Sorption characteristics of Cu(II) ions onto silica gel-immobilized calix[4]arene polymer in aqueous solutions: batch and column studies

Removal of Cr(VI) by glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan encapsulating microscale zero-valent iron: Synthesis, mechanism, and longevity

Microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) has shown great potential for groundwater Cr(VI) remediation. However, low Cr(VI) removal capacity caused by passivation restricted the wide use of mZVI. We prepared mZVI/GCS by encapsulating mZVI in a porous glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan matrix, and the formation of the passivation layer was alleviated by reducing the contact between zero-valent iron particles. The average pore diameter of mZVI/GCS was 8.775 nm, which confirmed the mesoporous characteristic of this material. Results of batch experiments demonstrated that mZVI/GCS exhibited high Cr(VI) removal efficiency in a wide range of pH (2-10) and temperature (5-35°C). Common groundwater coexisting ions slightly affected mZVI/GCS. The material showed great reusability, and the average Cr(VI) removal efficiency was 90.41% during eight cycles. In this study, we also conducted kinetics and isotherms analysis. Pseudo-second-order model was the most matched kinetics model. The Cr(VI) adsorption process was fitted by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models, and the maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of mZVI/GCS reached 243.63 mg/g, which is higher than the adsorption capacities of materials reported in most of the previous studies. Notably, the column capacity for Cr(VI) removal of a mZVI/GCS-packed column was 6.4 times higher than that of a mZVI-packed column in a 50-day experiment. Therefore, mZVI/GCS with a porous structure effectively relieved passivation problems of mZVI and showed practical application prospects as groundwater Cr(VI) remediation material with practical application prospects.

Fluorescence switchable sensor enabled by a calix[4]arene-Cu(II) complex system for selective determination of itraconazole in human serum and aqueous solution

A switchable fluorescence sensor based on a calix (Monapathi et al., 2021) [4]arene:Cu²⁺ complex (FLCX/Cu) has been developed for the detection of itraconazole (ITZ) with high sensitivity and specificity. For the development of the sensor, the selective complexation of a fluorescent calix (Monapathi et al., 2021) [4]arene derivative (FL-CX) with the Cu²⁺ ion causing fluorescence quenching was utilized. In addition, the sensor properties of the FLCX/Cu prepared were investigated. For this purpose, various substances (selected anions, cations, and drugs) with which ITZ can be found together were studied in an aqueous solution. Limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) values were determined in the range of 1.00-60.0 μg/L as 3.34 μg/L and 11.1 μg/L for ITZ, respectively. Moreover, the real sample analyses were performed in human serum and tablet form. Furthermore, the effect of some possible serum contents on sensor performance was also studied. All these studies confirmed the development of a simple, precise, accurate, reproducible, highly sensitive, and very stable fluorescence sensor.

Progress in surface-modified silicas for Cr(VI) adsorption: A review

Various toxic chemicals are discharging to the environment due to rapid industrialization and polluting soil, water, and air causing numerous diseases including life-threatening cancer. Among these pollutants, Cr(VI) or hexavalent chromium is one of the most carcinogenic and toxic contaminants hostile to human health and other living things. Therefore, along with other contaminants, the removal of Cr(VI) efficiently is very crucial to keep our environment neat and clean. On the other hand, silica has a lot of room to modify its surfaces as it is available with various sizes, shapes, pore sizes, surface areas etc. and the surface silanol groups are susceptible to design and prepare adsorbents for Cr(VI). This review emphases on the progress in the development of different types of silica-based adsorbents by modifying the surfaces of silica and their application for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. Toxicity of Cr(VI), different silica surface modification processes, and removal techniques are also highlighted. The adsorption capacities of the surface-modified silica materials with other parameters are discussed extensively to understand how to select the best condition, silica and modifiers to achieve optimum removal performance. The adsorption mechanisms of various adsorbents are also discussed. Finally, future prospects are summarized and some suggestions are given to enhance the adsorption capacities of the surface-modified silica materials.

Recent progress to construct calixarene-based polymers using covalent bonds: synthesis and applications

The combination of supramolecular chemistry and polymer sciences creates a great possibility to afford calixarene-based polymers offering unique features and applications. The enhancement of calixarene's versatility in this manner has made chemists better able to achieve different objectives in host-guest chemistry. The calixarene-based polymers can be divided into covalent polymers and supramolecular polymers regarding the interactions. Although there are several studies available on the calixarene-based supramolecular polymers, there is a paucity of studies on the calixarene-based covalent polymers. In this paper, the most recent developments and applications of the calixarene-based covalent polymers in the last two decades have been reviewed. We have particularly focused on the polymers, including those where the calixarene molecules have been used as macromonomers and polymerize through covalent bonds. Moreover, covalent polymers or solid supports functionalized with calixarenes are highlighted as well.

New hybrid adsorbent based on porphyrin functionalized silica for heavy metals removal: Synthesis, characterization, isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies

The pollution of water resources due to the disposal of toxic heavy metals has been a growing global concern for the last decades. For this purpose, the search for effective and economic material based adsorbents is required, due to the efficiency of the process. In this work, a novel inorganic-organic hybrid material based on silica chemically modified with a porphyrin (SiNTPP), with a high metal removal efficiency, was developed. The new material was characterized using a set of suitable techniques such as ¹³C NMR of the solid state, elemental analysis, FTIR, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, BET surface area, BJH pore sizes and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The new material surface exhibits good chemical and thermal stability based on the obtained thermogravimetric curves (TGA). An adsorption study was accomplished to investigate the effect of porphyrin-silica hybrid on the removal of Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solutions using a batch method. The effect of various parameters, such as initial metal concentration, pH, temperature, as well as the kinetics and thermodynamics for sorption on SiNTPP were investigated. The studies demonstrate that adsorption is fast, as proved by the equilibrium achievement within 25min. The metals removal from aqueous solution are better adapted to the Langmuir isotherm model than to the Freundlich model. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS°) disclose that the process was endothermic and spontaneous in nature, and the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second order kinetics. The adsorbent can be regenerated continuously without affecting its extraction percentage. Its effectiveness is highly justified compared to previous described materials.

Silica-Calix Hybrid Composite of Allyl Calix[4]arene Covalently Linked to MCM-41 Nanoparticles for Sustained Release of Doxorubicin into Cancer Cells

An inorganic-organic hybrid material, MCM-allylCalix, was synthesized by covalent modification of an MCM-41 surface with a tetra-allyl calixarene conjugate. The synthesized hybrid was characterized by ¹³C and ²⁹Si MAS-NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses. The application of this MCM-allylCalix hybrid has been demonstrated for loading and in vitro release of doxorubicin (Dox) in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) buffer as well as in the cancer cells, viz., MCF7, HeLa, and MDA-MB231. The Dox-loaded hybrid, MCM-allylCalix-Dox, was characterized by TEM, FT-IR, TGA, N₂ sorption, diffuse refectance spectroscopy-UV, and fluorescence microscopy to confirm the presence of the drug. The release study of the drug from MCM-allylCalix-Dox was carried out in PBS buffer at pH 5 and 7.4. The results showed ∼140% increase in the release of Dox at pH 5 compared to that at pH 7.4 in 144 h, suggesting a pH-triggered release of the drug. MCM-allylCalix-Dox releases a greater amount of Dox compared to that released from unmodified MCM-Dox. Cytotoxicity studies suggested that MCM-allylCalix-Dox exhibits anticancer activity that is dependent on the nature of the cell. The Dox-loaded hybrid shows more cytotoxicity for MCF7 compared to that for the HeLa and MDA-MB231 cells. This was further supported by ∼120% more internalization of Dox into MCF7 cells compared to that in the other two cell lines. Both fluorescence microscopy and fluorescence-activated cell sorting studies suggested concentration-dependent internalization of Dox into the MCF7 and HeLa cells. The results suggested that the inorganic-organic hybrid can be useful in sustained drug delivery into cancer cells.

Removal of lindane from an aqueous solution by using aminopropyl silica gel-immobilized calix[6]arene

An aminopropyl silica gel-immobilized calix[6]arene (C[6]APS) has been used for the removal of lindane from an aqueous solution in batch sorption technique. The C[6]APS was synthesized with p-tert-butylcalix[6]arene hexacarboxylate derivative and aminopropyl silica gel in the presence of N,N'-diisopropyl carbodiimide coupling reagent. The sorption study was carried out as functions of solution pH, contact time, initial lindane concentration, C[6]APS dosage and ionic strength of solution. The matrix effect of natural water samples on the sorption efficiency of C[6]APS was also investigated. Maximum lindane removal was obtained at a wide pH range of 2-8 and sorption equilibrium was achieved in 2h. The isotherm analysis indicated that the sorption data can be represented by both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Increasing ionic strength of the solutions increased the sorption efficiency and matrix of natural water samples had no effect on the sorption of lindane. By using multilinear regression model, regression equation was also developed to explain the effects of the experimental variables.

Surface modification of glass beads with glutaraldehyde: characterization and their adsorption property for metal ions

In this study, a new material that adsorbs the metal ions was prepared by modification of the glass beads surfaces with glutaraldehyde. First, the glass beads were etched with 4M NaOH solution. Then, they were reacted with 3-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (APTES). Finally, silanized glass beads were treated with 25% of glutaraldehyde solution. The characterization studies by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), elemental analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) indicated that modification of the glass bead surfaces was successfully performed. The adsorption studies exhibited that the modified glass beads could be efficiently used for the removal of the metal cations and anion (chromate ion) from aqueous solutions via chelation and ion-exchange mechanisms. For both Pb(II) and Cr(VI), selected as model ions, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved in 60 min and adsorption of both ions followed the second-order kinetic model. It was found that the sorption data was better represented by the Freundlich isotherm in comparison to the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) were 9.947 and 11.571 mg/g, respectively. The regeneration studies also showed that modified glass beads could be re-used for the adsorption of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions over three cycles.

Preparation of p-tert[(dimethylamino)methyl]-calix[4]arene functionalized aminopropylpolysiloxane resin for selective solid-phase extraction and preconcentration of metal ions

A new p-tert-[(dimethylamino)methyl]-1,3-bisglyciyl-calix[4]arene functionalized aminopropylpolysiloxane resin (APPS-CA) has been prepared and investigated for selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) of trace Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) prior to their determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The characterization of the surface modification was performed on the basis of FT-IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. The separation/preconcentration conditions of analytes were investigated, including effect of pH, the shaking time, the sample flow rate and volume, the elution condition, the interfering ions and stability test. At pH 4.0, the maximum adsorption capacity of Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) were 47.2, 34.3, 52.8, 29.8 and 36.4 mg g(-1), respectively. The adsorbed metal ions were quantitatively eluted by 2.0 mL of 0.5 mol L(-1) HCl. Common coexisting ions did not interfere with the separation. According to the definition of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the detection limits (3 sigma) of this method were found to be 0.58, 0.33, 0.47, 0.61 and 0.14 ng mL(-1) for Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II), respectively. The relative standard deviation under optimum conditions is less than 4.0%. The application of this new adsorbent to preconcentration trace Cr (III), Cu (II), Ni (II), Co (II) and Zn (II) of two water samples gave high accurate and precise results.

Powerful reactive sorption of silver(I) and mercury(II) onto poly(o-phenylenediamine) microparticles

The strong adsorbability of Ag(I) and Hg(II) ions onto fine poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) microparticles synthesized through a chemically oxidative polymerization of o-phenylenediamine was systematically examined and PoPD/Ag nanocomposites were facilely prepared through the reactive sorption method. The effect of the (NH4)2S2O8 oxidant/o-phenylenediamine monomer ratio on the polymerization yield, macromolecular structure, conductivity, and insolubility of the PoPD microparticles was studied. The Ag(I) adsorbability of the microparticles was significantly optimized by varying the oxidant/monomer ratio, doping state, Ag(I) concentration, sorption time, and solution pH. The Ag(I) adsorbance steadily increases with changing oxidant/monomer molar ratio from 3/1 to 1/1, reaching up to the highest Ag(I) adsorbance of 533 mg.g(-1) at the oxidant/monomer ratio of 1/1. The sorption process fits the pseudosecond-order kinetics. The sorption is rapid because both the adsorbance and adsorptivity within 30 min reach up to 76% of the final values. The initial sorption rate of silver ions obtained from the pseudosecond-order equation is 12.9 mg.g(-1).min(-1). The highest adsorptivity of silver ions is up to 99.1%. The optimal solution pH for Ag(I) sorption is around 5.0. The sorption mechanism may include the chelation and redox reaction between Ag(I) ions and amine/imine groups on the PoPD chains. Similarly, the microparticles also have powerful Hg(II) adsorbability with 96.7% adsorptivity at an initial Hg(II) concentration of 4 mM. Competitive sorption between Ag(I) and Hg(II) in their mixture solution onto the microparticles was studied, exhibiting a preferential sorption toward Ag(I). The microparticles as a cost-effective sorbent demonstrate a promising application in the removal and even recovery of heavy-metal ions from wastewater. The PoPD/Ag nanocomposites possess (1) high Ag content of 34.8 wt %, (2) small diameter of Ag nanoparticles of around 10-20 nm, (3) narrow size distribution, (4) intrinsic electrical conductivity that is much higher than that of original PoPD microparticles without Ag.
