Kinetics of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) reactions with H₂SO₄, HNO₃ and HCl: implication for hydrometallurgy of electronic wastes

Thin-layer chromatography coupled with HPLC-DAD/UHPLC-HRMS for target and non-target determination of emerging halogenated organic contaminants in animal-derived foods

In this study, a simple, solvent-saving, and sensitive method was established using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry to quantitively determine 16 emerging halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs), including polyhalogenated carbazoles, halogenated phenols, and tetrabromobisphenol-A analogs, and to qualitatively identify non-target HOCs in animal-derived food samples. The sample extracts were physically frozen to remove most lipids and further purified by thin-layer chromatography according to the targets polarity. The method detection limit and method quantification limit of 16 HOCs were in the range of 0.003-9.168 and 0.010-30.601 ng·g-1 dry weight, respectively. The recoveries were within 69.1-111.0 %, the intra/inter-day precisions were 0.1-6.1 % and 0.1-6.7 %, and the matrix effects were between -12.1 and 10.8 %, all within the acceptable range. Finally, 16 HOCs were detected in nine actual samples in range of not detected-307.22 ng·g-1 dry weight. Moreover, five bromides and two chlorides were identified by using non-target analysis in animal-derived foods.

Separation of Hydrochloric Acid and Oxalic Acid from Rare Earth Oxalic Acid Precipitation Mother Liquor by Electrodialysis

In this study, the hydrochloric acid from rare earth oxalic acid precipitation mother liquor was separated by electrodialysis (ED) with different anion exchange membranes, including selective anion exchange membrane (SAEM), polymer alloy anion exchange membrane (PAAEM), and homogenous anion exchange membrane (HAEM). In addition to actual wastewater, nine types of simulated solutions with different concentrations of hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid were used in the experiments. The results indicated that the hydrochloric acid could be separated effectively by electrodialysis with SAEM from simulated and real rare earth oxalic acid precipitation mother liquor under the operating voltage 15 V and ampere 2.2 A, in which the hydrochloric acid obtained in the concentrate chamber of ED is of higher purity (>91.5%) generally. It was found that the separation effect of the two acids was related to the concentrations and molar ratios of hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid contained in their mixtures. The SEM images and ESD-mapping analyses indicated that membrane fouling appeared on the surface of ACS and CSE at the diluted side of the ED membrane stack when electrodialysis was used to treat the real rare earth oxalic acid precipitation mother liquor. Fe, Yb, Al, and Dy were found in the CSE membrane section, and organic compounds containing carbon and sulfur were attached to the surface of the ACS. The results also indicated that the real rare earth precipitation mother liquor needed to be pretreated before the separation of hydrochloric acid and oxalic acid by electrodialysis.

High throughput extraction strategy for simultaneous analysis of 19 tetrabromobisphenol A and halogenated carbazole analogs in seafood

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), halogenated carbazole (HCZ), and their analogs are the emerging pollutants invading the marine environment. So far, a few methods have been reported for the simultaneous analysis of these pollutants due to their large polarity difference. In this study, an effective extraction and cleanup strategy was developed for the simultaneous determination of 19 TBBPA and HCZ congeners in seafood. The 19 analytes could be directly analyzed through high performance liquid chromatography after ultrasonic extraction (methanol, duplicate ethyl acetate-acetone (1:1, v/v)) and gel permeation chromatography cleanup. The acceptable spike-recoveries were within 65.7-118.3%; the precision was intra-/inter-day RSDs: 0.0-6.7%/0.0-8.5%; and the matrix effects were between -14.1% and 12.4%. The detection limits and quantification limits were 0.002-0.014 and 0.020-0.200 µg g^-1 dw, respectively. Additionally, this method successfully analyzed the seafood samples and the concentrations of these analytes were in range of nd-5.4 µg g^-1 dw.

Efficient removal of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) using sewage sludge-derived biochar: Adsorptive effect and mechanism

Sewerage sludge-derived biochars (SSDBCs) with high adsorption capacity and excellent recyclability were synthesized to remove tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in aqueous system. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental mapping via energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to characterize the morphology, composition, and microstructures. The maximum adsorption capacity of SSDBCs was about 87.02 mg g^-1 at 303 K and pH 7.5. The Langmuir isotherm demonstrated that the adsorption was mainly homogeneous and chemical processes. The kinetics of TBBPA removal well fitted the second-order dynamic model. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption was exothermic. The effect of π-π dispersive force and hydrogen bonding was proven as the main adsorption mechanism. Multiple cycle runs experiment revealed the excellent stability of recycled SSDBCs. This work provided a promising method of sludge resourceful treatment using an efficient, economic, cyclic, and convenient material for typical organic contaminant in the environment.

Oxidation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) by peroxymonosulfate: The role of in-situ formed HOBr

The degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), one of the most widely used brominated flame retardant, was evaluated during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation. TBBPA degradation was pH-dependent, with peak degradation rate constants occurring at pH 8.0-9.0, which was distinct from some other phenolic compounds. Singlet oxygen and radicals were found to play negligible roles in TBBPA degradation. TBBPA oxidation by PMS mainly proceeded via a direct oxidation pathway and the in-situ formed HOBr was found to greatly accelerate its degradation rates. The values of species-specific second-order rate constants for the reactions of PMS with the TBBPA k_HSO5-+TBBPA, k_HSO5-+TBBPA- and k_{HSO5-+TBBPA2-} were determined to be (1.11 ± 0.84) × 10^-2, (8.05 ± 2.31) × 10^-2, and (1.34 ± 0.25) × 10^-1 M^-1 s^-1, respectively, while the reaction rate constants for HOBr/OBr^- with TBBPA k_HOBr+TBBPA, k_HOBr+TBBPA-, k_HOBr+TBBPA2-and k_OBr-+TBBPA2- were determined to be (9.38 ± 2.10) × 10³, (1.59 ± 0.56) × 10⁵, (8.22 ± 0.41) × 10⁶, and (1.81 ± 0.12) × 10⁶ M^-1 s^-1, respectively. The bromine mass balance analysis showed that bromide ion and HOBr/OBr^- occupied 19.5% of total Br and brominated organic compounds accounted for the remaining percentages at pH 7.0. No formation of bromate was observed. Based on the identified products, a reaction pathway was proposed, which included oxidation, β-scission, hydroxylation, and dimerization reaction pathways. The results indicate that unactivated PMS is useful for the remediation of TBBPA contaminated water.

Transformation/degradation of tetrabromobisphenol A and its derivatives: A review of the metabolism and metabolites

Although the abiotic and biotic transformation/degradation (T/D) processes of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) have been widely investigated in model experiments, few reviews have focused on these processes along with their metabolites or degradation products. In this paper, we summarize the current knowledge on the T/D of TBBPA and its derivatives, including abiotic and biotic T/D strategies/conditions, mechanisms, metabolites and environmental occurrences. Various treatments, such as pyrolysis, photolysis, chemical reactions and biotransformation, have been employed to study the metabolic mechanism of TBBPA and its derivatives and to remediate associated contaminated environments. To date, more than 100 degradation products and metabolites have been identified, dominated by less brominated compounds such as bisphenol A, 2,6-dibromo-4-isopropylphenol, 2,6-dibromo-4-hydroxyl-phenol, 2,6-dibromophenol, isopropylene-2,6-dibromophenol, 4-(2-hydroxyisopropyl)-2,6-dibromophenol, etc. It can be concluded that the T/D of TBBPA mainly takes place through debromination and β-scission. In some environmental media and human and animal tissues, brominated metabolites, glucoside and sulfate derivatives are also important T/D products. Here, the T/D products of TBBPA and its derivatives have been most comprehensively presented from the literature in recent 20 years. This review will enhance the understanding of the environmental behaviors of TBBPA-associated brominated flame retardants along with their ecological and health risks.

HBCD and TBBPA in human scalp hair: Evidence of internal exposure

Human biomonitoring is a reliable method for evaluating human exposure to specific contaminants. Although blood is an ideal matrix for monitoring purposes, it is regarded as an invasive matrix. Therefore, current developments in the field of human biomonitoring are based on introducing new methods that use non-invasive matrices, such as hair. In this study, we examined the efficiencies of several extraction methods for the analysis of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) in human hair. The selected pretreatment method was validated through a general QA/QC process that included spiking experiments, and then, the method was used for the determination of HBCD and TBBPA concentrations in scalp hair samples collected from individuals in Korea (n = 24) and Iran (n = 15). The HBCD and TBBPA concentrations in the collected hair samples ranged from ND to 3.24 ng g^-1 and ND to 16.04 ng g^-1, respectively. Significantly higher concentrations of TBBPA were found in hair samples from Korea than those in hair samples from Iran (p < 0.05), which is expected to be the result of the large market and higher exposure of TBBPA in Korea. HBCD was not detected in hair samples from Iran. According to our knowledge this is the first study demonstrating the presence of TBBPA in human hair with nonspecific exposure. Lastly, we investigated the important factors that influence the interpretation of the contributions of endogenous and exogenous contaminations in hair. Based on the information, the HBCD and TBBPA in the collected hair samples were most likely from endogenous exposure. Therefore, our study showed that hair is potentially a suitable indicator for the monitoring of internal exposure to HBCD and TBBPA in different populations.

Kinetics and interfacial thermodynamics of the pH-related sorption of tetrabromobisphenol A onto multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Surface functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was performed using mixed acid and ethylenediamine. The materials were characterized by electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, Fourier transform infrared, N2 adsorption-desorption, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The pH-dependent sorption of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) onto raw and functionalized MWCNTs was investigated. A decrease in TBBPA uptake was found to be dependent on the adsorptive pKa in alkaline conditions. Two types of MWCNTs exhibited rapid binding kinetics for TBBPA sorption within 20 min. The kinetics of TBBPA sorption onto MWCNTs were analyzed using a pseudo-second-order model, an intraparticle diffusion model and Boyd model. The results showed that TBBPA sorption on MWCNTs and N-MWCNTs could be well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the external diffusion (boundary layer diffusion) was the rate-limiting step. The extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was applied to calculate interfacial free energies and to explain the sorption characteristics between the sorbent and solute. This analysis revealed that hydrophobic attractive interactions (i.e., interfacial AB interactions) were dominant in TBBPA sorption onto MWCNTs.
