A critical review of persulfate-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes for the degradation of emerging contaminants: From mechanisms and electrode materials to applications

The persulfate-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (PS-EAOPs) exhibit distinctive advantages in the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) and have garnered significant attention among researchers, leading to a consistent surge in related research publications over the past decade. Regrettably, there is still a lack of a critical review gaining deep into understanding of ECs degradation by PS-EAOPs. To address the knowledge gaps, in this review, the mechanism of electro-activated PS at the interface of the electrodes (anode, cathode and particle electrodes) is elaborated. The correlation between these electrode materials and the activation mechanism of PS is systematically discussed. The strategies for improving the performance of electrode material that determining the efficiency of PS-EAOPs are also summarized. Then, the applications of PS-EAOPs for the degradation of ECs are described. Finally, the challenges and outlook of PS-EAOPs are discussed. In summary, this review offers valuable guidance for the degradation of ECs by PS-EAOPs.

Activation of peracetic acid by electrodes using biogenic electrons: A novel energy- and catalyst-free process to eliminate pharmaceuticals

Peracetic acid (PAA) has received increasing attention as an alternative oxidant for wastewater treatment. However, existing processes for PAA activation to generate reactive species typically require external energy input (e.g., electrically and UV-mediated activation) or catalysts (e.g., Co2+), inevitably increasing treatment costs or introducing potential new contaminants that necessitate additional removal. In this work, we developed a catalyst-free, self-sustaining bioelectrochemical approach within a two-chamber bioelectrochemical system (BES), where a cathode electrode in-situ activates PAA using renewable biogenic electrons generated by anodic exoelectrogens (e.g., Geobacter) degrading biodegradable organic matter (e.g., acetic acid) in wastewater at the anode. This innovative BES-PAA technique achieved 98 % and 81 % removal of 2 µM sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in two hours at pH 2 (cation exchange membrane) and pH 6 (bipolar membrane) using 100 μM PAA without external voltage. Mechanistic studies, including radical quenching, molecular probe validation, electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, revealed that SMX degradation was driven by reactive species generated via biogenic electron-mediated OO cleavage of PAA, with CH3C(O)OO• contributing 68.1 %, •OH of 18.4 %, and CH3C(O)O• of 9.4 %, where initial formation of •OH and CH3C(O)O• rapidly reacts with PAA to produce CH3C(O)OO•. The presence of common water constituents such as anions (e.g., Cl-, NO3-, and H2PO4-) and humic acid (HA) significantly hinders SMX removal via the BES-PAA technique, whereas CO32- and HCO3- ions have a comparatively minor impact. Additionally, the study investigated the removal of various pharmaceuticals present in secondary treated municipal wastewater, attributing differences in removal efficiency to the selective action of CH3C(O)OO•. This research demonstrates a novel PAA activation method that is ecologically benign, inexpensive, and capable of overcoming catalyst deactivation and secondary pollution issues.

A critical review of approaches to enhance the performance of bio-electro-Fenton and photo-bio-electro-Fenton systems

The development of sustainable advanced energy conversion technologies and efficient pollutant treatment processes is a viable solution to the two global crises of the lack of non-renewable energy resources and environmental harm. In recent years, the interaction of biological and chemical oxidation units to utilize biomass has been extensively studied. Among these systems, bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) and photo-bio-electro-Fenton (PBEF) systems have shown prospects for application due to making rational and practical conversion and use of energy. This review compared and analyzed the electron transfer mechanisms in BEF and PBEF systems, and systematically summarized the techniques for enhancing system performance based on the generation, transfer, and utilization of electrons, including increasing the anode electron recovery efficiency, enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species, and optimizing operational modes. This review compared the effects of different methods on the electron flow process and fully evaluated the benefits and drawbacks. This review may provide straightforward suggestions and methods to enhance the performance of BEF and PBEF systems and inspire the reader to explore the generation and utilization of sustainable energy more deeply.

Degradation of tetracycline under a wide pH range in a heterogeneous photo bio-electro-fenton system using FeMn-LDH/g-C3N4 cathode: Performance and mechanism

The widespread use of antibiotics and the inefficiency of traditional degradation treatments pose threats to the environment and human health. Previous studies have reported the potential of bio-electro-Fenton (BEF) processes for antibiotic removal. However, some drawbacks, such as a strict pH range of 2-3 and iron sludge generation, limit their large-scale application. Thus, to overcome the narrow pH range of traditional BEF processes, a photo-BEF (PBEF) system was established using a novel FeMn-layered double hydroxide (LDH)/graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) (FM/CN) composite cathode. The performance of the PBEF system was investigated by degrading tetracycline (TC) under low-power LED lamp irradiation. The results indicated that the pH range of the PBEF system could be expanded to 3-11 using an FM/CN cathode, which exhibited a TC removal efficiency of 63.0%-75.9%. The highest TC removal efficiency was achieved at pH 7. The efficient mineralization of TC by the PBEF system can be high, up to 67.6%. In addition, the TC removal mechanism was discussed in terms of reactive oxygen species, TC degradation intermediate analyses, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Strong oxidative hydroxyl radicals (·OH) were the dominant reactive oxidizing species in the PBEF system, followed by ·O2- and h+. Three pathways of TC degradation were proposed based on the analysis of intermediates, and the reactive sites attacked by electrophilic reagents were explored using DFT modeling. In addition, the overall toxicity of TC degradation intermediates effectively decreased in the PBEF system. This work offers deep insights into the TC removal mechanisms and performance of the PBEF system over a wide pH range of 3-11.

Sludge dewaterability improvement with microbial fuel cell powered electro-Fenton system (MFCⓅEFs): Performance and mechanisms

Throughout the entire process of sludge treatment and disposal, it is crucial to explore stable and efficient techniques to improve sludge dewaterability, which can facilitate subsequent resource utilization and space and cost savings. Traditional Fenton oxidation has been widely researched to enhance the performance of sludge dewaterability, which was limited by the additional energy input and the instabilities of Fe2+ and H2O2. To reduce the consumption of energy and chemicals and further break the rate-limiting step of the iron cycle, a novel and feasible method that constructed microbial fuel cell powered electro-Fenton systems (MFCⓅEFs) with ferrite and biochar electrode (MgFe2O4@BC/CF) was successfully demonstrated. The MFCⓅEFs with MgFe2O4@BC/CF electrode achieved specific resistance filtration and sludge cake water content of 2.52 × 1012 m/kg and 66.54 %. Cellular structure and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were disrupted, releasing partially bound water and destroying hydrophilic structures to facilitate sludge flocs aggregation, which was attributed to the oxidation of hydroxyl radicals. The consistent electron supply supplied by MFCⓅEFs and catalytically active sites on the surface of the multifunctional functional group electrode was responsible for producing more hydroxyl radicals and possessing a better oxidizing ability. The study provided an innovative process for sludge dewaterability improvement with high efficiency and low energy consumption, which presented new insights into the green treatment of sludge.

Ecotoxicity characterization assisted performance assessment of electro-bioremediation reactors for nitrate and arsenite elimination

The performance of combined reduction of nitrate (NO3 - ) to dinitrogen gas (N2 ) and oxidation of arsenite (As[III]) to arsenate (As[V]) by a bioelectrochemical system was assessed, supported by ecotoxicity characterization. For the comprehensive toxicity characterization of the untreated model groundwater and the treated reactor effluents, a problem-specific ecotoxicity test battery was established. The performance of the applied technology in terms of toxicity and target pollutant elimination was compared and analyzed. The highest toxicity attenuation was achieved under continuous flow mode with hydraulic retention time (HRT) = 7.5 h, with 95%, nitrate removal rate and complete oxidation of arsenite to arsenate. Daphnia magna proved to be the most sensitive test organism. The results of the D. magna lethality test supported the choice of the ideal operational conditions based on chemical data analysis. The outcomes of the study demonstrated that the applied technology was able to improve the groundwater quality in terms of both chemical and ecotoxicological characteristics. The importance of ecotoxicity evaluation was also highlighted, given that significant target contaminant elimination did not necessarily lower the environmental impact of the initial, untreated medium, in addition, anomalies might occur during the technology operational process which in some instances, could result in elevated toxicity levels.

An anode and cathode cooperative oxidation system constructed with Ee-GF as anode and CuFe2O4/Cu2O/Cu@EGF as cathode for the efficient removal of sulfamethoxazole

This study aimed to further improve the degradation efficiency of pollutants by electrochemical oxidation system and reduce the consumption of electric energy. A simple method of electrochemical exfoliation was used to modify graphite felt (GF) to prepare an anode material (Ee-GF) with high degradation performance. An anode and cathode cooperative oxidation system was constructed with Ee-GF as the anode and CuFe₂O₄/Cu₂O/Cu@EGF as the cathode to efficiently degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Complete degradation of SMX was achieved within 30 min. Compared with anodic oxidation system alone, the degradation time of SMX was reduced by half and the energy consumption was reduced by 66.8 %. The system displayed excellent performance for the degradation of different concentrations (10-50 mg L^-1) of SMX, different pollutants, and under different water quality conditions. In addition, the system still maintained 91.7 % removal rate of SMX after ten consecutive runs. At least 12 degradation products and seven possible degradation routes of SMX were generated in the degradation process by the combined system. The eco-toxicity of degradation products of SMX was reduced after the proposed treatment. This study provided a theoretical basis for the safe, efficient, and low energy consumption removal of antibiotic wastewater.

Integration of microbial electrochemical systems and photocatalysis for sustainable treatment of organic recalcitrant wastewaters: Main mechanisms, recent advances, and present prospects

In recent years, microbial electrochemical systems (MESs) have demonstrated to be an environmentally friendly technology for wastewater treatment and simultaneous production of value-added products or energy. However, practical applications of MESs for the treatment of recalcitrant wastewater are limited by their low power output and slow rates of pollutant biodegradation. As a novel technology, hybrid MESs integrating biodegradation and photocatalysis have shown great potential to accelerate the degradation of bio-recalcitrant pollutants and increase the system output. In this review, we summarize recent advances of photo-assisted MESs for enhanced removal of recalcitrant pollutants, and present further discussion about the synergistic effect of biodegradation and photocatalysis. In addition, we analyse in detail different set-up configurations, discuss mechanisms of photo-enhanced extracellular electron transfer, and briefly present ongoing research cases. Finally, we highlight the current limitations and corresponding research gaps, and propose insights for future research.

Polishing micropollutants in municipal wastewater, using biogenic manganese oxides in a moving bed biofilm reactor (BioMn-MBBR)

Conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) cannot remove organic micropollutants efficiently, and thus various polishing processes are increasingly being studied. One such potential process is utilising biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx). The present study operated two moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) with synthetic sewage as feed, one reactor feed was spiked with Mn(II) which allowed the continuous formation of BioMnOx by Mn-oxidising bacteria in the suspended biofilms (i.e. BioMn-MBBR). Spiking experiments with 14 micropollutants were conducted to investigate if BioMnOx combined with MBBR could be utilised to polish micropollutants in wastewater treatment. Results show enhanced removal by BioMn-MBBR over control MBBR (without BioMnOx) for specific micropollutants, such as diclofenac (36% vs. 5%) and sulfamethoxazole (80% vs. 24%). However, diclofenac removal was significantly inhibited when municipal wastewater was fed, and a further batch experiment demonstrates the reduced removal of diclofenac could be due to (unusual) higher pH in municipal wastewater compared to synthetic sewage. A shift in bacterial community was also observe in BioMn-MBBR over long-term operation. Overall, BioMn-MBBR in this study shows great potential for practical application in removing a larger range of micropollutants, which could be applied as an efficient polishing step for typical municipal wastewater.

A review on the landfill leachate treatment technologies and application prospects of three-dimensional electrode technology

With the expansion of urbanisation, the total amount of solid waste produced by urban residents has been increasing, and the problem of municipal solid waste disposal has also been aggravated. Landfill leachate treatment technologies could be divided into three categories: biological, physical and advanced oxidation treatment technology. Among them, advanced oxidation treatment technology has a good effect on the treatment of landfill leachate with little secondary pollution and has excellent application potential. Three-dimensional (3D) electrode technology, as a new type of advanced oxidation technology, could remove refractory pollutants in water and has attracted considerable attention. This article aims to (1) compare existing landfill leachate treatment technologies, (2) summarise 3D electrode technology application scenarios, (3) discuss the advantages of 3D electrode technology in landfill leachate treatment and (4) look ahead the future directions of 3D electrode technology in landfill leachate treatment. We hope that this article will be helpful to researchers who are interested in the field of landfill leachate treatment.
