Migration and transformation of chromium in unsaturated soil during groundwater table fluctuations induced by rainfall

Groundwater Cr(VI) contamination and remediation: A review from 1999 to 2022

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination of groundwater has traditionally been an environmental issue of great concern due to its bioaccumulative and highly toxic nature. This paper presents a review and bibliometric analysis of the literature on the interest area "Cr(VI) in groundwater" published in the Web of Science Core Collection from 1999 to 2022. First, information on 203 actual Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater sites around the world was summarized, and the basic characteristics of the sources and concentrations of contamination were derived. 68.95% of the sites were due to human causes and 56.43% of these sites had Cr(VI) concentrations in the range of 0-10 mg/L. At groundwater sites with high Cr(VI) contamination due to natural causes, 75.00% of the sites had Cr(VI) concentrations less than 0.2 mg/L. A total of 936 papers on "Cr(VI) in groundwater" were retrieved for bibliometric analysis: interest in research on Cr(VI) in groundwater has grown rapidly in recent years; 59.4% of the papers were published in the field of environmental sciences. A systematic review of the progress of studies on the Cr(VI) removal/remediation based on reduction, adsorption and biological processes is presented. Out of 666 papers on Cr(VI) removal/remediation, 512, 274, and 75 papers dealt with the topics of reduction, adsorption, and bioremediation, respectively. In addition, several studies have demonstrated the potential applicability of natural attenuation in the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. This paper will help researchers to understand and investigate methodological strategies to remove Cr(VI) from groundwater in a more targeted and effective manner.

Effects of nZVI on the migration and availability of Cr(VI) in soils under simulated acid rain leaching conditions

Hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), is a ubiquitous toxic metal that can be reduced to Cr(III) by nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI). Finding out effects of continuous rainfall leaching on the Cr(VI) release and availability remains a problem, needing to be addressed. Whether the Cr(VI) reduction by nZVI and continuous rainfall leaching lead to localized heterogeneity in soil is unclear. Therefore, two in situ high-resolution (HR) techniques of the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) and planar optode were combined with ex situ sampling experiments here. Results demonstrate that nZVI decreased Cr(VI) leaching by 5.60-8.50 % compared to control soils. DGT-measured concentrations of Cr(VI), CDGT-Cr(VI), ranged from 7.31 to 19.4 μg L-1 in the control soils, increasing with depth while CDGT-Cr(VI) in nZVI-treated soils (2.41-6.18 μg L-1) decreased or remained stable with depth. However, simulated acid-rain leaching increases CDGT-Cr(VI) by 1.61-fold in nZVI-treated soils, negatively affecting the remediation. DGT measurements in bulk soils using disc devices are better at capturing the change of Cr(VI) availability at different conditions, whereas 2D-HR DGT mappings did not characterize significant mobilization of Cr(VI) at the micro-scale. These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring Cr(VI) release and availability in remediated soil under acid-rain leaching conditions for effective environment management.

A Critical Review of Groundwater Table Fluctuation: Formation, Effects on Multifields, and Contaminant Behaviors in a Soil and Aquifer System

The groundwater table fluctuation (GTF) zone is an important medium for the hydrologic cycle between unsaturated soil and saturated aquifers, which accelerates the migration, transformation, and redistribution of contaminants and further poses a potential environmental risk to humans. In this review, we clarify the key processes in the generation of the GTF zone and examine its links with the variation of the hydrodynamic and hydrochemistry field, colloid mobilization, and contaminant migration and transformation. Driven by groundwater recharge and discharge, GTF regulates water flow and the movement of the capillary fringe, which further control the advection and dispersion of contaminants in soil and groundwater. In addition, the formation and variation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) waterfall are impacted by GTF. The changing ROS components partially determine the characteristic transformation of solutes and the dynamic redistribution of the microbial population. GTF facilitates the migration and transformation of contaminants (such as nitrogen, heavy metals, non-aqueous phase liquids, and volatile organic compounds) through colloid mobilization, the co-migration effect, and variation of the hydrodynamic and hydrochemistry fields. In conclusion, this review illustrates the limitations of the current literature on GTF, and the significance of GTF zones in the underground environment is underscored by expounding on the future directions and prospects.

Numerical modeling investigations of colloid facilitated chromium migration considering variable-density flow during the coastal groundwater table fluctuation

Fluctuation of the groundwater table in the coastal zone influences the migration of colloids in vadose zone, which can further carry contaminants to transport. To capture the variable-density water flow and the migration processes, this study developed a colloid-facilitated migration model by adjusting the adsorption coefficient and considering the relationship between colloid and salinity based on the experimental observations. This model was further applied to explore the effects of freshwater and seawater fluctuations on the migration and transformation of colloids and Cr in coastal vadose zones. The greater the hydraulic conductivity of the saturated aquifer was, the more Cr were discharged into the ocean by submarine groundwater discharge. Furthermore, the increase in the freshwater fluctuation amplitude expanded the pollution ranges of colloidal Cr and dissolved Cr. The rise of the seawater fluctuation amplitude had a more obvious reduction effect on the total solid retained Cr in the contaminant source, compared with that of the freshwater fluctuation. As the seawater fluctuation amplitude increased from 0.1 m to 0.8 m, the ratio of total solid retained Cr reduction in the contaminant source to the initial value increased from 1.8 % to 7.8 %. The results obtained from this study deepens our understanding of how colloids and contaminants migrate across a coastal area from vadose zone induced by the groundwater table fluctuation.

Fate and transport of chromium in industrial sites: Dynamic simulation on soil profile

Direct discharge of chromium-containing waste water and improper disposal of waste residues in industrial sites may lead to the vertical migration of metals into aquifers, posing serious threat to soil-groundwater system. The heterogeneity in soil profile further aggravates the complexity and unpredictability of this transport process. However, topsoil was the main focus of most studies. Herein, the vertical transport and transformation of Cr in soils at different depths in three industrial sites (i.e., Shijiazhuang, Zhuzhou, and Guangzhou) were investigated to delineate Cr transport and retention characteristics under complex conditions. Regional and vertical differences in soil properties led to the specificity in Cr migration behaviors among these three sites. Correlation analysis showed that soil pH (r = -0.909, p < 0.05) and Fe content (r = 0.949, p < 0.01) were the major controlling factors of Cr(VI) migration and transformation in aquifers. Furthermore, the soil of Zhuzhou site showed the maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (0.225 mol/kg), and the strongest reduction ability of Cr(VI) was observed in the Guangzhou soil. Results of model-based long-term forecast indicated that the Cr(III) concentration in the liquid phase of Guangzhou subsoil could reach 0.08 mol/m³ within 20 years. Heavier rainfall condition exacerbated the contamination due to an increased pollutant flux and enhanced convection. Specially, Cr was fixed in the topsoil of Zhuzhou site with the formation of PbCrO₄ and presented least vertical migration risk. The conclusions above can provide scientific theoretical guidance for heavy metal pollution prevention and control in industrial contaminated regions.

Health Risk Assessment during In Situ Remediation of Cr(VI)-Contaminated Groundwater by Permeable Reactive Barriers: A Field-Scale Study

The presence of residual Cr(VI) in soils causes groundwater contamination in aquifers, affecting the health of exposed populations. Initially, permeable reactive barriers(PRB) effectively removed Cr(VI) from groundwater. However, as PRB clogging increased and Cr(VI) was released from upstream soils, the contamination plume continued to spread downstream. By 2020, the level of contamination in the downstream was nearly identical to that in the upstream. The study results show that during normal operation, the PRB can successfully remove Cr(VI) from contaminated groundwater and reduce the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to humans from the downstream side of groundwater. However, the remediated groundwater still poses an unacceptable risk to human health. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the concentration of the pollutant was the most sensitive parameter and interacted significantly with other factors. Ultimately, it was determined that the residual Cr(VI) in the soil of the study region continues to contaminate the groundwater and constitutes a serious health danger to residents in the vicinity. As remediated groundwater still poses a severe threat to human health, PRB may not be as effective as people believe.

Cr Migration Potential and Species Properties in the Soil Profile from a Chromate Production Site in the Groundwater Depression Cone Area

The relationship between the migration process and speciation distribution of Cr is important for the risk assessment in the underground environment. In this work, soil columns were collected from the chromate production site, with a 40-year operation, in the groundwater depression cone area of North China plain. The relationship between chromium pollution features and the geochemical properties of soil was established, and the migration risk of Cr(VI) was assessed based on the Nemerow composite index and Hydrus-1D model. The maximum total Cr concentration in the chromium slag dumping site reached 907 mg/kg, and that in the chromate production workshop was more than 200 mg/kg across the depth. The migration of Cr might be accelerated in the soil with abundant Mn (236-1461 mg/kg) but scarce organic matters (< 0.45%). The Hydrus simulation indicated that Cr(VI) would reach a cumulative flux of 300-729 mg/cm² after 50 years.

Colloid formation and facilitated chromium transport in the coastal area soil induced by freshwater and seawater alternating fluctuations

Seawater seasonal fluctuation results in its close interaction with freshwater in the coastal area, which may affect behavior of contaminants there. This study was conducted to explore the transport and transformation of soil colloid and associated Cr during freshwater and seawater alternating fluctuations by laboratory experiment and numerical simulation. Such a fluctuation brought downward migration of Cr from upper contaminated soil and induced reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III). An obvious increase of retained Cr(III) was observed at the lower layers of soil due to the reducing environment. More importantly, the colloids with average sizes between 800-1500 nm was formed during the fluctuation and mainly composed of microcline and Fe/Mn oxides minerals, which determined the Cr transport. Compared with the previous freshwater fluctuation, seawater fluctuations generated more and larger-sized colloids due to its high ionic strength. These colloids carried over 94% Cr in the effluent and Cr(III) accounted for over 95% of total Cr. A colloid-facilitated Cr transport modeling showed that the soil retained Cr decreased by about 14% after eight rounds of fluctuation on an actual soil-contaminated site scale. Our study provides insight for the understanding of geochemical process of Cr in the coastal area under freshwater and seawater fluctuation conditions.
