Examination of multiple sources of selenium release from coal wastes and strategies for remediation

Arsenic removal from coal by ferric chloride enhanced leaching under ultraviolet irradiation during flue gas desulphurization with coal slurry

During coal combustion, the harmful element arsenic can be released into environment and cause potential significant harm to human beings. Therefore, it is very important to study the removal of arsenic from coal before combustion. In this work, simulated SO2-containing flue gas was used to leach arsenic from coal in a 1 L UV photoreactor. The effects of FeCl3, ultraviolet (UV), pH and the Cl-/Fe3+ molar ratio on arsenic leaching and SO2 removal were experimentally investigated and the enhancing mechanism was analysed. Experimental results demonstrated that FeCl3 and UV could efficiently increase iron and arsenic leaching percentages and SO2 removal efficiency. UV irradiation could induce the oxidation of most trivalent arsenic. The arsenic leaching percentage was significantly larger than that of iron. Low pH was favourable for iron and arsenic leaching. The optimal Cl-/Fe3+ molar ratio was determined to be 3:1. The introduced ferric chloride could not only increase the concentrations of free radicals and ferric iron oxidants, the chloride ion might also impede the formation of passive coatings, thus increasing the arsenic leaching percentage, intensifying the oxidation of trivalent arsenic and enhancing the removal of SO2.

Use of Microbial Consortia in Bioremediation of Metalloid Polluted Environments

Metalloids are released into the environment due to the erosion of the rocks or anthropogenic activities, causing problems for human health in different world regions. Meanwhile, microorganisms with different mechanisms to tolerate and detoxify metalloid contaminants have an essential role in reducing risks. In this review, we first define metalloids and bioremediation methods and examine the ecology and biodiversity of microorganisms in areas contaminated with these metalloids. Then we studied the genes and proteins involved in the tolerance, transport, uptake, and reduction of these metalloids. Most of these studies focused on a single metalloid and co-contamination of multiple pollutants were poorly discussed in the literature. Furthermore, microbial communication within consortia was rarely explored. Finally, we summarized the microbial relationships between microorganisms in consortia and biofilms to remove one or more contaminants. Therefore, this review article contains valuable information about microbial consortia and their mechanisms in the bioremediation of metalloids.

Allotropy of selenium nanoparticles: Colourful transition, synthesis, and biotechnological applications

Elemental selenium (Se⁰ ) nanomaterials undergo allotropic transition from thermodynamically-unstable to more stable phases. This process is significantly different when Se⁰ nanoparticles (NPs) are produced via physico-chemical and biological pathways. While the allotropic transition of physico-chemically synthesized Se⁰ is fast (minutes to hours), the biogenic Se⁰ takes months to complete. The biopolymer layer covering biogenic Se⁰ NPs might be the main factor controlling this retardation, but this still remains an open question. Phylogenetically-diverse bacteria reduce selenium oxyanions to red amorphous Se⁰ allotrope, which has low market value. Then, red Se⁰ undergoes allotropic transition to trigonal (metallic grey) allotrope, the end product having important industrial applications (e.g. semiconductors, alloys). Is it not yet clear whether biogenic Se⁰ presents any biological function, or it is mainly a detoxification and respiratory by-product. The better understanding of this transition would benefit the recovery of Se⁰ NPs from secondary resources and its targeted utilization with respect to each allotropic stage. This review article presents and critically discusses the main physico-chemical methods and biosynthetic pathways of Se⁰ (bio)mineralization. In addition, the article proposes a conceptual model for the resource recovery potential of trigonal selenium nanomaterials in the context of circular economy.

Selected Critical Raw Materials in Waste from Coal Gasification in Poland

In an effort to identify new sources of critical raw materials (CRMs) possibility of recovering selected CRMs from Polish coals, chars, and ashes resulting from the combustion of coals and chars was investigated. The samples were collected from pilot fluidized bed gasification systems. The search for CRMs in coal gasification wastes has not been widely reported before. The study used 2 bituminous coal and 1 lignite sample; the concentration of individual critical raw materials (CRMs) was analyzed using the ICP-MS method. The obtained results were compared with Clarke values in coal ash and in the Earth’s crust, and with the adopted cut-off grade. As shown by the analysis, the highest concentrations of CRMs can be found in fly ash, mainly in samples from the eastern part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. This applies mostly to Be, Cs, or Sb due to the fact that their concentrations were found to be higher than the Clarke value in the Earth’s crust; the mentioned fly ashes could be used as potential sources of critical elements if appropriate recovery technologies are developed. In addition, the tested materials have elevated Se, Pb, Ni concentrations, but their recovery is currently not economically viable. Compared to the currently adopted cut-off grade levels, there are no critical elements in the analyzed coal gasification waste that could be recovered.
