Simultaneous adsorption of Cd(II) and degradation of OTC by activated biochar with ferrate: Efficiency and mechanism

Pb/As simultaneous removal from soil leachate of Pb/Zn smelting sites by magnetic biochar

Lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) contaminated soils, caused by Pb and zinc (Zn) smelting activities, pose an urgent environmental issue. Magnetic biochar (MB) has been regarded as an increasingly appealing candidate for the remediation of multi-metals in contaminated soils or their leachate. Finding economically feasible preparation methods for MB and demonstrating its remediation potential is desperately required for the remediation of such complex smelting sites. In this study, a modified MB was prepared using an optimized co-precipitation method, and its application potential for Pb/As simultaneous removal based on the basic properties of a typical Pb/Zn smelting site was evaluated. The surface modifications of MB facilitated the encapsulation of various ultrafine iron oxide particles, predominantly γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, whilst notably enhancing the presence of oxygen-containing surface functional groups. The adsorption of Pb(II) and As(III) by MB was well-described using the pseudo-second-order adsorption and Langmuir models. The existence of SO42- and Ca2+ in the soil leachate competed with the adsorption sites for Pb(II) and As(III). Notably, within the pH range of 5-9, the adsorption efficiency of Pb(II) by MB increased with the rising solution pH, whereas alterations in pH minimally affected the removal rate of As(III), maintaining a consistent removal rate exceeding 95%. Furthermore, dissolved organic matter (DOM) abundant in organic functional groups, particularly CO and CC groups, significantly augmented the adsorption affinity for both Pb(II) and As(III). An application rate of 2 g/L could effectively reduce the concentration of Pb(II) and As(III) in soil leachate to <0.05 mg/L. The findings demonstrated the potential of the prepared MB for simultaneous removal of As(III) and Pb(II) in soil leachate, which should be beneficial to multi-metals polluted soil remediation in Pb/Zn smelting sites.

Novel enhanced defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acids by biochar-assisted ultrasound coupling ferrate: Performance and mechanism

An ultrasound (US)/biochar (BC)/ferrate (Fe (VI)) system was firstly proposed to enhance perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) defluorination. It achieved 93 % defluorination optimally, higher than the sum of 77 % (28 % and 49 % for US/BC and US/Fe (VI) respectively), implying synergistic effect. Besides, the mechanism study confirmed that, this system can not only increase the specific surface area of BC and the generation of reactive oxidant species (ROS), enriching the active sites and forming new oxygen-containing functional groups, but also promote the formation of intermediate iron species. The PFOA degradation in the US/BC/Fe (VI) was probably an adsorption-degradation process, both ROS and electron transfer promoted the defluorination. Additionally, its sustainability was also demonstrated with 14 % reduced defluorination percentage after five cycles of BC. Overall, the synergistic effect of the US/BC/Fe (VI) and its enhancing mechanism for PFOA defluorination were clarified firstly, which contributes to the development of biochar for assisting polyfluoroalkyl substances degradation.

Adsorption mechanism of Cd2+ on microbial inoculant and its potential for remediation Cd-polluted farmland soils

The adsorption characteristics and mechanism of Cd2+ on microbial inoculant (MI) mainly composed of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, and its potential for remediation Cd polluted soils through batch adsorption and soil incubation experiments. It was found that the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetics were more in line with the adsorption processes of Cd2+. The maximum adsorption capacity predicted by Langmuir isotherm model suggested that of MI was 57.38 mg g-1. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) images exhibited the surface structure of MI was damaged to varying degrees after adsorption, and Cd element was distributed on the surface of MI through ion exchange. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that CdCO3 was formed on the surface of MI. Moreover, the functional groups (-OH, C-H, and -NH) involved in the adsorption of Cd2+ through fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). After applying MI to Cd-contaminated soil, it was found that soil pH, conductivity (EC) and soil organic matter (SOM) increased by 0.84 %-2.43 %, 31.6 %-241.48 %, and 8.11 %-24.1 %, respectively, when compared with the control treatments. The content of DTPA-Cd in the soils was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced by 15.48 %-29.68 % in contrast with CK, and the Cd speciation was transformed into a more stable residual fraction. The activities of urease, phosphatase and sucrose were increased by 3.5 %-45.18 %, 57.00 %-134.18 % and 52.51 %-70.52 %, respectively, compared with CK. Therefore, MI could be used as an ecofriendly and sustainable material for bioremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Constructing N,S co-doped network biochar confined CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles adsorbent: Insights into the synergistic and competitive adsorption of Pb2+ and ciprofloxacin

To solve the problem of biochar lack of adsorption sites for heavy metal ions and the difficulty of recycling, CoFe2O4 magnetic nanoparticles confined in nitrogen, sulfur co-doped 3D network biochar matrix (C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC) was designed and fabricated successfully. The obtained C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC displays remarkable adsorption performance for both Pb2+ and ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal at the single or binary system due to the role of N,S as metal ion anchoring compared to the N,S-free sample (CoFe2O4/BC). N,S co-doped BC not only participates in adsorption reaction but also effectively inhibites the agglomeration of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles and increases the active sites as a carrier at the same time. In the single system, CoFe2O4/N,S-BC demonstrates a fast adsorption rate (equilibrium time: 30 min) and high adsorption capacity (224.77 mg g-1 for Pb2+, 400.11 mg g-1 for CIP) towards Pb2+ and CIP. The adsorption process is befitted pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium data are in great pertinence with Langmuir model. In the binary system, the maximum adsorption capacity of CoFe2O4/N,S-BC for Pb2+ and CIP is 244.80 mg g-1 (CIP: 10.00 mg L-1) and 418.42 mg g-1 (Pb2+: 10.00 mg L-1), respectively. The adsorption mechanism is discussed based on the experimental results. Moreover, C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC shows good practical water treatment capacity, anti-interference ability and stable reusability (the removal efficiency＞80% after eight cycles). The rapid, multifunctional, reusable, and easily separable adsorption properties make C-CoFe2O4/N,S-BC promising for efficient environmental remediation. This study also offers a viable method for the construction of adsorption material for complex wastewater treatment.

Quaternary ammonium-functionalized rosin-derived resin for the high-performance capture of caramels: Experiments and quantum chemical theory simulations

Water contamination caused by discharge of spent washes containing colorants remains controversial. In this study, rosin-derived strongly basic macroporous anion-adsorption resin (RSBMAR) was designed as an advanced adsorbent for scavenging caramel, the most recalcitrant colorant in spent washes. Toxicity tests suggest that RSBMAR is environmentally friendly and hardly threatens aquatic organisms. RSBMAR exhibits outstanding caramel capture efficiency because of its rich target quaternary ammonium (-R4N+) and protonated tertiary amine (-R3NH+) groups, abundant porous structure, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, and good sphericity. The caramel adsorption capacity of RSBMAR was 165.86 mg/g and the decolorization efficiency reached 96.75%. After five cycles, the spent RSBMAR maintained a high decolorization rate, indicating excellent renewability. Multiple characterizations indicated that caramel capture was largely mediated by charge interaction between -R4N+/-R3NH+ (RSBMAR) and -RCOO-/-RCOOH (caramel), followed by H-bonds. Quantum chemical theory simulations, including electrostatic potential, local ionization energy, frontier molecular orbitals, and independent gradient model analyses, further visualized caramel capture mechanisms at atomic level. Hirshfeld surface analysis revealed that RSBMAR acts as both an H-bond donor and acceptor during caramel uptake. Dynamic adsorption was performed to treat real wastewater, laying the foundation for the industrial application of RSBMAR.

Adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Cd(II) from wastewater by modified chicken manure biochar

Due to the threat to food supply and human health posed by cadmium-contaminated wastewater, a highly effective adsorbent is under necessary development to remove cadmium from wastewater. In this study, four new types of modified biochars with different modifier concentrations were prepared from chicken manure using K2FeO4 as a modifier, and the modified biochar KFBC1 with the best adsorption effect was obtained through optimal experiments. Various characterization analyses have shown that KFBC1 has a rough surface structure, abundant pore structure, and a large number of functional groups. Additionally, iron oxides are introduced on the surface of the biochar, which provided a favorable condition for the adsorption of Cd(II) in wastewater. The adsorption performance of Cd(II) on the biochar before and after modification was investigated through batch adsorption experiments. The adsorption kinetic model of KFBC1 to Cd(II) in solution was in accordance with the quasi-secondary kinetic model, and the adsorption isothermal model was in accordance with the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 330.06 mg/g, which was 5.15 fold of pristine BC. Meanwhile, the adsorption rate of Cd(II) by KFBC1 was positively correlated with dosage and pH. Pore adsorption, ion exchange, surface precipitation, interaction with -π electrons, and complexation of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface were considered as important mechanisms for the removal of Cd(II) by KFBC1. According to the results, KFBC1 is a novel and efficient adsorbent that can be used as a treatment agent for cadmium-contaminated wastewater.

Removal of oxytetracycline from water by S-doped MIL-53(Fe): Synergistic effect of surface adsorption and persulfate activation

In this study, a novel catalyst based on MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized and modified through sublimed sulfur (S-MIL-53(Fe)) to induce a synergistic effect of surface adsorption and persulfate activation. The S-doped modification not only increased the surface area but also accelerated the electron transfer process of the iron cycle. The performance of the newly synthesized S-MIL-53(Fe) adsorptive catalyst was evaluated by chemical adsorption and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activated removal of an emerging pollutants, oxytetracycline (OTC). The S-MIL-53(Fe) adsorptive catalyst was able to adsorb 61.7% of OTC after 120 min, and the removal efficiency reached 84.8% within 5 min after PDS dosing. The boosting effect of sulfur on the system was confirmed by characterization analysis and experimental testing. Even after 7 cycles, the removal efficiency of S-MIL-53(Fe) (69.0%) for OTC remained superior to that of pure MIL-53(Fe) (25.1%). Additionally, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm model of the material were investigated. The possible OTC degrading process was proposed based on radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). This study provides a feasible way to fabricate an S-doped MIL-53(Fe) adsorptive catalyst for the remediation of antibiotics-containing wastewater.

Simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation of oxytetracycline in wastewater by Mycolicibacterium sp. immobilized on magnetic biochar

Due to the adverse effects of long-term oxytetracycline (OTC) residues in aquatic environments, an effective treatment is urgently needed. Immobilized microbial technology has been widely explored in the treatment of various organic pollutants in aquatic environments with its excellent environmental adaptability. Nevertheless, studies on its application in the removal of antibiotics are relatively scarce and not in sufficient depth. Only a few studies have further investigated the final fate of antibiotics in the immobilized bacteria system. In this study, a novel kind of OTC-degrading bacteria Mycolicibacterium sp. was immobilized on straw biochar and magnetic biochar, respectively. Magnetic biochar was proved to be a more satisfactory immobilization carrier due to its superior property and the advantage of easy recycling. Compared with free bacteria, immobilized bacteria had stronger environmental adaptability under different OTC concentrations, pH, and heavy metal ions. After 5 cycles, immobilized bacteria could still remove 71.8% of OTC, indicating that it had a stable recyclability. Besides, OTC in real swine wastewater was completely removed by immobilized bacteria within 2 days. The results of FTIR showed that bacteria were successfully immobilized on biochar and O-H, N-H, and C-N groups might be involved in the removal of OTC. The fate analysis indicated that OTC was removed by simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation, while biodegradation (92.8%) played a dominant role in the immobilized bacteria system. Meanwhile, the amount of adsorbed OTC (7.20%) was rather small, which could effectively decrease the secondary pollution of OTC. At last, new degradation pathways of OTC were proposed. This study provides an eco-friendly and effective approach to remedy OTC pollution in wastewater.

Enhanced adsorption of phenol from aqueous solution by KOH combined Fe-Zn bimetallic oxide co-pyrolysis biochar: Fabrication, performance, and mechanism

In this study, impregnation combined with KOH activation with different mixing methods was used to prepare magnetic biochar. The effects of synthetic method on biochar physicochemical properties and adsorption performance were explored. The results showed that treatment of a Fe-Zn oxide with KOH activation provided excellent adsorption properties with adsorption capacity of 458.90 mg/g due to well-developed microporous structure and rich-in O-containing functional groups as well as exposed oxidizing functional groups (Fe2O3 and FeOOH). Langmuir-Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models accurately fit phenol adsorption. Neutral conditions (pH = 6) and lower ionic strengths were beneficial to phenol removal. Additionally, the predominant adsorption processes were physisorption and chemisorption. Correlation analyses and characterization data confirmed that pore filling, π-π interactions and surface complexation were the dominant driving forces for phenol adsorption. This research provides an environmentally friendly method for utilizing agricultural wastes for the removal of a variety of pollutions from aquatic environment.
