Alternated biodegradation of naphthalene (NAP), acenaphthylene (ACY) and acenaphthene (ACE) in an aerobic granular sludge reactor (GSBR)

Comparison of benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) removal from wastewater after subsequent stages of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treatment process

The research focused on benzotriazole ultraviolet stabilizers (BUVs) which are commonly used compounds despite being found dangerous, e.g. promoting breast cancer cell proliferation, damaging vital organs such as hearts, brains livers and kidneys. The aim of the study was to analyse the efficiency and removal rate of BUVs from wastewater depending on the quantity of tested compounds and SBR anaerobic-aerobic conditions. The study was conducted in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs - 17 L) with real flocculent activated sludge (8 L) and model wastewater (5 L) containing UV-326, UV-327, UV-328, UV-329 and UV-P from 50 to 600 μg∙L-1. The SBR were operated in 390 cycles of 7 h and 10 min over 130 days. The similarity of the technological parameters of the treatment process to those used in a real wastewater treatment plant was maintained. Efficiency removal of individual BUVs was strictly dependent on the dose of compounds introduced into wastewater and ranged from 68.2 to 97 %. Removal of UV-329 occurred with lowest efficiency (from 68.2 to 85.2 %) while UV-326 was most efficiently removed from the wastewater (from 94.1 to 97 %). UV-329 was removed from wastewater with the lowest (0.0968-0.9524 μg∙L-1∙min-1) average removal rate while UV-327 with the highest (0.16-1.3357 μg∙L-1∙min-1), irrespective of BUVs dose in the influent. Secondary release of BUVs into the wastewater occurred in SBR during the settling phase and was dependent on the type and concentration of the BUVs in the raw wastewater. This occurrence was noted for UV-326 ≥ 100; UV-327 = 600; UV-328 ≥ 200; UV-329 ≥ 50 and UV-P ≥ 100 μg∙L-1. The settling phase needs to be shortened to the required minimum. This is an important conclusion for WWTPs in regards to SBR cycle duration and technological parameters of the treatment process.

When aerobic granular sludge faces emerging contaminants: A review

The evolution of emerging contaminants (ECs) has caused greater requirements and challenges to the current biological wastewater treatment technology. As one of the most promising biological treatment technologies, the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process also faces the challenge of ECs. This study summarizes the recent progress and characteristics of several representative ECs (persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, antibiotics, and microplastics) in AGS systems that have garnered widespread attention. Additionally, the biodegradation and adsorption mechanisms of ECs were discussed, and the interactions between various ECs and AGS was elucidated. The importance of extracellular polymeric substances for the stabilization of AGS and the removal of ECs is also discussed. Knowledge gaps and future research directions that may enable the practical application of AGS are highlighted. Overall, AGS processes show great application potential and this review provides guidance for the future implementation of AGS technology as well as elucidating the mechanism of its interaction with ECs.

Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin improves the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by aerobic granular sludge

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as polar organic pollutants, their potential harm to the environment has caused widespread concern. This study describes a simple method to prepare modified aerobic granular sludge (AGS) by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD). Using HP-β-CD modified AGS as the adsorbent, the removal of specific PAHs: Fluoranthene (Fla) reached 95% comparing to 80% of the unmodified AGS. The removal of Fla was related to initial concentration, temperature and ion concentration (Na⁺, Mg²⁺). The removal efficiency of Fla reached 96.27%, 94.26% and 93.69%, when initial concentration of Fla was 10, 15 and 20 μmol/L. At temperatures of 15°C, 30°C and 45°C, the removal efficiency of Fla (15 μmol/L) gradually improved from 87.20% to 94.84% and 95.73%. The presence of Na⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions led to the deterioration of PAHs removal. With the increase of Na⁺ and Mg²⁺ concentrations, the removal efficiency of modified AGS on PAHs decreased by 3.9% and 6.5%, respectively. These findings indicate the potential application of cyclodextrins as the active sites of a complex modified polymer network for PAHs wastewater treatment.

Application of the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) in the Optimization of Acenaphthene (ACN) Removal from Wastewater by Activated Carbon

The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wastewater has raised concerns about human health due to their potential carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. The widespread use of products containing acenaphthene (ACN, one of the 16 priority PAHs) in many industries and large-scale ACN release into the wastewater has resulted in dangerous concentrations of ACN in the environment. As a result, before discharge, it is required to eliminate or reduce its concentration to an acceptable level. Adsorption is an effective method of removing PAHs from wastewater. In this study, the ACN adsorption reaction in sample wastewater was evaluated using activated carbon produced by oil palm leaves. HPLC was used as an analytical method for quantifying ACN in wastewater samples. The initial concentration of ACN in water samples was 9.58 ± 0.5 mg/L. The experiments were conducted using the CCD combined with the RSM and using three independent variables, i.e., pH, activated carbon dosage (g/L), and contact time (min), and one dependent variable, i.e., ACN removal efficiency (%). The ANOVA was used to identify the significance of the developed model in the RSM. Lastly, the RSM was used to optimize the adsorption results. The experimental results determined that the removal of 98.73 ± 1% of ACN (the highest amount) was achieved at pH 7, while the removal of 88.44 ± 1% of ACN (the lowest amount) was achieved at pH 4.5. The adsorption efficiency of ACN was slightly increased by an increase in activated carbon dosage from 0.1 to 3 g/L (<4%). The contact time was the most significant factor in controlling the adsorption efficiency of ACN in wastewater, and not pH value or dosage. The adsorption reaction was quick, and 88–90% of ACN was removed within 5 min of the adsorption reaction, followed by slower adsorption for up to 90 min. The RSM model was developed on the basis of experimental results. An ANOVA determined that the developed model was significant enough to represent the adsorption data as the p-value was <0.05 for the model. The factors pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time were also significant factors (p-value < 0.05). The optimization results showed that pH of 6.96, adsorbent dosage of 2.62 g/L, and contact time of 71.67 min were the optimal conditions for eliminating 98.88% of the ACN. The optimization results were verified in the lab, and a close agreement was found between the predicted results of the RSM and experimental results. The study found that the RSM is an effective tool for optimizing operating variables, as well as for significantly reducing time and experimentation costs.

Natural Cinnamic Acid Derivatives: A Comprehensive Study on Structural, Anti/Pro-Oxidant, and Environmental Impacts

Cinnamic acid (CA), p-coumaric acid (4-hydroxycinnamic acid, 4-HCA), caffeic acid (3,4-vdihydroxycinnamic acid, 3,4-dHCA), and 3,4,5-trihydroxycinnamic acid (3,4,5-tHCA) were studied for their structural, anti-/pro-oxidant properties and biodegradability. The FT-IR, FT-Raman, UV/Vis, ¹H and ¹³C NMR, and quantum chemical calculations in B3LYP/6-311++G** were performed to study the effect on number and position of hydroxyl group in the ring on the molecular structure of molecules. The antioxidant properties of the derivatives were examined using DPPH^● and HO^● radicals scavenging assays, ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC), inhibition of linoleic acid oxidation, as well as the biological antioxidant assay with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Moreover, the pro-oxidant activity of compounds in Trolox oxidation assay was estimated. The effect of the derivatives on environment on the basis of increasing the carbon and nitrogen compounds transformation processes occurring in biological wastewater treatment was studied.

Biosorption of LMW PAHs on activated sludge aerobic granules under varying BOD loading rate conditions

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons belong to the main priority substances for the aquatic environment. One of the emission sources of these compounds to environment is wastewater discharged from conventional wastewater treatment systems, which are not designed to cope with this type of pollution. Thus, due to the widely discussed properties of aerobic granular activated sludge in the literature - a conducted study has proven its ability to remove LMW PAHs (naphthalene (Nap), acenaphthylene (Acy), acenaphthene (Ace), fluorene (Flu), phenanthrene (Phe) and anthracene (Ant)) from wastewater by biosorption process at varying loadings of organic compounds expressed as BOD (kg/kg·d) on the activated sludge mass. The maximum biosorption of Nap was 605 µg/kg_d.m., Acy equals to 134 µg/kg_d.m., Ace equals to 355 µg/kg_d.m. Flu equals to 104 µg/kg_d.m. Phe equal to 204 µg/kg_d.m. and Ant equal to 173 µg/kg_d.m. The study showed that the BOD loading rate is one of the factors affecting the biosorption process of LMW PAHs. However, as the amount of adsorbed LMW PAHs increased, the condition of aerobic granular activated sludge deteriorated, which was evidenced by gradual increase in the values of technological parameters of activated sludge (SVI, HRT, SRT) and a smaller increase in activated sludge dry mass.

Diversity and functional prediction of microbial communities involved in the first aerobic bioreactor of coking wastewater treatment system

The pre-aerobic process of coking wastewater treatment has strong capacity of decarbonization and detoxification, which contribute to the subsequent dinitrogen of non-carbon source/heterotrophic denitrification. The COD removal rate can reach > 90% in the first aerobic bioreactor of the novel O/H/O coking wastewater treatment system during long-term operation. The physico-chemical characteristics of influent and effluent coking wastewater in the first aerobic bioreactor were analyzed to examine how they correlated with bacterial communities. The diversity of the activated sludge microbial community was investigated using a culture-independent molecular approach. The microbial community functional profiling and detailed pathways were predicted from the 16S rRNA gene-sequencing data by the PICRUSt software and the KEGG database. High-throughput MiSeq sequencing results revealed a distinct microbial composition in the activated sludge of the first aerobic bioreactor of the O/H/O system. Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Chlorobi were the decarbonization and detoxification dominant phyla with the relative abundance of 84.07 ± 5.45, 10.89 ± 6.31, and 2.96 ± 1.12%, respectively. Thiobacillus, Rhodoplanes, Lysobacter, and Leucobacter were the potential major genera involved in the crucial functional pathways related to the degradation of phenols, cyanide, benzoate, and naphthalene. These results indicated that the comprehensive understanding of the structure and function diversity of the microbial community in the bioreactor will be conducive to the optimal coking wastewater treatment.
