Airborne mercury pollution from a large oil spill accident on the west coast of Korea

Rational Design of High-Flux, Eco-Friendly, and Versatile Superhydrophobic/Superoleophilic PDMS@ZIF-7/Cu3(PO4)2 Mesh with Self-Cleaning Property for Oil-Water Mixture and Emulsion Separation

In recent years, efficient oil-water separation has gradually become an indispensable part of environmental treatment. Superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials with excellent self-cleaning performance are urgently required and remain challenging in the investigation of practical, rapid, and efficient separation of oil-water mixture and emulsion, especially those with robust surfaces that can be used in harsh conditions. In this work, a novel superhydrophobic/superoleophilic material was first fabricated by in situ constructing PDMS@ZIF-7/Cu₃(PO₄)₂ hierarchical architectures on a copper mesh, which was adopted as a high flux and efficient separation material for gravity-driven separation of oil-water mixture as well as emulsion. The introduction of crucial Cu₃(PO₄)₂ nanosheet interlayers created the ideal hierarchical structures and serve as partial templates for the subsequent in situ growth of hydrophobic ZIF-7 nanosheets. An improved superhydrophobicity (CA = 155°), permeation flux (102,000 L m^-2 h^-1), and preferred self-cleaning property were thus achieved by such manipulation of the copper mesh. The PDMS@ZIF-7/Cu₃(PO₄)₂ mesh exhibited exceptional separation efficiency for diverse oil-water mixtures and emulsions attributed to the superhydrophobicity and the demulsification ability and considerable stability to cope with extreme environments including sunlight resistance, low temperature, and corrosion resistance, which prompted its promising applicability in cleaning emulsified wastewater.

Oil spill identification in X-band marine radar image using K-means and texture feature

Marine oil pollution poses a serious threat to the marine ecological balance. It is of great significance to develop rapid and efficient oil spill detection methods for the mitigation of marine oil spill pollution and the restoration of the marine ecological environment. X-band marine radar is one of the important monitoring devices, in this article, we perform the digital X-band radar image by "Sperry Marine" radar system for an oil film extraction experiment. First, the de-noised image was obtained by preprocessing the original image in the Cartesian coordinate system. Second, it was cut into slices. Third, the texture features of the slices were calculated based on the gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and K-means method to extract the rough oil spill regions. Finally, the oil spill regions were segmented using the Sauvola threshold algorithm. The experimental results indicate that this study provides a scientific method for the research of oil film extraction. Compared with other methods of oil spill extraction in X-band single-polarization marine radar images, the proposed technology is more intelligent, and it can provide technical support for marine oil spill emergency response in the future.

Distribution and environmental geochemical indices of mercury in tar contaminated beaches along the coast of Qatar

The current study aimed to gauge total mercury (THg) concentration and the environmental geochemical indices in tarmat contaminated sediments and test their presence in targeted coastal species. Layers of hard asphalt-like tarmats and sediment samples were collected from 34 sites along the coast of Qatar. The mean concentration of THg in tarmat-sediment mixture is 89 ± 20 ng·g^-1. THg concentration varies significantly between the northern and eastern coasts. Geographically, sampling area were divided into four zones according to the relative closeness with low to serious potential ecological risk index (E_r), moderate pollution load index (PLI), moderate Geoaccumulation index (I_geo), and no toxic risk (TRI) trending as Northern (Zones 4, 3) > North-Eastern (Zone 1) > Western (Zone 2) coasts. Three biota classes (Gastropoda, Bivalvia, and Crustacea) were sampled on the tarmat which the hermit crab (Clibanarius signatus) from Ras Rakan island obtained the highest THg (977 ng·g^-1) and BSAF (29.70).

Mercury Concentrations in Four Marine Fishery Resources from Rio de Janeiro Coast, SW Atlantic, and Potential Human Health Risk Via Fish Consumption

Mercury (Hg) contamination has caused ecological and socioeconomic problems worldwide. One of the main Hg contamination routes by the human populations is through fish ingestion. Herein, we analyzed the total Hg concentrations (THg) in highly consumed marine fish species: Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis, Atlantic bigeye Priacanthus arenatus, Stripped weakfish Cynoscion guatucupa, and Jamaica weakfish C. jamaicensis. The specimens were collected from fishing landings off the Rio de Janeiro, SW Atlantic. Additionally, we calculate the estimated weekly intakes (EWI) and the maximum amount of fish (MAF) that can be safely ingested, both based on the provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI). The highest THg concentrations were recorded in P. brasiliensis with a mean of 340.59 μg/kg (dry weight) and the lowest in P. arenatus (115.75 μg/kg). THg concentrations were positively related to the δ¹⁵N ratios indicating an increase in contamination with trophic level. All samples showed THg concentrations below the established limits by Brazilian and international regulation. Hg intake via human fish consumption does not exceed the PTWI. The EWI varied from 1.41% (P. arenatus size class I) to 11.52% (P. brasiliensis class II) of the PTWI, while the estimated EWI for "fish consumers" varied between 8.35 and 68.07% PTWI. The MAF estimated for an adult (70 kg) could safely consume between 1277.85 and 7075.50 g/week. This study is an important baseline for monitoring and future comparisons. Therefore, it is important to maintain monitoring of mercury levels in fish species in different marine regions, especially those species most consumed by humans.

A durable superwetting clusters-inlayed mesh with high efficiency and flux for emulsion separation

How to rapidly and efficiently separate surfactant-stabilized emulsions has been a great challenge for oil/water separation materials. In this work, a durable superwetting copper mesh with high efficiency and flux for gravity-driven emulsion separation was fabricated by subtly inlaying polydopamine/polyethyleneimine@aminated carbon nanotubes (PDA/PEI@CNTs-NH₂) clusters in the mesh pores. The porous clusters with abundant cationic groups render the mesh with superwettability, submicron permeation channels and positive charges, so as to achieve strong demulsification ability. Based on the superwettability and the strong demulsification ability, the PDA/PEI@CNTs-NH₂ clusters-inlayed copper mesh (PPC-CM) exhibited high separation efficiency of over 99.5% for various anionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions. Meanwhile, the permeation flux of PPC-CM solely driven by gravity is as high as 3946.3 L m^-2 h^-1. The strong demulsification ability and high permeation flux of the superwetting mesh are due to the synergistic action of charge-screening effect of -NH³⁺ and size-sieving effect of optimized pore size. Furthermore, the resultant mesh exhibited excellent durability that it could resist serious physical abrasion and chemical corrosion. Especially the mesh after repeated separation can recover its positive charge by a simple acid treatment. These excellent performances highlight the superwetting mesh a promising potential for sustainable separation of highly stabilized oil/water emulsions.

Ultrafast separation of oil/water mixtures with layered double hydroxide coated stainless steel meshes (LDH-SSMs)

With the frequent discharge of wastewater and leakage of oil accidents, it has gained much attention to treat oil and organic pollutants from water. Herein, a facile and environmentally friendly approach is presented to fabricate MgAlZn layered double hydroxide-coated stainless steel mesh (LDH-SSM) via hydrothermal method, which could be used to separate various oil/water mixtures due to its superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic property. The as-prepared mesh possesses selective separation performance for oil/water mixtures with separation efficiency higher than 99.2% and high water flux of ∼ 44.5 L m^-2 s^-1 under gravity-driven force. Such membrane shows an effective separation for oil/water mixtures and recyclability, as well as exhibit excellent superhydrophilicity, making it a prominent candidate for oily water remediation.

Mercury bioaccumulation in tilefish from the northeastern Gulf of Mexico 2 years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill: Insights from Hg, C, N and S stable isotopes

Mercury (Hg) concentration in fish of the Gulf of the Mexico (GoM) is a major concern due to the importance of the GoM for U.S. fisheries. The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill in April 2010 in the northern GoM resulted in large amounts of oil and dispersant released to the water column, which potentially modified Hg bioaccumulation patterns in affected areas. We measured Hg species (methylmercury (MMHg) and inorganic Hg (IHg)) concentrations, and light (C, N and S) and Hg stable isotopes in muscle and liver tissues from tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaleonticeps) sampled in 2012 and 2013 along the shelf break of the northeastern GoM. Fish located close to the mouth of the Mississippi River (MR) and northwest of the DWH well-head (47 km) showed significantly lower Hg levels in muscle and liver than fish located further northeast of the DWH (>109 km), where 98% of tilefish had Hg levels in the muscle above US consumption advisory thresholds (50% for tilefish close to the DWH). Differences in light and Hg stable isotopes signatures were observed between these two areas, showing higher δ¹⁵N, and lower δ²⁰²Hg, Δ¹⁹⁹Hg and δ³⁴S in fish close to the DWH/MR. This suggests that suspended particles from the MR reduces Hg bioavailability at the base of the GoM food chains. This phenomenon can be locally enhanced by the DWH that resulted in increased particles in the water column as evidenced by the marine snow layer in the sediments. On the other hand, freshly deposited Hg associated with organic matter in more oligotrophic marine waters enhanced Hg bioaccumulation in local food webs. Comparing Hg isotopic composition in liver and muscle of fish indicates specific metabolic response in fish having accumulated high levels of MMHg.

A new perspective of particle adsorption: Dispersed oil and granular materials interactions in simulated coastal environment

This study, adsorption behaviors of dispersed oil in seawaters by granular materials were explored in simulation environment. We quantitatively demonstrated the dispersed oil adsorbed by granular materials were both dissolved petroleum hydrocarbons (DPHs) and oil droplets. Furthermore, DPHs were accounted for 42.5%, 63.4%, and 85.2% (35.5% was emulsion adsorption) in the adsorption of dispersed oil by coastal rocks, sediments, and bacterial strain particles respectively. Effects of controlling parameters, such as temperature, particle size and concentration on adsorption of petroleum hydrocarbons were described in detail. Most strikingly, adsorption concentration was followed a decreasing order of bacterial strain (0.5-2μm)>sediments (0.005-0.625mm)>coastal rocks (0.2-1cm). With particle concentration or temperature increased, adsorption concentration increased for coastal rocks particle but decreased for sediments particle. Besides, particle adsorption rate of petroleum hydrocarbons (n-alkanes and PAHs) was different among granular materials during 60 days.

Mercury concentrations in urine of amerindian populations near oil fields in the peruvian and ecuadorian amazon

BACKGROUND

Mercury is a global contaminant with toxic, persistent effects on human health. Petroleum extraction is an important source of elemental mercury; little is known about human exposure levels near oil fields in the Amazon basin.

OBJECTIVES

To characterize mercury levels in people living near oil production sites in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Amazon, controlling for fish consumption, occupation, source of water and socio-demographic characteristics.

METHODS

Analyze mercury levels in urine samples using cold vapour atomic fluorescence spectrometry from 76 indigenous men and women in eight riverine communities situated near oil wells or pipelines. Subjects answered a questionnaire soliciting socio-demographic, occupational and dietary information. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression modeling.

RESULTS

The mean value of U-Hg was 2.61μg/g creatinine (95% CI: 2.14-3.08), with 7% of the sample recording values above the global background standard suggested by The World Health Organization (5μg/g creatinine). Women who used water from a surface source had two and a half times the amount of mercury in their urine (mean=3.70μg/g creatinine, 95% CI: 2.26-5.15) compared with women who used other water sources (mean =1.39μg/g creatinine, 95% CI: 0.51-2.25). Men who were involved in an oil clean-up operation had twice as much mercury in their urine (mean =3.07μg/g creatinine, 95% CI: 1.97-4.16) as did those who worked on other tasks (mean =1.56μg/g creatinine, 95% CI: 1.48-2.65). Mercury levels were not associated with the number of fish meals per week.

CONCLUSIONS

Indigenous peoples of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Amazon living near oil production sites generally had urine mercury levels within the global background standard suggested by the World Health Organization. Increased levels of mercury in urine were detected for men involved in oil spill remediation and for women who relied on surface water for household needs. These findings signal the need for strict safety measures to limit the amount of oil entering the waterways in Andean Amazonia so as to protect the health of indigenous people.

A review of seafood safety after the deepwater horizon blowout

BACKGROUND

The Deepwater Horizon (DH) blowout resulted in fisheries closings across the Gulf of Mexico. Federal agencies, in collaboration with impacted Gulf states, developed a protocol to determine when it is safe to reopen fisheries based on sensory and chemical analyses of seafood. All federal waters have been reopened, yet concerns have been raised regarding the robustness of the protocol to identify all potential harmful exposures and protect the most sensitive populations.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to assess this protocol based on comparisons with previous oil spills, published testing results, and current knowledge regarding chemicals released during the DH oil spill.

METHODS

We performed a comprehensive review of relevant scientific journal articles and government documents concerning seafood contamination and oil spills and consulted with academic and government experts.

RESULTS

Protocols to evaluate seafood safety before reopening fisheries have relied on risk assessment of health impacts from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposures, but metal contamination may also be a concern. Assumptions used to determine levels of concern (LOCs) after oil spills have not been consistent across risk assessments performed after oil spills. Chemical testing results after the DH oil spill suggest PAH levels are at or below levels reported after previous oil spills, and well below LOCs, even when more conservative parameters are used to estimate risk.

CONCLUSIONS

We recommend use of a range of plausible risk parameters to set bounds around LOCs, comparisons of post-spill measurements with baseline levels, and the development and implementation of long-term monitoring strategies for metals as well as PAHs and dispersant components. In addition, the methods, results, and uncertainties associated with estimating seafood safety after oil spills should be communicated in a transparent and timely manner, and stakeholders should be actively involved in developing a long-term monitoring strategy.
