Self-indicating polymers: a pathway to intelligent materials

Self-indicating polymers have emerged as a promising class of smart materials that possess the unique ability to undergo detectable variations in their physical or chemical properties in response to various stimuli. This article presents an overview of the most important mechanisms through which these materials exhibit self-indication, including aggregation, phase transition, covalent and non-covalent bond cleavage, isomerization, charge transfer, and energy transfer. Aggregation is a prevalent mechanism observed in self-indicating polymers, where changes in the degree of molecular organization result in variations in optical or electrical properties. Phase transition-induced self-indication relies on the transformation between different phases, such as liquid-to-solid or crystalline-to-amorphous transitions, leading to observable changes in color or conductivity. Covalent bond cleavage-based self-indicating polymers undergo controlled degradation or fragmentation upon exposure to specific triggers, resulting in noticeable variations in their structural or mechanical properties. Isomerization is another crucial mechanism exploited in self-indicating polymers, where the reversible transformation between the different isomeric forms induces detectable changes in fluorescence or absorption spectra. Charge transfer-based self-indicating polymers rely on the modulation of electron or hole transfer within the polymer backbone, manifesting as changes in electrical conductivity or redox properties. Energy transfer is an essential mechanism utilized by certain self-indicating polymers, where energy transfer between chromophores or fluorophores leads to variations in the emission characteristics. Furthermore, this review article highlights the diverse range of applications for self-indicating polymers. These materials find particular use in sensing and monitoring applications, where their responsive nature enables them to act as sensors for specific analytes, environmental parameters, or mechanical stress. Self-indicating polymers have also been used in the development of smart materials, including stimuli-responsive coatings, drug delivery systems, food sensors, wearable devices, and molecular switches. The unique combination of tunable properties and responsiveness makes self-indicating polymers highly promising for future advancements in the fields of biotechnology, materials science, and electronics.

Manipulation of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer by electron-donor substitution for high performance fluoride ions sensing

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules has been using as a variety of functionalityled molecular systems. To investigate the relationship between the electron-donor substitution and luminescent properties of ESIPT luminogens, four 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl) benzothiazole derivatives with donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A)-structured were synthesized. The distinct fluorescence properties of them were found to be highly dependent on the electron-donor moiety (triphenylamine and anthracenyl), its substituent position (para and meta position) and solvent polarity. The M-TPA, P-En, and M-En showed ESIPT emission in organic solvents, while the P-TPA showed intramolecular charge transfer process (ICT) emission. It is due to the synergistic effect of the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and ESIPT, that M-TPA and M-En exhibited high solid-state quantum yields and large Stokes shifts. They were used as a probe for detecting F-, which resulted in rapid colorimetric, high sensitivity and good selectivity. The M-TPA was a turn-on fluorescent probe, which had the best detection property, and the limit of detection was as low as 11 nM. Because M-TPA displayed phenol anion emission in DMSO and F- causes the deprotonation of the M-TPA, which led to significant red shift of the absorption band and enhancement of fluorescence emission. This work provides a reliable strategy for designing high-performance fluorescent sensor via ESIPT manipulation.

A tert-Butyldiphenylsilyl-Containing Polyimide-Based Chemosensor for Sequential Detection of Fluoride Ions and Trace Water in Organic Solvents

A tert-butyldiphenylsilyl-containing polyimide (PI-OSi) has been established as a colorimetric and ratiometric chemosensor for rapid detecting fluoride ions (F-). The UV-vis absorbance ratio value (A322/A288) of PI-OSi in a DMF solution displays a wide linear range change to F- concentrations with a detection limit (DL) value of 2.13 μM. Additionally, adding incremental amounts of F- to a DMF solution of PI-OSi shows an immediate color change to yellow and finally to green from colorless. More interestingly, the resulting PI-OSi plus F- system (PI-OSi·F) could detect trace water in DMF. The A292/A322 value of PI-OSi·F almost linearly increases with low water content, which suggests convenient quantitative sensing of trace water content in DMF. The DL value of PI-OSi·F for sensing water in DMF is determined to be 0.00149% (v/v). The solution color of PI-OSi·F returns to colorless when the water content increases, indicating that PI-OSi·F can conveniently estimate water content in DMF by naked-eye detection. The detection mechanisms confirmed by an 1H NMR study and a DFT calculation involve a F--induced desilylation reaction of PI-OSi to form phenolate anion followed by protonation with trace water. Finally, PI-OSi film was fabricated for the colorimetric detection of F- and water in CH3CN.

"Lighting up" fluoride: cellular imaging and zebrafish model interrogations using a simple ESIPT-based mycophenolic acid precursor-based probe

The discovery and implementation of media that derive from bioinspired designs and bear optical readouts featuring large Stokes shifts are of continued interest to a wide variety of researchers and clinicians. Myco-F, a novel mycophenolic acid precursor-based probe features a cleavable tert-butyldimethylsiloxy group to allow for fluoride detection. Myco-F exhibits high selectivity and specificity towards F^- (Stokes shift = 120 nm). All measurements were performed in complete aqueous media (LOD=0.38 μM). Myco-F enables detection of fluoride ions in living HEK293 cells and localizes in the eye region (among other regions) of the zebrafish. DFT calculations support the proposed ESIPT working photomechanism.

Terbium-based metal-organic frameworks through energy transfer modulation for visual logical sensing zinc and fluorine ions

Zinc is the second most abundant trace element in the human central nervous system, which is closely related to various physiological activities in the human body. Fluoride ion is one of the most harmful elements in drinking water. Excessive intake of F^- may cause dental fluorosis, renal failure, or DNA damage. Therefore, it is urgent to develop sensors with high sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Zn²⁺ and F^- ions at the same time. In this work, a series of mixed lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) probes are synthesized using a simple method of in situ doping. The luminous color can be finely modulated by changing the molar ratio of Tb³⁺ and Eu³⁺ during synthesis. Benefiting from the unique energy transfer modulation mechanism, the probe has the continuous detection capability of zinc ions and fluoride ions. The detection of Zn²⁺ and F^- in a real environment shows that the probe has a good practical application prospect. The as-designed sensor at 262 nm excitation can sequentially detect Zn²⁺ concentrations ranging from 10^-8 to 10^-3 M (LOD = 4.2 nM) and F^- levels ranging from 10^-5 to 10^-3 M (LOD = 3.6 μM) with high selectivity. Based on different output signals, a simple Boolean logic gate device is constructed to realize intelligent visualization of Zn²⁺ and F^- monitoring.

Advances in electrospun nanofibrous membrane sensors for ion detection

Harmful metal ions and toxic anions produced in industrial processes cause serious damage to the environment and human health. Chemical sensors are used as an efficient and convenient detection method for harmful ions. Electrospun fiber membranes are widely used in the field of solid-state chemical sensors due to high specific surface area, high porosity, and strong adsorption. This paper reviews the solid-state chemical sensors based on electrospinning technology for the detection of harmful heavy metal ions and toxic anions in water over the past decade. These electrospun fiber sensors have different preparation methods, sensing mechanisms, and sensing properties. The preparation method can be completed by physical doping, chemical modification, copolymerization, surface adsorption and self-assembly combined with electrospinning, and the material can also be combined with organic fluorescent molecules, biological matrix materials and precious metal materials. Sensing performance aspects can also be manifested as changes in color and fluorescence. By comparing the literature, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of electrospinning technology in the field of ion sensing, and discuss the opportunities and challenges of electrospun fiber sensor research. We hope that this review can provide inspiration for the development of electrospun fiber sensors.
