Selective removal for Pb2+ in aqueous environment by using novel macroreticular PVA beads

Fe3O4/Graphene Oxide/Chitosan Nanocomposite: A Smart Nanosorbent for Lead(II) Ion Removal from Contaminated Water

A new graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite that contains chitosan, a biological polymer, combined with a magnetic nanoparticle inorganic material (Fe3O4) was successfully prepared and applied for the adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The structural and morphological properties of the GO/Fe3O4/CS (GFC) nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Influent factors for Pb(II) adsorption, including the contacting time, pH of the working medium, working temperature, and adsorbent dosage on the adsorption efficiency, have been optimized. Under optimized conditions, the adsorption isotherm results indicated that the Langmuir model provided a better description for the adsorption of Pb(II) onto the GFC nanosorbent than the Freundlich model. The maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 63.45 mg g-1. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) was fitted with the experimental results, implying that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto GFC is a chemical process. The thermodynamic studies demonstrated the exothermic nature of the adsorption process. Another advantage of the GFC nanosorbent for Pb(II) removal is its capability to be easily recovered under the use of an external magnet and subsequently regenerated. Our work demonstrated that the removal efficiency was stable after several regeneration cycles (i.e., approximately 12% reduction after four successive adsorption-desorption cycles), implying that the GFC nanosorbent exhibits satisfactory regeneration performance. Therefore, with high removal efficiency, high adsorption capacity, and stable reusability, the GFC nanocomposite is a remarkable application potential adsorbent for the in situ treatment of Pb(II) ion-containing aqueous solutions.

Highly Efficient Cationic/Anionic Cellulose Membranes for Removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) Ions

To achieve high throughput, low-pressure drops, and high adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) in industrial wastewater treatment, cellulose membranes containing cationic and anionic groups were fabricated, respectively. In this process, cost-effective cotton fabrics were oxidized using sodium periodate, followed by quaternary ammonium or sulfonation modifications. The chemical composition, surface morphology, and thermal and mechanical properties of the cellulose membranes were investigated by ATR-FTIR, solid-state NMR, SEM, TGA, and tensile experiments. Quaternary ammonium, aldehyde, and sulfonate groups were distributed on the cationic/anionic cellulose fibers as adsorption sites, which issue remarkable adsorption capability to the cellulose membranes. The highly toxic Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions were used to challenge the adsorption capacity of the cationic and anionic cellulose membranes, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) ions were 61.7 and 63.7 mg/g, respectively, suggested by Langmuir isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics in the static experiments. The dynamic adsorption capability of cationic cellulose membranes against Cr(VI) ions was determined and compared with that of commercially available anionic-exchange membranes. Spiral wound filtration cartridges were fabricated by cationic and anionic cellulose membranes, respectively, and were used to adsorb Cr(VI) and Pb(II) from lab-made wastewater, respectively. The cationic cellulose cartridge can purify 4.4 L of wastewater containing 1.0 mg/L of Cr(VI) ions with a 100% removal ratio, while the pressure drop was retained at 246 Pa. Similarly, the anionic cellulose cartridge exhibited even more impressive adsorption capability; the removal ratio against Pb(II) was 99% when 8.6 L of 1.0 mg/L of Pb(II) ions containing wastewater was treated, and the pressure drop was retained at 234 Pa. A composite cartridge fabricated by the integration of cationic and anionic cellulose membranes was successfully employed to purify the wastewater containing Cr(VI) and Pb(II) simultaneously. The possible adsorption mechanism was proposed, and the recycling ability of the cellulose membranes was also discussed.

Pb2+-imprinted thermosensitive antibacterial adsorbent derived from sodium alginate and PNIPAM for Pb2+ recovery

Two sodium alginate-based Pb²⁺-imprinted thermosensitive hydrogels (SPIT (without ɛ-PL) and SPPIT (with ɛ-PL)) were synthesized, with sodium alginate and ɛ-polylysine (ɛ-PL) as the matrix, N-isopropylacrylamide as the monomer. Characterization with differential scanning calorimeter, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analyzer, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the aimed structure of the hydrogels. The adsorption capacity of SPIT and SPPIT for Pb²⁺ was 98.64 mg/g and 153.49 mg/g, respectively. Washing the Pb²⁺-loaded adsorbent with 10 °C deionized water, SPIT and SPPIT achieved a desorption efficiency of 94.59 % and 97.51 %, respectively. After 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption process, the adsorption capacity and desorption efficiency remained at about 80-88 % of the original ones, expressing excellent reusability. In a mixture containing eight metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Fe³⁺), the adsorption capacity of SPIT to Pb²⁺ was 92.49 mg/g, and that of SPPIT was 102.49 mg/g, much higher than that to the other ions (1.50-11.38 mg/g on SPIT, 9.48-27.45 mg/g on SPPIT), showing excellent adsorption selectivity. The introduction of ɛ-PL enhanced the adsorption capacity, antibacterial ability and stability of the hydrogel, ensuring better application potential in real wastewater.

Ultrafast and efficient removal of Pb(II) from acidic aqueous solution using a novel polyvinyl alcohol superabsorbent

The direct removal of heavy metal ions from acidic wastewater is a hard problem. In this study, a novel superabsorbent, polyvinyl alcohol phosphate ester (PVAP), was designed and prepared to remove Pb(II) from acidic wastewater (pH = 3). The PVAP can absorb water and swell to reach equilibrium within 30 s, which provides the conditions for ultrafast kinetic adsorption. For 100 mg/L Pb(II) solution, the adsorption reaches equilibrium within 5 min, and the removal ratio is more than 99.9% over a wide pH range of 3-6. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm data are consistent with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model, respectively. The calculated maximum adsorption capacity for Pb(II) is 558.66 mg/g. Thermodynamic results show that the adsorption is spontaneous and exothermic process. The removal ratio for Pb(II) of PVAP still maintains above 99% after ten recycles. The PVAP can also simultaneously remove more than 97% of other heavy metal ions (Cu(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Co(II), and Ni(II)) from an acidic solution. Moreover, the PVAP can efficiently purify simulated acid mine heavy metal wastewater, and the results meet EPA drinking water standards. The studies of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy prove that the adsorption mechanism involves surface complexation. This new superabsorbent is a promising candidate for acidic heavy metal sewage disposal.

Chitosan Functionalized with 2-Methylpyridine Cross-Linker Cellulose to Adsorb Pb(II) from Water

In this study, chitosan was chemically modified with 2-methylpyridine. Subsequently, the modified chitosan was cross-linked to cellulose using succinic anhydride. Additionally, the capacity of cellulose derivatives to adsorb Pb(II) ions in an aqueous solution was studied through the determination of Pb(II) ions concentration in water, using microwave plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (MP-AES). A maximum adsorption capacity of 6.62, 43.14, 60.6, and 80.26 mg/g was found for cellulose, cellulose-succinic acid, cellulose-chitosan, and cellulose-chitosan-pyridine, respectively. The kinetic data analysis of the adsorption process showed a pseudo-second-order behavior. The increase in metal removal from water is possibly due to metal chelation with the carbonyl group of succinic acid, and the pyridine groups incorporated into chitosan.

Controlled Release of Phosphorus from Superabsorbent Phosphate-Bound Alginate-Graft-Polyacrylamide: Resistance to Soil Cations and Release Mechanism

Two controlled-released fertilizers of phosphorylated alginate grafted with polyacrylamide (P-Alg-g-PAM) were synthesized. Monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and diammonium phosphate (DAP) were reacted with a matrix of sodium alginate (Alg) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The phosphorylated matrix was then grafted with acrylamide. The obtained fertilizer materials showed excellent water absorbance. The controlled-release behavior of phosphorylated alginate grafted with polyacrylamide (P-Alg-g-PAM) was investigated at normal pH and 25 °C. The fertilizer materials exhibited release of phosphorus up to 77% for the MAP sample and up to 57% for the DAP sample till the forty fifth day of the application at pH 7 and 25 °C. More importantly, when the release experiments were conducted in calcium chloride medium, the fertilizers were able to release phosphorus efficiently with slight decrease until the forty fifth day of the application, suggesting that the presence of Alg in the fertilizer formulation may help in extending the duration for which phosphorus is available to the plant.

Preparation of PVA/tetra-ZnO composite with framework-supported pore-channel structure and the removal research of lead ions

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) filled with different kinds of ZnO whisker was prepared by chemical cross-linking reaction. It was found that the ZnO whiskers dispersed uniformly after being modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). The PVA/tetrapod-shaped ZnO (PVA/tetra-ZnO) composites showed better adsorption performance than other kinds of PVA/ZnO composites. The framework-supported pore-channel structure was beneficial for the transmission and adsorption of heavy metal ions, and the formation of "brush" pore-channel of PVA/tetra-ZnO composites can effectively retain and capture the heavy metal ions. The PVA/tetra-ZnO composites presented well adsorption on Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) ions than Ni(II) and showed relatively selective removal on Pb(II) and Cr(III) ions. The adsorbed heavy metal ions presented gradient distribution with high content in the out layer and low content in the inner layer. Pb(II) adsorption capacity q_e increased gradually with the increase of initial solution concentration and contact time which tended to be stable at 400 mg/L and 800 min. The maximal adsorption capacity q_m obtained by nonlinear fitting reached to about 116 mg/g which was very close to the experiment data. Adsorption isotherm results indicated the monolayer adsorption process of the Langmuir model and the adsorption kinetics data fitted well to the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption process was spontaneous and the high temperature was in favor of adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was explored as the combination of coordination and ion exchange. Besides, the PVA/tetra-ZnO composites exhibited better stress stability, thermo stability, and favorable regeneration than neat PVA.

Selective adsorption of bilirubin against albumin to alkylamine functionalized PVA microspheres

Adsorbents are widely used in hemoperfusion for bilirubin removal. However, their performance is often compromised by the presence of plasma proteins. In this study, the bilirubin adsorption capacity of polyvinyl alcohol microspheres (PVAm) functionalized with different amino-alkane ligands has been investigated, with the aim of gaining binding selectivity over albumin. Octylamine-functionalized PVA microspheres (PVAm-8) exhibited an excellent adsorption capacity for bilirubin (75% and 3.95 mg/mL in PBS vs 72% and 3.84 mg/mL in albumin solution) when compared to the clinical adsorbent BPR (92% and 4.84 mg/mL in PBS vs 71%, and 3.80 mg/mL in albumin solution). The bilirubin adsorption capacities of PVAm-8 were largely unaffected by the presence of albumin. Adsorption of bilirubin to PVAm-8 occurs mainly through hydrophobic effects, with adsorption consistent with the monolayer model and the pseudo-first-order model operating in both PBS and albumin solution. The effects of PVAm-8 on hemolytic activity, blood component stability and coagulant activity were negligible, indicating that PVAm-8 has good potential as a high-affinity bilirubin adsorbent for hemoperfusion applications.

Amphiphilic polyvinyl alcohol adsorbent for the removal of low-density lipoprotein

Spacer can effectively reduce the steric hindrance and synergistic effect of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic ligands immobilized in adsorbents can improve the specific adsorption for low-density lipoprotein (LDL). In this paper, in order to improve the adsorption capacity for the Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), specifically, amphiphilic adsorbent based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing cholesterol ligand and sulfonic dextran ligands was synthesized. All kinds of factors affecting the synthesis yield and adsorption properties were studied in detail. Results showed that the amphiphilic PVA adsorbent has higher adsorption capacity for total cholesterol (TC), (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), and lower adsorption capacity, and percentage for high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), while the ligand ratio of cholesterol to sulfonic ligands is 1.57:1, the adsorption percentage and adsorption capacity for TC, LDL-C, TG, and HDL-C were 54.4%, 67.6%, 42.5%, 10.4% and 4.02, 3.612, 2.154, 0.168 mg/g, respectively.

One-step fabrication of functionalized magnetic adsorbents with large surface area and their adsorption for dye and heavy metal ions

Functionalized magnetic adsorbents were synthesized by a facile and surfactant-free one-pot solvothermal approach, using iron(iii) chloride hexahydrate as precursor, ethylene glycol as reducing agent, ammonium acetate, and EDTA-2Na as electrostatic stabilization agent.

A novel approach for removing 2-naphthol from wastewater using immobilized organo-bentonite

The major concern limiting the industrial application of organo-bentonite in powder form (P-Bent) for wastewater treatment is that it is difficult to separate it from treated water by settlement. To address this problem, a novel approach for synthesizing immobilized organo-bentonite in globular form (G-Bent) is proposed. The G-Bent is modified using the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and immobilized by polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The removal of 2-naphthol by G-Bent was compared with removal by P-Bent for solid/liquid separation, removal efficiency and desorption of the modifier used in its preparation. Results indicated that G-Bent was easy to recover from treated wastewater, and was effective and reusable in removing 2-naphthol. The percentage of 2-naphthol removed by G-Bent exceeded 90% with the cationic exchange capacity (CEC) loadings ranging from 100% to 150%. This was almost equivalent to the results obtained using P-Bent. In the five rounds of reuse examined, the percentage of 2-naphthol removed was maintained above 50% for 150%-G-Bent. The percentage of CPC desorption was less than 0.75% after five rounds of reuse and no PVA was detected. The results of this work provide novel information for using G-Bent in the treatment of wastewater containing organic contaminants.

Chemically modified polymer beads for sorption of gold from waste gold solution

A simple method to convert gold from waste gold solutions used in chemical laboratories and chemical industries into metallic gold nano particles using styrene maleic acid copolymer beads has been approached. The styrene maleic acid copolymer beads with an average bead diameter 400-600 microns, exhibiting exceptionally high rough surface was used as a polymer matrix for the reducing gold from aqueous solution to metallic nano gold. Uptake of gold ions from aqueous waste gold solution was attempted in a batch process. Conversion of gold to metallic nano gold was achieved without the use of any external reducing agents. The metallic nano gold particles could be embedded into polymer matrix within 2h. The beads exhibited high temperature resistance and could sustain upto 400°C.

Preparation and characterization of immobilized [A336][MTBA] in PVA-alginate gel beads as novel solid-phase extractants for an efficient recovery of Hg (II) from aqueous solutions

The coarse PVA-alginate matrix gel beads entrapping the micro-droplets of the ionic liquid tricaprylylmethylammonium 2-(methylthio) benzoate ([A336][MTBA]) as novel solid-phase extractants were prepared for the removal of mercury (II) from aqueous media. The ionic liquid [A336][MTBA] immobilized PVA-alginate beads (PVA/IL) have been characterized by FTIR, SEM and TGA. The influence of the uptake conditions was investigated including aqueous pH, PVA/IL dosage, the content of [A336][MTBA] and initial Hg (II) concentration; maximum Hg (II) ion adsorption capacity obtained was 49.89 (± 0.11)mgg(-1) at pH 5.8 with adsorptive removal of approximately 99.98%. The selectivity of the PVA/IL beads towards Hg (II), Pb (II) and Cu (II) ions tested was Hg>Pb>Cu. The rate kinetic study was found to follow second-order and the applicability of Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption isotherm model were tested as well. The results of the study showed that PVA/IL beads could be efficiently used as novel extractants for the removal of divalent mercury from aqueous solutions under comparatively easy operation conditions.
