Colorimetric detection and removal of radioactive Co ions using sodium alginate-based composite beads

Adsorption of metal ions by oceanic manganese nodule and deep-sea sediment: Behaviour, mechanism and evaluation

Deep-sea mining disturbs the sediment on the seabed to form plumose flows, carrying metal ions that are transmitted through the food chain, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems and human health. In this study, two types of marine raw materials were screened: Oceanic Manganese Nodules (OMN) and Deep-sea Sediments (DSS), and prepared the spherical regenerative adsorption materials OMN@SA, DSS@SA and OMN&DSS@SA using sodium alginate (SA) by sol-gel method. Preliminary investigations on the adsorption effect of metal ions were carried out. OMN@SA exhibited the best adsorption capacity, with the adsorption quantities for Cu2+, Co2+ and Ni2+ reaching 31.12, 21.11 and 16.66 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption behaviour is consistent with the Langmuir, pseudo-second-order kinetics and particle diffusion model, indicating that the adsorption process is mainly spontaneous, monolayer chemical adsorption, and the adsorption rate is mainly controlled by internal particle diffusion. SEM-EDS, XRD, FTIR and XPS analyses suggest that the adsorption mechanism includes surface physical adsorption, ion exchange, functional group complexation, electrostatic attraction and precipitation. The fixed bed column experiment shows that OMN@SA can effectively remove metal ions Cu2+, demonstrating excellent stability, safety and good regenerability. This study paves a new direction for the design of efficient and sustainable materials for heavy metal adsorption. More importantly, as marine primordial materials, OMN and DSS have strong technical and economic feasibility for future use in in-situ fixation of metal ions in seafloor sediments and restoration of the original seabed environment.

Fabrication of a porous polyacrylonitrile nanofiber adsorbent for removing radioactive 60Co

A Co2+ adsorbent was prepared using electrospun porous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, featuring easy recovery for reuse compared with a nanoparticle-based adsorbent. As an efficient ligand for Co2+, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was introduced on the surface of porous PAN nanofibers with the aid of a branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) linker to obtain an adsorbent with carboxylic acid groups. On the adsorbent surface, the carboxylic acid and amine groups from EDTA could adsorb Co2+ via ion exchange and chelation, and amine groups from PEI that remained after EDTA functionalization played a role in coordinating Co2+. The amine and carboxylic acid groups were simultaneously involved in the adsorption on the surface, making it possible to remove Co2+ over a wide pH range. An investigation of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the nanofibrous adsorbent indicated that monolayer chemisorption was achieved with a maximum Co2+ adsorption capacity of 8.32 mg/g. In addition, radioactive 60Co was efficiently removed by the adsorbent with a removal extent of more than 98%. Considering the easy separation from Co2+ solution and regeneration of the nanofibrous adsorbent and its availability in a wide pH range, the adsorbent has great advantages in practical applications.

Polyethyleneimine/hydrated titanium oxide-functionalized fibrous adsorbent for removing cobalt: Adsorption performance and irradiation stability

Radionuclides of ⁶⁰Co often encountered in the fields of radiation therapy, medical preparation, and equipment sterilization, which have been considered fatal. Therefore, developing efficient and irradiation-stable adsorbents for the removal of ⁶⁰Co in wastewater is urgently needed. An irradiation-stable fibrous adsorbent was fabricated through the surface functionalization of collagen fibers (CFs) by polyethyleneimine (PEI) and hydrated titanium oxide (TiO) (PEI-TiO-CFs). PEI-TiO-CFs, including their adsorption performance and irradiation stability, were systematically investigated. Results showed that PEI-TiO-CFs exhibit a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.5575 mmol g^-1. In addition, the adsorption capacity of PEI-TiO-CFs only demonstrated a slight decrease in the selectivity investigation of Co²⁺ mixed with another coexisting ion, such as Na⁺, K⁺, and NO^3-, Cl^-. Furthermore, breakthrough point of PEI-TiO-CFs in column is high at 80 BV (bed volume) and the PEI-TiO-CF column can be mostly regenerated using 12 BV of Na₂EDTA solution. Excellent irradiation stability of PEI-TiO-CFs was confirmed by the maintained morphology and adsorption capacity after irradiation at 350 kGy of ⁶⁰Co γ-ray. Results indicated that PEI-TiO-CFs are an effective adsorbent for radioactive cobalt removal from aqueous solutions.

One-pot synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots for highly sensitive determination of cobalt ions and biological imaging

In this work, a facile, economical and green method for the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) was established via hydrothermal synthesis using p-phenylenediamine and asparagine. The as-prepared N-CDs were characterized by Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Raman, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and other methods. Furthermore, the N-CDs showed high sensitivity toward cobalt (II) ion (Co²⁺). Interestingly, the fluorescence of N-CDs was quenched linearly in the 0.3-65 μM Co²⁺ concentrations range, under the optimum conditions, displaying a fast response toward Co²⁺ with the detection limit as low as 22 nM. Simultaneously, this method was applied in the analysis of water samples with considerable results. Finally, the N-CDs were successfully utilized as the imaging probe of live root tip tissue of Arabidopsis thaliana, demonstrating that the N-CDs possessed significant theoretical research meaning in the fields of biological correlation analysis, environmental monitoring and disease diagnosis.

Anti-Biofouling and Water-Stable Balanced Charged Metal Organic Framework-Based Polyelectrolyte Hydrogels for Extracting Uranium from Seawater

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are diffusely defined as a promising class of porous material for uranium extraction from seawater, but there are still challenges in their stability and anti-biofouling performance. Herein, a water-stable and anti-biofouling ZIF-67/SAP_0.45 composite hydrogel was reported by the sequential processes of electrostatic interactions between the oppositely charged polymer, ionic gelation, and template growth of ZIF-67 crystals. Entanglement of positively charged polyethyleneimine (PEI) and negatively charged sodium alginate (SA) polymer chains provided external porosities, anti-biofouling properties, and mechanical support for the hydrogels and further reduced the possibility of ZIF-67 aggregation. The neutral composite hydrogel possessed the least Nitzschia on the surface after 7 days contact, which endows the adsorbent with a high uranium uptake capacity of 2107.87 ± 41.64 μg g^-1 at 1 mg L^-1 uranium-containing seawater with 8.6 × 10⁵ mL^-1 Nitzschia. Additionally, this adsorbent showed water stability with an uranium uptake capacity of 232.88 ± 8.02 mg g^-1 even after five adsorption-desorption cycles because of the excellent preparation method. Benefitting from the distinctive hierarchical structure and large accessible surface area, the resultant adsorbent achieved a high uranium capacity of 6.99 ± 0.26 mg g^-1 in real seawater. This flexible and scalable approach made the MOF/SAP composite hydrogel a highly desirable uranium adsorbent.

Cesium ion-exchange resin using sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate for binding to Prussian blue

Radioactive Cs ions are extremely harmful to the human body, causing cancers and other diseases. Treatments were performed on radioactive Cs present in wastewater after use in industrial or medical fields. Prussian blue (PB) has been widely used for the removal of Cs ions from water but its colloidal structure hinders reuse, making it problematic for practical use. To solve this problem, we used a commercial macroporous polymer resin as a PB matrix. To provide an efficient anchor for PB, the surface of the polymer resin was decorated with sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate to produce a negatively charged surface. The successful chemical binding between the polymer resin and PB prevented leakage of the latter during adsorption and crosslinked structure of the matrix provided regeneration of the adsorbent. The adsorbent maintained its removal efficiency after five repeats of the regeneration process. The PB-based, Cs ion-exchange resin showed excellent selectivity toward Cs ions and good reusability, maintaining its high adsorption capacity.

Removal of p-cresol and tylosin from water using a novel composite of alginate, recycled MnO2 and activated carbon

For sustainable production, there is an urgent need to minimize the adverse environmental impacts of swine farming, which is a major contributor of the pollutants p-cresol and tylosin. Novel reactive composite alginate beads (CAB-MOACs) were fabricated by combining alginate with activated carbon (AC) and MnO₂ recovered from spent battery waste and used for efficient removal of p-cresol and tylosin from water. Batch experiments were carried out under varying pH (3-11), temperature (15-50 °C), and agitation speed (50-200 rpm) to understand their effects on removal efficiency. The CAB-MOACs had better removal efficiency for p-cresol and tylosin than alginate beads alone or beads containing only AC or MnO₂. Adsorption to CAB-MOACs followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (R²≥0.98) and Langmuir isotherm models (R²≥0.95). CAB-MOACs showed higher removal efficiency (∼99.9% after 10 h) compared to beads containing only immobilized MnO₂ (60-70%) or AC (94-96%). Regeneration and reuse performance of the CAB-MOACs was excellent through five cycles, although slightly better for p-cresol than tylosin. With low-cost manufacturing and beneficial utilization of hazardous waste such as spent batteries, the newly developed composite beads show potential as an effective adsorbent for treating wastewater effluent containing emerging contaminants like p-cresol and tylosin. Future studies may focus on product refinement and large-scale testing on actual wastewaters.

Preparation of alginate fibers coagulated by calcium chloride or sulfuric acid: Application to the adsorption of Sr2

The adsorption behavior of Sr²⁺ over alginate (Alg) fibers prepared by wet spinning was investigated. Different grades of sodium alginate (Alg-Na) were chosen. The Alg fibers were obtained by coagulation of 1% H₂SO₄ (Alg-acid) or 5% CaCl₂ (Alg-Ca) solutions. In addition, the Sr²⁺ adsorption percentages of the spherical Alg-Ca beads with a 0.672-mm-diameter was 70.64% which was significantly lower than that Alg-Ca fibers (79.49%). These results suggested that the fibrous shape is more suitable than the spheres as an adsorbent from sea water. For Sr²⁺ adsorption capacities using different Alg fibers, the Alg-acid fibers obtained from 12% IL-2 and 8% I-2 grade solutions reached adsorption equilibrium at 99.88 and 99.27%, respectively, within 3 min. However, the Alg-Ca fiber obtained from 8% I-2 grade solution reached equilibrium at 80.01% within 30 min. Moreover, the Alg-acid fiber obtained from 8% I-2 grade solution adsorbed up to 34 mg/g of Sr²⁺ at an initial concentration of 1700 mg/L solutions. However, when Sr²⁺ co-existing cations (Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and mixtures of them) the adsorption capacity of the Alg-Ca fiber obtained from 8% I-2 grade solution slightly decreased since the egg-box structure of Alg-Ca fiber favored the selective Sr²⁺ adsorption and subsequent ion exchange with Ca²⁺.

Design of a novel filter paper based construct for rapid analysis of acetone

The present work was focused to design a cheap, rapid, portable and easy to use filter paper based assay for the qualitative and quantitate analysis of acetone. Sodium alginate gel was loaded with the acetone specific optical signal probe, and subsequently coated onto filter paper surface to design portable colorimetric assays for acetone monitoring. The color of the paper sensor strip was observed to change from dark yellow to light yellowish in the presence of varying concentrations of acetone. Three different color analyzing models including RGB, HSV, and LAB were employed to probe the output optical signal, and their performance was compared in terms of better interpretation of the generated signal. The LAB model was found to provide better analytical figures of merit with a linear response for the acetone concentration ranging from 2.5 to 1500 ppm, and a limit of detection of 0.5 ppm. Furthermore, the specificity of the designed filter paper based sensor was demonstrated against different common interfering compounds. The results demonstrated the potential of our proposed filter paper based sensor as a novel tool for the analysis of acetone.
