Theoretical study on stabilization mechanisms of nitrate esters using aromatic amines as stabilizers

Molecular Simulation Study on the Aging Mechanism of NEPE Propellant Matrix

Polyethylene glycols (PEG) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are often used as the main components of binders and curing agents in solid propellants, and their aging is an important issue in the storage and use of propellants. To study the aging behavior and aging mechanism of nitrate ester plasticized polyether propellant (NEPE) matrix during storage, the transition states of aging reactions of binder and curing agent were optimized at the (U)B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level of theory, and the rate coefficients over the temperature range of 298-1000 K were calculated by CVT theory. The results showed that there were five kinds of aging reactions for binder, which included decomposition, nitration, H abstraction, oxidation, and crosslinking reactions. Among them, theenergy barriers of oxidation and H abstraction reactions were relatively low (79.3-91.2 kJ·mol^-1) and the main reaction types of binder aging. The main aging reaction of curing agent was decomposition. Compared with the aging reactions of binder, the energy barriers of curing agent are higher (196.6-282.7 kJ·mol^-1) and the reaction is more difficult to occur. By comparing the energy barriers and rate constants of different reactions, it is found that the aging of NEPE propellant matrix can be divided into two stages. In the first stage, the propellant matrix mainly undergoes H abstraction and oxidation reaction, and as the reaction proceeds, the products crosslink to form -O-O-, -C-C-, and -C-O-C- bonds. At this time, the long chain molecules of the propellant matrix crosslink, and the molecular weight increases. This stage corresponds to the rising stage of mechanical properties in the aging process of the propellant. In the second stage, the propellant matrix mainly undergoes decomposition and nitration, resulting in degradation, the reduction of molecular weights, and the appearance of holes and microcracks in the matrix. This stage corresponds to the decline of mechanical properties in the aging process of the propellant. The above simulation results are in good agreement with the aging experimental phenomena, revealing the microscopic mechanism of the changes in the macroscopic properties of NEPE propellant during the aging process, and providing a theoretical basis for the related research on the aging properties and anti-aging technology of NEPE propellant.

Methyl nitrate energetic compounds based on bicyclic scaffolds of furazan-isofurazan (isoxazole): syntheses, crystal structures and detonation performances

Two energetic bicyclic scaffolds (furazan-isoxazole and furazan-1,3,4-oxadiazole) were constructed via different cyclization reactions. Based on the energetic bicyclic scaffolds, the energetic compounds, 3-(4-nitraminofurazan-3-ly)-isoxazole-5-methylnitrate 1c and 5-(4-nitraminofurazan-3-ly)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-methylnitrate 2c, were designed and synthesized in good yields. Because of the acidity of nitramine, the corresponding energetic ionic salts, ammonium 3-(4-nitraminofurazan-3-ly)isoxazole-5-methylnitrate 1d and ammonium 5-(4-nitraminofurazan-3-ly)-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-methylnitrate 2e, were also obtained and well characterized, their structures were further determined by X-ray single crystal diffraction. To have a better understanding of the structure-property relationships of furazan-bicyclic scaffolds and nitrate groups, their thermal behaviors, detonation performances and the sensitivities were investigated via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), ESP analysis, Hirshfeld surfaces calculation, EXPLO5 program and BAM standard techniques. Compared with those of ammonium 5-(4-nitraminofurazan-3-ly)-1,2,4-oxadiazole-2-methylnitrate 3e, the results show that all these methyl nitrate energetic compounds based on bicyclic scaffolds of furazan-isofurazan exhibit good detonation performances and extraordinary insensitivities. As supported by experimental and theoretical data, the formation of energetic ionic salts causes an increase of the weak interactions, significantly improving the thermal performance over 110 °C.

Theoretical study on the mechanisms of the decomposition of nitrate esters and the stabilization of aromatic amines

The nitrate esters are important components of double-base propellants. Aromatic amines are recommended as the stabilizers to delay the decomposition of nitrate esters and increase their storage time. The decomposition mechanisms of alkyl, alkoxy dinitrate, and poly-fluoride nitrate esters and the stabilizing effect of aromatic amines including new designed phenols are studied at the level of B3LYP/6-31G**. Alkyl and alkoxyl dinitrate esters are likely to be transformed by hydrogen abstraction, which is consistent with that of mononitrate and trinitrate esters. However, for poly-fluoride nitrate esters, NO₂ catalyzed self-decomposition is preferred. In addition, comparing with mononitrate and trinitrate esters, the order of their stability is mononitrates > dinitrates > trinitrates. Poly-fluoride nitrate esters have a poorer stability than non-fluorinated nitrate esters. Comparing with parent nitrate esters, the stability of new designed poly-fluoride oxygen-containing nitrate esters is slightly improved. Aromatic amines including new designed phenols are effective stabilizers of nitrate esters, especially when introduced hydroxyl in the para position, can enhance the effects of stabilizers. The rate constants for the decomposition of nitrate esters and the bimolecular reaction between stabilizers and NO₂ are calculated by using traditional transition state theory.
