Abstract
Nitrite (NO2-) is widely used as an additive to extend the shelf life of food products. Excessive nitrite intake not only causes blood-related diseases but also has the potential risk of causing cancers. A disposable screen-printed electrode was modified with nano‑palladium decorated bismuth sulfide microspheres (nanoPd@Bi2S3MS/SPE), and integrated with a smartphone-interfaced potentiostat to develop a portable, electrochemical nitrite sensor. NanoPd@Bi2S3MS was prepared by the hydrothermal reduction of a Bi2S3MS and Pd2+ dispersion and drop cast on the SPE. The nanoPd@Bi2S3MS/SPE was coupled with a smartphone-controlled portable potentiostat and applied to determine nitrite in food samples. The linear range of the sensor was 0.01-500 μM and the limit of detection was 0.0033 μM. The proposed system showed good repeatability, reproducibility, catalytic stability, and immunity to interferences. The proposed electrode material and a smartphone-based small potentiostat created a simple, portable, fast electrochemical sensing system that accurately measured nitrite in food samples.

Abstract
In this work, we constructed an enhanced electrochemical signal sensing platform using Au/ZnO nanoflake arrays coated on carbon cloth for the rapid detection of nitrite in food. Based on a stepwise synthesis strategy of electrodeposition and magnetron sputtering technique, AuNPs were sputtered onto ZnO nanoflower-like array sheets. Combining the high catalytic performance of AuNPs with the morphology of ZnO significantly increased the surface area and electrocatalytic activity of the electrodes. The prepared sensor showed a linear response range of 0.2-4986 μΜ, a limit of detection of 0.09 μM, and a high sensitivity of 5677 μA mM-1 cm-2. It is worth noting that the sensor can precisely detect nitrite in the presence of interfering substances and has excellent stability and reproducibility. In addition, the nitrite residues in several food samples were analyzed using this method and spectrophotometric method, and the results of the two methods were not significantly different.

Abstract
A novel cyclic ion chromatography (IC) system was developed for the simultaneous determination of trace disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. Five DBPs (chlorite, bromate, chlorate, dichloroacetic acid, and trichloroacetic acid) were sensitively determined by large-volume direct injection, and the interferences of dominant inorganic anions present in water were eliminated online through the cyclic determination of the target analytes. Under optimized conditions, the obtained limits of detection (LODs) were in the range of 0.18-1.91 μg L-1 based on a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3 and an injection volume of 1.0 mL. The RSDs for peak area and retention time were in the range of 0.13-1.03% and 1.24-4.29%, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries between 92.3% and 106.4% were obtained by adding three concentration gradients of standards to the drinking water samples. The proposed method has advantages such as high sensitivity, facile automation, and no sample pretreatment, and might be a promising approach for routine analysis.

Abstract
A triple-mode colorimetric and fluorescent sensing scheme based on manganese dioxide nanoparticles (MnO2NPs) and carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were developed to determine nitrite. MnO2NPs can oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue oxidation product (TMBox), which is further oxidized into a yellow diimine derivative by nitrite. The ratio of absorbance at 652 nm to 452 nm was monitored as signal response for UV-vis detection mode. A "turn-off" CQDs fluorescence probe was also constructed for fluorescent detection mode. Smartphone tool kit was used to capture the color of sample for smartphone-based measurement. Various analytical performance under different detection modes were obtained and compared. The proposed methods were applied to food samples with satisfactory recoveries (83.3-106 %). The results were validated with AOAC standard spectrophotometric method. The current triple-mode detection were accurate, convenient, low-cost and fast for analyzing nitrite in foods and water samples on-site.

Abstract
Ion chromatography (IC) has grown in usage rapidly since its first introduction in 1975. However, IC is still sometimes unable to separate target analytes from coexisting components well with identical elution time, due to the limited resolution and column capacity, especially in the presence of high-level salt matrix. These limitations hence drive IC to develop two-dimensional IC (2D-IC). In this review, we capture the 2D-IC applications in environmental samples via the perspective of coupling different IC columns, which aim to summarize where these 2D-IC methods fit in. In sequence, we firstly review the principles of 2D-IC and emphasize one-pump column-switching IC (OPCS IC) because it is a simplified 2D-IC that only uses one set of IC system. We then compare typical 2D-IC and OPCS IC performances in terms of application scope, method detection limit, drawbacks, and expectations. Finally, we propose some challenges of current methods and opportunities for future research. For instance, it is challenging to couple anion exchange column and capillary column in OPCS IC due to the incompatibility between flow path dimensions and suppressor; coupling ion exclusion column and mixed-bed column may be promising to simultaneously determine anions and cations in weak acids or salts. The details of this study may help practitioners to better understand and implement 2D-IC methods and meanwhile motivate researchers to fill in the knowledge gap in the future.

Abstract
A simple, rapid, and environmentally-friendly spectrophotometric method for nitrite detection was developed. Detection was based on a redox reaction with iodide ions in an acidic condition. The reaction was evaluated by detecting the increase in absorbance of the colored product of iodine at 362 nm wavelength. To obtain a good spectrophotometric performance, the iodide ions concentration, hydrochloric acid concentration, and reaction time were optimized. In the optimal condition, the developed spectrophotometric method provided a linear range of 0.0625 to 4.00 mg L−1 (r = 0.9985), reaction time for 10 min, a limit of detection of 25 µg L−1, and a limit of quantitation of 85 µg L−1. This method showed good repeatability (RSD < 9.21%), high sample throughput (9 samples min−1), and good accuracy (recovery = 88 ± 2 to 99.5 ± 0.4%). The method has the potential to be used in crime scene investigations as a rapid screening test for gunshot residue detection via nitrite detection.

Abstract
When nitrite is ingested and absorbed by the body, it can be converted into highly toxic nitrosamines (carcinogens, teratogens, and mutagens), posing health risks to the general population. Therefore, it calls for establishing a method for determination of nitrite. In this paper, the glass-SiO2-Ag surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with a large number of "hot spots" were prepared by two kinds of silane coupling agents. The SERS substrate had high sensitivity and repeatability. Silicon dioxide supported the silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which increased surface roughness of the substrate, generated a great quantity of hot spots and enhanced the SERS signal. In the SERS spectrum, the intensity ratio of the two characteristic peaks (1287 cm-1 and 1076 cm-1) had a good linear correlation with the logarithm of the concentration of nitrite, R2 = 0.9652. The recoveries of 50 μM and 100 μM nitrite in three kinds of foods, three kinds of cosmetics and tap water were 90.9-105.3%.

Abstract
Large uptakes of nitrite have been proven to be detrimental to human health, therefore, the development of high-performance nitrite sensors is highly emergent. Herein, a carbon selenide nanofilms modified carbon fiber cloth (CSe2 NF/CC) electrode was obtained via in-situ synthesis to detect nitrite. The electrode integrates the collective merits of macroporous CC and pleated carbon selenide nanofilms, possessing a low overpotential of 0.83 V, a high electrochemical active surface area (EASA) of 5.39 cm2, great electrical conductivity, and fast charge transport as well as ion diffusion. The proposed electrode achieved a low limit of detection of 0.04 μmol L-1 (S/N = 3), a high sensitivity of 2048.56 μA mmol L-1 cm-2, excellent selectivity, and long-term stability. Additionally, the CSe2 NF/CC was successfully used for nitrite detection in different food samples such as pickled vegetables and sausage samples.

Abstract
A microfluidic-capillary-waveguide-coupled fiber-optic sensor was developed for colorimetric determination of hazardous nitrite based on the Griess-Ilosvay reaction. The sensor was modularly designed by use of a light-emitting diode as the light source, silica fiber as the light transmission element, and a capillary waveguide tube as the light reaction flow cell. With the light interacting with the azo dye generated by the Griess-Ilosvay reaction between nitrite and Griess reagents, nitrite could be determined by a colorimetric method according to Beer's law. By use of the inexpensive and micro-sized elements mentioned above, the sensor provided a new low-cost and portable method for in situ and online measurement of nitrite. The sensor had a wide linear range for nitrite from 0.02 to 1.8 mg L(-1) and a low detection limit of 7 μg L(-1) (3σ), with a relative standard deviation of 0.37% (n = 10). With a low reagent demand of 200 μL, a short response time of 6.24 s, and excellent selectivity, the sensor is environmentally friendly and has been applied to nitrite determination in different water samples. The results were compared with those obtained by conventional spectrophotometry and ion chromatography, indicating the sensor's potential for practical applications.

Abstract
A microliter dead-volume flow-through cell as a potentiometric detector is described in this article for sensitive, selective and simultaneous detection of common monovalent anions and cations in single column ion chromatography for the first time. The detection cell consisted of less selective anion- and cation-selective composite membrane electrodes together with a solid-state composite matrix reference electrode. The simultaneous separation and sensitive detection of sodium (Na(+)), potassium (K(+)), ammonium (NH4 (+)), chloride (Cl(-)) and nitrate (NO3 (-)) in a single run was achieved by using 98% 1.5 mM MgSO4 and 2% acetonitrile eluent with a mixed-bed ion-exchange separation column without suppressor column system. The separation and simultaneous detection of the anions and cations were completed in 6 min at the eluent flow-rate of 0.8 mL/min. Detection limits, at S/N = 3, were ranged from 0.2 to 1.0 µM for the anions and 0.3 to 3.0 µM for the cations, respectively. The developed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of monovalent anions and cations in several environmental and biological samples.
