.2 ppm, 0.00262%) and Sodium (105 ppm, 0.0105%-587 ppm, 0.0587%). Cluster analysis distributed the Artemisia species into two major groups (G1 and G2) on the basis of their elemental content where G1 contained species like, Artemisia herba alba Asso., A. tournefortiana Rachb., A. rutifolia Steph. ex Spreng., and A. vulgaris L., with the presence of all elements with the maximum amount of S, Zn, P, Ca, and Mg, while G2 contained species like Artemisia biennis Willd., A. chamaemelifolia Vill., A. capillaris, L., A. gmelinii Weber ex Stech., A. indica Willd., A. maritima L., and A. verlotiorum Lamotte., with all elements but significant concentrations of B, N, C, K, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Na. PCA analysis displayed maximum species diversity in the axes two, while axes one showed lower diversity. Additionally, the elevated levels of elements recorded as compared to the threshold levels recommended in the literature for medicinal plants require extraordinary precautionary measures before or during using Artemisia as medication to avoid metal toxicity.

Abstract
Actinomycetes play a vital role as one of the most important natural resources for both pharmaceutical and agricultural applications. The actinomycete strain SPRI-371, isolated from soil collected in Jiangsu province, China, was classified as Streptomyces aureus based on its morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular biological characteristics. Its bacterial activity metabolites were identified as aureonuclemycin (ANM), belonging to adenosine derivatives with the molecular formula C16H19N5O9 for ANM A and C10H13N5O3 for ANM B. Simultaneously, the industrial fermentation process of a mutated S. aureus strain SPRI-371 was optimized in a 20 m3 fermentation tank, featuring a rotation speed of 170 rpm, a pressure of 0.05 MPa, an inoculum age of 36−40 h and a dissolved oxygen level maintained at 1−30% within 40−80 h and at >60% in the later period, resulting in an ANM yield of >3700 mg/L. In the industrial separation of fermentation broth, the sulfuric acid solution was selected to adjust pH and 4# resin was used for adsorption. Then, it was resolved with 20% ethanol solution and concentrated in a vacuum (60−65 °C), with excellent results. Antibacterial experiments showed that ANM was less active or inactive against Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae, Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola and most bacteria, yeast and fungi in vitro. However, in vivo experiments showed that ANM exhibited extremely significant protective and therapeutic activity against diseases caused by X. oryzae pv. oryzae and X. oryzae pv. oryzicola in rice and X. citri in oranges and lemons. In field trials, ANM A 150 gai/ha + ANM B 75 gai/ha exhibited excellent therapeutic activity against rice bacterial leaf blight, citrus canker and rice bacterial leaf streak. Furthermore, as the dosage and production cost of ANM are lower than those of commercial drugs, it has good application prospects.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exposure to arsenic (As)-containing pesticides was associated with an increased risk for Parkinson's disease (PD). Arsenic also induced in murine brains α-synuclein aggregates, a pathognomic feature of PD. OBJECTIVES People living on farms irrigated with high As water in Taiwan are likely exposed to increased As. We addressed whether increased farm soil As levels correlate with an increased PD risk. METHODS We used the information from several national surveys (1983-1986) on soil metal contents to study the relationships between soil metal contents and PD prevalence in Taiwan. PD prevalence (2009-2013) was calculated with a database from Taiwan's compulsory national health insurance. A patient is defined by a PD diagnosis and prescriptions of Levodopa in three or more office visits in twelve months. We used regression models to study the correlation between PD prevalence and soil metal contents. RESULTS The PD prevalence ranged from 83 to 213 per one hundred thousand persons in different regions of Taiwan. Among the studied heavy metals, we found only As was significantly associated with the PD prevalence. The top three regions (Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan) in the PD prevalence list correspond exactly with the top three in soil As levels. Soil As levels and PD prevalence had a strong correlation (r = 0.75). CONCLUSION PD prevalence is statistically correlated with farm soil As levels in Taiwan.

Abstract
Rheumatic diseases are complex autoimmune diseases which include among others rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). These diseases are characterized by prolonged and increased secretion of inflammatory factors, eventually leading to inflammation. This is often accompanied by persistent pain and stiffness in the joint and finally bone destruction and osteoporosis. These diseases can occur at any age, regardless of gender or origin. Autoimmune arthritis is admittedly associated with long-term treatment, and discontinuation of medication is associated with unavoidable relapse. Therefore, it is important to detect the disease at an early stage and apply appropriate preventative measures. During inflammation, pro-inflammatory factors such as interleukins (IL)-6, -17, -21, -22, and -23 are secreted, while anti-inflammatory factors including IL-10 are downregulated. Research conducted over the past several years has focused on inhibiting inflammatory pathways and activating anti-inflammatory factors to improve the quality of life of people with rheumatic diseases. The aim of this paper is to review current knowledge on stimulatory and inhibitory pathways involving the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). STAT3 has been shown to be one of the crucial factors involved in inflammation and is directly linked with other pro-inflammatory factors and thus is a target of current research on rheumatoid diseases.

Abstract
It has been reported that numerous of Fusobacterium nucleatum outer membrane proteins take part in cancerogenesis. Therefore, it is very interesting to study their interactions with metal ions and the ability to produce reactive oxygen species, which may be involved in cancer progression. Since investigations of metal binding to proteins are often based on fragments that contain the metal-binding domains, designing model peptides should be very mindful. As was shown in this paper, very similar protein fragments may behave differentially. Herein, combined potentiometric, spectroscopic, and computational studies were performed to determine metal ion binding by ligands constituting fragments of porin protein P1. Two studied tetrapeptides (Ac-KEHK-NH2 and Ac-EHKA-NH2) that have common EHK motif have different coordination properties and reactivity. Therefore, we should be cautious when transferring the behavior of small peptide fragments to whole protein.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia has been recognized as a worldwide public health concern. This study was conducted to examine the association between serum copper (Cu) concentration and the prevalence of hyperuricemia in a middle-aged and elderly population. Serum Cu concentration was measured by Roche modular P800 using the PAESA method. Serum uric acid (UA) concentration was detected by a Beckman Coulter AU 5800. Presence of hyperuricemia was defined as serum UA ≥ 416 μmol/L for men and ≥360 μmol/L for women. The association between serum Cu concentration and the prevalence of hyperuricemia was evaluated by logistic regression. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 17.6% (n = 6,212) in the present study. Relative to the lowest quintile, the age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios for hyperuricemia were 1.38 (95% CI: 1.12 to 1.70), 1.34 (95% CI: 1.07 to 1.66), and 1.53 (95% CI: 1.23 to 1.91) in the third, fourth, and fifth serum Cu concentration quintiles (P for trend < 0.001). Similar results were found both in men and women subgroups. None of the findings were materially altered after adjustment for additional potential confounders. In conclusion, in this population-based cross-sectional study, serum Cu concentration was positively associated with the prevalence of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Overactivation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway is an important driver of many human cancers. First line, FDA-approved therapies targeting MAPK signalling, which include BRAF and MEK inhibitors, have variable success across cancers, and a significant number of patients quickly develop resistance. In recent years, a number of preclinical studies have reported alternative methods of overcoming resistance, which include promoting apoptosis, modulating autophagy, and targeting mitochondrial metabolism. This review summarizes mechanisms of resistance to approved MAPK-targeted therapies in BRAF-mutated cancers and discusses novel preclinical approaches to overcoming resistance.

Abstract
A considerable attention has been focused on the possible association between ultra-trace elements (UTEs) status and pathogenesis of many diseases including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). UTEs have important roles in numerous metabolic processes. Serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels in RA are not studied previously. The correlation of serum Cs, Rb, and Re levels with the well-known serological parameters, anticyclic citrullinated protein antibody (ACPA), C-reactive protein (CRP), ESR, and rheumatoid factor (RF) is also not studied previously. The present study aimed to measure the level and the correlation between serum UTEs with various blood tests results in RA patients. Serum Cs, Rb, Re, ACPA, CRP, RF, and ESR were measured in Iraqi RA patients who have a positive ACPA (ACPA > 25 U/ml) and compared with healthy individuals. There were significant elevations (p < 0.05) in serum levels of all the measured parameters as compared with those of the healthy control group except Rb and uric acid which have not been changed. Subgrouping of patients according to the results of CRP and RF leads to different results. In the low-CRP group, the high-RF subgroup showed an elevation of ACPA, Cs, and ESR in comparison with the low-RF patients. In the high-CRP group, the patients with high RF showed an increase in the levels of Cs, Rb, ESR, and ACPA. The patient group with high RF and high CRP showed more significant correlations between serum UTEs and serological tests. Serum levels of UTEs were significantly altered in RA patients. The variations in the serum levels of the measured parameters in RA need more investigation to explore the possible association between these UTEs and RA. RA subgroups, according to the results of CRP and CPA, produce more and various information than taking RA as a whole group in the estimation of UTEs.

Abstract
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease in which numerous cells and mediators affect inflammatory conditions and disease severity. To compare the serum levels of adiponectin, vitamin D, copper, and zinc in patients with RA and to investigate the relationship between these parameters and RA severity. Ninety patients with RA and 30 healthy controls participated in this cross-sectional case-control study between November 2016 and April 2017; according to the ACR/EULAR criteria for RA. Serum levels of adiponectin were determined by ELISA; copper and zinc by colorimetric spectrophotometry; and vitamin D by HPLC. Kruskal-Wallis and Spearman tests were performed using SPSS software and data were depicted by GraphPad Prism software. Compared with healthy controls, the serum level of adiponectin was significantly increased, whereas vitamin D was significantly decreased in patients with RA. Adiponectin and vitamin D levels were inversely correlated in RA subgroups (P < 0.001, r = - 0.410). Adiponectin and vitamin D correlated with RA severity. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in copper and zinc levels between RA groups and controls. The definitive roles of adiponectin, vitamin D, copper, and zinc are not completely determined in RA development. Based on disease activity, these parameters can modulate inflammatory conditions, thus they have the potential to be used as promising therapeutic biomarkers to follow up the severity of disease, as well as the progression and treatment success in patients with RA.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate soil contamination with trace elements and fluoride at sites in Szczecin (NW Poland) where economic activity was historically associated with the use of trace metals. As the Polish legislation does not recognize the lasting impact of historical pollution on soils, land developers are not obliged to determine soil pollution in the new residential areas, including parks and playgrounds for children. Therefore, in this study, at the locations of defunct metalwork enterprises (smithies, foundries, chemical plants, and small metal production plants), which were closed down after World War II, we determined lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and cobalt (Co) levels in the soil. In addition, we also determined fluoride (F) levels due to the contemporary fluoride pollution in the area generated by a large chemical plant with a post-production phosphogypsum waste landfill and a power plant complex. Our results show that soil at the sites of now-defunct smithies can still act as a significant source of trace metals. Pb concentration in the surface (0⁻20 cm) and subsurface (20⁻40 cm) layers exceeded concentration thresholds for soils with first-degree pollution. The concentrations of Zn and Cu also exceeded their natural background limits. Furthermore, our research indicates an increased concentration of fluoride in surface layers of the soil; however, not exceeding the fluoride content threshold. These observations have important consequences for public health and safety because, presently, the studied sites function as housing estates and other public facilities. Therefore, contaminated soil at these sites may pose a threat to the health of local residents and should be closely monitored for trace metal contamination levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES It has been suggested that exposure to heavy metal cadmium (Cd) may contribute to a high risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study was to investigate the association of RA prevalence and serum concentrations of Cd and other heavy metals through large survey data analysis. DESIGN A retrospective cross-sectional survey study. SETTING Large population survey in Korea. PARTICIPANTS 53 829 subjects participated in Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2008 to 2013. INTERVENTIONS Heavy metals were measured in different time periods of the survey programme which resulted in three different data sets for analysis: Cd, mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) from 2008 to 2012 survey; serum manganese (Mn) and urine arsenic (As) from 2008 to 2009 survey; and serum zinc (Zn) from 2010 survey. RA prevalence and its associations with serum heavy metals were analysed using a general linear/logistic regression model of complex sample design. RESULTS Serum Cd was elevated in patients with RA (RA vs control: 1.30±0.07 µg/L vs 1.17±0.01 µg/L, p<0.01). There were no significant differences in urine levels of As or serum levels of Pb, Hg, Mn or Zn between patients with RA and controls. OR (95% CI) of RA prevalence according to 1 µg/L increase of serum Cd level was 1.28(95% CI 1.03 to 1.61). Prevalence of RA in women was increased with increasing quartiles of Cd levels, with a 19-fold difference in female RA prevalence between individuals in the lowest quartile of serum Cd level and those in the highest quartile (0.18% vs 3.42%). Cubic spline curve of prevalence OR showed increased risk of RA according to increased serum Cd level. Increased risk of RA in men was not observed with increased serum Cd levels. CONCLUSION There was an increased prevalence of RA in females associated with increased serum levels of Cd in the Korean population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper is an essential metal for maintenance of many biological functions; however, excessive amount can induce inflammation and oxidative stress. Tetrathiomolybdate (TM) is a copper chelator for treatment of Wilson's disease, and decreased the severity of autoimmune arthritis in mice. OBJECTIVE In this report, we evaluated the effects of TM in a mouse model for psoriasis. METHODS Imiquimod-induced psoriasis murine model was used. We applied immunohistochemistry staining and ELISA to determine levels of cytokines in the inflamed skin, splenocytes, and draining lymph nodes. In addition, we used keratinocytes and splenocytes to test the inhibitory effects of TM on cytokine production and activation of transcription factors. RESULTS Our results showed that TM significantly reduced cumulative scores, epidermis thickness, and ki-67 expression in the inflamed skin. In addition, TM decreased skin cytokine levels and systemic inflammation. Moreover, TM suppressed activation in keratinocytes and splenocytes with reduction in phosphorylation of Erk1/2 and STAT3. CONCLUSION These findings are strong evidence that TM can inhibit psoriasis in the model.

Abstract
In China's swine industry, copper is generally supplemented above the National Research Council (NRC) requirement (2012) because of its antimicrobial properties and the potential for growth promotion. Yet few are concerned about whether this excess supplementation is necessary. In this study, the 16S rRNA pyrosequencing was designed and used to investigate the effect of dietary copper level on the diversity of the fecal microbial community and the correlation of copper level with the serum level of inflammatory cytokines in Sprague-Dawley rat models. The results showed that the diet containing a high level of Cu (120 and 240 mg/kg) changed the microbial richness and diversity of rat feces associated with the increased copper content in the rat ileac and colonic digesta. Furthermore, a Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that an accumulation of unabsorbed copper in the chyme was correlated with the microbial composition of the rat feces, which was linked with TNF-α in serum. The results suggest that dietary copper level may have a direct impact on circulating inflammatory cytokines in the serum, perhaps inducing an inflammatory response by altering the microbial composition of rat feces. Serum TNF-α could be the chief responder to excessive copper exposure.
