Highly efficient removal of Cr(VI) by hexapod-like pyrite nanosheet clusters

Groundwater Cr(VI) contamination and remediation: A review from 1999 to 2022

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contamination of groundwater has traditionally been an environmental issue of great concern due to its bioaccumulative and highly toxic nature. This paper presents a review and bibliometric analysis of the literature on the interest area "Cr(VI) in groundwater" published in the Web of Science Core Collection from 1999 to 2022. First, information on 203 actual Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater sites around the world was summarized, and the basic characteristics of the sources and concentrations of contamination were derived. 68.95% of the sites were due to human causes and 56.43% of these sites had Cr(VI) concentrations in the range of 0-10 mg/L. At groundwater sites with high Cr(VI) contamination due to natural causes, 75.00% of the sites had Cr(VI) concentrations less than 0.2 mg/L. A total of 936 papers on "Cr(VI) in groundwater" were retrieved for bibliometric analysis: interest in research on Cr(VI) in groundwater has grown rapidly in recent years; 59.4% of the papers were published in the field of environmental sciences. A systematic review of the progress of studies on the Cr(VI) removal/remediation based on reduction, adsorption and biological processes is presented. Out of 666 papers on Cr(VI) removal/remediation, 512, 274, and 75 papers dealt with the topics of reduction, adsorption, and bioremediation, respectively. In addition, several studies have demonstrated the potential applicability of natural attenuation in the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. This paper will help researchers to understand and investigate methodological strategies to remove Cr(VI) from groundwater in a more targeted and effective manner.

Cost-effective removal of Cr(VI) ions from aqueous media using L-cysteine functionalized gold nanoparticles embedded in melamine-based covalent organic framework (Cys-AuNPs@COF)

Due to the growing concern about the environmental effects of heavy metals, researchers are developing materials that possess high absorption capacity in addition to selectivity and high absorption speed. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been considered as emerging and promising adsorbents for the removal of many types of pollutants. In this work, a novel and selective adsorbent (Cys-AuNPs@COF) was prepared by embedding gold nanoparticles functionalized with L-cysteine in melamine-based COF for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater. The synthesized Cys-AuNPs@COF were characterizedby Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental mapping (EMA) analysis. The removal of Cr(VI) ions was performed using a batch mode process by taking advantage of response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design (CCD) model. The maximum adsorption capacity of Cys-AuNPs@COF was 151.5 mg g-1. The experimental results followed the Langmuir model and showed pseudo-second-order kinetics. A portable, low-cost, and highly sensitive device with a smartphone colorimeter platform was developed for in situ measurement of trace amounts of chromium (VI) ions. Due to its simplicity and versatility, this method has the potential to serve as an alternative to conventional field analysis methods.

Using NH2-MIL-125(Ti) for efficient removal of Cr(VI) and RhB from aqueous solutions: Competitive and cooperative behavior in the binary system

The coexistence of inorganic and organic contaminants is a challenge for real-life water treatment applications. Therefore, in this research, we used NH2-MIL-125(Ti) to evaluate the single adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) or Rhodamine B (RhB) in an aqueous solution and further investigate simultaneous adsorption experiments to compare the adsorption behavior changes. The main influencing factors, for example, reaction time, initial concentration, reaction temperature, and pH were studied in detail. In all reaction systems, the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models were well illuminated the adsorption progress of Cr(VI) and RhB. Thermodynamic studies showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. As compared to the single system, the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) in the binary system gradually decreased as the additive amount of RhB increased, whereas the adsorption capacity of RhB in the binary system was expanded brilliantly. When the binary reaction system contained 100 mg/L Cr(VI), the removal rate of RhB increased to 97.58%. The formation of Cr(VI)-RhB and Cr(III)-RhB complexes was the cause that provided facilitation for the adsorption of RhB. These findings prove that the interactions during the water treatment process between contaminants may obtain additional benefits, contributing to a better adsorption capacity of co-existing contaminant.

Simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal mechanism in a pyrite-involved mixotrophic biofilter

Microbially mediated NO3--N and Cr(VI) reduction is being recognized as an eco-friendly and cost-effective remediation strategy. Iron sulfide mineral, as a natural inorganic electron donor, has a strong influence on NO3--N and Cr(VI) transformation, respectively. However, little is known about the simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal performance and underlying mechanism in an iron sulfide mineral-involved mixotrophic biofilter. This study demonstrated that the NO3--N and Cr(VI) removal efficiencies were stable at 62 ± 8% and 56 ± 10%, and most of them were eliminated in the 0-100-mm region of the biofilter. Cr(VI) was reduced to insoluble Cr(III) via microbial and chemical pathways, which was confirmed by the SEM-EDS morphology and the XPS spectra of biofilm and pyrite particles. SO42- was as a main byproduct of pyrite oxidation; however, the bacterial SO42- reduction synchronously occurred, evidenced by the variations of TOC and SO42- concentrations. These results suggested that there were complicated and intertwined biochemical relations between NO3--N/Cr(VI)/SO42-/DO (electron acceptors) and pyrite/organics (electron donors). Further investigation indicated that both the maximal biomass and greatest denitrifiers' relative abundances in microbial sample S1 well explained why the pollutants were removed in the 0-100-mm region. A variety of denitrifiers such as Pseudoxanthomona, Acidovorax, and Simplicispira were enriched, which probably were responsible for both NO3--N and Cr(VI) removal. Our findings advance the understanding of simultaneous nitrate and chromium removal in pyrite-involved mixotrophic systems and facilitate the new strategy development for nitrate and chromium remediation.

Mechanistic insights into the detoxification of Cr(VI) and immobilization of Cr and C during the biotransformation of ferrihydrite-polygalacturonic acid-Cr coprecipitates

Coupled reactions among chromium (Cr), organic matter (OM), and iron (Fe) minerals play significant roles in Cr and carbon (C) cycling in Cr-contaminated soils. Although the inhibitory effects of Cr or polysaccharides acid (PGA) on ferrihydrite transformation have been widely studied, mechanistic insights into detoxification of Cr(VI) and immobilization of Cr and C during the microbially mediated reductive transformation of ferrihydrite remain unclear. In this study, underlying sequestration mechanisms of Cr and C during dissimilatory Fe reduction at various Cr/Fe ratios were investigated. Solid-phase analysis showed that reductive transformation rates of ferrihydrite were impeded by high Cr/Fe ratio and more magnetite was found at low Cr loadings. Microscopic analysis showed that formed Cr(III) was immobilized by magnetite and goethite through isomorphous substitution, whereas PGA was adsorbed on the crystalline Fe mineral surface. Spectroscopic results uncovered that binding of Fe minerals and PGA was achieved by surface complexation of structural Fe with carboxyl functional groups, and that the adhesion order of PGA functional groups and Fe minerals was influenced by the Cr/Fe ratios. These findings have significant implications for remediating Cr contaminants, realizing C fixation, and developing a quantitative model for Cr and C cycling by coupling reductive transformation in Cr-contaminated environments.

The interaction of ZnO nanoparticles, Cr(VI), and microorganisms triggers a novel ROS scavenging strategy to inhibit microbial Cr(VI) reduction

Cr(VI) contaminated water usually contains other contaminants like engineered nanomaterials (ENMs). During the process of microbial treatment, the inevitable interaction of Cr(VI), ENMs, and microorganisms probably determines the efficiency of Cr(VI) biotransformation, however, the corresponding information remains elusive. This study investigated the interaction of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), Cr(VI), and Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB (hereafter BB), which changed the process of microbial Cr(VI) reduction. ZnO NPs inhibited Cr(VI) reduction, but had no effect on bacterial viability. In particular, Cr(VI) induced BB to produce organic acids and to drive Zn²⁺ dissolution from ZnO NPs inside and outside of cells. The dissolved Zn²⁺ not only promoted Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(V)/Cr(IV) by strengthening sugar metabolism and inducing increase in NAD(P)H production, but also hindered Cr(V)/Cr(IV) transformation to Cr(III) through down-regulating Cr(VI) reductase genes. A novel bacterial driven ROS scavenging mechanism leading to the inhibition of Cr(VI) reduction was elucidated. Specifically, the accumulated Cr(VI) and Cr(V)/Cr(IV) formed a redox dynamic equilibrium, which triggered the disproportionation of superoxide radicals mimicking superoxide dismutase through the flip-flop of Cr(VI) and Cr(V)/Cr(IV) in bacterial cells. This study provided a realistic insight into design the applicability of biological remediation technology for Cr(VI) contaminant and evaluating environmental risks of ENMs.

Cr(VI) removal from contaminated waters using ultra-thin layered meixnerite

Cr(VI) is of great concern to public health and environmental safety due to its high toxicity. Here, we report a low-cost yet highly efficient method to prepare a novel LDH, ultra-thin layered meixnerite, which performed superiorly in treatment of aqueous Cr(VI) with little secondary pollution being induced. The produced ultra-thin layered meixnerite was composed of nanoparticles with a thickness of around 7 nm, less than 9 times the thickness of a single LDH layer. The XRD patterns of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite, in which the characteristic diffraction peaks of a typical LDH were weakened or even disappeared, confirmed the successful delamination. This special morphology of the ultra-thin layered meixnerite was not only helpful to its full dispersion in the Cr(VI)-bearing solutions but also facilitated the formation of more active sorption sites on its external surface. As a result, the maximum sorption capacity of UTLM for Cr(VI) removal was 480.9 mg g^-1, far higher than that of OM (196.9 mg g^-1). In addition to electrostatic attraction and anion exchange, the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could also become restacked during removal of aqueous Cr(VI) to generate inner-sphere complexation, finally inducing an enhanced Cr(VI) uptake. Furthermore, XPS analysis characterized the promotion of the break of Al-OH bond with the increase in temperature, and the Cr-O peak increased correspondingly from 29.69% at 25 °C to 48.77% at 85 °C, resulting that the ultra-thin layered meixnerite could remove Cr(VI) more effectively at higher reaction temperatures. Therefore, ultra-thin layered meixnerite is very suitable for future application in treatment of industrial wastewaters with elevated temperatures.

Internal electric field induced photocarriers separation of nickel-doped pyrite/pyrite homojunction with rich sulfur vacancies for superior Cr(VI) reduction

Improving the separation efficiency and transfer ability of photoinduced electrons/holes in pyrite (FeS2)-based photocatalytic materials is significant for the photoreduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) but still remains a challenge. Herein, a novel homojunction was prepared through in-situ growth of nickel (Ni) doped FeS2 nanoparticles on FeS2 nanobelts (denoted as Ni-FeS2/FeS2). Systematical characterizations revealed that Ni doped FeS2 nanoparticles have been successfully in situ grown along the lattice of FeS2 nanobelts. Photoreduction experiments demonstrated that the Ni-FeS2/FeS2 homojunction with 2 mmol Ni doping contents (denoted as 2Ni-FeS2/FeS2) exhibited the optimum Cr(VI) reduction efficiency among the studied catalysts. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculated results verified that Ni doping could not only be advantageous for the formation of sulfur vacancies but also modify the band gap and band structure of FeS2 nanoparticles. Moreover, several doping energy levels caused by Ni doping have also appeared near the Fermi level of FeS2 nanoparticles. The migration paths of electrons and the existence of internal electric field (IEF) in homojunction were further verified by the calculation of work function. To sum up, the doping energy levels and IEF that produced by homojunction played important roles in accelerating the separation efficiency of its photogenerated carriers.

Flexible and easy-handling pristine polypyrrole membranes with bayberry-like vesicle structure for enhanced Cr(VI) removal from aqueous solution

Polypyrrole has been extensively explored for Cr(VI) removal from wastewater towing to the advantages of superior performance, low cost, facile synthesis, and high environmental stability. However, the unsatisfactory adsorption capacity and complicated process of adsorbent separation from aqueous solutions remain a huge challenge, limiting its practical application. Herein, a flexible PPy membrane with bayberry-like vesicle structures (PPy-B) was prepared via template-assisted interfacial polymerization. It was found that sodium sulfosalicylate not only improved the flexibility and strength of the PPy-B membrane for easy-handling but also participated in the polymerization of PPy as a dopant to improve the specific surface area and doping level for increasing adsorption sites. Benefiting from these, the easy-handling PPy-B membrane exhibited a high adsorption capacity (586.90-682.50 mg/g at 298-318 K), a high reusability (five adsorption-desorption cycles), and a high ultimate adsorption capacity after adsorption-desorption cycles until membrane failure (1174.86 mg/g at 298 K). The proposed mechanisms of the enhanced Cr(VI) removal involve electrostatic adsorption, reduction, and ion exchange. This flexible PPy membrane therefore shows attractive advantages in wastewater treatment.

Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by Bi2.15WO6 complexed with polydopamine: Contribution of the ligand-to-metal charge transfer path

Photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) in water environments attracts more attention; however, the mechanisms involved in this process have not been clearly elucidated yet. In this study, the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) by polydopamine modified Bi_2.15WO₆ (PDA/BWO) under visible light was conducted. Kinetics results show that PDA apparently accelerates the reduction of Cr(VI). The quasi-first-order kinetic constant of Cr(VI) reduction by 5PDA/BWO is 70.0 times that of the original BWO, reaching 0.070 min^-1. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman analyses confirm the formation of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) complex [Bi(III)OC] between PDA and BWO. The formed Bi(III)OC complex enhances visible light response and narrows the bandgap of PDA/BWO. The photoelectrochemical and photoluminescent characterization further reveals that the formed Bi(III)OC complex inhibits the recombination of carriers, thus enhancing the photocatalytic reactivity of PDA/BWO. Electrons, are derived from three paths, including dye sensitization, LMCT and bandgap excitation, contribute to Cr(VI) reduction by PDA/BWO. This study provides new insights on the paths of Cr(VI) reduction by PDA/BWO under visible light.
