Micro-nanostructured δ-Bi2O3 with surface oxygen vacancies as superior adsorbents for SeOx2- ions

Wood aerogels decorated amino-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) as efficient filter for multistage purification of wastewater

Exploring novel water purifier to efficiently remove heavy metal ions from the wastewater is of vital importance. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of natural wood and the chelation of amino group, a high-efficiency water purifier with ethylenediamine functionalized MIL-101(Cr) octahedrons anchored on the wood aerogel (MIL-101(Cr)-ED/WA) was constructed. Benefiting from the two-pronged approach with the hierarchical structure of the wood aerogel frame for multistage filtration and the -NH2 that capable of chelation with metal ions, the fabricated MIL-101(Cr)-ED/WA exhibits excellent water purification performances, and its adsorption capacity of toxic Pb2+ ions could reach up to 6.46 mmol g-1. Furthermore, it demonstrates superior recyclability without secondary pollution and is also suitable for simultaneous treatment of multiple metal species. In general, this work will broaden the utilization of wood-based structural engineering materials in the treatment of heavy metal wastewater.

Treatment technologies for selenium contaminated water: A critical review

Selenium is an indispensable trace element for humans and other organisms; however, excessive selenium in water can jeopardize the aquatic environment. Investigations on the biogeochemical cycle of selenium have shown that anthropogenic activities such as mining, refinery, and coal combustion mainly contribute to aquatic selenium pollution, imposing tremendous risks on ecosystems and human beings. Various technologies thus have been developed recently to treat selenium contaminated water to reduce its environmental impacts. This work provides a critical review on the applications, characteristics, and latest developments of current treatment technologies for selenium polluted water. It first outlines the present status of the characteristics, sources, and toxicity of selenium in water. Selenium treatment technologies are then classified into three categories: 1) physicochemical separation including membrane filtration, adsorption, coagulation/precipitation, 2) redox decontamination including chemical reduction and catalysis, and 3) biological transformation including microbial treatment and constructed wetland. Details of these methods including their overall efficiencies, applicability, advantages and drawbacks, and latest developments are systematically analyzed and compared. Although all these methods are promising in treating selenium in water, further studies are still needed to develop sustainable strategies based on existing and new technologies. Perspectives on future research directions are laid out at the end.

Speciation analysis of inorganic selenium in wastewater using a highly selective cellulose-based adsorbent via liquid electrode plasma optical emission spectrometry

Speciation of selenium (Se) is typically carried out using a sophisticated technique such as ICP-MS after preconcentration using an adsorbent; however, the separation and preconcentration of inorganic Se has not been realized in the solutions containing high concentrations of SO₄^2-. A dithiocarbamate-modified cellulose (DMC) was used in this study for the selective extraction and preconcentration of inorganic Se in wastewater, with a portable liquid electrode plasma-optical emission spectrometry (LEP-OES) being employed for quantification. DMC was found to selectively and quantitatively adsorb selenite (Se^IV) over a wide range of pH (1.0-8.0); however, less than 3.0% of selenate (Se^VI) was adsorbed in a pH range of 3.0-11. Quantitative extraction of Se^IV was achieved even in the presence of 3.5 mol L^-1 SO₄^2-. The maximum sample volume from which 10 mg of DMC could quantitatively extract Se^IV was found to be 500 mL. KOH (0.60 mL, 1.5 mol L^-1) was found to quantitatively desorb Se^IV retained on the adsorbent and yielded an enrichment factor of 833. The recovery of Se species from synthetic flue-gas desulfurization wastewater containing Se^IV and Se^VI at concentrations of 5.0 µmol L^-1 was 96.2 ± 1.8% and 105.8 ± 1.8%, respectively.

Polymorphism and Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis of Doped Bi2O3:M (M = S, Se, and Re)

δ-Bi₂O₃:M (M = S, Se, and Re) with an oxygen-defective fluorite-type structure is obtained by a coprecipitation method starting from the bismuth oxido cluster [Bi₃₈O₄₅(OMc)₂₄(dmso)₉]·2dmso·7H₂O (A) in the presence of additives such as Na₂SO₄, Na₂SeO₄, NH₄ReO₄, Na₂SeO₃·5H₂O, and Na₂SO₃. The coprecipitation of the starting materials with aqueous NaOH results in the formation of alkaline reaction mixtures, and the cubic bismuth(III)-based oxides Bi₁₄O₂₀(SO₄) (1c), Bi₁₄O₂₀(SeO₄) (2c), Bi₁₄O₂₀(ReO_4.5) (3c), Bi_12.25O_16.625(SeO₃)_1.75 (4c), and Bi_10.51O_14.765(SO₃)_0.49(SO₄)_0.51 (5c) are obtained after microwave-assisted heating; formation of compound 5c is the result of partial oxidation of sulfur. The compounds 1c, 2c, 4c, and 5c absorb UV light only, whereas compound 3c absorbs in the visible-light region of the solar spectrum. Thermal treatment of the as-prepared metastable bismuth(III) oxide chalcogenates 1c and 2c at T = 600 °C provides a monotropic phase transition into their tetragonal polymorphs Bi₁₄O₂₀(SO₄) (1t) and Bi₁₄O₂₀(SeO₄) (2t), while compound 3c is transformed into the tetragonal modification of Bi₁₄O₂₀(ReO_4.5) (3t) after calcination at T = 700 °C. Compounds of the systems Bi₂O₃-SO_x (x = 2 and 3) and Bi₂O₃-Re₂O₇ are thermally stable up to T = 800 °C, whereas compounds of the system Bi₂O₃-SeO₃ completely lose SeO₃. Thermal treatment of 4c and 5c in air results in the oxidation of the tetravalent to hexavalent sulfur and selenium, respectively, upon heating to T = 400-500 °C. The as-prepared cubic bismuth(III)-based oxides 1c-5c were studied with regard to the photocatalytic decomposition of rhodamine B under visible-light irradiation with compound 3c showing the highest turnover and efficiency.

Selenium uptake and simultaneous catalysis of sulfite oxidation in ammonia-based desulfurization

Accelerating the (NH₄)₂SO₃ oxidation gives rise to the reclaiming of byproduct, while there are secondary environmental risks from reduction of the coexisted selenium species by sulfite. In this study, a bi-functional Co-SBA-15-SH, were synthesized through Co impregnation and sulfhydryl (-SH) decoration, which can simultaneously uptake Se and accelerate sulfite oxidation efficiently. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics and migration mechanism of Se species were revealed through characterization and density functional calculations, with maximum adsorption capacity of 223 mg/g. The inhibition of Se⁰ re-emission and poisonous effect of Se on sulfite oxidation was also investigated. Using the findings of this study, the ammonia desulfurization can be improved by enabling purification of the byproduct and lowering the toxicity of effluent by removing toxic pollutants.

Efficient removal of selenate in water by cationic poly(allyltrimethylammonium) grafted chitosan and biochar composite

The discovery of cheap and eco-friendly functional materials for the removal of anionic heavy metal ions is still challenging in the treatment of heavy metal-contaminated water. Herein, a new poly(allyltrimethylammonium) grafted chitosan and biochar composite (PATMAC-CTS-BC) was introduced for the removal of selenate (SeO₄^2-) in water. Results suggest that the PATMAC-CTS-BC showed a rapid removal of SeO₄^2- with efficiency of >97% within 10 min and it followed a pseudo-second-order model. High capacity of SeO₄^2- adsorption by the composite was achieved, with maximum value of 98.99 mg g^-1 based on Langmuir model, considerably higher than most of reported adsorbents. The thermodynamic results reflected the spontaneous and exothermic nature of SeO₄^2- adsorption onto the composite. The composite could be applied at a wide initial pH range (2-10) with high removal efficiency of SeO₄^2- because of permanent positive charges of quaternary ammonium groups (=N⁺-). The removal mechanisms of SeO₄^2- were mainly attributed to electrostatic interactions with =N⁺- and protonated -NH₃⁺ groups, and redox-complexation interactions with -NH₂, -NH-, and -OH groups. Besides SeO₄^2-, the hexavalent chromium (Cr₂O₇^2-) was considered as example to further demonstrate the anion removal capability of cationic hydrogel-BC composite. The study outcomes open up new opportunities to efficiently remove anionic heavy metal ions (e.g., SeO₄^2- and Cr₂O₇^2-) in water using these materials.

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-polyurethane/graphene oxide magnetic nanoconjugates as effective adsorbent for chromium and lead ions

In this work, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin-polyurethane magnetic nanoconjugates/reduced graphene oxide (HPMNPU/GO) supramolecules were prepared. The adsorbent was characterized using FTIR and SEM. The adsorbent was evaluated for its efficiency to remove Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ from aqueous solutions through batch adsorption studies following a Definitive Screening Design (DSD). Effects of solution pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration, ionic strength, GO/NC ratio and temperature on Cr ⁶⁺ and Pb ²⁺ adsorption were investigated. Optimization of the adsorption process was done using a desirability function of the Design Expert V11 software. A good agreement between experimental and predicted data proved the efficiency of this model for prediction of real optimum point. The batch experiments implied that the pseudo-second-order model (lowest sum of square error (SSE) values and correlation coefficients (R²) > 0.999) was better to describe the adsorption kinetics of Cr⁶⁺ and Pb²⁺ onto the HPMNPU/GO.

Network interior and surface engineering of alginate-based beads using sorption affinity component for enhanced phosphate capture

In order to alleviate the environmental problems caused by excessive discharge of phosphate, an environmental friendly and highly efficient bio-sorbent (SA-La@PEI) for phosphate was fabricated by combing strategies of sorption affinity component mediated and poly(ethylenimine) surface engineering of alginate beads. Various characterization methods like SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS were adopted to examine the morphology and functional group composition of SA-La@PEI. Through detailed tests, SA-La@PEI exhibited excellent adsorption performance of 121.2 mg/g, which was better than most published materials. More importantly, the outstanding phosphate selectivity of SA-La@PEI was exposed when NO₃^-, HCO₃^-, SO₄^2- and Cl^- were added to the phosphate solution. Considering the integrated components in composites, both chemical precipitation and electrostatic attraction can be considered as the dominant mechanisms of phosphate adsorption. Totally, as-prepared SA-La@PEI beads might be a promising sorbent for the decontamination of excessive phosphate because of its low-cost, excellent adsorption performance and mechanical strength.

Function integrated chitosan-based beads with throughout sorption sites and inherent diffusion network for efficient phosphate removal

A novel, cost-effective and biomass-derived adsorbent was fabricated by coating polydopamine on lanthanum-chitosan hydrogel (La-CS@PDA), which were endowed with a plentiful of amine groups. The diffusion structure of channel-network of La-CS@PDA made it well used in phosphate removal in wastewater treatment. The Langmuir isotherm delivered the maximal adsorption capacity about 195.3 mg/g, which was superior to most reported phosphate removal materials. More significantly, in the presence of competitive anions Cl^-, SO₄^2-, HCO₃^-, NO₃^-, F^- and HCrO₄^-, the resultant La-CS@PDA still conducted distinct selectivity for phosphate, which could be attributed to the selective binding sites of La species in the composite. Under continuous adsorption, the dynamic experimental data fitted well with Thomas model which imitates industrial practical application. By virtue of more fortes of high efficiency, ease of separation and expectable mechanical strength, as-prepared La-CS@PDA might be a promising candidate of dephosphorizing sorbent.

Highly efficient removal of Pb2+ by a sandwich structure of metal–organic framework/GO composite with enhanced stability

Sandwich-structured MIL-101(Fe)/GO was successfully synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method, and exhibited a high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetics.
