Formation and degradation mechanisms of CX3R-type oxidation by-products during cobalt catalyzed peroxymonosulfate oxidation: The roles of Co3+ and SO4·

Visible-light-assisted persulfate activation by SnS2/MIL-88B(Fe) Z-scheme heterojunction for enhanced degradation of ibuprofen

Herein, a highly efficient Z-scheme SnS₂/MIL-88B (Fe) (SnSFe) heterojunction was successfully synthesized to use both as photocatalysts and persulfate (PS) activator for ibuprofen (IBP) degradation. Flower-liked SnS₂ was uniformly loaded on MIL-88B (Fe), and SnSFe retained the original polyhedral morphology of MIL-88B (Fe). The highest removal of IBP was achieved in the presence of SnSFe with 0.5% SnS₂(SnSFe0.5). Characteristic results and density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the enhanced degradation of IBP was due to the difference in Fermi energy levels of SnS₂ and MIL-88B (Fe) leading to electrons transferred from SnS₂ to MIL-88B (Fe), and SnO bond was formed in SnSFe. , OH and O₂^- were the main active species in SnSFe0.5/PS/visible light system. Z-scheme heterojunction of SnSFe was constructed to propose the degradation mechanism. This research revealed that the synergism of photocatalysis and PS activation using SnS₂/Fe-based MOFs composites possessed great potentials in wastewater remediation.

Chloride-Enhanced Removal of Ammonia Nitrogen and Organic Matter from Landfill Leachate by a Microwave/Peroxymonosulfate System

Landfill leachate contains not only high concentrations of refractory organic matter and ammonia nitrogen, but also high concentrations of chloride ions (Cl−). The modification of reactive species of the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation system by Cl− and its priority sequence for the removal of NH4+-N and organic matter from landfill leachate remain unclear. This study investigated the removal characteristics of NH4+-N and organic matter in the microwave (MW)/PMS system with high Cl− content. The results show that increasing Cl− concentration significantly improves the production of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in the MW/PMS system under acidic conditions, and that the thermal and non-thermal effects of MW irradiation have an important influence on the HOCl produced by PMS activation. The maximum cumulative concentration of HOCl was 748.24 μM after a reaction time of 2 min. The formation paths of HOCl are (i) SO4•− formed by the MW/PMS system interacting with Cl− and HO•, and (ii) the nucleophilic addition reaction of PMS and Cl−. Moreover, the high concentration of HOCl produced by the system can not only remove NH4+-N in situ, but also interact with PMS to continuously generate Cl• as an oxidant to participate in the reaction with pollutants (e.g., NH4+-N and organic matter). Common aqueous substances (e.g., CO32−, HCO3−, NO3−, and humic acid) in landfill leachate will compete with NH4+-N for reactive species in the system, and will thereby inhibit its removal to a certain extent. It was found that when NH4+-N and leachate DOM co-exist in landfill leachates, they would compete for reactive species, and that humic acid-like matter was preferentially removed, leading to the retention of fulvic acid-like matter. It is hoped that this study will provide theoretical support for the design and optimization of methods for removing NH4+-N and organic matter from landfill leachate with high chloride ion content.

Kinetics and Transformations of Diverse Dissolved Organic Matter Fractions with Sulfate Radicals

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) scavenges sulfate radicals (SO₄^•-), and SO₄^•--induced DOM transformations influence disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation when chlorination follows advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) used for pollutant destruction during water and wastewater treatment. Competition kinetics experiments and transient kinetics experiments were conducted in the presence of 19 DOM fractions. Second-order reaction rate constants for DOM reactions with SO₄^•- (k_DOM,SO4^•-) ranged from (6.38 ± 0.53) × 10⁶ M^-1 s^-1 to (3.68 ± 0.34) × 10⁷ M_C^-1 s^-1. k_DOM,SO4^•- correlated with specific absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA₂₅₄) (R² = 0.78) or total antioxidant capacity (R² = 0.78), suggesting that DOM with more aromatics and antioxidative moieties reacted faster with SO₄^•-. SO₄^•- exposure activated DBP precursors and increased carbonaceous DBP (C-DBP) yields (e.g., trichloromethane, chloral hydrate, and 1,1,1-trichloropropanone) in humic acid and fulvic acid DOM fractions despite the great reduction in their organic carbon, chromophores, and fluorophores. Conversely, SO₄^•--induced reactions reduced nitrogenous DBP yields (e.g., dichloroacetonitrile and trichloronitromethane) in wastewater effluent organic matter and algal organic matter without forming more C-DBP precursors. DBP formation as a function of SO₄^•- exposure (concentration × time) provides guidance on optimization strategies for SO₄^•--based AOPs in realistic water matrices.
