Control of arsenic release from paddy soils using alginate encapsulated calcium peroxide

Role of organic and inorganic amendments on physiological attributes of germinating pea seedlings under arsenic stress

There are scarce data regarding the effects of soil amendments on biophysicochemical responses of plants at the early stages of growth/germination. This study critically compares the effects of ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic-acid (EDTA) and calcium (Ca) on biophysicochemical responses of germinating pea seedlings under varied arsenic levels (As, 25, 125, 250 µM). Arsenic alone enhanced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level in pea roots (176%) and shoot (89%), which significantly reduced seed germination percentage, pigment contents, and growth parameters. Presence of EDTA and Ca in growth culture minimized the toxic effects of As on pea seedlings, EDTA being more pertinent than Ca. Both the amendments decreased H2O2 levels in pea tissues (16% in shoot and 13% in roots by EDTA, and 7% by Ca in shoot), and maintained seed germination, pigment contents, and growth parameters of peas close to those of the control treatment. The effects of all As-treatments were more pronounced in the pea roots than in the shoot. The presence of organic and inorganic amendments can play a useful role in alleviating As toxicity at the early stages of pea growth. The scarcity of data demands comparing plant biophysicochemical responses at different stages of plant growth (germinating vs mature) in future studies.

Remarkable adsorption of As(V) by Fe3+ and Mg2+ modified alginate porous beads (Fe/Mg-SA) via a facile method

Although sodium alginate (SA) is frequently utilized because of its good gelling properties, the substance's dearth of adsorption active sites prevents it from effectively removing heavy metals. Herein, SA was used as the base material to form a cross-linked structure with Fe3+ and Mg2+, and gel beads with a diameter of 2.0 ± 0.1 mm with specific adsorption on As(V) were synthesized as adsorbent (Fe/Mg-SA). Fe/Mg-SA was systematically characterized, and its adsorption properties were investigated by varying several conditions. Fe/Mg-SA had a wide pH application range. The adsorption kinetics revealed that a quasi-secondary kinetic model was followed. The adsorption process is linked to the complexation of hydroxyl and AsO43-, chemisorption predominated the adsorption process. The maximal adsorption capacity of Fe/Mg-SA is determined by fitting the Langmuir model to be 37.4 mg/g. Compared to other adsorbents, it is simpler to synthesis, more effective and cheaper. Each treatment of 1 m3 wastewater of Fe/Mg-SA only costs ¥ 38.612. The novel gel beads synthesized provides a better option for purifying groundwater contaminated with As(V).

Alginate-based composites as novel soil conditioners for sustainable applications in agriculture: A critical review

The development of alginate-based composites in agriculture to combat nutrient loss and drought for sustainable development has drawn increasing attention in the scientific community. Existing studies are however scattered, and the retention and slow-release mechanisms of alginate-based composites are not well understood. This paper systematically reviews the current literature on the preparation, characterization, and agricultural applications of various alginate-based composites. The synthesis methods of alginate-based composites are firstly summarized, followed by a review of available analytical techniques to characterize alginate-based composites for the attainment of their desired performance. Secondly, the performance and controlling factors for agricultural applications of alginate-based composites are discussed, including aquasorb, slow-release fertilizer, soil amendment, microbial inoculants, and controlled release of pesticides for pest management. Finally, suggestions and future perspectives are proposed to expand the applications of alginate-based composites for sustainable agriculture.

Arsenic release dynamics of paddy field soil during groundwater irrigation and natural flooding

Irrigation water in rice cultivation significantly affects the arsenic (As) mobilization in the paddy field soil. This research assessed the effect of rainwater (RW) and groundwater (GW) on the dissolution dynamics of arsenic (As) in paddy field soil. Up-flow column flooding experiments were conducted continuously for 80 d with simulated RW and GW to evaluate As dissolution phenomena in actual field conditions. Arsenic dissolution from the soil was lower in GW (309 μg/kg) irrigation than in RW flooding conditions (1086 μg/kg). The redox potential (Eh) of the soil pore water decreased, and pH increased over-irrigation time in both flooding conditions. The dissolution of arsenic (As) and iron (Fe) in the soil pore increased, while the dissolution of manganese (Mn) decreased over flooding time. The release of As in the soil pore water was attributed to the dissolution of Fe-As and Mn-As minerals and microbial reduction of As. Fe-As dissolution ratios in the soil pore water were relatively low and estimated as 0.68 mol/mol and 4.9 mol/mol for RW and GW, respectively. The dissolution of As and Mn dominated in the initial phase (0-40 d) of flooding, while the dissolution of As and Fe dominated in the second phase (40-80 d). The release of As was much lower in GW flooding than in RW flooding conditions. The Presence of Ca, Mg, and Mn in the GW facilitated the reduction of As dissolution by precipitating Ca-As and Mg-As and the oxidizing dissolved Mn in the soil pore water. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of As release during monsoon flooding and groundwater flooding to assess the potential risks of As contamination in rice grown in paddy field soils.

Mitigation of arsenic release by calcium peroxide (CaO2) and rice straw biochar in paddy soil

Biochar has a great potential in the stabilization of soil heavy metals; however, the application can actually enhance the mobility of Arsenic (As) in soil. Here, a biochar-coupled calcium peroxide system was proposed to control the increase in As mobility caused by biochar amendment in paddy soil environment. The capability of rice straw biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C (RB) and CaO₂ to control As mobility was evaluated by incubation for 91 days. CaO₂ encapsulation was performed for pH control of CaO₂, and As mobility was evaluated using a mixture of RB + CaO₂ powder (CaO₂-p), and RB + CaO₂ bead (CaO₂-b), respectively. The control soil solely and RB alone were included for comparison. The combination of RB with CaO₂ exhibited remarkable performance in controlling As mobility in soil, and As mobility decreased by 40.2% (RB + CaO₂-p) and 58.9% (RB + CaO₂-b) compared to RB alone. The result was due to high dissolved oxygen (6 mg L^-1 in RB + CaO₂-p and RB + CaO₂-b) and calcium concentrations (296.3 mg L^-1 in RB + CaO₂-b); oxygen (O₂) and Ca²⁺ derived from CaO₂ is able to prevent the reductive dissolution and chelate-promoted dissolution of As bound to iron (Fe) oxide by biochar. This study revealed that the simultaneous application of CaO₂ and biochar could be a promising way to mitigate the environmental risk of As.

Porcupine-inspired microneedles coupled with an adhesive back patching as dressing for accelerating diabetic wound healing

Diabetes chronic wound is a severe and frequently occurring medical issue in patients with diabetes that often leads to more serious complications. Microneedles (MNs) can be used for wound healing as they can effectively pierce the epidermis and inject drugs into the wound tissue. However, common MN patches cannot provide sufficient skin adhesion to prevent detachment from the wound area. Inspired by the barb hangnail microstructure of porcupine quills, a porcupine quill-like multilayer MN patch with an adhesive back patching for tissue adhesion and diabetic wound healing was designed. Sodium hyaluronate-modified CaO2 nanoparticles and metformin (hypoglycemic agent) were loaded into the polycaprolactone tips of MNs, endowing them with exceptional antibacterial ability and hypoglycemic effect. A flexible and adhesive back patching was formed by polyacrylamide-polydopamine/Cu2+ composite hydrogel, which ensures that the MN patches do not peel off from the application sites and reduce bacterial infection. The bioinspired multilayer structure of MN patches exhibits satisfactory mechanical and antibacterial properties, which is a potential multifunctional dressing platform for promoting wound healing. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: The porcupine quill-like microneedles (MNs) with PAM-PDA/Cu2+ (PPC) composite hydrogel back patching have been fabricated, which can enhance the adhesion property of MNs to the skin through a physical interlock of multilayer MNs and chemical bonding of hydrogel patching. CaO2-HA NPs and metformin were loaded into the polycaprolactone tips of MNs, endowing them with the exceptional antibacterial ability and hypoglycemic effect, which could accelerate diabetic wound healing. As a safe and effective strategy in transdermal delivery of drugs, the as-fabricated flexible multilayer MN patch with good antibacterial, hypoglycemic, and biocompatibility has been used to promote the healing of diabetic wound by releasing oxygen and inhibiting inflammation at the wound site.

A novel thermosensitive persulfate controlled-release hydrogel based on agarose/silica composite for sustained nitrobenzene degradation from groundwater

The increasing risk of organic contamination of groundwater poses a serious threat to the environment and human health, causing an urgent need to develop long-lasting and adaptable remediation materials. Controlled-release materials (CRMs) are capable of encapsulating oxidants to achieve long-lasting release properties in aquifers and considered to be effective strategies in groundwater remediation. In this study, novel hydrogels (ASGs) with thermosensitive properties were prepared based on agarose and silica to achieve controlled persulfate (PS) release. By adjusting the composition ratio, the gelation time and internal pore structure of the hydrogels were regulated for groundwater application, which in turn affected the PS encapsulated amount and release properties. The hydrogels exhibited significant temperature responsiveness, with 6.8 times faster gelation rates and 2.8 times longer controlled release ability at 10 ℃ than at 30 ℃. The ASGs were further combined with zero-valent iron to achieve long-lasting degradation of the typical nitrobenzene compound 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), and the degradation performance was maintained at 50 % within 14 PV, which was significantly improved compared with that of the PS/ZVI system. This study provided new concepts for the design of controlled-release materials and theoretical support for the remediation of organic contamination.
