Resolving the kinetic and intrinsic constraints of heat-activated peroxydisulfate oxidation of iopromide in aqueous solution

Degradation Kinetics and Disinfection By-Product Formation of Iopromide during UV/Chlorination and UV/Persulfate Oxidation

As the detection of micropollutants in various water resources is commonly reported, developing an efficient technology to remove them to maintain water safety has become a major focus in recent years. The degradation kinetics of iopromide, one of a group of iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM), using advanced oxidation processes of ultraviolet/chlorination (UV/Cl2) and UV/persulfate (UV/PS) oxidation were investigated in this research. The results show that iopromide degradation fitted pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the rate constants were calculated as 2.20 (± 0.01) × 10−1 min−1 and 6.08 (± 0.10) × 10−2 min−1 in UV/Cl2 and UV/PS, respectively. In the two systems, the degradation rates were positively correlated with the initial concentrations of HOCl and PS, respectively. In the UV/Cl2 system, the degradation rate of iopromide reached a maximum at pH 7, while in the UV/PS system, pH had only a slight effect on the degradation rate. Chloride in water had a negligible effect on iopromide degradation, whereas bromide inhibited iopromide degradation in the UV/Cl2 system. The contributions of UV irradiation, •OH, and RCS to iopromide degradation during UV/Cl2 treatment were calculated as 20.8%, 54.1%, and 25.1%, respectively. One carbonated and three nitrogenated disinfection by-products (C-DBP (chloroform) and N-DBPs (dichloroacetonitrile, trichloronitromethane, and trichloroacetone)) were detected at relatively high levels, along with three emerging iodinated DBPs (dichloroiodomethane, monochlorodiiodomethane, and triiodomethane). More C- and N-DBPs were generated in the UV/Cl2 and UV/PS systems than in UV irradiation, while considerably higher I-DBPs were generated in UV irradiation than in the other two systems. Thus, it is essential to pay attention to DBP formation when UV/Cl2 or UV/PS is used to treat iopromide in water. In order to better control the generation of carcinogenic and toxic I-DBPs, Cl2 or PS combined with UV should be adopted for iopromide degradation, instead of UV alone, for providing safe drinking water to the public.

Membrane Distillation Hybrid Peroxydisulfate Activation toward Mitigating the Membrane Wetting by Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate

The fouling/wetting of hydrophobic membrane caused by organic substances with low-surface energy substantially limits the development of the membrane distillation (MD) process. The sulfate radical (SO4 ·−)-based advanced oxidation process (AOP) has been a promising technology to degrade organics in wastewater treatment, and peroxydisulfate (PDS) could be efficiently activated by heat. Thus, a hybrid process of MD-AOP via PDS activated by a hot feed was hypothesized to mitigate membrane fouling/wetting. Experiments dealing with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) containing a salty solution via two commercial membranes (PVDF and PTFE) were performed, and varying membrane wetting extents in the coupling process were discussed at different PDS concentrations and feed temperatures. Our results demonstrated permeate flux decline and a rise in conductivity due to membrane wetting by SDS, which was efficiently alleviated in the hybrid process rather than the standalone MD process. Moreover, such a mitigation was enhanced by a higher PDS concentration up to 5 mM and higher feed temperature. In addition, qualitative characterization on membrane coupons wetted by SDS was successfully performed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS results implied both types of hydrophobic membranes were protected from losing their hydrophobicity in the presence of PDS activation, agreeing with our initial hypothesis. This work could provide insight into future fouling/wetting control strategies for hydrophobic membranes and facilitate the development of an MD process.

Efficient Degradation of Iopromide by Using Sulfite Activated with Mackinawite

Iopromide (IOP), an iodinated X-ray contrast medium (ICM), is identified as a precursor to iodide disinfection byproducts that have high genotoxicity and cytotoxicity to mammals. ICM remains persistent through typical wastewater treatment processes and even through some hydroxyl radical-based advanced oxidation processes. The development of new technologies to remove ICMs is needed. In this work, mackinawite (FeS)-activated sulfite autoxidation was employed for the degradation of IOP-containing water. The experiment was performed in a 500 mL self-made temperature-controlled reactor with online monitoring pH and dissolved oxygen in the laboratory. The effects of various parameters, such as initial pH values, sulfite dosages, FeS dosages, dissolved oxygen, and inorganic anions on the performance of the treatment process have been investigated. Eighty percent of IOP could be degraded in 15 min with 1 g L-1 FeS, 400 μmol L-1 sulfite at pH 8, and high efficiency on the removal of total organic carbon (TOC) was achieved, which is 71.8% via a reaction for 1 h. The generated hydroxyl and oxysulfur radicals, which contributed to the oxidation process, were identified through radical quenching experiments. The dissolved oxygen was essential for the degradation of IOP. The presence of Cl- could facilitate IOP degradation, while NO3- and CO32- could inhibit the degradation process. The reaction pathway involving H-abstraction and oxidative decarboxylation was proposed, based on product identification. The current system shows good applicability for the degradation of IOP and may help in developing a new approach for the treatment of ICM-containing water.
