Preparation of a rice straw-based green separation layer for efficient and persistent oil-in-water emulsion separation

Multifunctional Bagasse Foam with Improved Thermal Insulation and Flame Retardancy by a Borax-Induced Self-Assembly and Ambient Pressure Drying Technique

Cellulose foams are considered an effective alternative to plastic foam, because of their advantages of low density, high porosity, low thermal conductivity, and renewable nature. However, they still suffer from complex processing, poor mechanical properties, and flammability. As an agricultural waste, bagasse is rich in cellulose, which has attracted much attention. Inspired by the fact that borate ions can effectively enhance the strength of plant tissue by their cross-linking with polysaccharides, the present work designs and fabricates a series of multifunctional bagasse foams with robust strength and improved thermal insulation and flame retardancy via a unique borax-induced self-assembly and atmospheric pressure drying route using bagasse as a raw material, borate as a cross-linking agent, and chitosan as an additive. As a result, the optimized foam exhibits a high porosity (93.5%), a high hydrophobic water contact angle (150.4°), a low thermal conductivity (63.4 mW/(m·K) at 25 °C), and an outstanding flame retardancy. The present study provides a novel and inspiring idea for large-scale production of cellulose foams through an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach.

Sugarcane-based superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane for efficient oil-in-water emulsions separation

The development of ecological, low cost, easy preparation, especially high performance materials for emulsions separation is of great importance due to the rise in pollution of oil-water emulsions from industrial production and domestic waste. Straws as agricultural wastes, including plenty of hydrophilic groups and multi-level pore structures, can be prepared as biomass membranes for oil-water emulsion separation. Herein, a novel super-hydrophilic sugarcane-based (SHS) membrane was prepared using a facile and eco-friendly method including chemical treatment and freeze-drying. The as-prepared SHS membrane has unique wettabilities due to the hydrophilic property of the internal cellulose and the micro-nano pores, including superhydrophilicity (water contact angle of 0°) and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angles of over 150°). The SHS membrane has good durability and stability against ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, corrosion by acids and alkalis, mechanical abrasion and especially mould adhesion. Importantly, the SHS membrane can be used for separation of various oil-in-water emulsions, and exhibits excellent separation performances such as high separation efficiency (> 99 %) and good separation flux (above 891 L m-2 h-1 bar-1). The SHS membrane also exhibits excellent recyclability over 10 continuous separation cycles. Furthermore, the SHS membrane can be utilized to selectively absorb water from oils as a water absorbent material. Hence, SHS membrane is a promising and practical material for applications in treatment of wastewater containing oil-water emulsions.

Waste for Waste: Interface-Intensified Durable Superhydrophilic-Superoleophobic Collagen Fiber Membrane for Efficient Separation of Cationic Surfactant-Stabilized Oil-in-Water Emulsions

Cationic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions pose a significant challenge in separation due to the presence of surfactants. Herein, we develop a collagen-fiber-based CFM-PMDA-TiO2 membrane with unique infiltration properties capable of efficiently separating cationic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions by exploiting the charge-demulsification effect. The membrane exhibits superhydrophilic and submerged superoleophobic properties, making it highly suitable for separating a wide range of commercially available cationic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water microemulsions and nanoemulsions, which demonstrates an exceptional separation efficiency as high as 99.86% and an impressive flux of up to 1436.40 L m-2 h-1. Furthermore, even after a strong subjecting of the membrane to sandpaper abrasion and a full 15 time use, the separation efficacy of oil-in-water emulsions is retained, highlighting the durability, reusability, and economic viability. We propose that these features are enabled by the electrostatic interactions triggered from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic membrane intensified by the TiO2 on the unique collagen fiber membrane. Outcomes emphasize the versatility and potential of our membrane in addressing emulsified oily wastewater hurdles.

A comprehensive review on the behavior and evolution of oil droplets during oil/water separation by membranes

Membrane separation technology has significant advantages for treating oil-in-water emulsions. Understanding the evolution of oil droplets could reveal the interfacial and colloidal interactions, facilitate the design of advanced membranes, and improve the separation performances. This review on the characteristic behavior and evolution of oil droplets focuses on the advanced analytical techniques, and the subsequent fouling as well as demulsification effects during membrane separation. A detailed introduction is provided on microscopic observations and numerical simulations of the dynamic evolution of oil droplets, featuring real-time in-situ visualization and accurate reconstruction, respectively. Characteristic behaviors of these oil droplets include attachment, pinning, wetting, spreading, blockage, intrusion, coalescence, and detachment, which have been quantified by specific proposed parameters and criteria. The fouling process can be evaluated using Hermia and resistance models. The related adhesion force and intrusion pressure as well as droplet-droplet/membrane interfacial interactions can be accurately quantified using various force analysis methods and advanced force measurement techniques. It is encouraging to note that oil coalescence has been achieved through various effects such as electrostatic interactions, mechanical actions, Laplace pressure/surface free energy gradients, and synergistic effects on functional membranes. When oil droplets become destabilized and coalesce into larger ones, the functional membranes can overcome the limitations of size-sieving effect to attain higher separation efficiency. This not only bypasses the trade-off between permeability and rejection, but also significantly reduces membrane fouling. Finally, the challenges and potential research directions in membrane separation are proposed. We hope this review will support the engineering of advanced materials for oil/water separation and research on interface science in general.

Diethylenetriamine modified biological waste for disposing oily wastewater

Oily wastewater produced in the process of oil extraction has a potential threat to the environment. In this paper, diethylenetriamine was used to modify rice straw powder (RSP) by a solvent-free strategy, and the obtained product (AM-RSP) was utilized to dispose oily wastewater. AM-RSP was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FT-IR) and BET. The factors affecting the demulsification performance (DP) such as dosage, salinity and pH value were detailly investigated. The results indicated that light transmittance (E_T) and oil removal rate (E_R) of separated water could reach 93.5% and 96.5%, respectively, within 40 min with 150 mg/L of AM-RSP at room temperature. Also, AM-RSP had a good salt resistance. In addition, three-phase contact angle (TCA), formation of interfacial film, interfacial activity, dynamic interfacial tension (IFT), coalescence time of droplets and zeta potential were adopted to probe the demulsification mechanism.

Phytic acid and graphene oxide functionalized sponge with special-wettability and electronegativity for oil-in-water emulsion separation in single-step

Developing an emulsion separation material with one-step in-situ purifying capability and improved security in applications, especially for subsequent scale-up, is valuable but remains a challenge. Herein, the amphiphilic sponge (PA@RGO@MS) was prepared via impregnation and in-situ growth of the negatively charged hydrophilic phytic acid (PA) and the hydrophobic reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on the surface of the melamine sponge (MS) and applied in emulsion purification. The mechanics, wettability, absorption performance of the PA@RGO@MS were analyzed to identify its potential for stable demulsification. Results show that the PA@RGO@MS could purify emulsions (turbidity removal rate = 99.7%; TOC removal rate = 94.14%) in-situ in one step by simple shock absorption, profited from the hydrophilic and demulsification capability of PA, oil absorption of RGO, and wide reaction and storage space of MS. Targeting the emulsion with distinct properties (density, viscosity, and concentration) of the oil phase, the PA@RGO@MS could efficiently enable the purification. Meanwhile, the powerful flame-retardant granted from PA ensures the safe shipment and storage of sponges. The favorable cyclability (turbidity removal rate > 98.5% and TOC removal rate > 89.5% after 10 cycles) and diversified operating modes enhance the practical value of the PA@RGO@MS.

Structured sludge derived multifunctional layer for simultaneous separation of oil/water emulsions and anions contaminants

The effective treatment of complex oily wastewater is of great significance but still a considerable challenge, since single-function, expensive reagents, and complicated process have emerged as shackles for practical applications. Herein, with the objective to waste-control-waste, we proposed a facile and sustainable strategy to fabricate a low-cost multifunctional layer from hazardous waste aluminum sludge (WAS) for complex oily wastewater management. The as-designed layered double oxides/WAS (LDOs/WAS) layer with three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical rough surface exhibited excellent underwater superoleophobicity even under corrosive conditions and low adhesion to oil without any chemical modification reagent treatment. Significantly, the layer can be applied to gravity-directed simultaneous efficient oil-in-water emulsions and anions (taking phosphate as an example) separation with a separation efficiency for emulsion and phosphate up to 99.4% and 99.1%, respectively, and a high separation flux of above 2585 L m^-2 h^-1. Notably, the flux can be controlled simply and flexibly by adjusting the thickness of the layer. Furthermore, the layer also displayed excellent thermal stability, chemical stability, durability and recyclability. Therefore, this work not only presents a promising approach to design sludge-based multifunctional materials for complex oily wastewater remediation, but also shows great potential and value in environmental pollutions reduction and industrial applications.

A superwetting stainless steel mesh with Janus surface charges for efficient emulsion separation

Design of charged materials for demulsification of ionic surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions is emerging in recent years. Herein, a superwetting stainless steel mesh with Janus surface charges (Janus SSM) was prepared by respectively brush-coating polyethyleneimine/aminated carbon nanotubes (PEI/CNTs-NH₂) coating and polyacrylic acid (PAA) coating on its two sides. Two demulsification mechanisms, i.e., electrostatic attraction-repulsion and electrostatic repulsion-attraction based on the synergism of two oppositely charged sides were proposed. Combined with the superwettability and optimized pore size, the Janus SSM can successfully be used to demulsify, coalesce and separate emulsions. In detail, the Janus SSM exhibited separation efficiencies of up to 99.29%, 97.12% for SDS- and DTAC-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions respectively under the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism, and up to 97.10%, 98.57% under the electrostatic repulsion-attraction mechanism. The results indicated that the electrostatic attraction-repulsion mechanism proposed in this study is conductive to achieving higher efficiency in emulsion separation. Furthermore, excellent durability extend the operation life of Janus SSM. This Janus SSM, which combines opposite charges on its two sides, may advance the development of charged materials for emulsion separation.

Nano-fluoro dispersion functionalized superhydrophobic degummed & waste silk fabric for sustained recovery of petroleum oils & organic solvents from wastewater

Superwettable and chemically stable waste silk fabric and degummed silk were used in this study for treatment of oily wastewater and oil/solvent recovery. Silk functionalized with a nano-fluoro dispersion showed a superhydrophobic and oleophilic nature. The functionalized silk demonstrated superoleophilicity towards petroleum oils and organic solvents, and exhibited filtration efficiencies of more than 95%, and up to 70% till 25 re-usable cycles. Furthermore, the functionalized silk materials demonstrated high permeation flux of 584 L.m^-2.h^-1 (for Diesel) for continuous oil-water separation operation. The pH based study in highly acidic and alkaline mediums (pH from 1 to 13) showed excellent stability of nano-fluoro coated silk. Thermogravimetric analysis showed thermal stability up to 250 °C, and 400 °C, for functionalized waste silk, and degummed silk, respectively. FE-SEM analysis revealed randomly oriented spindle shaped nano particles anchored on the silk surface exhibiting hierarchical patterns, as required for the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter state. The rate absorption study showed close curve fitting for pseudo second order kinetics (R² = 0.999), which indicated physical absorption process. BET analysis confirmed the porous nature, while the elemental XPS and EDX analysis confirmed strong bonding and uniform coating of fluoro nanoparticles on silk surface. The results demonstrated that nano-fluoro dispersion functionalized silk can be successfully employed for effective oil/solvent-water filtration, oil/solvent-spill cleanups, and treatment of oily wastewater for protection of water resources.

Biomass-derived oriented neurovascular network-like superhydrophobic aerogel as robust and recyclable oil droplets captor for versatile oil/water separation

Using tubular kapok fibers (KF) and sodium alginate (SA) as the natural building block, we put forward a novel oriented neurovascular network-like superhydrophobic aerogel with robust dry and wet compression resilience by directional freeze-drying and chemical vapor deposition. In the block, SA forms aligned channel structures providing space for rapid oil transmission, while KF serves as vascular-like capillaries acting as instant "tentacle" to capture the tiny oil droplets in water, facilitating fascinating oil capture efficiency for versatile oil/water separation, The aerogel after dry and wet compression (under a strain of 60%) can recover 96.0% and 97.3% its original, respectively, facilitating stable oil recovery (81.1-89.8%) by squeezing, high separation efficiency (99.04-99.64%) and permeation flux separating oil contaminants from water. A pump-supported experiment shows the aerogel efficiently collecting oil contaminants from the water's surface and bottom by 11503-25611 L·m^-2·h^-1. Particularly, the aerogel as robust oil droplets captor facilely achieves isolation of 99.39-99.68% emulsified oils from oil/water emulsions by novel oil trapping mechanism which simply involves exerting kinetic energy on emulsified oils through repeated oscillation, potentially indicating a simple and efficient alternative to membrane-based oily wastewater remediation via filtration.

Rice straw enhancing catalysis of Pseudomonas fluorescens lipase for synthesis of citronellyl acetate

Citronellyl acetate as an important flavor, can be effectively synthesized by lipase catalysis in nonaqueous system. But lipases usually behave low catalytic activity due to aggregation and denaturation of them in organic phase. To enhance the nonaqueous catalysis, based on the mechanism of lipases activated at water/oil (organic phase) interface, the inexpensive race straw was processed into powder and filaments on which Pseudomonas fluorescens lipase was immobilized by physical adsorption, used for synthesis of citronellyl acetate via transesterification of citronellol and vinyl acetate. Results showed that the desired loading was 10 mg lipase immobilized on 30 mg rice straw filaments or 25 mg rice straw powder. When the two immobilized lipases were employed in the reaction system consisted of 1-mL citronellol and 2-mL vinyl acetate at 37 ℃ and 160 rpm, the conversions all reached 99.8% after 12 h. Under the reaction condition, the conversion catalyzed by 10 mg native lipase was 85.1%. Undergoing six times of 8-h reuses in the organic system, the filament and power immobilized lipases had weak activity attenuation rates 0.36 and 0.32% h^-1, lower than 1.52% h^-1 of native lipase. Even at the room temperature and the static state without shaking and stirring, the rice straw filaments immobilized lipase could brought conversion 62.9% after 10 h but the native lipase only gave 37.0%. Obviously, the rice straw, especially its filaments, is an inexpensive and available natural material to prepare immobilized lipase with desired catalysis in organic phase, meant significant potential in flavor industry.
