Physicochemical reactions in e-waste recycling

Electronic waste (e-waste) recycling is becoming a global concern owing to its immense quantity, hazardous character and the potential loss of valuable metals. The many processes involved in e-waste recycling stem from a mixture of physicochemical reactions, and understanding the principles of these reactions can lead to more efficient recycling methods. In this Review, we discuss the principles behind photochemistry, thermochemistry, mechanochemistry, electrochemistry and sonochemistry for metal recovery, polymer decomposition and pollutant elimination from e-waste. We also discuss how these processes induce or improve reaction rates, selectivity and controllability of e-waste recycling based on thermodynamics and kinetics, free radicals, chemical bond energy, electrical potential regulation and more. Lastly, key factors, limitations and suggestions for improvements of these physicochemical reactions for e-waste recycling are highlighted, wherein we also indicate possible research directions for the future.

Nanogrinding/ethanol activation facilitating lignin fractionation for preparation of monodispersed lignin nanoparticles

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs), as one of green and sustainable biological macromolecules, have attracted great attention owing to their promising potentials in many valorized fields. However, the lignin heterogeneity seriously restricts the controllable preparation of LNPs. Herein, a facile nanogrinding activation combining anhydrous ethanol dissolution process was developed to efficiently homogenize lignin prior to gradient ethanol fractionation. Two lignin fractions were obtained from nanogrinding activation/ethanol dissolution followed by gradient ethanol fractionation: L-fractions and S-fractions. Therefore, monodispersed LNPs with unique concave hollow nanostructure and large particle size, and monodispersed LNPs with solid core nanostructure and small particle size were successfully prepared from L-fractions and S-fractions, respectively, via a GVL/water anti-solvent method. The proposed LNPs formation mechanisms facilitated by nanogrinding activation/ethanol dissolution treatment were demonstrated. This study put forwards a facile and green integrated approach for monodispersed LNPs preparation with controllable morphology and particle size.

Recent advances in nanoremediation: Carving sustainable solution to clean-up polluted agriculture soils

Agriculture is one of the foremost significant human activities, which symbolizes the key source for food, fuel and fibers. This activity results in a lot of ecological harms particularly with the excessive usage of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Different agricultural practices have remained industrialized to advance food production, due to the growth in the world population and to meet the food demand through the routine use of more effective fertilizers and pesticides. Soil is intensely embellished by environmental contamination and it can be stated as "universal incline." Soil pollution usually occurs from sewage wastes, accidental discharges or as byproducts of chemical residues of unrestrained production of numerous materials. Soil pollution with hazardous materials alters the physical, chemical, and biological properties, causing undesirable changes in soil fertility and ecosystem. Engineered nanomaterials offer various solutions for remediation of contaminated soils. Engineered nanomaterial-enable technologies are able to prevent the uncontrolled release of harmful materials into the environment along with capabilities to combat soil and groundwater borne pollutants. Currently, nanobiotechnology signifies a hopeful attitude to advance agronomic production and remediate polluted soils. Studies have outlined the way of nanomaterial applications to restore the eminence of the environment and assist the detection of polluted sites, along with potential remedies. This review focuses on the latest developments in agricultural nanobiotechnology and the tools developed to combat soil or land and or terrestrial pollution, as well as the benefits of using these tools to increase soil fertility and reduce potential toxicity.

Analysis of contaminants and their formation mechanism in the desiccation-dissociation process of organic impurity of waste glass

The recovery of waste glass is an important issue in the fields of social sustainable development and resource recovery. The removal of organic impurity is the first step in the recovery of waste glass. Currently, desiccation-dissociation technology is advised to remove the organic impurity from waste glass. However, the risks of the organic impurity desiccation-dissociation process of waste glass have not been reported in the literature. In this paper, the environmental risks of the organic impurity desiccation-dissociation process of waste glass were assessed. The assessment results indicated that none of TSP (0.143 mg/m³), PM₁₀ (0.090 mg/m³), heavy metals in air and residue after desiccation-dissociation were contaminated. However, the gas contained abundant organic contaminants, especially benzene, whose content was up to 5.26%. Molecular dynamics simulation and contaminant formation pathways analysis indicated that the formation of gaseous organic contaminants was because overmuch small molecular free radicals were generated at 200 °C and combined with each other. Hence, reducing the temperature of desiccation-dissociation, wearing gas masks, and placing organic gas contaminant absorption liquids are necessary protective measures. This paper provides scientific data for the green development of organic impurity desiccation-dissociation technology of waste glass. Meanwhile, this paper makes up for the shortage of the environmental information of the organic impurity desiccation-dissociation of waste glass.
