Facile fabrication of solar-heating and Joule-heating hyperelastic MXene-modified sponge for fast all-weather clean-up of viscous crude oil spill

Recent advances in functional micro/nanomaterials for removal of crude oil via thermal effects

Crude oil is one of the most widely used energy and industrial raw materials that is crucial to the world economy, and is used to produce various petroleum products. However, crude oil often spills during extraction, transportation and use, causing negative impacts on the environment. Thus, there is a high demand for products to remediate leaked crude oil. Among them, oleophilic and hydrophobic adsorbents can absorb crude oil through thermal effects and are research hotspots. In this review, we first present an overview of wettability theory, the heating principles of various thermal effects, and the theory of reducing crude oil viscosity by heating. Then we discuss adsorbents based on different heating methods including the photothermal effect, Joule heating effect, alternating magnetic field heating effect, and composite heating effect. Preparation methods and oil adsorption performance of adsorbents are summarized. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of various heating methods are briefly summarized, as well as the prospects for future research.

Silver nanoparticles coated cellulose-based flexible membrane with excellent UV resistance, high infrared reflection and water resistance for personal thermal management

Designing of a green and multifunctionally integrated cellulose-based flexible wearable material with personal thermoregulation, water and ultraviolet (UV) resistance is essential for the development of personal thermal management and smart textiles. Herein, a hydrophobic silver nanoparticles cellulose-based membrane (H-AgNPs/CEPCM) was prepared through simple solution blending, spin-coating process and chemical vapor modification. The prepared membrane exhibited excellent UV resistance due to the synergistic effect of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as well as UV-absorbing functional groups. The spin-coated AgNPs layer with high infrared reflectivity has great radiant insulation, and temperature was reduced by 3.4 °C compared with H-CEPCM in indoor environment. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of H-AgNPs/CEPCM were significantly improved by the introduction of amide and ether bonds, as well as a large number of hydrogen bonds. This led to a tensile strength of 23.21 MPa and an elongation at break of 16.57 %, while also providing water resistance. Additionally, the H-AgNPs/CEPCM exhibited outstanding thermal stability and hydrophobicity. This work may provide a feasible and promising strategy for the construction of multifunctional integrated cellulose membrane materials for radiant insulation, outdoor textiles and novel UV protection applications.

Facile Preparation of Photothermal Superhydrophobic Melamine Sponge Decorated with MXene and Lignin Particles for Efficient Oil/Water Separation, Fast Crude Oil Recovery, and Active Deicing

Frequent oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewaters have caused a serious threat to the environment, ecosystems, and human beings. Herein, a photothermal and superhydrophobic melamine sponge (MS) decorated with MXene and lignin particles has been prepared for the separation of oil/water mixtures, the recovery of crude oils, and active deicing. The obtained superhydrophobic melamine sponge shows a water contact angle (WCA) of 152.3° and an oil contact angle of ∼0° and possesses good chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in various liquids (i.e., corrosive solutions, organic solvents, and boiling water) and being abrased by sandpapers. This superhydrophobic MS displays a high oil adsorption capacity of CCl4, up to 91.6 times its own weight and a high separation efficiency of 99.4%. Furthermore, the maximum surface temperature of the superhydrophobic MS reaches 57.5 °C under sunlight irradiation (1.0 kW/m2) due to the excellent photothermal heating conversion performance of MXene and lignin particles. When exposed to sunlight, the superhydrophobic MS can quickly absorb viscous crude oils up to 72 times its own weight. Also, the WCA of the superhydrophobic MS remains above 146° after 50 icing/deicing cycles, showing excellent photothermal anti-icing properties. Thus, this study presents an easy and low-cost method for designing photothermal superhydrophobic melamine sponges and opens a new avenue to the applications of efficient oil/water separation, fast crude oil recovery, and active deicing.

Joule Heating-Assisted Crude Oil Purification by a Poly(pyrrole)-Modified Microfibril Cellulose Membrane

Using membrane materials to purify viscous watery oil from industrial production processes and accidental oil spills is of great importance but still challenging. Based on the excellent electrical conductivity and electric-thermal conversion of poly(pyrrole) (PPy), a hydrophobic PPy-modified micro-fibrillated cellulose membrane (P-CP) was successfully prepared. The size of the P-CP membrane can be customized to meet specific requirements. In this research, the membrane diameter is capable of reaching 24 cm. By applying a voltage ranging from 0 to 12 V, the surface temperature of the P-CP membrane can be elevated to roughly 120 °C. After 10 cycles of heating and cooling under 12 V voltage, the electric-thermal curves, surface hydrophobicity, and pore structure of P-CP membrane can remain stable, which suggests remarkable electric-thermal stability and reliability despite prolonged operation. The P-CP membrane shows good linearity between voltage and current (R2 = 0.997) and easy temperature control from room temperature to ∼120 °C at low supply voltage (0-12 V). Under the condition of 12 V power supply and self-gravity, the separation flux of the P-CP membrane for water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions (kerosene, diesel) is 2-3 times higher than that at room temperature, and the separation efficiency is also improved. Importantly, the P-CP membrane shows excellent separation performance for high viscosity water-in-crude oil emulsions, with a separation flux of 40 L m-2 h-1 by gravity. Compared to the situation without electricity, the separation flux of water-in-crude oil emulsion has increased four-fold. The joule heating of the P-CP membrane expands its service time and application scenarios, demonstrating its great application prospects in actual viscous oil-water emulsion separation.

Photothermal, Magnetic, and Superhydrophobic PU Sponge Decorated with a Fe3O4/MXene/Lignin Composite for Efficient Oil/Water Separation

Frequent oil spills and the discharge of industrial oily wastewaters have become a serious threat to the environment, ecosystem, and human beings. Herein, a photothermal, magnetic, and superhydrophobic PU sponge decorated with a Fe3O4/MXene/lignin composite (labeled as S-Fe3O4/MXene/lignin@PU sponge) has been designed and prepared. The obtained superhydrophobic/superoleophilic PU sponge possesses excellent chemical stability, thermal stability, and mechanical durability in terms of being immersed in corrosive solutions and organic solvents and boiling water and being abrased by sandpapers, respectively. The oil adsorption capacities of the S-Fe3O4/MXene/lignin@PU sponge for various organic liquids range from 29.1 to 70.3 g/g, and the oil adsorption capacity for CCl4 can remain 69.6 g/g even after 15 cyclic adsorption tests. The separation efficiencies of the S-Fe3O4/MXene/lignin@PU sponge for n-hexane and CCl4 are higher than 98% in different environments (i.e., water, hot water, 1 mol/L NaOH, 1 mol/L NaCl, and 1 mol/L HCl). More importantly, the introduction of three light absorbers (i.e., Fe3O4, MXene, and lignin) into the S-Fe3O4/MXene/lignin@PU sponge shows a synergistic effect in the photothermal heat conversion performance, and the maximum surface temperature reaches 64.4 °C under sunlight irradiation (1.0 kW/m2). The separation flux of the S-Fe3O4/MXene/lignin@PU sponge for viscous LT147 vacuum pump oil reaches 35,469 L m-2 h-1 under sunlight irradiation, showing an increase of 27.3% compared to that of oil adsorption processes without the photothermal effect. Thus, the rational design of superhydrophobic sponges by introducing proper photothermal heat absorbers provides new insights into facile and cost-effective preparation of sponges for efficient oil/water separation.

Melt-blown fiber felt for efficient all-weather recovery of viscous oil spills by Joule heating and photothermal effect

Adsorbents play a vital role in responding to marine oil spills, yet effectively cleaning up viscous oil spills remains a technical challenge. Herein, we present a superhydrophobic oil-adsorbing felt prepared using melt-blown technology and functionally enhanced with a photoelectric composite CNT/PANI coating for effectively cleaning up high-viscosity oil spills. By virtue of its superior solar/Joule heating ability and thermally conductive fiber network, p-CNT/PANI@PP notably reduced crude oil viscosity and enhanced the oil diffusion coefficient within pores. Leveraging primarily solar heating and supplemented by Joule heating, p-CNT/PANI@PP demonstrates an impressive in-situ adsorption rate of up to 560 g/h for ultra-high-viscosity crude oil (c.a. 138000 mPa·s), alongside an adsorption capacity of 15.57 g/g. This measure enables efficient viscosity reduction and continuous day-and-night recovery of viscous crude oil, addressing the challenges posed by seasonal fluctuations in seawater temperature and adverse weather conditions. Moreover, a conveyorized collector integrated with an oil-adsorbing felt realizes continuous recovery of viscous oil spills with speed control to tackle varying thicknesses of oil film. Given the top-down material design, superior functionality, and applicability to applications, this work provides a comprehensive and feasible solution to catastrophic large-area viscous oil spills.
