Superhydrophobic sponges based on green deep eutectic solvents for spill oil removal from water

Additive-free Absorbable Keratin Sponge With Procoagulant Activity for Noncompressible Hemostasis

The development of a natural, additive-free, absorbable sponge with procoagulant activity for noncompressible hemostasis remains a challenging task. In this study, we extracted high molecular weight keratin (HK) from human hair and transformed it into a hemostatic sponge with a well-interconnected pore structure using a foaming technique, freeze-drying, and oxidation cross-linking. By controlling the cross-linking degree, the resulting sponge demonstrated excellent liquid absorption ability, shape recovery characteristics, and robust mechanical properties. The HK10 sponge exhibited rapid liquid absorption, expanding up to 600% within 5 s. Moreover, the HK sponge showed superior platelet activation and blood cell adhesion capabilities. In SD rat liver defect models, the sponges demonstrated excellent hemostatic performance by sealing the wound and expediting coagulation, reducing the hemostatic time from 825 to 297 s. Furthermore, HK sponges have excellent biosafety, positioning them as a promising absorbable sponge with the potential for the treatment of noncompressible hemostasis.

Proceeding of catalytic water splitting on Cu/Ce@g-C3N4 photocatalysts: an exceptional approach for sunlight-driven hydrogen generation

Increasing energy demands and environmental problems require carbon-free and renewable energy generation systems. For this purpose, we have synthesized efficient photocatalysts (i.e., g-C3N4, Cu@g-C3N4, Ce@g-C3N4 and Cu/Ce@g-C3N4) for H2 evolution from water splitting. Their optical, structural and electrochemical properties were investigated by UV-Vis-DRS, PL, XRD, FTIR, Raman and EIS methods. Their surface morphologies were evaluated by AFM and SEM analyses. Their chemical characteristics, compositions and stability were assessed using XPS, EDX and TGA techniques. Photoreactions were performed in a quartz reactor (150 mL/Velp-UK), whereas hydrogen generation activities were monitored using a GC-TCD (Shimadzu-2014/Japan). The results depicted that Cu/Ce@g-C3N4 catalysts are the most active catalysts that deliver 23.94 mmol g-1 h-1 of H2. The higher rate of H2 evolution was attributed to the active synergism between Ce and Cu metals and the impact of surface plasmon electrons (SPEs) of Cu that were produced during the photoreaction. The rate of H2 production was optimized by controlling various factors, including the catalyst amount, light intensity, pH, and temperature of the reaction mixture. It has been concluded that the current study holds promise to replace the conventional and costly catalysts used for hydrogen generation technologies.

Magnetic superhydrophobic melamine sponges for crude oil removal from water

This paper proposes the preparation of a new sorbent material based on melamine sponges (MS) with superhydrophobic, superoleophilic, and magnetic properties. This study involved impregnating the surface of commercially available MS with eco-friendly deep eutectic solvents (DES) and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The DES selection was based on the screening of 105 eutectic mixtures using COSMO-RS modeling. Other parameters affecting the efficiency and selectivity of oil removal from water were optimized using the Box-Bhenken model. Menthol:Thymol (1:1)@Fe3O4-MS exhibited the highest sorption capacity for real crude oils (101.7-127.3 g/g). This new sponge demonstrated paramagnetic behavior (31.06 emu/g), superhydrophobicity (151°), superoleophobicity (0°), low density (15.6 mg/cm3), high porosity (99 %), and excellent mechanical stability. Furthermore, it allows multiple regeneration processes without losing its sorption capacity. Based on these benefits, Menthol:Thymol (1:1)@Fe3O4-MS shows promise as an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly substitute for the existing sorbents.

Development of a plastic waste treatment process by combining deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment and bioaugmentation with a plastic-degrading bacterial consortium

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a petroleum-based plastic, and polylactic acid (PLA), a biobased plastic, have a similar visual appearance thus they usually end up in municipal waste treatment facilities. The objective of this project was to develop an effective PET and PLA waste treatment process that involves pretreatment with deep eutectic solvent (DES) followed by biodegradation with a plastic-degrading bacterial consortium in a composting system. The DES used was a mixture of choline chloride and glycerol, while the bacterial strains (Chitinophaga jiangningensis EA02, Nocardioides zeae EA12, Stenotrophomonas pavanii EA33, Gordonia desulfuricans EA63, Achromobacter xylosoxidans A9 and Mycolicibacterium parafortuitum J101) used to prepare the bacterial consortium were selected based on their ability to biodegrade PET, PLA, and plasticizer. The plastic samples (a PET bottle, PLA cup, and PLA film) were pretreated with DES through a dip-coating method. The DES-coated plastic samples exhibited higher surface wettability and biofilm formation, indicating that DES increases the hydrophilicity of the plastic and facilitates bacterial attachment to the plastic surface. The combined action of DES pretreatment and bioaugmentation with a plastic-degrading bacterial consortium led to improved degradation of PET and PLA samples in various environments, including aqueous media at ambient temperature, lab-scale traditional composting, and pilot-scale composting.

COSMO Models for the Pharmaceutical Development of Parenteral Drug Formulations

The aqueous solubility of active pharmaceutical ingredients is one of the most important features to be considered during the development of parenteral formulations in the pharmaceutical industry. Computational modelling has become in the last years an integral part of pharmaceutical development. In this context, ab initio computational models, such as COnductor-like Screening MOdel (COSMO), have been proposed as promising tools for the prediction of results without the effective use of resources. Nevertheless, despite the clear evaluation of computational resources, some authors had not achieved satisfying results and new calculations and algorithms have been proposed over the years to improve the outcomes. In the development and production of aqueous parenteral formulations, the solubility of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) in an aqueous and biocompatible vehicle is a decisive step. This work aims to study the hypothesis that COSMO models could be useful in the development of new parenteral formulations, mainly aqueous ones.

VOCs absorption from gas streams using deep eutectic solvents - A review

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the most severe atmospheric pollutants. They are mainly emitted into the atmosphere from anthropogenic sources such as automobile exhaust, incomplete fuel combustion, and various industrial processes. VOCs not only cause hazards to human health or the environment but also adversely affect industrial installation components due to their specific properties, i.e., corrosive and reactivity. Therefore, much attention is being paid to developing new methods for capturing VOCs from gaseous streams, i.e., air, process streams, waste streams, or gaseous fuels. Among the available technologies, absorption based on deep eutectic solvents (DES) is widely studied as a green alternative to other commercial processes. This literature review presents a critical summary of the achievements in capturing individual VOCs using DES. The types of used DES and their physicochemical properties affecting absorption efficiency, available methods for evaluating the effectiveness of new technologies, and the possibility of regeneration of DES are described. In addition, critical comments on the new gas purification methods and future perspectives are included.

Fabrication of FeVO4/RGO Nanocomposite: An Amperometric Probe for Sensitive Detection of Methyl Parathion in Green Beans and Solar Light-Induced Degradation

Pesticide usage is one of the significant issues in modern agricultural practices; hence, monitoring pesticide content and its degradation is of utmost importance. A novel and simple one-pot deep eutectic solvent-based solvothermal method has been developed for the synthesis of FeVO₄/reduced graphene oxide (FeV/RGO) nanocomposite. The band gap of FeV decreased upon anchoring with RGO. Enhanced activity in the detection and photocatalytic degradation has been achieved in the FeV/RGO nanocomposite compared to pure FeV and RGO. FeV/RGO was used to modify glassy carbon electrode (GCE), and the fabricated electrode was evaluated for its electrochemical detection of methyl parathion (MP). The amperometric technique was found to be more sensitive with a 0.001-260 μM (two linear ranges; 0.001-20 and 25-260 μM) wide linear range and low limit of detection value (0.70 nM). The practical applicability of modified GCE is more selective and sensitive to real samples like river water and green beans. Photocatalytic degradation of MP has been examined using FeV, RGO, and FeV/RGO nanocomposite. FeV/RGO managed to degrade 95% of MP under solar light in 80 min. Degradation parameters were optimized carefully to attain maximum efficiency. Degradation intermediates were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The degradation mechanism has been studied in detail. FeV/RGO could serve as a material of choice in the field of electrochemical sensors as well as heterogeneous catalysis toward environmental remediation.

Novel Magnetically Driven Superhydrophobic Sponges Coated with Asphaltene/Kaolin Nanoparticles for Effective Oil Spill Cleanup

Fast and effective cleanup of oil spills remains a global challenge. A modified commercial sponge with superhydrophobicity, strong absorption capacity, outstanding magnetic response, and fire resistance were fabricated by a facile and inexpensive route of dip-coated melamine sponge carbonization. The low-cost petroleum asphaltene and kaolin nanoparticles were used as the dip-coating reagent. High absorption capacity of the fabricated sponges allowed rapid and continuous removal of oil contaminants. Taking advantage of the good refractory property, the sponges can be used in burning conditions and directly reused after burning out of the absorbed oil. Reusability tests showed that the modified sponges still maintained high absorption capacity (>85%) after six regeneration and reuse cycles. These characteristics make the fabricated sponge a promising aid to promote effective in situ burning cleanup of oil spills, contributing as a magnetic oil collector and a fire-resistant flexible boom. An example usage scenario of the sponges applied to in situ burning cleanup of oil spills is described.
