Donor-acceptor engineered g-C3N4 enabling peroxymonosulfate photocatalytic conversion to 1O2 with nearly 100% selectivity

Insights into copper(I) phenylacetylide with in-situ transformation of oxygen and enhanced visible-light response for water decontamination: Cu-O bond promotes exciton dissociation and charge transfer

The widespread contamination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and dyes is a growing concern. necessitating the development of convenient and effective technologies for their removal. Copper(I) phenylacetylide (PhC2Cu) has emerged as a promising photocatalyst for environmental remediation. In this study, we introduced a functional Cu-O bond into PhC2Cu (referred to as OrPhC2Cu) by creatively converting the adsorbed oxygen on the surface of PhC2Cu into a Cu-O bond to enhance the efficiency of Cr(VI) photoreduction, PPCPs photodegradation, and dyes photodegradation through a facile vacuum activating method. The incorporation of the Cu-O bond optimized the electron structure of OrPhC2Cu, facilitating exciton dissociation and charge transfer. The exciton dissociation behavior and charge transfer mechanism were systematically investigated for the first time in the OrPhC2Cu system by photoelectrochemical tests, fluorescence and phosphorescence (PH) techniques, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Remarkably, the enhanced visible-light response of OrPhC2Cu improved photon utilization and significantly promoted the generation of reactive species (RSs), leading to the highly efficient Cr(VI) photoreduction (98.52% within 25 min) and sulfamethazine photodegradation (94.65% within 60 min), with 3.91 and 5.23 times higher activity compared to PhC2Cu. Additionally, the photocatalytic efficiency of OrPhC2Cu in degrading anionic dyes surpassed that of cationic dyes. The performance of the OrPhC2Cu system in treating electroplating effluent or natural water bodies suggests its potential for practical applications.

Pyridine-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks with Pyridyl-Imine Structures for Boosting Photocatalytic H2O2 Production via One-Step 2e- Oxygen Reduction

Bipyridine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising contenders for the photocatalytic generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, the presence of imine nitrogen alters the mode of H2O2 generation from an efficient one-step two-electron (2e-) route to a two-step 2e- oxygen reduction pathway. In this work, we introduce 3,3'-bipyridine units into imine-based COF skeletons, creating a pyridyl-imine structure with two adjacent nitrogen atoms between the pyridine ring and imine linkage. This unique bipyridine-like architecture can effectively suppress the two-step 2e- ORR process at the single imine-nitrogen site, facilitating a more efficient one-step 2e- pathway. Consequently, the optimized pyridyl-imine COF (PyIm-COF) exhibits a remarkable H2O2 production rate of up to 5850 μmol h-1 g-1, nearly double that of pristine bipyridine COFs. This work provides valuable insight into the rational design of functionalized COFs for enhanced H2O2 production in photocatalysis.

Cyanide-based Covalent Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Overall Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Photocatalytic oxygen reduction to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a promising route to providing oxidants for various industrial applications. However, the lack of well-designed photocatalysts for efficient overall H2O2 production in pure water has impeded ongoing research and practical thrusts. Here we present a cyanide-based covalent organic framework (TBTN-COFs) combining 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-tricarbonitrile (TBTN) and benzotrithiophene-2,5,8-tricarbaldehyde (BTT) building blocks with water-affinity and charge-separation. The ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer (<500 fs) and prolonged excited state lifetime (748 ps) can be realized by TBTN-COF, resulting in a hole accumulated BTT and electron-rich TBTN building block. Under one sun, the 11013 μmol h-1 g-1 yield rate of H2O2 can be achieved without any sacrificial agent, outperforming most previous reports. Furthermore, the DFT calculation and in situ DRIFTS spectrums suggesting a Yeager-type absorption of *O2⋅- intermediate in the cyanide active site, which prohibits the formation of superoxide radical and revealing a favored H2O2 production pathway.

Effective degradation of phenol by activating PMS with bimetallic Mo and Ni Co-doped g C3N4 composite catalyst: A Fenton-like degradation process promoted by non-free radical 1O2

The application of bimetal supported graphite phase carbon nitride in activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process has become a research hotspot in recent years. In this study, 8-g C3N4/Mo/Ni composite catalyst material was successfully prepared by doping Mo and Ni in graphite phase carbon nitride. The bimetallic active sites were formed in the catalyst, and PMS was activated by the metal valence Mo6+/Mo4+ and Ni2+/Ni(0) through redox double cycle to effectively degrade phenol. When pH was neutral, the degradation rate of 20 mg/L phenol solution with 8-g C3N4/Mo/Ni (0.35 g/L) and PMS (0.6 mM) could reach 95% within 20 min. The degradation rate of 8-g C3N4/Mo/Ni/PMS catalytic system could reach more than 90% within 20min under the condition of pH range of 3-11 and different anions. Meanwhile, the degradation effects of RhB, MB and OFX on different pollutants within 30min were 99%, 100% and 82%, respectively. Electron spin resonance and quenching experiments showed that in 8-g C3N4/Mo/Ni/PMS system, the degradation mechanism was mainly non-free radicals, and the main active species in the degradation process was 1O2. This study provides a new idea for the study of bimetal supported graphite phase carbon nitride activation of PMS and the theoretical study of degradation mechanism.

Site Engineering of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Regulating Peroxymonosulfate Activation to Generate Singlet Oxygen with 100 % Selectivity

Singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) is an excellent reactive oxygen species (ROSs) for the selective conversion of organic matter, especially in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, due to the huge dilemma in synthesizing single-site type catalysts, the control and regulation of 1 O2 generation in AOPs is still challenging and the underlying mechanism remains largely obscure. Here, taking advantage of the well-defined and flexibly tunable sites of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), we report the first achievement in precisely regulating ROSs generation in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based AOPs by site engineering of COFs. Remarkably, COFs with bipyridine units (BPY-COFs) facilitate PMS activation via a nonradical pathway with 100 % 1 O2 , whereas biphenyl-based COFs (BPD-COFs) with almost identical structures activate PMS to produce radicals (⋅OH and SO4 .- ). The BPY-COFs/PMS system delivers boosted performance for selective degradation of target pollutants from water, which is ca. 9.4 times that of its BPD-COFs counterpart, surpassing most reported PMS-based AOPs systems. Mechanism analysis indicated that highly electronegative pyridine-N atoms on BPY-COFs provide extra sites to adsorb the terminal H atoms of PMS, resulting in simultaneous adsorption of O and H atoms of PMS on one pyridine ring, which facilitates the cleavage of its S-O bond to generate 1 O2 .

Sulfone-Modified Covalent Organic Frameworks Enabling Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Generation via One-Step Two-Electron O2 Reduction

Photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) offers a promising hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) synthetic strategy, especially the one-step two-electron (2e- ) ORR route holds great potential in achieving highly efficient and selectivity. However, efficient one-step 2e- ORR is rarely harvested and the underlying mechanism for regulating the ORR pathways remains greatly obscure. Here, by loading sulfone units into covalent organic frameworks (FS-COFs), we present an efficient photocatalyst for H2 O2 generation via one-step 2e- ORR from pure water and air. Under visible light irradiation, FS-COFs exert a superb H2 O2 yield of 3904.2 μmol h-1  g-1 , outperforming most reported metal-free catalysts under similar conditions. Experimental and theoretical investigation reveals that the sulfone units accelerate the separation of photoinduced electron-hole (e- -h+ ) pairs, enhance the protonation of COFs, and promote O2 adsorption in the Yeager-type, which jointly alters the reaction process from two-step 2e- ORR to the one-step one, thereby achieving efficient H2 O2 generation with high selectivity.
