Obtention of biochar-Ca nanoparticles using Citrus tangerina׃ A morphological, surface and study remotion of Aflatoxin AFB1

An Eco-friendly Approach to ZnO NP Synthesis Using Citrus reticulata Blanco Peel/Extract: Characterization and Antibacterial and Photocatalytic Activity

Emission of greenhouse gases and infectious diseases caused by improper agro-waste disposal has gained significant attention in recent years. To overcome these hurdles, agro-waste can be valorized into valuable bioactive compounds that act as reducing or stabilizing agents in the synthesis of nanomaterials. Herein, we report a simple circular approach using Citrus reticulata Blanco (C. reticulata) waste (peel powder/aqueous extract) as green reducing and capping/stabilizing agents and Zn nitrate/acetate precursors to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) with efficient antimicrobial and photocatalytic activities. The obtained NPs crystallized in a hexagonal wurtzite structure and differed clearly in their morphology. UV-vis analysis of the nanoparticles showed a characteristic broad absorption band between 330 and 414 nm belonging to ZnO NPs. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of ZnO NPs exhibited a Zn-O band close to 450 cm-1. The band gap values were in the range of 2.84-3.14 eV depending on the precursor and agent used. The crystallite size obtained from size-strain plots from measured XRD patterns was between 7 and 26 nm, with strain between 16 and 4%. The highly crystalline nature of obtained ZnO NPs was confirmed by clear ring diffraction patterns and d-spacing values of the observed lattice fringes. ZnNPeelMan_400 and ZnNExtrMan showed good stability, as the zeta potential was found to be around -20 mV, and reduced particle aggregation. Photoluminescence analysis revealed different defects belonging to oxygen vacancies (VO+ and VO+2) and zinc interstitial (Zni) sites. The presence of oxygen vacancies on the surface of ZnAcExtrMan_400 and ZnAcPeelMan_400 increased antimicrobial activity, specifically against Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella enteritidis (S. enteritidis). ZnNExtrMan with a minimal inhibitory concentration of 0.156 mg/mL was more effective against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), revealing a high influence of particle size and shape on antimicrobial activity. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of the ZnO NPs was examined by assessing the degradation of acid green dye in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation. ZnAcPeelMan_400 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity (94%) within 90 min after irradiation compared to other obtained ZnO NPs.

Removal of aflatoxin B1 from contaminated milk and water by nitrogen/carbon-enriched cobalt ferrite -chitosan nanosphere: RSM optimization, kinetic, and thermodynamic perspectives

In view of the feed/foods inevitably contaminated by toxic and carcinogenic aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), efficient mesoporous metformin-chitosan/silica‑cobalt ferrite nanospheres (Mt-CS/CFS NSs) was prepared to remove AFB1 from aqueous/non-aqueous media. The morphological, functional, and structural characteristics and adsorption properties of C/N-enriched CS/CFS were investigated systematically. The interactive operating variables (temperature (5.0-35 °C); time (10-100 min); AFB1 dose (50-100 μg/mL); and Mt-CS/CFS dosage (0.5-3.5 mg) were optimized via the Box-Behnken design (BBD), which demonstrated good agreement between the experimental data and proposed model. The adsorption efficiency in artificially contaminated cow's milk as well as aqueous environment reached over 91.0 % in a wide pH range (3.0-9.0), without significant change in the nutritional value of milk. Freundlich isotherm and second-order adsorption kinetics were regarded as the most suitable models to fit the adsorption results, and the adsorption rate is dominated by the intra-particle diffusion and boundary layer diffusion. Thermodynamic analyses proved that the process was spontaneous and exothermic. The adsorption mechanism could be explained as physisorption via hydrogen bonding, n-π interaction, and hydrophobic/hydrophilic interactions. The porous Mt-CS/CFS NS derived from chitosan nanoparticles is therefore outstanding adsorbent, offering great adsorptive performance and recycabilities, which impedes economic losses in the food industry.

Adsorptive removal of aflatoxin B1 from water and edible oil by dopamine-grafted biomass chitosan-iron-cobalt spinel oxide nanocomposite: mechanism, kinetics, equilibrium, thermodynamics, and oil quality

Currently, the use of magnetic physical adsorbents for detoxification is widely applied in the food industry; however, the fabrication of high-efficiency low-cost absorbents without damaging the nutritional quality of food is a major challenge. Herein, a simple, green, efficient, and cost-effective method for the magnetic solid-phase extraction of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) from edible oils and aqueous matrices was developed using a dopamine-loaded biomass chitosan-iron-cobalt spinel oxide nanocomposite (DC/CFOS NC). The characterization, physicochemical processes, mechanism, and reusability of DC/CFOS were systematically evaluated in detail. It was found that the adsorption characteristic of DC/CFOS NC was accurately represented by the pseudo-second-order kinetics (k2 = 0.199 g mg-1 min-1) and Freundlich isotherm models (Kf = 1.139 (mg g-1) (L mg-1), R2 = 0.991)), and its adsorptive process is feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic. Benefiting from its high specific surface area, microporous structure, and polar/non-polar active sites, the as-prepared DC/CFOS exhibited an excellent adsorption performance for AFB1 (50.0 μg mL-1), as measured using the Freundlich isotherm model. The mechanistic studies demonstrated that the synergistic effects of the surface complexation and electrostatic interactions between the functional groups of DC/CFOS NC and AFB1 were the dominant adsorption pathways. Besides, DC/CFOS exhibited negligible impacts on the nutritional quality of the oil after the removal process and storage. Thus, DC/CFOS NC showed sufficient efficacy and safety in the removal of AFB1 from contaminated edible oil.

Endocrine Effect of Some Mycotoxins on Humans: A Clinical Review of the Ways to Mitigate the Action of Mycotoxins

Fungi such as Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp., which are commonly found in the environment, pose a serious global health problem. This study aims to present the results of epidemiological studies, including clinical cases, on the relationship between human exposure to some mycotoxins, especially zearalenone and aflatoxin, and the occurrence of reproductive disorders. In addition, examples of methods to reduce human exposure to mycotoxins are presented. In March 2023, various databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE and Web of Science) were systematically searched using Google Chrome to identify studies evaluating the association between exposure to mycotoxins and the occurrence of complications related to impaired fertility or cancer incidence. The analysed data indicate that exposure to the evaluated mycotoxins is widespread and correlates strongly with precocious puberty, reduced fertility and increased cancer incidence in women and men worldwide. There is evidence to suggest that exposure to the Aspergillus mycotoxin aflatoxin (AF) during pregnancy can impair intrauterine foetal growth, promote neonatal jaundice and cause perinatal death and preterm birth. In contrast, exposure to the Fusarium mycotoxin zearalenone (ZEA) leads to precocious sexual development, infertility, the development of malformations and the development of breast cancer. Unfortunately, the development of methods (biological, chemical or physical) to completely eliminate exposure to mycotoxins has limited practical application. The threat to human health from mycotoxins is real and further research is needed to improve our knowledge and specific public health interventions.

Stenotrophomonas pavanii DJL-M3 inoculated biochar stabilizes the rhizosphere soil homeostasis of carbendazim-stressed rice

Plant-microbe interactions have been effectively used in phytoremediation to reduce agrochemical contamination of crops and soils, but little information is available regarding the general effect of such association on rhizosphere soil homeostasis. In this study, we immobilized Stenotrophomonas pavanii DJL-M3, a carbendazim (CBZ)-degrading endophyte, in rice husk-derived biochar to control fungicide residue in the rice microenvironment. The influence of biochar inoculated with strain DJL-M3 on rhizobacterial communities was also investigated, including activity and fundamental function predictions. An adsorption kinetics test showed that strain DJL-M3 slowed the adsorption rate slightly without sacrificing the adsorption capacity of rice-husk biochar on CBZ. Immobilization in biochar helped S. pavanii DJL-M3 to establish an ecological niche in rhizosphere soils. This process significantly reduced CBZ levels in rice and rhizosphere soil while maintaining stable heterotrophic microbial respiration and carbon (C) metabolic activity. Soil amendment with the strain DJL-M3-biochar composite resulted in relatively little disturbance of fundamental soil functions, such as nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) cycling, which explained the better plant growth and higher soil fertility observed with CBZ contamination. Overall, the combination of biochar and S. pavanii DJL-M3 demonstrated the potential to safeguard the microbiological environment of rice.

Characterization of modified rice straw biochar in immobilizing Bacillus subtilis 168 and evaluation on its role as a novel agent for zearalenone-removal delivery

Microbial remediation of environmental pollutants can be advanced by carrier based cells immobilization. Whereas the effects of microorganisms immobilized on biochar for removal of zearalenone (ZEN) still remain unknown. Herein, this work presented the characterization of rice straw biochar (RSB) around modification in immobilizing Bacillus subtilis 168 and the role in fighting ZEN in vitro. Specifically, 10% of RSB with pH 5 condition were optimal for bearing cells, where majority of cells loaded inside the pore and minority on surface with agglomeration or scattering status. Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-inclusion RSB showed better performances including over 93% of ZEN detoxification rate (32.48% in free cells), cells preservation, and stability of detoxification in simulated gastrointestinal environment. RSB treated with sulphuric acid made nutrients adsorption generally less than 6.5%. No residues of α-ZEL and α-ZAL were found in ZEN biotransformation process whether by free cells or composites. Mechanism discussion implied that predominant monolayer chemisorption by RSB and subsequent biodegradation by extracellular enzymes from microorganism involved in ZEN-removal process. Collectively, these findings contribute to provide an applying strategy for coordination of biochar and microorganisms as potentially mycotoxin detoxifying agent in agricultural feed bioremediation and environmental decontamination processes.

Advanced mycotoxin control and decontamination techniques in view of an increased aflatoxin risk in Europe due to climate change

Aflatoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by Aspergillus spp. found in staple food and feed commodities worldwide. Aflatoxins are carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic, and pose a serious threat to the health of both humans and animals. The global economy and trade are significantly affected as well. Various models and datasets related to aflatoxins in maize have been developed and used but have not yet been linked. The prevention of crop loss due to aflatoxin contamination is complex and challenging. Hence, the set-up of advanced decontamination is crucial to cope with the challenge of climate change, growing population, unstable political scenarios, and food security problems also in European countries. After harvest, decontamination methods can be applied during transport, storage, or processing, but their application for aflatoxin reduction is still limited. Therefore, this review aims to investigate the effects of environmental factors on aflatoxin production because of climate change and to critically discuss the present-day and novel decontamination techniques to unravel gaps and limitations to propose them as a tool to tackle an increased aflatoxin risk in Europe.

Pyrolysis of citrus wastes for the simultaneous production of adsorbents for Cu(II), H2, and d-limonene

A route based on pyrolysis and physical activation with H₂O and CO₂ was proposed to reuse citrus waste traditionally discarded. The citrus wastes were orange peel (OP), mandarine peel (MP), rangpur lime peel (RLP), and sweet lime peel (SLP). The main aim was to use the solid products of this new route as adsorbents for Cu(II) ions. Copper ions are among the most important water pollutants due to their non-degradability, toxicity, and bioaccumulation, facilitating their inclusion and long persistence in the food chain. Besides the solid products, the liquid and gaseous fractions were evaluated for possible applications. Results showed that the citrus waste composition favored the thermochemical treatment. In addition, the following yields were obtained from the pyrolysis process: approximately 30 % wt. of biochar, 40 % wt. of non-condensable gases, and 30 % wt. of bio-oil. The biochars did not present a high specific surface area. Nevertheless, activated carbons with CO₂ and H₂O presented specific surface areas of 212.4 m²/g and 399.4 m²/g, respectively, and reached Cu(II) adsorption capacities of 28.2 mg g^-1 and 27.8 mg g^-1. The adsorption kinetic study revealed that the equilibrium was attained at 60 min and the pseudo-second-order model presented a better fit to the experimental data. The main generated gases were CO₂, which could be employed as an activating agent for activated carbon production. d-limonene, used for food and medicinal purposes, was the main constituent of the bio-oil.

Molecular clusters played an important role in the adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on carbonaceous materials

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are one of the most frequently detected hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment. They may form clusters because of the strong hydrophobic and π-π electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions among PAHs molecules. However, previous experimental studies and theoretical simulations generally ignored the impact of molecular clusters on the adsorption, which may result in the misunderstanding of the environmental fate and risk. In this work, naphthalene (NAP), phenanthrene (PHE), and pyrene (PYR) were selected to investigate intermolecular interaction as well as the consequent impact on their adsorption on graphene. The density field of C atoms in equilibrium configurations of self-interacted PAHs suggested that the formation of PAHs molecular clusters was a spontaneous process, and was favored in solvents with stronger polarity and for PAHs with more benzene rings. It should be noted that the molecular dynamics simulations with the initial state of molecular clusters matched better with the published experimental results compared with those of individual PAHs. The formed compact PAHs clusters in polar solvents increased the apparent PAHs adsorption, because of their higher hydrophobic and π-π EDA interactions. This study emphasized that the self-interaction of PAHs should be carefully considered in both experimental and theoretical simulation studies.
