Regeneration of Granulated Spent Activated Carbon with 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene Using Thermally Activated Persulfate

Chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) are persistent organic pollutants often found in groundwater near industrial sites or in industrial wastewaters. Adsorption into activated carbon is a common strategy to remediate these waters, but spent activated carbon results in a toxic residue to manage. To avoid the transport of the chlorinated compounds out of the site, the in-situ regeneration of the spent activated carbon can be considered for reuse to implement a circular economy. In this work, the regeneration of a commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) has been carried out using thermally activated sodium persulfate (TAP). GAC was previously saturated in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (124-TCB) as the model compound. The initial adsorption value was 350 mg_124-TCB·g_GAC^–1. First, the nonproductive consumption of sodium persulfate was studied at different temperatures using nonsaturated GAC. Then, the regeneration of the saturated GAC (5 g) was studied by an aqueous solution (166 mM) of TAP (1 L) at a temperature range from 20 to 80 °C. The possible recovery of the adsorption capacity was studied after 3 h of treatment in three successive adsorption–regeneration cycles at the selected temperature (60 °C). The physicochemical changes of the GAC were also investigated before and after the regeneration treatments. The results evidence the significant deposition of sulfate on the GAC after each treatment of regeneration, which avoids the recovery of the initial adsorption capacity. Therefore, each regeneration cycle was necessarily followed by a washing step at 60 °C to remove this sulfate. After that, the regeneration treatment achieved a stable and high recovery of the initial adsorption capacity of about 48.2%.

Permeable reactive surface-biobarriers. Testing and evaluation of an ecotechnology for the removal of agrotoxic compounds carried by agricultural runoffs

PURPOSE

The objective of the work is to determine the best operating conditions for variants of an ecological engineering tool (permeable reactive surface biobarrier -PRSB-) potentially useful for the protection of water resources, preventing the arrival of sediments and pesticides transported by runoffs and tile drainage from agricultural lands, to water bodies.

METHODS

Four PRB-prototypes were constructed as fixed-bed horizontal channels packed with a porous material supporting an enriched microbial biofilm. Their dynamic and stoichiometric performance was evaluated in the presence or absence of granular activated carbon, with limiting or sufficient O₂ supply. The removal of the pesticides and their leading catabolic derivatives were determined by HPLC. The most abundant cultivable microorganisms were isolated and identified by the sequencing of 16sDNA amplicons.

RESULTS

The pollutant removal efficiencies obtained in the aerobic biobarriers or microaerophilia were similar. In addition, slight differences were observed in the presence of GAC as an adsorbent, meaning that the most economical and straightforward type of biobarrier was adequate to remove the pollutants studied. In addition, among the most abundant microorganisms isolated in the microbial biofilms colonizing the aerobic biobarriers, the microalgae Micractinium sp. showed the capacity to accumulate the insecticides permethrin and cypermethrin.

CONCLUSIONS

The main observed role of Micractinium sp. in the aerobic barriers was the bioaccumulation of pyrethroids, meaning that biosorption is also a valuable removal mechanism operating in the aerobic PRBs. In this aspect, they behave analogously to subsurface constructed wetlands but, instead of superficial plant life, aerobic PRSBs host microalgae.

Enhanced removal of NAPL constituent from aquifer during surfactant flushing with aqueous hydraulic barriers of high viscosity

This study examines the effect of controlled groundwater flow paths induced by hydraulic barriers on the removal of NAPL constituent. An aqueous solution of thickener [0.05% (w/v) sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, SCMC] was continuously injected into a horizontally set two-dimensional physical model (sand-packed), forming aqueous plume(s) of high viscosity. The water flux at the down gradient of the model was measured using a flux tracer (n-octanol) and passive flux meter (PFM, packs of granular activated carbon). A non-reactive tracer (pentafluorobenzoic acid, PFBA) was used to identify the plume of high viscosity (hydraulic barrier) and ambient groundwater. When the barrier of high viscosity was formed, the plume was separated from the background water with little mixing, which was confirmed by the concentration profile of PFBA; whereas, the measured flux of ambient groundwater showed a distinctive distribution, due to the hydraulic barrier. When two barriers were set, the ambient water flux was enhanced in the middle, and the removal rate of PCE from the non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL), measured by PFM, was found to improve by 26% during three hours of water flushing. When an aqueous solution of surfactant [0.37% (w/v), sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS] was applied instead of water into the domain with two barriers set around the NAPL-contaminated spot, the removal of PCE from the NAPL increased by 101% for a three-hour time period. Based on the observations made in this study, hydraulic barriers formed by continuous injection of thickener solution change the flow direction of groundwater, and may increase the flux of groundwater (or aqueous solution of remediation agent) through a NAPL-contaminated region, improving the removal of NAPL.
