Abstract
Mercury pollution is a critical, worldwide problem and the efficient, cost-effective removal of mercury from complex, contaminated water matrices in a wide pH range from strongly acidic to alkaline has been a challenge. Here, AlZn and AlFe alloys are investigated and a new process of synergistic reduction-amalgamation and in situ layered double hydroxide (SRA-iLDH) for highly efficient capture of aqueous Hg(II) is developed using AlZn alloys. The parameters include the pH values of 1-12, the Hg(II) concentrations of 10-1000 mg L-1, and the alloy's Zn concentrations of 20%, 50% and 70% and Fe concentrations of 10%, 20% and 50%. The initial rate of Hg(II) uptake by AlZn alloys decreases with increasing Zn concentration while the overall rate is not affected. Specifically, AlZn50 alloy removes >99.5% Hg(II) from 10 mg L-1 solutions at pH 1-12 in 5 min at a rate constant of 0.055 g mg-1 min-1 and achieves a capacity of 5000 mg g-1, being the highest value reported so far. The super-performance of AlZn alloy is attributed to multiple functions of chemical reduction, dual amalgamation, in situ LDH's surface complexation and adsorption, isomorphous substitution and intercalation. This study provides a simple and highly efficient approach for removing Hg(II) from complex water matrices.

Abstract
The substantial amount of mercury emissions from coal-fired flue gas causes severe environmental contamination. With the Minamata Convention now officially in force, it is critical to strengthen mercury pollution control. Existing activated carbon injection technologies suffer from poor desulfurization performance and risk secondary-release risks. Therefore, considering the potential industrial application of adsorbents, we selected cost-effective and readily available activated coke (AC) as the carrier in this study. Four metal selenides-copper, iron, manganese, and tin-were loaded onto the AC to overcome the application problems of existing technologies. After 120 min of adsorption, the CuSe/AC exhibited the highest efficiency in removing Hg0, surpassing 80% according to the experimental findings. In addition, the optimal adsorption temperature window was 30-120 °C, the maximum adsorption rate was 2.9 × 10-2 mg·g-1·h-1, and the effectiveness of CuSe/AC in capturing Hg0 only dropped by 5.2% in the sulfur-containing atmosphere. The physicochemical characterization results indicated that the AC surface had a uniform loading of CuSe with a nanosheet structure resembling polygon and that the Cu-to-Se atomic ratio was close to 1:1. Finally, two possible Hg0 reaction pathways on CuSe/AC were proposed. Moreover, it was elucidated that the highly selective binding of Hg0 with ligand-unsaturated Se- was the key factor in achieving high adsorption efficiency and sulfur resistance in the selenium-functionalized AC adsorbent. This finding offers substantial theoretical support for the industrial application of this adsorbent.

Abstract
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a major environmental problem caused by the release of acidic, toxic, and sulfate-rich water from mining sites. This study aimed to develop novel adsorbents for the removal of chromium (Cr(VI)), cadmium (Cd(II)), and lead (Pb(II)) from simulated and actual AMD using hybrid ion-exchange resins embedded with hydrous ferric oxide (HFO). Two types of resins were synthesized: anionic exchange resin (HAIX-HFO) for Cr(VI) removal and cationic exchange resin (HCIX-HFO) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal. The resins were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed the presence of HFO particles. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted under acidic and sulfate-enhanced conditions to evaluate the adsorption capacity and kinetics of the resins. It was found that both resins exhibited high adsorption efficiencies and fast adsorption rates for their respective metal ions. To explore the potential adsorption on actual AMD, HCIX-HFO demonstrated significant removal of some metal ions. The saturated HCIX-HFO resin was regenerated using NaCl, and a high amount of the adsorbed Cd(II) and Pb(II) was recovered. This study demonstrates that HFO-embedded hybrid ion-exchange resins are promising adsorbents for treating AMD contaminated with heavy metals.

Abstract
In this study, we introduce an economically viable and scalable process for developing a novel covalent organic framework (COF), which is a cross-linked polymer. The resulting material, TzTFB-COF, is successfully functionalized with silver and copper nanoparticles, which show high adequacy in the degradation of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). For the synthesis of TzTFB-COF, s-tetrazine diamine (Tz) and 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (TFB) are chosen as building blocks, which exhibit a high density of nitrogen-containing sites. TzTFB-COF shows good chemical and thermal stability (>300 °C). For functionalization of TzTFB-COF with silver and copper nanoparticles, a solution infiltration technique is used. The composite materials, i.e., Ag@TzTFB-COF and Cu@TzTFB-COF, have been characterized using various spectroscopic and analytical techniques, which show high activity, high selectivity, and excellent chemical and thermal stability up to 350 °C. The silver and copper contents of Ag@TzTFB-COF and Cu@TzTFB-COF are determined to be 9.6 and 12.4 wt % by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The catalytic efficiency of the synthesized Ag@TzTFB-COF and Cu@TzTFB-COF materials is assessed in the context of catalyzing the hydrogenation of NACs. Experimental results reveal a remarkable catalytic performance when conducted in an aqueous medium, and notably, the materials demonstrate substantial potential for reusability across multiple catalytic cycles. The determined parameters for the catalytic hydrogenation reaction, i.e., the rate constants and Gibbs free energies, are found to be 0.0185 s-1 and 9.878 kJ/mol for Ag@TzTFB-COF and 0.0219 s-1 and 9.615 kJ/mol for Cu@TzTFB-COF. Thus, the catalytic reaction exhibits characteristics of endothermic, endergonic, and nonspontaneous nature.

Abstract
In recent years, a variety of adsorbents have been developed for Hg2+ removal. However, these adsorbents are unsatisfactory for adsorption due to narrow and irregular pore channels or poor adsorption capacity and low stability. Therefore, it is worth exploring a porous Hg2+ adsorbent material with high adsorption performance and stability. In this study, a benzothiadiazole-based nonbranching functionalized covalent organic framework (COF) material (TPS-COF) by one-step synthesis was reported, which exhibited a high specific surface area of 1564 m2 g-1, high crystallinity and stability attributed to its high conjugated linkage structure of benzothiadiazole. In addition, due to the rich S and N elements of the benzothiadiazole unit, it exhibited excellent adsorption performance on Hg2+, including excellent adsorption amount (1040 mg g-1), high initial adsorption rate (448 mg g-1 min-1) and very short adsorption equilibrium time (10 min), with an efficient removal rate of Hg2+ in the pH range of 2-8. After desorption, the TPS-COF still retained good pore stability, adsorption capacity, and reusability. Such a one-step synthetic unbranched functionalization strategy provides further insights to achieve a good balance between the high crystallinity, functionality and stability of COFs.

Abstract
As typical environmental endocrine disruptors and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water supplies can cause great harm to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, magnetic covalent organic framework composites Fe3O4@COF-300 were synthesized by the hydrothermal method and used to remove bisphenol A and ibuprofen from water. Fe3O4@COF-300 could be rapidly separated from the matrix by external magnetic fields, and could selectively adsorb bisphenol A and ibuprofen in the presence of coexisting compounds such as phenol, Congo red, and amino black 10B. The removal efficiency of ibuprofen was 96.12-98.52% at pH in the range of 2-4 and that of bisphenol A was 92.18-95.62% at pH in the range of 2-10. The adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir model, and was a spontaneous endothermic process with the maximum adsorption amounts of 173.31 and 303.03 mg∙g-1, respectively. The material presented favorable stability and reusability, and the removal efficiency of bisphenol A and ibuprofen after 5 cycles was still over 92.15% and 89.29%, respectively. Therefore, the prepared composite Fe3O4@COF-300 exhibited good performance in the adsorption of bisphenol A and ibuprofen in water.

Abstract
Previous researches of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown their potential as fluorescent probes, but the regulation of their optical properties and recognition characteristics still remains a challenge, and most of reports required complicated post-decoration to improve the sensing performance. In this context, we propose a novel in-situ strategy to construct uracil-conjugated COFs and modulate their fluorescence properties for sensitive and selective mercury(II) detection. By using 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) and 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)pyrene (TAPPy) as fundamental blocks and 5-aminouraci (5-AU) as the functional monomer, a series of COFs (Py-COFs and Py-U-COFs-1 to Py-U-COFs-5) with tunable fluorescence were solvothermally synthesized through an in-situ Schiff base reaction. The π-conjugated framework serves as a signal reporter, the evenly and densely distributed uracil acts as a mercury(II) receptor, and the regular pores (channels) make the rapid and sensitive detection of the mercury(II) possible. In this research, we manage to regulate the crystalline structure, the fluorescence properties, and the sensing performance of COFs by simply changing the molar ratio of precursors. We expect this research to open up a new strategy for effective and controllable construction of functionalized COFs for environmental analysis.

Abstract
Heavy metal contamination in water is a growing threat, endangering the environmental stability. Mercury (Hg) is one of the most lethal heavy metals damaging the immune and nervous system irreversibly. A novel synthetic route to prepare bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanoparticles in presence of the surfactant Pluronic (P123) was illustrated in this work. The sorption of Hg (II) by the nanoparticles was investigated. The surfactant assisted nanoparticles showed enhanced surface area and potential compared to the unmodified ones. The effects of adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration, and temperature were investigated. The maximum Hg (II) adsorption capacity for the surfactant enhanced Bi2S3 was 832 mg/g at 303 K and pH 5. The distribution coefficient (Kd) of the order ∼106 ml/g indicated high selectivity of the synthesized adsorbent toward mercury ions. Chemisorption was identified to be the dominant mechanism of adsorption. The adsorbent also showed excellent reusability (>95%) after 5 cycles. The transport parameters involved in the adsorption, the effective pore diffusivity (Dp: 7.36 × 10-12 m2/s) and the mass transfer coefficient (kf: 1.52 × 10-6 m/s) were estimated from a first principle-based model.

Abstract
Membrane technology has shown a viable potential in conversion of liquid-waste or high-salt streams to fresh waters and resources. However, the non-adjustability pore size of traditional membranes limits the application of ion capture due to their low selectivity for target ions. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have become a promising candidate for construction of advanced ion separation membranes for ion resource recovery due to their low density, large surface area, tunable channel structure, and tailored functionality. This tutorial review aims to analyze and summarize the progress in understanding ion capture mechanisms, preparation processes, and applications of COF-based membranes. First, the design principles for target ion selectivity are illustrated in terms of theoretical simulation of ions transport in COFs, and key properties for ion selectivity of COFs and COF-based membranes. Next, the fabrication methods of diverse COF-based membranes are classified into pure COF membranes, COF continuous membranes, and COF mixed matrix membranes. Finally, current applications of COF-based membranes are highlighted: desalination, extraction, removal of toxic metal ions, radionuclides and lithium, and acid recovery. This review presents promising approaches for design, preparation, and application of COF-based membranes in ion selectivity for recovery of ionic resources.

Abstract
Mercury represents one of the major toxic pollutants in water that affect human and ecosystem. Extensive efforts have been globally invested to remove mercury using various chemical and electrochemical approaches. In this study, I propose the use of bipolar electrochemistry for the first time for mercury depollution process. Mercury(II) is removed from aqueous solutions by direct electrodeposition on millimeter scale graphite rods held in a bipolar setup. By adjusting the strength of the applied electric field and the number of the graphite rods the efficiency of the system can be controlled. This wireless technique allows the use of multiple graphite rod arrays within the bulk cell which resulted in high removal efficiency (98 %) of Hg2+ ions from the polluted solution. The method is straightforward, green, and efficient. The concept can be adapted to remove other heavy metal ions or electrochemically active contaminants from polluted water as long as their reduction potentials are within the water stability window.

Abstract
Fabricating two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based unique composites is an effective way to boost the overall physical and chemical properties, which will be helpful for the efficient and fast capture of elemental mercury (Hg0) over a wide temperature range. Herein, we constructed a defect-rich Cu2WS4 nano-homojunction decorated on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with abundant S vacancies. Highly well-dispersed and uniform Cu2WS4 nanoparticles were immobilized on COFs strongly via an ion pre-anchored strategy, consequently exhibiting enhanced Hg0 removal performance. The saturation adsorption capacity of Cu2WS4@COF composites (21.60 mg·g-1) was 9 times larger than that of Cu2WS4 crystals, which may be ascribed to more active S sites exposed in hybrid interfaces formed in the Cu2WS4 nano-homojunction and between Cu2WS4 nanoparticles and COFs. More importantly, such hybrid materials reduced adsorption deactivation at high temperatures, having a wide operating temperature range (from 40 to 200 °C) owing to the thermostability of active S species immobilized by both physical confined and chemical interactions in COFs. Accordingly, this work not only provides an effective method to construct uniform TMD-based sorbents for mercury capture but also opens a new realm of advanced COF hybrid materials with designed functionalities.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of organic crystalline porous materials discovered in the early 21st century that have become an attractive class of emerging materials due to their high crystallinity, intrinsic porosity, structural regularity, diverse functionality, design flexibility, and outstanding stability. However, many chemical and physical properties strongly depend on the presence of metal ions in materials for advanced applications, but metal-free COFs do not have these properties and are therefore excluded from such applications. Metalated COFs formed by combining COFs with metal ions, while retaining the advantages of COFs, have additional intriguing properties and applications, and have attracted considerable attention over the past decade. This review presents all aspects of metalated COFs, from synthetic strategies to various applications, in the hope of promoting the continued development of this young field.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan (CS) film containing covalent organic frameworks (COFs) immobilized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were developed for food packaging with improved antibacterial activities and film properties. COFs-AgNPs were fabricated via in-situ synthesis of immobilizing AgNPs on COFs. Transmission electron microscope, Zeta potential, X-ray diffraction, element mapping and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of COFs-AgNPs, and COFs-AgNPs showed superior antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Furthermore, the as-prepared COFs-AgNPs composite was further used to fabricate CS composite films (CS/COFs-AgNPs) by a solution casting method. The findings showed that the tensile strength of the nanocomposite films enhanced dramatically with the increase of the COFs-AgNPs content, while the UV-visible light barrier property, water swelling and solubility properties, and water vapor permeability (WVP) decreased significantly. Not only that, the CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films also showed outstanding antibacterial activity and effectively prolonged the storage time of white crucian carp (Carassius auratus). As a result, CS/COFs-AgNPs nanocomposite films show great potential in active food packaging.

Abstract
Global population growth and water resource scarcity are significant social problems currently being studied by many researchers focusing on finding new materials for water treatment. The aim is to obtain quality water suitable for drinking and industrial consumption. In this sense, an emergent class of crystalline porous materials known as Covalent-Organic Frameworks (COFs) offers a wide range of possibilities since their structures can be designed on demand for specific applications. Indeed, in the last decade, many efforts have been made for their use in water treatment. This perspective article aims to overview the state-of-the-art COFs collecting the most recent results in the field for water detection of pollutants and water treatment. After the introduction, where we overview the classical design strategies on COF design and synthesis for obtaining chemically stable COFs, we summarize the different experimental methodologies used for COFs processing in the form of supported and free-standing membranes and colloids. Finally, we describe the use of COFs in processes involving the detection of pollutants in water and wastewater treatment, such as the capture of organic compounds, heavy metals, and dyes, the degradation of organic pollutants, as well as in desalination processes. Finally, we provide a perspective on the field and the potential technological use of these novel materials.

Abstract
Developing functionalized 3D covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) is critical to broaden their potential applications. However, the introduction of specific functionality in 3D COFs remains a great challenge because most of the functional groups are not compatible with the synthesis conditions. Herein, for the first time 3D thioether-based COFs (JUC-570 and JUC-571) for mercury (Hg2+ ) removal from aqueous solution is reported. These 3D thioether-based COFs prepared by the bottom-up approach display high Hg2+ uptakes (972 mg g-1 for JUC-570 and 970 mg g-1 for JUC-571 at pH = 5), fast adsorption kinetics (distribution coefficient Kd value of 2.29 × 107 mL g-1 for JUC-570 and 2.07 × 107 mL g-1 for JUC-571), and favorable selectivity. In particular, JUC-570 is periodically decorated with isopropyl groups around imine bonds that markedly improve its chemical stability and effectively prevent the pore collapse, and thus endows high Hg2+ adsorption capacity (619 mg g-1 ) and excellent cycle performance even at pH = 1. This study not only puts forward a new route to construct stable functionalized 3D COFs, but also promotes their potential applications in areas related to the environment.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks comprise a unique class of functional materials that has recently emerged as a versatile tool for energy-related, photocatalytic, environmental, and electrochromic device applications. A plethora of structures can be designed and implemented through a careful selection of ligands and functional units. On the other hand, porous materials for heavy metal absorption are constantly on the forefront of materials science due to the significant health issues that arise from the release of the latter to aquatic environments. In this critical review, we provide insights on the correlation between the structure of functional covalent organic frameworks and their heavy metal absorption. The elements we selected were Pb, Hg, Cr, Cd, and As metal ions, as well as radioactive elements, and we focused on their removal with functional networks. Finally, we outline their advantages and disadvantages compared to other competitive systems such as zeolites and metal organic frameworks (MOFs), we analyze the potential drawbacks for industrial scale applications, and we provide our outlook on the future of this emerging field.

Abstract
Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are an exciting new class of microporous polymers with unprecedented properties in organic material chemistry. They are generally built from rigid, geometrically defined organic building blocks resulting in robust, covalently bonded crystalline networks that extend in two or three dimensions. Abstract
Developing new materials and novel technologies for the highly efficient treatment of toxic organic pollutants is highly desirable. Chemical reduction based on heterogeneous substrate/noble metal catalysts and the reducing agent NaBH4 has become an effective method in recent years. Here, a spherical covalent organic framework (SCOF) was designed to provide basic sites for Ag ions, by which small Ag NPs were immobilized on the SCOF to form Ag NPs@SCOF microspheres. The prepared microspheres exhibited a high catalytic reduction ability toward 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). An optimized permeation flux of 2000 L m-2 h-1 (LMH) and a more than 99% 4-NP reduction efficiency were obtained with flow-through experiments, which are far better than the reported results (below 200 LMH). Moreover, the microspheres could maintain stable catalytic performance under a continuous flow-through process. Our work provides an efficient material and technology that can be applied to easily treat toxic organic pollutants.

Abstract
Gold nanorods (AuNRs) are promising nanoscale materials for several technological and biomedical applications. The physicochemical properties of AuNRs, including size, shape and surface features, are crucial factors affecting their cytotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the effects of different aspect ratios of AuNRs (1.90, 2.35, 3.25 and 3.50) at concentrations of 2 and 10 μg mL-1 on their cytotoxicity and cellular uptake in green algae Raphidocelis subcaptata. The experiment was performed in oligotrophic freshwater medium in a growth chamber with constant agitation of 80 rpm under controlled conditions (120 μEm-2s-1 illumination; 12:12h light dark cycle and constant temperature of 22 ± 2 °C). The algal growth was monitored daily for 96 h via electronic absorbance scanning at 600-750 nm. Oxidative stress, cell viability and autofluorescence were evaluated using a flow cytometer. Oxidative stress quantified by loading cultures with the fluorescent dye 2', 7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate. To assess algal cell viability, propidium iodide was selected as the fluorescent probe. Our results indicated that the aspect ratio of AuNRs mediates their biological effects in green algae R. subcaptata. A positive correlation between oxidative stress and increase of aspect ratio was found at concentration of 10 μg mL-1. Higher cytotoxicity and mortality were observed for algae incubated with higher aspect ratios AuNRs (3.50). These findings may be useful to understand the impact of the AuNRs in aquatic environments, contributing to ecosystem management and nanomaterials regulation.

Abstract
In this research, recycled polyacrylonitrile fibers (PANFs) acquired from the textile recycling process were amino-functionalized in one simple step by means of ethylenediamine (EDA). The amino-functionalized polyacrylonitrile fibers (AF-PANFs) were utilized for adsorption of Hg(II) ions from aquatic media. Temperature and contact time during the synthesis were optimized by the Central Composite Design (CCD) method. FE-SEM, EDS, BET, and FT-IR analysis, and pHZPC measurement were conducted to characterize the features of the AF-PANFs. The average diameter of raw fiber was 20 μm, which increased 20 percent after functionalizing. The impact of independent parameters on the adsorption process was investigated using the Box-Behnken Design (BBD) method during the batch experiments. The column tests were conducted in a semi-continuous system with the removal efficiency of over 99% for various initial concentrations after specific cycles. Freundlich, Langmuir, UT, Redlich-Peterson, and Temkin isotherm models were employed to analyze the relation between the final concentration of Hg(II) (Co) and the equilibrium adsorption capacity (qe) of the AF-PANFs. According to the isotherm models and experimental results, the maximum qe of the AF-PANFs was 1116 mg g-1 at initial Hg(II) concentration of 850 mg L-1, contact time of 120 min, solution pH of 6, and at 40 °C. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies illustrated the approximate equilibrium time and endothermicity or exothermicity of the process. Regeneration of the AF-PANFs was accomplished for seven times without efficiency drop. The superb performance of the AF-PANFs in the presence of co-existing ions did not decline.

Abstract
The selective removal and recovery of silver ions from an aqueous solution is necessary, owing to the toxicity, persistency, and recoverable value. Herein, we first reported that silver ions could be selectively removed from an acidic solution by utilizing redox-active covalent organic framework (COF) materials as an adsorbent, resulting in the loading of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) with a narrow size distribution onto the framework simultaneously. The redox-active COF not only showed promising performance in adsorbing silver ions but also had a high selectivity at a low pH value. Subsequently, it was found that the N sites of amine groups within the framework took responsibility for the Ag NP generation after the systematic investigation on the redox adsorption mechanism. Furthermore, the recycled Ag@COF materials could be further used as new adsorbents to remove Hg(II) ions from water via NPs as a "bridge", exhibiting ultrahigh atomic utilization (>100%). Accordingly, this work not only provides a novel insight for the use of redox-active COF in the removal of metal ions but also opens a new field for designing of functionalized COF for their potential application in diverse areas.
