Silver Halide-Based Nanomaterials in Biomedical Applications and Biosensing Diagnostics

In recent years, silver halide (AgX, X = Cl, Br, I)-based photocatalytic materials have received increasing research attention owing to their excellent visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for applications in organic pollutant degradation, HER, OER, and biomedical engineering. Ag as a noble metal has a surface plasma effect and can form Schottky junctions with AgX, which significantly promotes electron transport and increases photocatalytic efficiency. Therefore, Ag/AgX can reduce the recombination rate of electrons and holes more than pure AgX, leading to using AgX as a photocatalytic material in biomedical applications. The use of AgX-based materials in photocatalytic fields can be classified into three categories: AgX (Ag/AgX), AgX composites, and supported AgX materials. In this review, we introduce recent developments made in biomedical applications and biosensing diagnostics of AgX (Ag/AgX) photocatalytic materials. In addition, this review also discusses the photocatalytic mechanism and applications of AgX (Ag/AgX) and supported AgX materials.

Targeted drug delivery in cervical cancer: Current perspectives

Cervical cancer is preventable yet one of the most prevalent cancers among women around the globe. Though regular screening has resulted in the decline in incidence, the disease claims a high number of lives every year, especially in the developing countries. Owing to rather aggressive and non-specific nature of the conventional chemotherapeutics, there is a growing need for newer treatment modalities. The advent of nanotechnology has assisted in this through the use of nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery. A number of nanocarriers are continuously being developed and studied for their application in drug delivery. The present review summarises the different drug delivery approaches and nanocarriers that can be useful, their advantages and limitation.

Morphology-Governed Performance of Plasmonic Photocatalysts

Plasmonic photocatalysts have been extensively studied for the past decade as a possible solution to energy crisis and environmental problems. Although various reports on plasmonic photocatalysts have been published, including synthesis methods, applications, and mechanism clarifications, the quantum yields of photochemical reactions are usually too low for commercialization. Accordingly, it has been proposed that preparation of plasmonic photocatalysts with efficient light harvesting and inhibition of charge carriers’ recombination might result in improvement of photocatalytic activity. Among various strategies, nano-architecture of plasmonic photocatalysts seems to be one of the best strategies, including the design of properties for both semiconductor and noble-metal-deposits, as well as the interactions between them. For example, faceted nanoparticles, nanotubes, aerogels, and super-nano structures of semiconductors have shown the improvement of photocatalytic activity and stability. Moreover, the selective deposition of noble metals on some parts of semiconductor nanostructures (e.g., specific facets, basal or lateral surfaces) results in an activity increase. Additionally, mono-, bi-, and ternary-metal-modifications have been proposed as the other ways of performance improvement. However, in some cases, the interactions between different noble metals might cause unwanted charge carriers’ recombination. Accordingly, this review discusses the recent strategies on the improvements of the photocatalytic performance of plasmonic photocatalysts.

Plasmonic Photocatalysts for Microbiological Applications

Wide-bandgap semiconductors modified with nanostructures of noble metals for photocatalytic activity under vis irradiation due to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), known as plasmonic photocatalysts, have been intensively investigated over the last decade. Most literature reports discuss the properties and activities of plasmonic photocatalysts for the decomposition of organic compounds and solar energy conversion. Although noble metals, especially silver and copper, have been known since ancient times as excellent antimicrobial agents, there are only limited studies on plasmonic photocatalysts for the inactivation of microorganisms (considering vis-excitation). Accordingly, this review has discussed the available literature reports on microbiological applications of plasmonic photocatalysis, including antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties, and also a novel study on other microbiological purposes, such as cancer treatment and drug delivery. Although some reports indicate high antimicrobial properties of these photocatalysts and their potential for medical/pharmaceutical applications, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies on the mechanism of their interactions with microbiological samples. Moreover, contradictory data have also been published, and thus more study is necessary for the final conclusions on the key-factor properties and the mechanisms of inactivation of microorganisms and the treatment of cancer cells.

Ag/AgFeO2: An Outstanding Magnetically Responsive Photocatalyst for HeLa Cell Eradication

A superfast, room-temperature, one-step carrier-solvent-assisted interfacial reaction process was developed to prepare Ag/AgFeO2 composite nanocrystals (NCs) of less than 10 nm in size within a 1 min reaction time. These composite NCs were with a direct energy band gap of 2.0 eV and were paramagnetic, making them suitable for optical activation and magnetic manipulation. These composite NCs, applied as a photocatalyst for the treatment of HeLa cells, achieved a significant reduction of 74% in cell viability within 30 min. These Ag/AgFeO2 composite NCs proved to be a promising magnetically guidable photocatalyst for cancer cell treatment.

A novel AgI/BiOIO3 nanohybrid with improved visible-light photocatalytic activity

AgI/BiOIO₃ nanohybrid photocatalysts were prepared by a successive hydrothermal-deposition process. The visible-light-driven AgI/BiOIO₃ showed excellent photocatalytic activity.

Chemical degradation of proteins in the solid state with a focus on photochemical reactions

Protein pharmaceuticals comprise an increasing fraction of marketed products but the limited solution stability of proteins requires considerable research effort to prepare stable formulations. An alternative is solid formulation, as proteins in the solid state are thermodynamically less susceptible to degradation. Nevertheless, within the time of storage a large panel of kinetically controlled degradation reactions can occur such as, e.g., hydrolysis reactions, the formation of diketopiperazine, condensation and aggregation reactions. These mechanisms of degradation in protein solids are relatively well covered by the literature. Considerably less is known about oxidative and photochemical reactions of solid proteins. This review will provide an overview over photolytic and non-photolytic degradation reactions, and specially emphasize mechanistic details on how solid structure may affect the interaction of protein solids with light.

Cell-imprinted antimicrobial bionanomaterials with tolerable toxic side effects

Taking advantage of imprinting technology, artificial antibody-microbial imprinted Ag-TiO(2) materials are fabricated for microbial inactivation using a facile and green method. Due to the induced shape and size recognition elements, the artificial antibodies specifically recognize and kill target microbes under visible-light irradiation with minimal toxic side effects toward mammalian cells.

Advanced nanoarchitectures of silver/silver compound composites for photochemical reactions

Silver/silver compound (SSC) composites have received much attention as a type of potential materials in photochemical reactions due to their high efficiency, facile syntheses and availability of raw materials. This article reviews the state-of-the-art progress on the advanced nanoarchitectures of SSC composites. We begin with a survey on the general synthetic strategies for SSC composites, and then step into relatively detailed methods for size and morphology tunable two-component and more delicate multi-component SSC nanostructures. In addition, the electronic structure-related mechanisms of such materials and the recent studies on their stability are summarized. This review also highlights some perspectives on challenges related to the SSC composites and the possible research in the future.

High temperature heat source generation with quasi-continuous wave semiconductor lasers at power levels of 6 W for medical use

We investigate a technology to create a high temperature heat source on the tip surface of the glass fiber proposed for medical surgery applications. Using 4 to 6 W power level semiconductor lasers at a wavelength of 980 nm, a laser coupled fiber tip was preprocessed to contain a certain amount of titanium oxide powder with a depth of 100 μm from the tip surface so that the irradiated low laser energy could be perfectly absorbed to be transferred to thermal energy. Thus, the laser treatment can be performed without suffering from any optical characteristic of the material. A semiconductor laser was operated quasi-continuous wave mode pulse time duration of 180 ms and >95% of the laser energy was converted to thermal energy in the fiber tip. Based on two-color thermometry, by using a gated optical multichannel analyzer with a 0.25 m spectrometer in visible wavelength region, the temperature of the fiber tip was analyzed. The temperature of the heat source was measured to be in excess 3100 K.
