Cesium adsorption from an aqueous medium for environmental remediation: A comprehensive analysis of adsorbents, sources, factors, models, challenges, and opportunities

Considering the widespread and indispensable nature of nuclear energy for future power generation, there is a concurrent increase in the discharge of radioactive Cs into water streams. Recent studies have demonstrated that adsorption is crucial in removing Cs from wastewater for environmental remediation. However, the existing literature lacks comprehensive studies on various adsorption methods, the capacities or efficiencies of adsorbents, influencing factors, isotherm and kinetic models of the Cs adsorption process. A bibliometric and comprehensive analysis was conducted using 1179 publications from the Web of Science Core Collection spanning from 2014 to 2023. It reviews and summarizes current publication trends, active countries, adsorption methods, adsorption capacities or efficiencies of adsorbents, tested water sources, influencing factors, isotherm, and kinetic models of Cs adsorption. The selection of suitable adsorbents and operating parameters is identified as a crucial factor. Over the past decade, due to their notable capacity for Cs adsorption, considerable research has focused on novel adsorbents, such as Prussian blue, graphene oxide, hydrogel, and nanoadsorbents (NA). However, there remains a need for further development of application-oriented laboratory-scale experiments. Future research directions should encompass exploring adsorption mechanisms, developing new adsorbents or their combinations, practical applications of lab-scale studies, and recycling radioactive Cs from wastewater. Drawing upon this literature review, we present the most recent research patterns concerning adsorbents to remove Cs, outline potential avenues for future research, and delineate the obstacles hindering effective adsorption. This comprehensive bibliometric review provides valuable insights into prevalent research focal points and emerging trends, serving as a helpful resource for researchers and policymakers seeking to understand the dynamics of adsorbents for Cs removal from water.

Unraveling the cation adsorption of geopolymer binder: A molecular dynamics study

Geopolymers play a significant role in remediation of heavy metal contamination and are attracting increasing interests. Sodium aluminosilicate hydrate (NASH) is the prime hydration substance of geopolymers which exhibits excellent adsorption capacity, however, the mechanism of metal cation adsorption at the NASH interface remains unclear. In this study, the adsorption behavior of cations at the NASH interface was investigated in depth, and the effects of Si/Al ratios, ion concentration and ion type on adsorption behavior were also analyzed. Furthermore, three Si/Al ratio models of NASH gel were modified and developed by molecular dynamics simulation, and validated by experiments. The result showed that electrostatic attraction and ion exchange played the major role in adsorbing three cations on the surface of NASH gel. For cations with the same charge number, ionic radius was inversely proportional to the cation exchange and adsorption capacity. Cations with lower ionic potential, among those with different charge numbers, were easier to be adsorbed onto the NASH surface. Therefore, the adsorption capacity of NASH for the three adsorbents was in the order of Na⁺ > Cs⁺ > Pb²⁺. The adsorption capacity of NASH gel for cations increased with the increasing of Al/Si and decreased with the increasing of cation concentration, which was attributed to the increased electrostatic attraction on the NASH surface and the limited number of adsorption sites. The derived microstructure and dynamics information are beneficial for profoundly understanding the adsorption mechanisms of geopolymers on cations.

3D porous carbon-embedded nZVI@Fe2O3 nanoarchitectures enable prominent performance and recyclability in antibiotic removal

Overcoming the instability and poor recyclability during the practical applications of contaminant scavengers is a challenging topic. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected carbon aerogel (nZVI@Fe₂O₃/PC) embedding a core-shell nanostructure of nZVI@Fe₂O₃ was elaborately designed and fabricated via an in-situ self-assembly process. The porous carbon with 3D network architecture exhibits strong adsorption towards various antibiotic contaminants in water, where the stably embedded nZVI@Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles not only serve as magnetic seeds for recycling, but also avoid the shedding and oxidation of nZVI in the adsorption process. As a result, nZVI@Fe₂O₃/PC efficiently captures sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfamethazine (SMZ), ciprofloxacin (CIP), tetracycline (TC) and other antibiotics in water. In particular, an excellent adsorptive removal capacity of 329 mg g^-1 and a rapid capture kinetics (99% of removal efficiency in 10 min) under a wide pH adaptability (2-8) are achieved using nZVI@Fe₂O₃/PC as an SMX scavenger. nZVI@Fe₂O₃/PC displays exceptional long-term stability given that it shows excellent magnetic property after it is stored in water solution for 60 d, making it an ideal stable scavenger for contaminants in an etching-resistant and efficient manner. This work would also provide a general strategy to develop other stable iron-based functional architectures for efficient catalytic degradation, energy conversion and biomedicine.
