Monitoring the mobility of heavy metals and risk assessment in mine-affected soils after stabilization

Assessment of effectiveness in stabilization/solidification of arsenic-contaminated soil: long-term leaching test and geophysical measurement

This study focused on evaluating the effectiveness of stabilizer/binding agents in immobilizing arsenic (As) in contaminated soil using both geochemical and geophysical monitoring methods. The effluent from the stabilizer/binding agent's application and control columns was analyzed, and the status of the columns was monitored using electrical resistivity (ER) and induced polarization (IP) methods. As stabilizers/binder, acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS) and steel slag (SS) were used, which delayed As and Ca leaching time and significantly reduced As leaching amount. Determination coefficients for As and Fe leaching exhibited elevated values (control column, R2 = 0.955; AMDS column, R2 = 0.908; and SS column, R2 = 0.833). A discernible decline in the concentration of leached Fe was accompanied by a corresponding reduction in IP. The determination coefficients correlating IP and Fe leaching remained substantial (control column, R2 = 0.768; AMDS column, R2 = 0.807; and SS column, R2 = 0.818). Such IP measurements manifest as instrumental tools in monitoring and assessing the retention capacity of applied stabilizer/binding agents in As-affected soils, thereby furnishing crucial data for the enduring surveillance of stabilization/solidification locales. This research posits a swift and continuous monitoring method for solidification/stabilization locales in situ.

Cadmium, lead and arsenic contamination in an abandoned nonferrous metal smelting site in southern China: Chemical speciation and mobility

The investigation of chemical speciation of primary toxic metal(loid)s (Cd, Pb, and As) in soil profile in nonferrous metal smelting site is a key to the assessment of their mobility characteristics and formulation of subsequent remediation strategy. In this study, 74 soil samples were collected at 12 different soil profiles; soil physio-chemical properties and total content of Cd, Pb and As and corresponding chemical speciation were also determined. The results showed that the mean total concentration followed the order of Pb > As > Cd. A large proportion of Pb, Cd and As were accumulated in upper soil profiles (depth < 3 m). Heavy pollution of Pb, Cd and As were observed in the whole soil profile at the area of fuel oil storage tank (ZY6) and lead smelting area (ZY8). The dominant fraction of Cd was exchangeable fraction (F1); Pb was dominant in Fe/Mn oxides-bound fraction (F3) in most cases; Crystallized Fe/Al hydrous oxides bound fraction (F4) generally accounted for a large proportion of As. Mobility factor (MF) followed the order Cd > As > Pb, indicating that Cd was the most mobile element in soil profiles. Pearson correlation analysis found that MF_Cd was significantly positively correlated to soil silt; the F4 fraction percentage of As was significantly positively correlated to soil redox potential (Eh). Additionally, MF_Cd/Pb was found to be positively correlated to crystalline iron (Fe_c), while negatively correlated to amorphous iron (Fe_o). The findings reported in this study, on the basis of distribution characteristics of chemical speciation could provide a new solution for future soil remediation at the site. Long-term solutions to metal(loid)s pollution might be offered by microbial-assisted soil washing technique that promotes the transformation of Fe/Mn oxides-bound fraction and organic/sulfide-bound fraction.

Characteristics and Risk of Forest Soil Heavy Metal Pollution in Western Guangdong Province, China

West Guangdong is an important ecological barrier in Guangdong province, so understanding the spatial patterns and sources of heavy metal pollution of forest soil in this region is of great significance for ecological protection. In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) in forest soil were determined. Geostatistics, single-factor pollution index (PI), potential ecological risk index (RI), principal component analysis (PCA), and Pearson’s correlation analysis were used to evaluate and analyze the characteristics of heavy metal pollution of forest soil. The results showed that the average concentration did not exceed the critical value. Cd, Pb, and Cu were enriched in southwest Xinxing County, while Zn and Ni were enriched in most areas of the Yunan and Yuncheng districts. Two groups of heavy metals from different sources were identified by PCA and a correlation analysis. Cd, Pb, and Cu in their respective enrichment areas were mainly from marble and cement production, whereas Zn and Ni were primarily from transportation and chemical fertilizer. Most of the study area was safe or slightly polluted while the heavy metal-enriched areas were moderately to severely polluted. The potential ecological risk was at a lower level in the study area but moderate in southwest Xinxing County. In summary, human factors impact the spatial patterns and ecological risks of heavy metals in forest soil. This study provides a scientific basis for forest soil pollution control and ecological protection.

Accumulation, regional distribution, and environmental effects of Sb in the largest Hg-Sb mine area in Qinling Orogen, China

In this study, knowledge gaps on Sb concentration in rocks, ores, tailings, soil, river water, sediments, and crops of mine areas were identified and discussed in terms of contamination levels, spatial distribution, and environmental effects. Accordingly, Xunyang Hg-Sb mine, the largest Hg-Sb deposit in China as research region in this study, field sampling and laboratory analysis were conducted. The results showed elevated concentrations of Sb in the soil, sediment, and river water. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the main minerals of the rocks were quartz, dolomite, calcite, and margarite. Based on the TESCAN integrated mineral analyzer analysis, the main ore minerals in the Gongguan mine were dolomite (93.97%), cinnabar (2.50%), stibnite (2.48%), calcite (0.38%), and quartz (0.38%). The μ-XRF analysis indicated that Sb distribution was similar to those of S and O, instead of those of Hg and As. The clear spatial variation of Sb concentration in environmental media, mines, tailings, and settling ponds affected Sb accumulation. Actinobacteriota, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota, and Chloroflexi were the dominant phyla in the soil. Patescibacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bdellovibrionota were negatively correlated with Sb in the soil (p < 0.05). Exposure to Sb through maize grain and cabbage consumption poses serious non-carcinogenic health risk for residents. This work provides a scientific basis for the environmental quality assessment of Sb mine areas and development of applicable guidelines.

Remediation of zinc-contaminated soils by using the two-step washing with citric acid and water-soluble chitosan

Remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil with appropriate washing agents is crucial to the decline in the harmfulness of contaminated soil by heavy metals to the environment and human health. In this study, citric acid (CA) and water-soluble chitosan (WSCS) as natural and degradable washing agents were used to remove Zn in the soil by two-step washing method. Results indicated that the two-step washing with CA and WSCS were found to be suitable for the removal of Zn from the contaminated soils, which significantly decreased the total concentration of Zn in the soil. After the remediation process with two-step soil washing, the contents of Zn in different chemical species decreased, especially for the carbonate-bound fraction. Therefore, the two-step soil washing with CA and WSCS was advisable for the remediation of Zn-contaminated soils. The washing mechanism could include the acid dissolution, ion exchange and complexation reaction between zinc ions and functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine and amide groups. This study provided the theoretical support for the exploitation and application of suitable washing agents used for the remediation of contaminated soils by heavy metals.

Heavy metal accumulation by roadside vegetation and implications for pollution control

Vehicular emissions cause heavy metal pollution and exert negative impacts on environment and roadside vegetation. Wild plants growing along roadsides are capable of absorbing considerable amounts of heavy metals; thus, could be helpful in reducing heavy metal pollution. Therefore, current study inferred heavy metal absorbance capacity of some wild plant species growing along roadside. Four different wild plant species, i.e., Acacia nilotica L., Calotropis procera L., Ricinus communis L., and Ziziphus mauritiana L. were selected for the study. Leaf samples of these species were collected from four different sites, i.e., Control, New Lahore, Nawababad and Fatehabad. Leaf samples were analyzed to determine Pb2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Mn2+ and Fe3+ accumulation. The A. nilotica, Z. mauritiana and C. procera accumulated significant amount of Pb at New Lahore site. Similarly, R. communis and A. nilotica accumulated higher amounts of Mn, Zn and Fe at Nawababad and New Lahore sites compared to the rest of the species. Nonetheless, Z. mauritiana accumulated higher amounts of Ni at all sites compared with the other species included in the study. Soil surface contributed towards the uptake of heavy metals in leaves; therefore, wild plant species should be grown near the roadsides to control heavy metals pollution. Results revealed that wild plants growing along roadsides accumulate significant amounts of heavy metals. Therefore, these species could be used to halt the vehicular pollution along roadsides and other polluted areas.

Temporal variations of levels and sources of health risk associated with heavy metals in road dust in Beijing from May 2016 to April 2018

To analyze the temporal variations of heavy metals, health risk, and source-specific health risk, 24 road dust samples were collected from Beijing in each month in two years. The temporal variations of Hg, Pb, and Ni were higher than other heavy metals. Most heavy metals reached their highest concentrations either in winter or in spring, then the concentrations decreased and reached the lowest values in autumn. Human health risk assessment (HHRA) model showed that As, Cr, and Ni might pose cautionary carcinogenic risk (CR) to children (CR > 10^-6). CR for adults were only 0.15 to 0.19 times of that for children. Four sources were identified based on positive matrix factorization model and HHRA model, they were traffic exhaust, fuel combustion, construction, and use of pesticides and fertilizers. Influenced by the difference of carcinogenicity of heavy metals, traffic exhaust contributed the largest to heavy metals (36.02%, over 42.24% higher than other sources), while contributions of fuel combustion to CR (36.95%) was similar to traffic exhaust (37.17%). Monte-Carlo simulation showed that the 95th percentile of probability density functions of CR posed by Cr and Ni from each source were 9.90 × 10^-5 to 2.64 × 10^-4, posing cautionary carcinogenic risk to children. The seasonal change of CR varied among different sources. CR from use of pesticides and fertilizers in spring was 35.06 times of that in winter, and that from fuel combustion in winter was 1.15-2.40 times of that in other seasons. CR from each source was sensitive to ingestion rate and skin adherence factor.
