Abstract
The design of efficient catalysts for catalytic ethylene (C2H4) oxidation is of crucial importance for extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. Herein, a carbon modified SBA-15 supported Pt catalyst (Pt/CSBA-15) was prepared in situ by a facile solid phase grinding-infiltration-inert atmosphere calcination method. Characterization results reveal that in the Pt/CSBA-15 catalysts thin carbon layers are successfully formed in the hexagonal pores of SBA-15. Additionally, Pt particles are well dispersed in the channels of SBA-15, and Pt/CSBA-15 has a smaller Pt particle size than the catalyst without carbon modification (i.e., Pt/SBA-15). O2 is more feasibly adsorbed and activated on small-sized Pt particles, and in situ formed carbon species enhance the hydrophobicity of catalysts. As a result, both 3Pt/CSBA-15 and 5Pt/CSBA-15 are able to maintain 100% conversion of 50 ppm of C2H4 for more than 7 h at 0 °C. 3Pt/CSBA-15 even achieves 81.5% C2H4 conversion and 71.6% CO2 yield after 20 h, exhibiting much more prominent catalytic performances than 3Pt/SBA-15. DFT calculations and in situ FTIR measurements confirm that small-sized Pt particles possess strong O2 affinity to promote O2 adsorption, and in situ formed hydrophobic carbon layers efficiently suppress competitive H2O adsorption. Such a unique one-step catalyst preparation method for regulating the size of metal particles and the hydrophobicity of catalysts can be perfectly utilized to develop simple and efficient hydrophobic catalysts applied in low-temperature oxidation of C2H4.

Abstract
The distinction in coordination modes of metal complexes leads to their versatile structural features and unique properties. Here, we report two tetradentate Schiff base ligands (H2L1 and H2L2) bearing N2O2 donor sets, tactically selected to provide distinct coordination modes with different metal ions. The ligands were utilized to synthesize their organotin(IV) (1-4) and vanadium(V) (5) derivatives. The synthesized compounds were characterized using elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, multi-nuclei NMR (1H, 13C, and 119Sn) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The organotin(IV) derivatives (1-4) displayed hepta-coordination around both the Sn centres as they were achieved in their dimeric form. Contrariwise, the vanadium(V) compound (5) was isolated as a mononuclear entity exhibiting penta-coordinated geometry around the vanadium centre. The variation in the coordination modes was evident in their UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. The organotin(IV) compounds (1-4) exhibited a strong emission band centred at 468 nm when excited at a wavelength of 360 nm whereas the vanadium(V) (5) derivative displayed poor fluorogenic response. Compound 1 was further explored for the fluorogenic chemo-sensing of permanganate ions (MnO4-) amongst various anions by quenching response. A detailed investigation of the recognition of permanganate ions was accomplished by spectrofluorometric, spectroscopic (119Sn NMR), mass spectrometric, and computational studies.

Abstract
Ethylene, released from fruits and vegetables (F&V) after harvest and during storage, often accelerates the ripening or over-ripening and may be caused decay, leading to substantial economic loss. Dendritic mesoporous silica supported (DMS) platinum (Pt/DMS) catalyst as ethylene scavenger was prepared and various characterization results indicated that the as-prepared Pt/DMS with ultra-low Pt loading exhibited excellent ethylene scavenging performance, which could maintain the complete ethylene conversion (100%) over 50 h at 25 °C and even 0 °C for 100 min with superior consecutive cycles by repeating the use of Pt/DMS. The presence of Pt/DMS delayed banana softening, and browning, reduced weight loss and kept the freshness for 14 days. In conclusion, the active packaging incorporated with Pt/DMS catalysts with high ethylene scavenging efficiency is expected to be extremely beneficial to the post-harvest storage life of other fruits and vegetables that needs further related investigation.

Abstract
Food packaging was not as important in the past as it is now, because the world has more people but fewer food resources. Food packaging will become more prevalent and go from being a nice-to-have to an essential feature of modern life. Food packaging has grown to be an important industry sector in today’s world of more people and more food. Food packaging innovation faces significant challenges in extending perishable food products’ shelf life and contributing to meeting daily nutrient requirements as people nowadays are searching for foods that offer additional health advantages. Modern food preservation techniques have two objectives: process viability and safe, environmentally friendly end products. Long-term storage techniques can include the use of edible coatings and films. This article gives a succinct overview of the supplies and procedures used to coat food products with conventional packaging films and coatings. The key findings summarizing the biodegradable packaging materials are emphasized for their ability to prolong the freshness and flavor of a wide range of food items; films and edible coatings are highlighted as viable alternatives to traditional packaging methods. We discuss the safety concerns and opportunities presented by applying edible films and coatings, allowing it to be used as quality indicators for time-sensitive foods.
