A fixed-film bioscrubber of Microbacterium esteraromaticum SBS1-7 for toluene/styrene biodegradation

Performances of a novel BAF with ferromanganese oxide modified biochar (FMBC) as the carriers for treating antibiotics, nitrogen and phosphorus in aquaculture wastewater

In this paper, a biological aerated filter (BAF) based on ferromanganese oxide-biochar (FMBC) was constructed to investigated the removal performance and mechanism for conventional pollutants and four kinds of antibiotic, in contrast of conventional zeolite loaded BAF (BAF-A) and bamboo biochar filled BAF (BAF-B). Results showed that the average removal efficiency of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and antibiotics in a FMBC-BAF (named by BAF-C) were 52.97 ± 2.27%, 51.58 ± 1.92% and 70.36 ± 1.00% ~ 81.65 ± 0.99% respectively in running period (39-100 d), which were significantly higher than those of BAF-A and BAF-B. In the BAF-C, the expression of denitrification enzyme activities and the secretion of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) especially polyprotein (PN) were effectively stimulated, as well as accelerated electron transfer activity (ETSA) and lower electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were acquired. After 100 days of operation, the abundance of nitrogen, phosphorus and antibiotic removal functional bacteria like Sphingorhabdus (4.52%), Bradyrhizobium (1.98%), Hyphomicrobium (2.49%), Ferruginibacter (7.80%), unclassified_f_Blastoca tellaceae (1.84%), norank_f_JG30-KF-CM45 (6.82%), norank_f_norank_o_SBR1031 (2.43%), Nitrospira (2.58%) norank_f_Caldilineaceae (1.53%) and Micropruina (1.11%) were enriched. Mechanism hypothesis of enhanced performances of nutrients and antibiotics removal pointed that: The phosphorus was removed by adsorption and precipitation, antibiotics removal was mainly achieved through the combined action of adsorption and biodegradation, while nitrogen removal was realized by biologic nitrification and denitrification in a FMBC-BAF for aquaculture wastewater treatment.

The effectivity and applicability of a novel sugar-based anionic and nonionic Gemini surfactant synthetized for the perchloroethylene-contaminated groundwater remediation

Surfactant-enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR) has effectively removed dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) from the contaminated aquifers. However, restricted by structural defects, typical monomeric surfactants undergo precipitation, high adsorption loss, and poor solubilization in aquifers, resulting in low remediation efficiency. In this study, a novel sugar-based anionic and non-ionic Gemini surfactant (SANG) was designed and synthesized for SEAR. Glucose was introduced into SANG as a non-ionic group to overcome the interference of low temperature and ions in groundwater. Sodium sulfonate was introduced as an anionic group to overcome aquifer adsorption loss. Two long-straight carbon chains were introduced as hydrophobic groups to provide high surface activity and solubilizing capacity. Even with low temperature or high salt content, its solution did not precipitate in aquifer conditions. The adsorption loss was as low as 0.54 and 0.90 mg/g in medium and fine sand, respectively. Compared with typical surfactants used for SEAR, SANG had the highest solubilization and desorption abilities for perchloroethylene (PCE) without emulsification, a crucial negative that Tween80 and other non-ionic surfactants exhibit. After flushing the contaminated aquifer using SANG, > 99 % of PCE was removed. Thus, with low potential environmental risk, SANG is effectively applicable in subsurface remediation, making it a better surfactant choice for SEAR.

Simultaneous immobilization enhances synergistic interactions and crude oil removal of bacterial consortium

Oil spillage has serious adverse effects on marine environments. The degradation of crude oil by microorganisms may be an effective and sustainable approach. In this study, the removal of crude oil from seawater by immobilized bacterial consortium was performed and the enhancement of crude oil degradation efficiency by varying immobilization methods and inoculum volume ratio was examined. The nonpathogenic and heavy metal-tolerant bacterial consortium of Sphingobium naphthae MO2-4 and Priestia aryabhattai TL01-2 was immobilized by biofilm formation on aquaporousgels. The simultaneous immobilization of strains MO2-4 and TL01-2 showed better crude oil removal efficiency than independent immobilization, which indicated positive interactions among consortium members in the mixed-culture immobilized systems. Moreover, the immobilized consortium at a 2:1 (MO2-4:TL01-2) inoculum volume ratio showed the best crude oil removal capacity. The immobilized consortium removed 77% of 2000 mg L-1 crude oil in seawater over 7 days. The immobilized consortium maintained crude oil removal efficacy in semicontinuous experiments. In addition, the immobilized consortium was used to remediate seawater contaminated with 1000 mg L-1 crude oil in a 20 L wave tank. After 28 days, the crude oil degradation efficiency of immobilized consortium was approximately 70%, and crude oil degradation through natural attenuation was not observed. Moreover, the genomic features of strains MO2-4 and TL01-2 are reported. Genomic analyses of both strains confirmed the presence of many genes involved in hydrocarbon degradation, heavy metal resistance, biosurfactant synthesis, and biofilm formation, supporting the biodegradation results and characterizing strain properties. The results of this work introduce the potential benefit of simultaneous immobilization of bacterial consortia to improve efficiency of crude oil biodegradation and has motivated further investigations into large-scale remediation of crude oil-contaminated seawater.

Characterization and removal mechanism of a novel enrofloxacin-degrading microorganism, Microbacterium proteolyticum GJEE142 capable of simultaneous removal of enrofloxacin, nitrogen and phosphorus

In the study, a novel ENR-degrading microorganism, Microbacterium proteolyticum GJEE142 was isolated from aquaculture wastewater for the first time. The ENR removal of strain GJEE142 was reliant upon the provision of limited additional carbon source, and was adaptative to low temperature (13 ℃) and high salinity (50‰). The ENR removal process, to which intracellular enzymes made more contributions, was implemented in three proposed pathways. During the removal process, oxidative stress response of strain GJEE142 was activated and the bacterial toxicity of ENR was decreased. Strain GJEE142 could also achieve the synchronous removal of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate and phosphorus with the nitrogen removal pathways of nitrate → nitrite → ammonium → glutamine → glutamate → glutamate metabolism and nitrate → nitrite → gaseous nitrogen. The phosphorus removal was implemented under complete aerobic conditions with the assistance of polyphosphate kinase and exopolyphosphatase. Genomic analysis provided corresponding genetic insights for deciphering removal mechanisms of ENR, nitrogen and phosphorus. ENR, nitrogen and phosphorus in both actual aquaculture wastewater and domestic wastewater could be desirably removed. Desirable adaptation, excellent performance and wide distribution will make strain GJEE142 the hopeful strain in wastewater treatment.

Effects of Water Content and Irrigation of Packing Materials on the Performance of Biofilters and Biotrickling Filters: A Review

Biofilters (BFs) and biotrickling filters (BTFs) are two types of bioreactors used for treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Both BFs and BTFs use packing materials in which various microorganisms are immobilised. The water phase in BFs is stationary and used to maintain the humidity of packing materials, while BTFs have a mobile liquid phase. Optimisation of irrigation of packing materials is crucial for effective performance of BFs and BTFs. A literature review is presented on the influence of water content of packing materials on the biofiltration efficiency of various pollutants. Different configurations of BFs and BTFs and their influence on moisture distribution in packing materials were discussed. The review also presents various packing materials and their irrigation control strategies applied in recent biofiltration studies. The sources of this review included recent research articles from scientific journals and several review articles discussing BFs and BTFs.

Construction and Characterization of an Intergeneric Fusant That Degrades the Fungicides Chlorothalonil and Carbendazim

Bordetella sp. CTN-16 (GenBank FJ598326) can degrade chlorothalonil (CTN) but not carbendazim (MBC), and Microbacterium sp. MBC-3 (GenBank OK667229) can degrade MBC but not CTN. A functional strain BD2 was obtained by protoplast fusion of CTN-16 and MBC-3 to generate a fusant with improved degradation efficiency of CTN and MBC. Fusant-BD2 with eighth transfer on a medium containing CTN and two antibiotics was obtained. To identify and confirm the genetic relationship between parental strains and fusion strain BD2, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences analysis were carried out. SEM analysis illustrated BD2 and its parents had some slight differences in the cell morphology. Fusant-BD2 not only possessed the same bands as parental strains but also had its specific bands analyzed through RAPD. The genetic similarity indices for BD2 and its parental strains CTN-16 and MBC-3 are 0.571 and 0.428, respectively. The degradation rates of CTN and MBC were 79.8% and 65.2% in the inorganic salt solution containing 50 mg·L−1 CTN and 50 mg·L−1 MBC, respectively, and the degradation efficiencies were better than the parental strains CTN-16 and MBC-3. This study provides a prospect for the application of fusion strain BD2 in bioremediation of CTN and MBC contaminated sites.

A review on biofiltration techniques: Recent advancements in the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the treatment of polluted water

Good quality of water determines the healthy life of living beings on this earth. The cleanliness of water was interrupted by the pollutants emerging out of several human activities. Industrialization, urbanization, heavy population, and improper disposal of wastes are found to be the major reasons for the contamination of water. Globally, the inclusion of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and heavy metals released by manufacturing industries, pharmaceuticals, and petrochemical processes have created environmental issues. The toxic nature of these pollutants has led researchers, scientists, and industries to exhibit concern towards the complete eradication of them. In this scenario, the development of wastewater treatment methodologies at low cost and in an eco-friendly way had gained importance at the international level. Recently, bio-based technologies were considered for environmental remedies. Biofiltration based works have shown a significant result for the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the treatment of wastewater. This was done with several biological sources such as bacteria, fungi, algae, plants, yeasts, etc. The biofiltration technique is cost-effective, simple, biocompatible, sustainable, and eco-friendly compared to conventional techniques. This review article provides deep insight into biofiltration technologies engaged in the removal of volatile organic compounds and heavy metals in the wastewater treatment process.
